The five of us ordered five different appetizers including calamara,, Italian sausage and peppers, Italian meatballs, eggplant. The servings were large enough for each of us to sample each appetizer. We discovered this restaurant earlier in the week and loved it. I called today to make a reservation for either Friday (inside) or Saturday (outside).....whatever was available. The guy was such a jerk who answered the phone that I said "forget it". You'd never know they've been closed for 2 months and now operate at 50% capacity. "Il cibo era molto buono ma costoso." Quiet, quaint place to dine, a hidden gem of a place. Standard Italian fare. Portions are enough for 2. Wife and I dined with a well trained staff. JR was on the job about 3 weeks and knew his stuff. Opted for 2 appetizers and salads and we had a wonderful sorbet... the dessert was #1... a quartered mix of 3 different flavored sorbets within a shell of white chocolate. The salads are skinny for $8. My Cesar was a very small side salad and if you order the Gluten Free bread, be prepared to pay an additional $4. I would opt for the regular bread or no-bread at all... the gluten free was tasteless and doughy although purported to have come right out of the oven. My wife's Sausage and Broccoli Rabe was the top pick of the evening. This small-plate trumped my stuffed eggplant dish. However, her tomato basil soup was a miss. Seating outside was very pleasant and there was enough white noise that drowned out the road noise of the very close Hwy 17. The surrounding garden was so very pleasant, no-see-ums were at a minimum. Excellent food and service! Passed this place while driving into Pawleys and had to look it up on Yelp. I love a good Italian meal, so we couldn't pass it up. Upon entering, the service was spot-on, and it continued for the rest of the night. Our server was extremely pleasant, prompt, and accommodating. When I asked several questions about the menu, she even volunteered that they could make chicken parmesan, which isn't on the menu. Sold. All entrees came with either a house salad or tomato basil soup. For an up charge, you can get a caesar. I had the soup, while my mom and husband had the caesar, and we all loved our choices. The bread that came out was fresh, warm, and served with a deliciously garlicky olive oil for dipping. Mom had the linguine with white clams, which she raved about the entire meal. My husband had the veal francese, and he left nothing on his plate, while I had the chicken parmesan. Everything was delicious, and generously portioned. We also had the limoncello marscapone cake.....delicious! Can't wait to go back. I have been to Caffe Piccolo twice for dinner. Both times were excellent. Their motto is Simple Fresh Italian. Don't let that fool you into thinking that the food is boring. The menu is somewhat traditional but the difference is the quality. You can tell that the ingredients are fresh and high quality. On my last visit I had the Pan Seared Diver scallops over a bed of butternut squash ravioli. It was spectacular. Highly recommended. read more

Our first trip. We are so happy with our choice of restaurants and entrees. My husband ordered the scallop special and I had the chicken scarpariello. The scallops were great and the corn risotto was yum! Well...my meal was incredible!!!! I ordered chicken....however..... My first bite of sausage and I was gone!!! That sausage is amazing! We were a party of 6 and it took 15 minutes to acknowledge us and 30 to receive our first drink. Arriving to the restaurant for my first visit, I was impressed with the layout in its small shopping center; the interior is cozy and clean, and the outside dining area is impressive with an overstory of tree shade and a gorgeous fireplace backdrop to the side. For my meal, bread was a good balance of doughy, chewy, and crunchy, and the oil dip was seasoned well. Meatball appetizer was extremely tasty and moist and is fantastic standalone before dipping in sauce or cheese. I ordered Spicy Penne Alla Vodka as my entree with optional sausage mixed in. Came with tomato soup which was tasty and thick. At his point I was prepared to write a 5 star review; so far everything about my experience was nearly perfect. But the penne arrived and it was a big letdown after so much good food beforehand. My biggest gripes: penne is not fresh and was your typical overcooked boxed noodle - hard and rubbery - bouncing off your fork. After how good everything was beforehand, I expected a freshly cut and rolled, melt-in-your mouth penne. I guess they don't have time for this even though they open at 5:30 PM? The pasta otherwise had good flavor, but the spice was overpowering, hiding other delicious flavors in the meal. When I was finished, I had tingling on my tongue from all the pepper flakes in my food. A bit of a shame because I enjoyed the combination of flavors and I'm a fan of spicy food - just tone down the pepper guys! I would come here again because as always, South Carolina has very few good restaurants. So relatively speaking, this could be 5-star food for a native Carolinian. Because the rest of my meal was delicious, the price is fair, and the location is beautiful, I want to give this 3.5 stars, but my rule is to always round down if I can't decide between 3 or 4. I have been coming to this restaurant for years and it is hands down one of my favorite restaurants of all time. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable.The outdoor patio is beautiful and a great place for dinner in the evening. The food is always delicious. My favorite part is the fresh, warm bread with the garlic olive oil that is just to die for. The pastas are just incredible, especially the homemade fettuccini. The entrees come with a salad or soup, both of which are great. The tomato soup is a favorite! The staff is always very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is family friendly. We ate here last night to celebrate a birthday. We got the mussels in white wine as an appetizer and the portion (as well as the mussels themselves) was huge!!! For dinner I got the scallops served over mushroom risotto with a drizzle of truffle oil and it was absolutely delicious. BEST SCALLOPS I'VE EVER HAD!! And for dessert, the tiramisu was moist and delicious. This was the best meal I've had in a long time with great service. Not to mention the adorable outdoor patio!! First let me start off by saying the staff at Caffe Piccolo are so incredibly nice, our waitress was so sweet and attentive. Now, into why I gave the restaurant 3 stars. We started with bread and oil which was so good. Then we got the mussels in marinara and the crab cake appetizers. The mussels were very good but the crab cake appetizer did not have any sauce and it was quiet dry and bland. Next we got our soup and salad, the Tomato Basil soup tasted quite similar to their tomato sauces used in the mussels so I was not super impressed with its flavor since it may have just been tomato sauce. The Gorgonzola salad was very good though. For Entrees we got the Veal Saltimbocca and Fettuccine Carbonara. The saltimbocca was very good and had an interesting twist of adding mushrooms since that is not typical to the dish, but my issue was with the carbonara. As someone who makes it at home, carbonara is made with eggs and they get tempered and emulsified in the sauce to make it creamy and rich. When I received my pasta dish it had scrambled eggs on it due to how piping hot the mushy pasta was. I do not ever send food back but the dish to me was inedible. The waitress was so kind and understanding and happily had the chef remake the dish for me just to have it come out the exact same way. Thankfully for the 3 courses I had prior to the entrees, not eating my dinner didn't leave me starving. We traveled 30 minutes to try this restaurant based on reviews and unfortunately it didn't meet our expectations. read more
