I've been coming to Caffee Reggio for literally 40 years. It has a classic ambiance that has all but disappeared from the Village. But the service is appallingly awful and the espresso has been undrinkable the last several times I've been there. Over the last few years I've revisited this classic haunt of my college days, and each time the cappuccinos and lattes were undrinkable. Sometimes they were diluted and watery. Sometimes the foam was an undetectable afterthought. And several times the espresso was so disgusting that it left a film in my mouth and I could not even finish the cappuccinos or lattes. To be clear, I can tolerate the lousy coffee at conference hotel buffets or student centers. This isn't misguided elitism. But Reggio's coffee has been so repellant and has left such a disgusting aftertaste on numerous occasions that I literally could not finish half a cup. After coming for decades I thought these were anomalies, but this has become the pattern and there are only so many times I'm willing to have my taste buds assaulted. The last time I visited the latte was so revolting that I needed water and a lozenge to dissolve the repugnant film and painful taste. I'm not exaggerating. As alluded, the service is miserably nonexistent. A few months ago I waited twenty minutes because a server couldn't bother coming over. I had to get up and ask the server if I could order something. Last week I again waited twenty minutes for the initial order, and then no one returned for over an hour. It was NOT because the place was crammed or busy. I tried: - Tuscany tomato soup ($7) - Penne Campagnola ($18) - Penne Genovese ($18) - Ravioli alla vodka ($20) The penne campagnola was my favorite. Very flavorful and I'd get it again The tomato soup was very healthy and good quality, but not exciting. It was thin and had croutons and herbs in it. It's a healthy choice but I wouldn't get it again. The penne genovese was very bland and lukewarm at best. The ravioli alla vodka tasted just a step above chef boyardee. The place is small with metal chairs and tables packed tightly. Old school atmosphere that I really appreciate. They're even open till 3 AM and 4 AM on weekends. I went to Café Reggio tonight for the first time while visiting the city, and what started as a relaxing evening turned into a nightmare. After enjoying my drink, I went to pay and realized my bag -- which had been right next to me -- was gone. I searched everywhere: under the tables, around the floor, and through my shopping bags. Even nearby customers joined in to help. I asked every staff member (two men and one woman) if anyone had seen my bag -- all said no. My daughter then noticed a camera above our table and asked if they could check it. While talking to staff, she happened to spot the gold trim of my bag hidden behind the register. When she pointed it out, a staff member pulled it out -- and it was mine. They asked who had put it there, and it turned out the woman working that night had hidden it, even though we had asked her multiple times about it. The other customers at the table beside us even said it seemed like she was planning to take it after closing and encouraged us to contact management. The entire situation was frightening and ruined what had been a great night. It's deeply unsettling to think an employee might have intended to keep my bag after denying seeing it. Warning to others: If you visit this café, keep your belongings close and stay alert. read more

So my experience with café Reggio was worth five stars, I walked in with my boyfriend on a Thursday afternoon, and we were seated almost immediately. We sat near a bunch of NYU students studying and debating. So that meant hearing their interpretations of literature and film. So if you're not into that ambiance, this isn't the spot for you. There's a lot of college students and young people here. The food was delicious, I loved the strawberry shake and the ravioli was also pretty good. The French fries were mid. The good: Delicious cappuccino, this place is known for being the first place in the USA to sell one and they didn't disappoint. The espresso tonic was bitter and strong, got the job done. The pasta was tasty. Loved the coffee pot in the restaurant and the overall vibe was a good place to catch up that wasn't too loud. Prices were fair. The bad: Service was not so great. It was hard first to get a table. Once we got on the server had our order wrong a number of times. Trying to close our check was just like Italy, a difficult pain with staff no longer checking with us after we received our food. We weren't able to order dessert (even though it looked good) because they never came back to our table to check on us until we were pretty much ready to bounce. The ugly: One staff member rudely addressing us while we were trying to finally pay our tab and leave after waiting over 30 minutes to close our check. I wanted so much for this to be an incredible place. The history of the first espresso cafe in not just NYC but the country had me so excited. Well, I've lived in the city for about 40 years, and honestly... New York aint famous for it's coffee culture... but, I had high hopes. Sadly, this is just a tourist trap as far as I'm concerned. The espresso was about as good as you might expect from Dunkin. I ordered a dry cappuccino... they had no idea how to make it. I couldn't taste the espresso, no head of foam, just warm milk. As the barista was making my double espresso drink, the cup tipped over and half of the coffee poured out, and they just filled the rest of the huge cup up with milk and handed it to me. It was aweful. Here's the good part. The atmosphere in the cafe is fantastic. If you are a tourist from Utah, and don't drink coffee... then you will love coming here and hanging out. The deserts looked good, but I didn't try them. Anyhow, there is nothing I love more than great espresso. I go to Europe all the time to get some. This place doesn't know how to make it, but they were standing room only when I visited, so I guess it doesn't matter. read more

I have been frequenting Reggio's for almost 27 years now. It might have been longer if it wasn't for my foreign born parents who were very strict and literally knew how many minutes it took me to get off that school bus and arrive at our 2-bedroom apartment. I would have to skip school to venture into the outskirts of my hometown in Elizabeth, NJ, but time was limited and so was my piggy-banked lunch money that I saved by starving through many-a-lunches. So, as soon as I could drive in 1997, I commuted through the Holland Tunnel, (then about $4) and into the thousands of black-checkered, yellow Crown Vic's of "the City". I swear I learned how to drive like Mario Andretti there and remained a solid driver since. On that first trip, I ended up at Caffe Reggio and cemented my love and respect for the place ever since. With no Google Reviews, Trip Advisor or Yelp to reference, I trusted my instincts and relied on the dozen or so patrons I watched come in and out of there. Their hot coffee in hand moving quickly to their next location, or the couple taking up a seat at the few tables in the front. It was May and the weather back then was in the high 60's, so the front door was wide open and invited me in. The counter is still in the same place today as it was back then. You can't barely even fit anything on it, but they manage to dish out food from the kitchen onto trays and out to the tables with little to no hiccups. What do I order? A Cappuccino! Again, no idea why, but I have never ordered anything different since. I have 3 wonderful children who admire the city as much as I do and they, along with my wife, know that a pit-stop on MacDougal is part of any trip into NY. They too now have their own "go-to" on MacDougal: the Creperie. So, I grab my coffee to go, and walk them to their "Creperie" and enjoy my cup whilst waiting for their French-inspired, Nutella-drowned, fruit-healthy pancakes....and everybody feels complete. read more

The service was also pretty bad - they did not come to our table to take our order fast nor did they ever come to give us our check! Lovely establishment. A gem, if you will. Listen- if you're coming during at a popular time or on a weekend you're going to wait. You'll be lucky if you get something for a large group of people. Our table of 5 was sat within 20 minutes. The guy who was sitting people was a smooth operator- was nice and considerate, but also made no room for nonsense. I can respect it. Now also listen again- you most likely will be squished. It is a small place with an even smaller bathroom (the bathroom is comical - I'll let you guys discover this for yourself). The food/drinks are a solid 3 stars. My husband said it was the best cappuccino he ever had - he had 2 cups, which is unlike him. My espresso martini tasted a bit weak/"watered down". I was enjoying my tiramisu, until I ran into some garlic that must have accidentally fallen into the mix. I assume it's a small kitchen. But the atmosphere is really the kicker for this place. Open since 1927, this is a quaint little place on a very crowded block that's popular primarily among tourists but some local go here also (I presume a good amount of the NYU crowd as the prices are pretty reasonable.) For dessert, I had an affogato with strawberry ice cream because why not and it was alright. The ice cream was a thick old school variety being on the icy end though I am unsure if it was just the entire batch or because there wasn't much left of it. The ice cream wasn't overly sweet which was a plus and they gave plenty of it which was another plus though I would probably pay a bit more and go to my preferred spot for an affogato. The coffee was probably the best part and I likely would pop in here for a cappuccino or something. I tried the tiramisu from someone else which was probably the best of the three desserts with some good espresso flavor. It wasn't the best I've had but it was decent and the portion size was good for the price also. The last person for some reason or another got a pecan pie. The crust was a lot thinner than other spots and it wasn't as sweet and I wouldn't recommend it much. The flavors here were okay though I was stick with the basics. Go here more for a coffee and for the old school atmosphere and if you really want a snack, get a tiramisu I guess. read more
