Used car sales is not an easy business. I have been in the car business for over 40 years so I know just a little bit. First I will start with Matt. He was a total pro. Reviewed the total price for the sale, the doc and selling fees added to the deal were fair and reasonable. The paper work was a breeze, although I was a cash buyer, so I cannot speak to the finance options. He did make me aware of the warranty options a few times but understood my desire not to purchase. In the end he helped with my two car logistics so I could get my new car were it needed to be. The thing that stood out the most about Cal West was their cars. My car was exceptional, low mileage, one owner, dealer serviced its entire life. As I looked at their inventory I saw the care they took in selecting their inventory. I did not see any cars on the lot that would be an automatic not buy. Quite the opposite everything I saw had strong consumer ratings no matter how old. Your mileage may vary but as someone in the business I would rate this independent used car business as way better than average. I would not recommend this dealership to my worst enemy. Do not do business with these impolite, arrogant, and unethical human beings. They will knowingly waste your time and money AND will have the audacity to blame you for any difficulties you experience with their vehicles. Just take a look at their reviews, do you think the countless 1 star reviews in the last 3 years are simply an accident? There are some positive reviews, I don't doubt they've sold some functioning vehicles, but just take 2 minutes and see how they treat their customers. Here on Yelp you will see they reply to some reviews. In none of these responses will you ever encounter an apology or a single ounce of accountability. At Cal West Motors the customer is always wrong. Good way to do business, right? I purchased a used truck from Cal West Motors in October. We paid for the truck outright in cash. I was told they would handle the title and registration paperwork and we would hear from them in "a couple of weeks." 80 days after purchase, I still hadn't received my title or registration, and the temporary registration was set to expire. I called Cal West Motors again. I told them I had a positive experience with the dealership, was not trying to be difficult, but needed my title and registration by the 90 days so my partner could continue to operate the vehicle legally for her business. I was told, "I didn't know what I was talking about, it was due to the DMV in Sacramento being slow, it was completely out of their control." This was a lie. I eventually called the DMV myself and their records indicated no paperwork had been filed for my truck until mid-December, nearly 75 days since the purchase of the truck. A dealership is required to provide registration to you within 90 days. There was no way this timeline would be met. Also they DMV informed me the dealership hadn't paid the right amount for the registration and title paperwork - so it had been held up. In January the temporary registration had expired and I STILL HAD NOT RECEIVED the truck's paper work. I called Cal West Motors on 1/7/25, 95 days after purchase. I told them that if I didn't have the paperwork by the following Monday I would have to seek legal representation to get the documents. I was told to "never call back," and was then hung up on. I finally received the trucks registration in the mail on 1/12/25, 100 days after I paid nearly $18,000 outright for a vehicle. You'd expect business owners to fulfill their basic organizational tasks in a timely manner. But not Cal West Motors. As of writing this, I STILL DO NOT HAVE MY TRUCK's title - 105 days after the purchase of my vehicle. Every joke that could be made about shady used car dealers stem from places like Cal West Motors. If you've had a bad experience with them know it's very easy to file complaints with the DMV, CA Attorney General, and Better Business Bureau. The dealer I had worked with, Brian Casey assured me that there were no issues with the car and that there mechanics do a thorough check of all vehicles before sales. The car drove smoothly and I trusted his word. A few days prior to going back to get my tags and registration from them, I had discoverd paper work from the previous owners mechanic that showed the car had issues that needed attention. upon receiving my tags from Brian, I had informed him of the preexisting issues, all he did was stare at me like a deer in headlights. Mike Casey, whome I belive is his father, came up and asked if there was a problem, in which I had calmly repeated myself adding that I was taking the car to my mechanic and would like to work out some type of compensation. He flat out refused and it was obvious, did not want to discuss it any further. I told him that tey would be getting bad social media reviews and his reply was "do what you have to do" and walked away. After the fact, I had gotten news from my mechanic that the car needs north of $8,000.00 worth of work. More than half of what I paid for the car. This is an ourageus rip off by Cal West Motors. Long overdue review - bought a used 2007 Acura TSX manual trans car from them 3 years ago. Matt and Brandon were wonderful. Super easy going low pressure and showed me 3 cars in line with what I was looking for. The first visit I didn't buy and continued to shop around, but they said no sweat, come back and see is if you're ready. 2 weeks later I called and they still had the TsX on the lot and it was one of the better prices around. Fast forward to a year ago when I sold the car after driving 2 years- no issue whatsoever with the car the entire time I had it. Of course it's an Acura so it's dependable but they didn't sell me junk either. What's more, during the financing process, my lender was already closed that Sunday evening so the owner got me financing and had me in and out of there in less than an hour. He was super nice as well and gave me a fair rate. So why am I writing this review now? Because I am car shopping for new cars and everyone tries to pull a fast one. A delayed review here for my 2008 Volvo XC90 because I wanted to drive the car for a while and see if it turned out to be a lemon. I'm not gonna lie, I left the lot the day I bought it thinking that I might have gotten screwed. As a single mom who knew nothing about car shopping, I felt like I was the perfect target. Fast forward almost two years and the car still drives wonderfully and I haven't had a single problem. In fact, every time I take it to Volvo for servicing, they remark on what great shape the car's in and how I paid a terrific price. I found their website on line It says no credit needed for approval. I spoke to someone via text message about a Chevy diesel they have for sale. I provided how much I make monthly, what I am able to put on a down payment and how much i am willing to pay a month. Then they asked to go to the website and click get approved where it asks for information similar to a credit check. I responded and said I do not want my credit ran as I am in the process of repairing it. Their response was ,"then we cant help you". If you need a good working car please stay away from this place. I was sold a car, $8000, with no working air conditioning. They knew it I'm sure, since the cars in their lot are their inventory and they should know what is wrong with all their vehicles. They did not share this information with me. It cost me another $1600 to check out the car mechanically & to repair the air conditioning fan, etc. This was back in January 2020. It's September and the now the car needs a new air conditioner hose, sensor and another item, estimated cost of repair $1100. I am now selling this car. Called ahead and still had a 30 min wait. Matt was quite condescending in his tone and how he communicates. Before even allowing me to test drive the vehicle he made me explain exactly how I planned to pay for the vehicle and when I explained he acted as if he didn't believe me. I have excellent credit. Told Matt I had pre approved financing through my bank and that I was prepared to put down a deposit pending a test drive and an agreed price. I noticed a lot of scratches all over the vehicle, exterior pieces falling off and there was oxidation on the hood as well despite his flawless posting online. None of this had even been discussed yet...I figured I'd take it for a spin and talk to him about maybe fixing a thing or two before putting down a deposit BUT... He proceeded to tell me that he had the cleanest RL on the market. He asked if I was looking at other vehicles and I said there was another Acura RL I'd scheduled to see as well that same day. I am highly disappointed how I was treated the other day when I went to Cal West. I have purchased a car from them in the past from I believe the owners son and I was very satisfied. So I recently went back to look into buying a Ram truck from them. I was greeted by a gentleman with glasses. I simply told him I was interested in the Ram truck and I asked if I could test drive it. He asked if I made an appointment. I told him I didn't realize that I need to make an appointment. Then he said if I get to test drive it today would I buy it. This was a red flag to me from the beginning. I didn't know how to respond since I haven't test drive it nor have we discussed the numbers. We went here to check out an SUV. I called about it on a Monday and told them we could be there Saturday morning if it was still available. I asked some questions, guy on the phone answered but was very short. Didn't think anything of it. We made an appt to be there at 9 am. Showed up from 30 minutes away and turns out that the car stunk, previous owners smoked in it. I was bummed because we really liked the car but we have 2 kids and that is a no no. I kept asking questions about the car and he kept answering a little annoyed. Like in your experience does the smell come out? " I mean if that is an issue for you, just leave it at that" I asked if he knew of any mechanical issues with it and he responded " I am not a mechanic but I would think not, since we don't purchase vehicles with issues. He wasn't rude, just answered very arrogantly. Didn't smile once. It made me very weary of him the whole time. He offered to show us a different SUV he had on the lot, 2 years older, but $2,000 less due to it being a certified 1 owner car with a full list of services. We looked at it and liked it so started asking more questions. Then I told him, okay, what price would you give me if I take it right now. He said "the price is on the windshield, these prices are not negotiable" and he walked away. This confused me for a bit, then he walks back out and he is talking to his colleagues about how we are asking for a lower price for a car that is obviously worth buying. He said $9K was the price. I again told him, the tires were extremely worn and needed replacing, as well as a few dings here and then, he stuck to the price and said those were non issues, he left again. I told him that I was interested in the car but that he had to do something for me because they were asking $2,000 more than the highest range suggested for KBB, for that car with all the specs, as a dealer purchase. He said no, that everyone knows KBB can put what ever price they want for cars, that it wasn't even close. We asked to test drive it and he said, we don't take our cars for test drives unless you are definitely buying. I told him I was interested and I can't buy without testing the car, but again had to give me a better deal than $9K on a 2002 Yukon. We went on the test drive after he got a copy of my DL. Car drove smoothly, but drove it out for us for like 5 minutes and parked it in a weird place in a neighborhood. He then got down and said we could switch. My brother gave me his scanner to plug in to check if it had any codes history that popped any red flags for the car and he got all weird about us connecting it. My brother and husband knows cars and he kept making comments on how some things were not big issues. My brother kept nodding his head to me to tell me that was not true. Came back and everything seemed good. We decided to apply for it after he got the owner to agree giving us new tires at least. We then waited in the office for 3-4 trying to close the deal. His creditors kept denying him because the car was too old for what they were asking. He then told me to Put $2,5000 more as a deposit and I told him no. He kept leaving to help other customers and eat, and we were in there for a while at a time. We ended up leaving because had somewhere to be and we kept postponing it to give more time.They did offer us water while we waited. We finally left because we believe in "things always happen for a reason" and if it didn't happen, there was a reason. At this point we had gotten all sort of weird vibes from the guy assisting us. He asked us to wait but said no, because we had our 2 kids, we were hungry and it was hot in that office. I told him to call me if he heard back with a loan under $300/ 3 years. He said I would have to go in because he could not discuss anything over the phone other than "we have an offer." We left, he called us an hour later telling me to go back because finally someone said yes, they just needed to negotiate the price with the owner (when they spoke on the phone we heard how they kept telling him how that vehicle was not worth the loan for what they were asking". I told him we could't go back until the following Saturday. He told me to get off early in San Jose to go on Tuesday to seal the deal. I told him I couldn't because I needed to pick up my girls from daycare and couldn't miss work for something he couldn't assure me over the phone. He suggested a sitter. I was annoyed by the wait and his need to close the deal, on top of everything else. We ended up not going back and feel we dodged a huge bullet. They need to work on their customer service, be more personable. Nothing compared to my DGDG experience in San Jose-CA. I like an honest and humble establishment though. Will not go back! From the start we felt discriminated by the salesman who wanted to check our credit the minute we entered the lot without test driving the vehicle and was super rude about us wanting to test drive the car first. I have had the worst luck from used dealers in the past from lemons to getting sucked into i loan where i ended up paying triple the amount the car was worth! THAT WAS NOT THE CASE HERE!!!!! I could fully understand everything that was being said to me and never once was anything worded just to sound good. I bought a 2006 ford Taurus from here on july 17th 2015 with 97000 miles on it. I got this car for 4995.00 when on kbb it goes for 5200 in the condition it was in. I have never been in a used car that smelled as good as this one did or one that was as clean either. Matt Moran was very respectable and accommodating in working a warrenty in with the car as well within my budget. Long story short 3 days later a AAA tow truck totaled out my back end and as soon as i get my check i will be returning to Cal West to buy another vehicle from Matt Moran. Keep up the good work guys and just know that not everyone using this yelp thing for the right reasons. Dont judge this place from other reviews go down here first. I have purchased 2 vehicles from Cal West and both experiences were excellent! About 6 years ago, my husband bought a used Crown Vic from them. It was a pretty easy-breezy transaction. The car is still going strong! Just yesterday, we made a huge purchase with them and feel great about the deal we got! I had emailed Matt after seeing some vehicles online that looked good to us, and we agreed to meet at 1 pm. When we arrived, the lot was jumping! Waaaay more customers than staff, and you could tell they were trying to get to everyone. Matt let us know he would be with us shortly and we browsed while he finished with his customer. Once we had his attention, we had it fully. We test drove a few trucks and decided on one. We weren't thinking we would find "the one" so soon so we had not done all our research and weren't quite prepared to decide about our trade in, etc. We let Matt know we were interested but needed to go have lunch. I am so grateful for what happened next- Matt simply handed us his card and told us to give him a call if we were coming back so he could be sure to be available. This seem like a normal thing, right? I've had dealers in the past get all weird to keep us on the lot. One went so far as to conjure up a tear in his eyes "But you'll go buy a car from someone else if you leave..." um, yeah, if you can't be a big boy about it, we will!!! We went to lunch to avoid hunger based decisions and also to give ourselves time to do a little research (dontcha love a smartphone?!) What we discovered was the truck we wanted was already at a very good price, and the one we had for trade in was worth half of what we owed on it (insert shaking fist at sky and crying "whyyyy" moment here.) We knew it would be tight with our budget. We almost just went home, but decided that it can't hurt to try to get them to our price, so we went back. Long story short now, Matt worked with us and got us a pretty darn good deal. Not only did they take the trade in for a decent price, we were able to negotiate on the truck as well. It wasn't like the movies where they are asking 18k and we offered 9k and met at 12k, we were going back and forth over a few hundred dollars. A few hundred dollars is precious to us, even when we are spending big bucks on a truck. I never felt rushed or pressured. It was closing time and we were mostly paying cash, and I ended up having to call my bank to get them to up my daily limit, and that took a looong time, but they were patient, let me do my thing while they got the truck ready for us. While we were there, we overheard some angry browsers telling them they needed more staff. I run a business that can be feast or famine, so I get it- you can't staff to be prepared for every rush or you'll be overstaffed most of the time. I'd rather see them running a tight ship and knowing i got the best price than have too many people around and seeing that reflected in the sticker price. It's a no frills place, and you see that on the bottom line. I'd absolutely buy from Matt and Cal-West again, even though I'm moving east. The caustic salt they use in winter in New Endgland on the roads kills cars, and I wouldn't hesitate to have Matt ship me a vehicle, because I trust them. read more
