Not a fan. They have no gf options, the owners seem to have attitudes and the wait can be long at times because the older generation folks pack in there for inexpensive meals. Even when I wasent gf I wasent a huge fan. I once had a good Taylor ham and cheese sandwich here but I mean who can mess that up. Horrible service. Management is bad. Takes way to long to sit down. Backtalks the costumers. All around bad. Food is semi decent but does not make up for the poor treatment of the costumers and the horrible service and food takes an absurd amount of time to come out. This is definitely my new favorite diner. Our breakfast was amazing! We had amazing hash browns (seasoned potatoes) and Taylor egg and cheese on homemade rolls. Why can't we get these in Cali? The French toast special was unique and tasty but a little burnt. read more

Came here for dessert and coffee with a girlfriend of mine and 15 min before closing we were kicked out and rushed to finish our dessert and drink because they're closing while there were still a group of people eating in the back area. While paying, the server practically forced us to give a tip (for a bad service). We came here before and that was a pleasant time but this is just unacceptable. This diner was eh. My family is in Caldwell to visit my grandpa and we stopped to get something to eat. I ordered the Greek salad and it was average at best. The grape leaves tasted kind of old. The dressing was bland. I probably won't be going back but since a lot of people like this place maybe I just got the wrong thing. read more

Caldwell dinner has a great staff and awesome breakfast

We live in Caldwell and this is the best diner! The service is friendly, hostess Penny is welcoming and sweet, and the establishment is very clean. They are one of the most family friendly diners. My daughter is 4 (we have been taking her since she was 2) and she is always wants to switch from the counter to the booth (or vice versa) and everyone is always accommodating & pleasant. We have had a spill (or two) and it is never a problem. When we try to go to another diner (out of the area), my daughter wants to go to "her diner". The paninis, dinner specials, burgers, French toast, and desserts are all fabulous. The wait staff is very attentive and organized. Definitely worth a visit! read more

Caldwell Diner offers great meals at very affordable prices and terrific service! My family and I go frequently and are never disappointed by the wide range of offerings. My favorite is the Athena Rigatoni with Shrimp - even if it's not a special when you go in, just ask and they are happy to prepare it for you. No matter what you get, it's always good. I wish it was possible to leave negative stars, because this place deserves the lowest rating possible. No wonder it's always empty. The waitresses are especially rude and condescending, and the food, while inexpensive, lives up to the old saying "you get what you pay for." The pumpkin ravioli was to die for, literally. If that was my last meal before the electric chair, I'd pull the switch myself. And you could plaster a wall with the goo they serve as sauce. I really used to eat here often. We would either come for a quick breakfast or a good dinner. I believe quality has gone downhill and those who are regulars are there for the convenience of an in town diner! Upon our last visit, our waitress brought me me a wrong meal and by the time my husband ate his, mine then came out. No apologies from owner. The waitress did however but.... Then being the very loud diner it always is, I had turned on my phone to check it for any calls, a video of mine came up with the sound of the ocean. Within 5 seconds before I was able to shut the sound off or down, this RUDE OWNER looked over my shoulder and rudely said to me, 'do you mind shutting that off'? REALLY? There is no way she would have actually heard it unless she was watching and hovering behind me for some strange reason. As I said earlier, this is one of the LOUDEST diners which I am sure everyone would agree. I wanted to go up to pay our bill rather than my husband and when I would have been asked the usual question, 'how was everything' I certainly would have said something not too nice to this most RUDE and IGNORANT WOMAN! Not only about her rudeness but not even coming over about the unfortunate timing of our meals. We went out to have dinner together my husband and I...not seperately. NEVER will I step foot into this convenient diner and the food there is absolutely not worth it either as others have stated. Best thing is their fries also had the apple pie and it was horrible as someone else stated as well. There was a time a few years back when this diner was pretty good. I don't know what happened. New owners? New cooks? I am not sure. I have on more than one occasion ordered here and my pancakes were burned. Not just dark brown but black. Who would serve something like that? One of the items on the menu has a picture of the food burnt so at least they are not lying. One other odd thing is the soda is just not good. We've been going to the Caldwell Diner for more than 15 years. The food is always consistent with good options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We've been there for all three meals. Good specials and they'll substitute if they can. The staff is friendly and efficient. And I noticed that the staff has stayed with this owner forever and some seem to get promoted, which is a nice sign for how the place is run. They had a fire several years ago. They had to close to renovate. They came back nicer than before. Very glad they did. I read through some other reviews and one in particular kinda trashed the owners. This is NOT true. We've known the owners and their family for years. They greet us and our children by name. They're great. If you come when they're busy, well then, they're just busy! That's a good sign. Stop watching TV and come earlier for a good meal! Definitely worth a stop if you're in the Caldwell area. read more

We just had a horrible experience at the Caldwell Diner. The waitress was extremely rude, and when we asked for the manager, she became ruder, and the manager defender her. The seven of us went up the block to Forte, where the service is excellent. We eat out quite often and have not experienced such disrespect to customers. read more

I would leave zero stars but you have to leave one. Came for dessert and tea with a friend and they kicked us out when our dessert wasn't even finished yet and they weren't closing for another 15 minutes. Then they forced us to leave a tip (it was a older woman and middle aged woman). By the way there are still customers sitting in there. NEVER coming again. Wow ... If misery loves company this is the place for you. After just completing a 70 hour work week I decided to stop in for a quick cup of coffee and a slice of pie to burn some time while waiting for my laundry cycle to complete across the street at the local laundry mat. While sitting alone at the counter eating my food the female manager advised me that I could not continue to watch a youtube golf lesson video on my phone in the restaurant because it was disturbing other customers. She went on to say "we dont do that here" . I turned my phone off quietly finished my food and paid for my food. While at the register I asked her why she was not addressing the the group parents and screeching children that were seated in the back of the dinner for disturbing my dinner. I also asked her if it was acceptable that the parents of that large group allowed four kids to spin on the bar stools on each side of me while I ate my food. She had no answer for those questions. Maybe it was my long hair ? Maybe cause I have a full beard and mustache ? Im not sure why she picked me out but I know that was my last time at that dinner. I guess twenty plus year customers are easy to find. The next time I want dinner food I will leave Caldwell where I live and take a short ride to the Verona Dinner,Pilgrim Dinner or Manny's in Montclair where they treat long time customer with respect. I do not know what happened at the Caldwell Diner. They never get my order correct, the food quality has been sub par, and the food does not taste good. The ownership should learn more than 2 vegetables exist (Broccoli and Corn). The servers are very good but the food lacks quality good tasting. read more

Not from the area stopped by for a bite to eat with the wife. We got disco fries which were actually really good. But i got the Classic French Toast which comes with 2 eggs, 2 bacon and a sausage link. The french toast was raw. when you can pull at the french toast and it stretches like it was stuffed with cheese its not cooked. i told the waitress the i ate at a piece of the french toast and i was in disgust and just didnt want anything else cause it killed my appetite. Whem i got the bill she took 2 dollars off a meal thats 11 for the french toast i didnt eat meaning she was charging me 9 bucks for eggs etc. i dont mind paying but damn. i go up to the manager and he goes and tells me im wrong about the french and its just the egg wash on it. Im just like im jewish and i know what challah french toast is. Even the waitress agree with me the french toast was just mushy and raw. Luckily this isnt my local diner i wont be back. read more
