I'm a long time Calexico visitor (greenpoint and UES) and decided a couple of weeks ago to try out the location close to my new apartment. Food is delicious as always but WHERE DID THE JALAPEÑO POPPERS GO? I had them last time I was here, but now they're not on the menu. So I've been to the Greenpoint location before and I love it...but apparently they just opened the park slope location! Yay, first to review it! I was walking down 5th ave with a few friends and saw that it had opened. The hostess, who was super sweet told me they only opened last night. That was hard to believe as the staff was so on point. They don't have booze yet, which is a bummer but whatever cause who really has time for booze when you're shoveling delicious gringo tacos and the most perfect fish tacos into your mouth. They even do a new Baja Tofu Taco which is just like their Baja Fish Taco but sub tofu. I will def be going back and spreading the word! read more

This is definitely Tex-Mex - NOT authentic Mexican food - and definitely tasty. I usually get the Carne Fries or a salad (depends if my virtuous or indulgent side wins out that day). I think there's a little something for everyone here and they are very accommodating if you want to customize an order. I've eaten in a few times since I live nearby and the service is always friendly. I have had a few problems with consistency (sometimes ingredients are missing, the spices aren't on the chipotle fries, or simile). But they are quick to correct any mistakes and offer a solution. This place has a cool vibe and is pretty chill. No liquor license yet which is fine cuz they have a good selection of jarritos and some interesting aqua frescas; when we went there was only one kind. I'de be more inclined to try it if they more authentic flavors like tamarind or even horchatas. The guac and salsa chips were great. Salsa comes with your choice of red or green which is nice but for 4.50, they should just bring out both. Fish taco was super flavorful with a mango salsa, chipotle sauce and crunchy cabbage. The meats were kind of disappointing. The meat in the gringo taco was too salty and had no flavor other than salt. The pulled pork was super tender and you could tell someone put a lot of tlc into that pork but again, little flavor. Carne asada was cold. Sad face. If I go back, I'm only going for the fish tacos. I'll retry this joint a little later, maybe they just need time to work out the kinks. read more

Ok- I should have listened to the reviews. We did not get to try the food because we were pretty much ignored. There were about 3 tables in the place at 4 this afternoon. No greeting from the waitress as she walked by. Ok - we are not high maintenance - we are not looking to be best friends with the staff. So then she decides to go to a guy at the bar who came in after us. No problem. Now we are sitting and it's obvious we are ready to order. She walks right by us again and proceeds to set an empty table! WOW. So here is the deal. I waitressed all through college. Every boss I had told me DO NOT walk by a table without acknowledging the customers. So now it's 3 times she walked by. After she set the table she still did not look at us and walked to the back. That's when we decided to walk out. No one stopped us. No one asked us if there was a problem. David- who labels himself the owner. You have a problem here. People don't want to spend their hard-earned money to be treated like garbage. No matter how good the food is. Not that we will ever know, because if you have staff that already does this- why bother returning? What a shame. read more

Just went here, and if my friend from the neighborhood hadn't informed me that they just opened, and their current lack of a liquor license, you wouldn't know that this place just opened. Usually when places are brand new you can expect a few kinks to still be worked out, but our service was prompt and friendly and the food was sooooooo goooooood. We have the elote, the guacamole, the gringo rolled quesadilla and the hot wings. Everything was quite exceptional and that crack sauce that comes with the quesadillas is something special. Carne fries and mushroom quesadilla are insanely delicious. Seasonal greens are also amazing. First time I tried they were brussel sprouts and second they were beet and kale-- incredibly unique taste to both. The fish and carne asada tacos were both a little dry and not so flavorful-- more meh than bad. Same with chicken burrito. I like Calexico but am going to take a break from going there. The staff at the bar is always super nice. But the food is super inconsistent, you can order the same burrito bowl five times and get five very different dishes. Usually they forget the jalapenos, other ingredients come in wildly different portions. My last pork bowl there was mostly beans and no jalapenos, wings were so dry it was as if theyd been frozen for years, and this is the only place Ive ever gotten nachos that were limp and soggy on arrival. Sorry Calexico, Ive been a very loyal customer, but I cant tolerate the random dishes anymore and the quality has really been let go. read more

The meal here was really delicious, the Baja fish in particular was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. All wonderful. The manager Jasmine is incredibly cordial and handled a payment issue with grace and generosity. I will return to calexico if only to buy Jasmine a drink. This place was by far our favorite out of all the places we went to. The atmosphere, the food, the drinks, and our bartendars.....I've been in the restaurant business in Seattle for 20 years and I can say, this was one of the best eating out experiences I have ever had......We ate here on Saturday night for happy hour and sat at the bar. We had margaritas, shrimp, black bean, and fried chicken tacos. Water glasses were always filled and attention to detail was spot on!!!! My wife & I stopped in here last week for a little anniversary dinner. The place was super hopping with a 30-45 minute estimated wait. We entertained ourselves at another local place with drinks until it was time to eat. The service we had was mediocre. Another waitress kept checking in on us and getting us what we wanted while our was doing busy work in plain view of our table. We ordered guacamole which came cold which leads me to believe it was in the fridge. I'm not a fan of pre-prepared guac in general. Especially when it's cold. It wasn't bad but room temperature is best for guac IMO. Unfortunately the same can't be said for our main courses. Both of our main dishes were luke warm at best. I had to send mine back because room temperature enchiladas are a drag. The second enchilada was hot and I'd say it was average, flavor-wise. My wife had 2 fish tacos and 1 chicken taco. Her chicken taco was really not very hot and she didn't enjoy it. The other 2 she liked. Basically, this place is ok. Nothing great. I've gotten food from their street carts that I enjoyed more than this meal and at a fraction of the cost. I'll stick with the street carts. read more

Recently found out about this spot and I've already visited about 5 times! I've got the pork burrito in a bowl every time I've been. The rice is so flavorful and I love the amount of hot sauce options they have at the table. I've been with friends who have gotten other burritos and also guac and everyone had good reviews about the food. The prices are very reasonable. The only negative is they don't take reservations and so far I had to wait about 20-30 minutes to be seated. I haven't tried the drinks yet but the bar is always busy!!!! read more

I happen to love Mexican food so have tried quite a few Mexican restaurants. I admit that I tend to be a repeat customer because when I like something I stick with it. Today my daughter and I went to Calexico in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Very unassuming from the outside. Simple and nice atmosphere on the inside. Very friendly staff. I had a steak fajita, my daughter ordered the grilled shrimp bowl. We shared guacamole as a starter. Omg!! This restaurant has taken 1st place in my book of Mexican restaurants! The guacamole was the best I ever had. The steak had so much flavor and was cooked perfectly! The black beans tasted better than any black beans I've had. My daughters entree, was at least as tasty and I wished I could eat both of our meals without exploding! The shrimp was so flavorful, basically everything in her bowl was filled with deliciousness. If you like Mexican, you HAVE to stop here. You will not be disappointed. read more

Very very very solid Mexican food. Not as gritty/authentic as the stuff in LA and as some other hole-in the wall joints, but as far as NYC Mexican food goes this is pretty solid. Crispy, non-greasy chips, great sauces, well-simmered and sauced meats, and fantastic cocktails. read more

I'd always been scared away by the crowds and wait time estimates but decided to stick it out. We were told it would be 40 minutes but that they'd text us when the table was ready. Just 10 minutes later we were drinking margaritas at the bar and got the text. The veggie tacos are great - tofu is lightly fried and the black beans and cheese have good flavor. Went looking for decent Mexican food with a friend. Stopped here and ordered nachos, chips and salsa and nachos. They charged 5 dollars for chips and salsa. The nachos were covered in crap cheese that wasn't even melted. The quesadilla was luke warm. The only decent part of the meal were the chips and salsa. Simply not good food. read more

I really like the food here. I don't eat meat, so my review is based on the yummy veg options, of which there are a satisfying number. Tofu taco is my fave, but black bean also yummy. Love the veg enchilada and tostada salad, too. But dear lord, this place is slow. I'm here for lunch and have been seated for 30 min, no food. In my three visits, I've never been offered a refill, and it has at times been frigid inside. So though I want to come a lot, I only come when desperate. The atmosphere is really chill, pretty good music and the staff is very friendly. The food was pretty good as well, however, the portions were very small. For a Mexican restaurant, the amount you pay compared to the amount of food you are served does not add up. I ordered a Chipotle Pork burrito bowl with brown rice. The food was good but the bowl was filled up not even half way. After eating a burrito bowl, fries, and a drink I was still very hungry with lots of room in my stomach to spare.
