We've only ordered delivery from here (through their website since they're not on seamless) and so far, it's always been spot on. DH is generally not a fan of Mexican/tex-mex, but he raves about the rolled quesadillas with crack sauce and I switch it up between the burritos and bowls normally. The fries with all the fixings are fantastic, but be prepared to share as it's a huge, messy, delicious portion! Large portions, reasonably priced and the delivery people are always really nice. read more

I was excited to see one of my favorite food charts get a restaurant. The tacos are as good as always, and they are accommodating to larger parties and kids. They got their liquor license a while back, so it takes this place up a star. read more

This place has good food BUT they always mess up the delivery order. Very unreliable. Portions on salads vary wildly from day to day. Don't bother with delivery unless you like to play Russian roulette. read more

My wife and I have ordered food from here on a pretty regular basis. We like the food. The problem we have is how different the portions can be. I would say if you were to order on a weekday the portions should be fine. On a Friday or Saturday night, however, it is blatantly obvious they are scaling back the amount of food they portion out. At the prices they charge, it can be quite bothersome to see something you usually order at half the size. read more

Went here with a some high expectations. Unfortunately, this place didn't reach them. I have to give them this from first impression, walking in there seemed like a good choice. Nice looking place/environment, music, and constant people walking in. I was excited to eat as I sipped on my beer enjoying time with family. However, when the food reached our table i was the least bit thrilled with what i saw on my plate. It was fake Mexican type of food, it was not real authentic mexican food. Sad to say it didn't end here. As i walked out of the place the sickness began. I felt sick to my stomach for the rest of the day and got some awful food poisoning. Me or my family will not be returning to Calexico for our own safety. read more

Ordered delivery from Calexico and food was delicious, as always. But this time, they forgot to include our order of guacamole and chips - first time they have ever messed up a delivery order for us. So we called the restaurant and the manager ensured we had our guacamole within 15 minutes, and took the charge off our bill. 5 stars for food, 10 stars for customer service. The nachos here are much better than at Pork Slope. I was a bit annoyed that I could not be seated without my dining partner despite wanting to order drinks and dinner for myself. Despite the initial seating frustration, I found a seat at the bar and enjoyed a happy hour margarita with my nachos. The margs are very fresh and tasty. Maybe a bit more agave/citrus could balance it out more, but overall this is one of the best quality margs you will find in NYC. I really appreciated the following interaction - when I received my bill, there was a token for a free drink on Calexico. I had only ordered one marg during happy hour when the special is bogo. Instead of just letting the "free" marg not happen, the bartender made sure I have a reason to return AND to indulge in the second half of my happy hour deal. This kind of customer attention is the ultimate to me - I will definitely be back at Calexico soon and look forward to many more marg/nacho feasts! read more

Wow! What a difference a few days make. I decided to stop in at Calexico on Wednesday evening for a Rolled Chicken Quesadilla and a side of the black beans for take out. I must say I quite enjoyed it so with my excitement for a new spot in the hood (I've been here over 15 years and have seen the space transform from Vaux to Blue Ribbon Sushi to Calexico) I decided to take the wife last night. My wife is a pescetarian who has also recently cut gluten out of her diet (which it seems at least 50% of my friends residing in Park Slope have done) so her options are very limited. We explained this to the nice hostess and she told us they could grill the fish so that it wasn't beer battered and fried (beer contains gluten as does the flour they dip the fish in prior to frying) and the hostess happily explained that they offered a grilled fish option which excited my wife immensely. We took our seat, glanced over the menus and then were ready to order. This is when things took a turn for the worse and earned the restaurant my 1 star. The waitress told my wife that grilling the fish was at the chef's discretion and they usually wouldn't do it when the kitchen was busy. We told the waitress that the hostess explained they could grill the fish and didn't attach any conditions to her statement. (I for one don't see how it's any more labor or time intensive to grill a fish over beer battering and frying but I'm not a chef) I should also note that this was Saturday, July 5th one of the quietest days in the Slope of the year and there were numerous empty tables and many of the other diners seemed well into their meals. Needless to say the waitress returned and told us that unfortunately the kitchen was too busy to meet my wife's needs and they wouldn't be able to accommodate her request (even though just 10 minutes prior we were told this was a "no problem option" by the hostess. Well, very disappointedly we left and went to an old favorite stand by Al Di La where we had another amazing 5 star meal with 5 star service...oh, and the chef had NO PROBLEM NOT using the breadcrumbs on the Hake my wife ordered. Not to mention that the restaurant was packed with a few people waiting for a table. It's such a shame as the Calexico folks have a usually good reputation, obviously spent a lot of time and money renovating the space into a very attractive restaurant but this was an uncomfortable and embarrassing experience and they have really hurt my chances of ever going back. What ever happened to the good old days when the customer came 1st and a nice neighborhood establishment would go out of their way (within limits of course) to accommodate a simple request of a neighborhood resident who could potentially become a weekly or even more frequent visitor/customer??? Good luck Calexico I'm sure you will do well but by exhibiting this behavior I imagine you will alienate a large percentage of your potential local customer base. read more

SO I've been to the truck and its good Mexican food! However, I am sitting at Rachel's (a Mexican joint down the street) tonight, as I attempted to the go to Calexico tonight and my party of 3 was told that all the EMPTY tables were spoken for (and there were plenty available). The not-so-good looking hostess told me it would be a 30 minute wait...ummm ok?!?!? (I guess I thought to myself). Me and my very patient friends sat at the bar and waited for drinks that never came. After 20 minutes of dry bar service we asked the hostess to seat us again, she then lurched and yelled at us at the same time and started back pedaling that tables weren't spoken for and they had an "emergency party" they had to handle immediately. LIE!!! They then proceeded to sit a party of 3!!! At that point we stood up and took our business to Rachel's!! Conveniently located on 5th ave between 7th and 8th streets with delicious food and a fun, welcoming staff!!! Happy summer slopers!! read more
