I like the story behind this place - it's not a chain. I'm not a fan of burritos that are full of rice and beans, but the tacos looked good. Very California-ey, and I was reminded of time in San Diego when I saw the fish taco on the menu. I was a little thrown by the corn taco shell within a flour tortilla but it totally worked and was tasty!! Also deliciously perfect green salsa, my fave. I'll go back. read more

Took my daughter here for lunch the other day to try for the first time. The place was packed for a Friday afternoon right after Christmas. So packed that we actually had to stand and wait for a table for a few minutes. I tried the San Diego (fish tacos) while she had the Old Monterey burrito. Both we good. I liked how the fish, cabbage and sauce were stuffed into a hard taco shell which was wrapped with a soft taco shell. That was different. Both of our meals came with a hearty serving of homemade tortilla chips which were meant to be dipped in any of the several salsas available in the salsa bar. Also very tasty. If you do not want to read the whole thing......good pricing, good food and awesome homemade salsas. Just not the best i have ever had, that is why no 5 stars. Side note...the girl who works the front is smoking hot, I have been to Cali about ten times (work down the street). I have had the fish taco's (top 5 i have ever had), smoked tofu burrito (awesome,; who knew tofu was good!), and various build your own burritos They make their own chips and produce their own salsa. Last time i was there it was blueberry, ginger, melon salsa. It was awesome! I have never had a bad burrito here, but i will agree with previous posts that something their flavor is not super robust. On a side note, the girl that usually works the front is super hot. And has great eyes. I think they gain a star just because she works there. They have really whole tasting foods, which means nothing tasted cheap or half assed. I loved the endless salsas available, buffet style. I got a big sur burrito. It's a lot of food, because it brings tortilla chips on the side. I could've saved some and took it home but it was too good to leave for later, who would do such blasphemy, cmooon! I tore it up! Best burritos and tacos around... tons of great vegetarian options. The Santa Cruz is amazing. I've also had the Cambria, which was much better than the simple ingredients would lead you to believe. The chips seem fresh made (no word on whether they are or not) and they are delicious. How I didn't know this placed existed is beyond me. There's a lot of chain and local texmex restaurants in the Lehigh valley but this takes the cake. Great selection of burritos, tacos, and quesadillas. Everything is solid and tastes like fresh ingredients were used. I highly recommend the Santa Barbara tacos because they come with guac and ofcourse they charge a ton extra if you want to add. Maybe the best part of this place is their in-house made salsa bar. It's cafe style makes it a nice place to go grab lunch. read more

I was meeting someone here for dinner at 8, but realized on my way there that they closed at 8. I got there around 7:55 and most of the tables still had guests, so I walked up to the door and peered through the window to see if my friend was there already. The girl comes up to the door that I'm standing right in front of, and turns the sign from open to closed without acknowledging me at all. How much ruder can you get? Nonetheless, she doesn't lock the door. I wait outside to run into my friend, and she ends up parking and going into the restaurant anyway. So I follow her in, and we go up to the counter to see if we can still order. The guy at the register seems apologetic, but the same girl still has her attitude when she tells us that they close at 8. Then, another couple walks in behind us and she yells to them that they're closed. I've eaten here once before, and it was good, but that doesn't excuse the horrible service I got. I love to support local businesses, especially those that cater to my vegan lifestyle, but even if I would have been able to place an order, I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I would have liked because of the terrible service. read more

Had the most horrible family dining experience ever at Cali Burrito in Allentown last night...the "manager" would not accommodate our friends, who were visiting from Southern California and whose daughter has a dairy allergy. He was a complete jackass about making a quesadilla that was not heated (just a tortilla and shredded cheese) for our 4 year old even though we paid for an adult quesadilla. He made it a point to come out and tell us that it was not on the menu and made our 4 year old feel horrible for even making the request. Beyond the painfully poor customer service, the fact that you can see employees smoking while standing in the open kitchen backdoor seems like a borderline health code violation. read more

Cheap, a variety of options not typically on your 'Mexican' menu (i.e. felafel burrito? I'm intrigued, but I wasn't in the mood that day for Mediterranean.) I got tacos. My only gripe (which is a personal thing, and more of a warning in case anyone is as weird as I am) is that the tacos were hard covered by soft shells. But the cheese was between the two shells...so when I peeled off the soft shell because I don't like soft shells, I lost the cheese. Sadface. (seriously...who doesn't like soft shells? that's why I'm weird...) Other than that, they had mango blueberry salsa, which was awesome! Guacamole was also quite tasty, and any place that has fountain orange soda gets another half a star. I'd go again fo 'sho. read more

I absolutely LOVE Cali burrito! I wish there were more Cali burritos so that it wasn't always so busy! The smoked tofu taco is a vegetarians delight! I was a tad weary but oh. My. Yum. A dispute with the owner that could have been taken care of with a free taco on his part was instead dealt out with a free "UP YOURS" to his paying customer. I cash paid for a meal and there was a disagreement with the prices charges. He told me I could stick it where the sun doesn't shine. Swung by here after spending two days at Lehigh Hospital in the trauma unit. It was a terrific meal to end my healing in Allentown. The tacos were tasty, I had the pork and the fish tacos. The meat was slow cooked (flavorful) and the fish was pretty good, though hidden under cabbage and other veggies. They wrap a soft shell taco with some cheese around a hard shell taco and I have to say it works. The salsas are solid, with a fruit salsa with cinnamon being the winner. My friend told me about this place a while back and we finally got around to going together! The menu looks interesting, with many vegetarian options. The first thing I noticed was the amount of people eating in/coming through-- it was a good amount. I told the cashier that it was my first time here, and asked her what the best seller is. Without skipping a beat she said the Old Monterey, so I got that with all the free fixings except the spicy/hot toppings (I'm not a fan). It was put together exceptionally fast--like 2-3 minutes fast. There wasn't a line but I was still impressed/suspicious. The burrito came out in a basket lined with chips. My first impression was when she handed it to me was that the burrito was heavy, so that was a good sign. I would have to agree with the other reviewers that the chicken is nothing special. Overall the burrito itself is nothing special--they just happened to combine a bunch I things I like. The chips were ok. I'm probably too used to the super greasy type of chips. Also, The salsa bar was great; I really liked the mild salsa. Next time for my burrito though, I should skip the pickles and get sour cream. So because I didn't order anything special, I do think that I need to try the other vegetarian options before solidifying my opinion of this place. I shall return! read more

Drove to Cali Burrito from St Luke's. Hospital food is grosser than gross, so I went on a food run for my wife and newborn (technically the kid is going to also eat this stuff in couple of hours). Lots of vegetarian options, I had the Nepenthe and it was very good. The falafel/pickle favors worked well in a bean, rice, and tortilla format. If I have a second kid, I'm going back to Cali Buritto! Update: had a second. They were closed due to fire. Update 2: had a third. They're open again and even CLOSER to the hospital! read more

I would normally say, "This isn't my kind of place." And I'd be dead wrong. Freshest ingredients are used and portions are large enough for fat guys like me. The people there love food and it shows in what they serve. They have fresh salsa from mild to xtra hot and it is all awesome. If I can find one negative, it's the chairs, they're a bit uncomfortable. I guess that's to get turnover. My family ate here tonight and I was not sure what to expect, but we have been told the food is great. We all got El dorados but I was the only one with a wrap everyone else got the bowls. Everyone enjoyed the food, it was very tasty. I think the pork had great flavor. The atmosphere was really cool with all the stickers and skateboard items around. I love to come here for late lunches as they tend to be super packed at peak times. Happy for them to be busy!!! Two chain burrito/taco joints have just recently opened up very close to them. I had never been to either but I must admit I tried one last week. No comparison! I was annoyed with myself because deep down I knew a chain couldn't be better or even as good. The burritos being eaten at the tables while we waited were humongous and the patrons seemed to be enjoying them. The pork tacos we got were very good. Fresh ingredients, cooked well and served hot. This is my "meet up with friends for lunch" place every single time I come home to Allentown. There are few better things in this world than the Santa Barbara. It's two chicken tacos in hard shells with soft shells on the outside. The taco is filled with chicken, cheese, lettuce, and the most delicious guacamole. Ate it today and already counting the days until I get to eat the Santa Barbara again! The housemade chips that come with all of the meals are also awesome and you have your choice of 4 fresh salsas to dip them in. I've been here so many times, I can't say enough good things about this place. The food is always great (I highly recommend the LARGE side of guacamole if you love it like we do - costs more, but we'll worth it) and there are intetesting fresh salsas to try. A chill vibe. Usually plenty of seating now even during a busy lunch. The only bummer is how they close in the afternoon for a while, I guess to prep for dinner. Flavors are good. However, I tried the Newport burrito which is mango shrimp with basamati rice, red cabbage and curry sauce. The mango shrimp was actually the little baby shrimps packed on with too much breading and there was no mango flavor at all. I expected it to be grilled shrimp and not baby shrimp at that. Also, I've been here twice and both times I felt like I was being rushed out. I understand they were closing soon but as soon as we walked in we didn't get a greeting. We got a "just so you know we're closing in 5 minutes so it has to be ordered to go." Okay, thank you. I'm doing fine by the way, thanks for asking.
