Whenever I stop into Culver City, I try to stop by India Sweets for their incredible mango lassi!! I was introduced to this spot by my mom years ago who has also been coming here for years for lunches and lassis! Parking in the area is definitely a bit challenging; there's metered street parking right outside and right by the small side street by the shop but if you're good with walking there's street parking for those that take the time to look for it down by the residential apartments nearby. India Sweets & Spices is a small Indian bodega that serves fresh Indian food + drinks as well as sells essentials for Indian cuisine and other products from India like spices, teas, henna, oils, and more! We've never had any issues with staff here and its a great place to stock up on grocery goods if you cook Indian food frequently like we do. I most recently got a curry plate which was v tasty, fresh, and quickly made and ate with my friend in their outdoor only seated (covered w/ shade!). It's not a traditional restaurant, and it's not trying to be: it's good food from friendly people at affordable prices. You'll never find another place like it, it's my favorite place in Los Angeles. A bit more detail on the food: it's cafeteria style, you choose 2 or 3 entrees from a collection of maybe 8 or 10 options, along with a side of rice/pickle. The price is usually around $13 or $15 per person if my memory serves. The options all sample very different flavor profiles (some more savory/smoky, others sweet/acidic), all truly authentic and perfectly seasoned. I love the overall bodega feel of ordering inside the market and being able to quickly choose a combo right there. What can I say--no-frills, plant-based vegan food. Is the staff particularly inviting? No. Is this the place for a date? Definitely not. Is the food delicious? Yes! From the condiments, packaged foods, to candies, one can get lost doing some unexpected shopping while waiting for their Tikka Masala Burrito or whatever plate combination they go with. Here's what I've tried: Soy Tikka Masala Burrito: Texturized soy protein with garbanzos, biryani rice, veggies, and a spicy red sauce, all nicely wrapped up in a flour tortilla. Filling Tikka Paneer Burrito: Had a bite of my friend's; the same as the aforementioned burrito with the paneer over texturized soy protein. I liked this one better--this spot makes solid paneer. Here's where it's at... Veggie samosas: I got one and it was so delicious! Flaky, dough, potatoey goodness! I could get two of these and a Paneer Pakora and consider myself a happy camper. I would (and will) travel back here to eat any of the appetizers...donuts, I'm eyeing you! This place has brought me so much joy over the years! And I mean 10+ years they have the most delicious vegetarian and vegan Indian (South Indian) food that you can find, Please do take it vantage of the unique south Indian dishes that they offer such as bitter melon as well as the lemon rice which comes with nuts and cardamom seeds, as well as their dosa which is legendary. Ordering happens fast, you choose a combo or you choose and all the card and or dosa there's also a massive refrigerator behind the register which has different flavors of Lassi as well as other drinks... Also as you were ordering you will see a whole section of Indian sweets my favorite are the saffron little cubes that taste like rice pudding that are more dense. They're also within their own market so it seems like the highlight for a lot of people that live locally or to buy the frozen Indian and fresh ingredients they need for cooking there is multiple isles of dried goods imported goods from India in addition to a whole wall of imported teas. In the past I bought a hair oil which helped my hair grow significantly I've also bought extraordinary blends of tea that I didn't know existed. The owner is a fraudster, I have caught him entering the wrong amount for grocery items twice into the register. He does not keep a proper register to show the amount for each item and hikes them up by 50-60% cause most customers will just not ask for the receipt and check individually. A lot of their food is expired, I bought a chocolate and it was nasty from inside and had expired 7 months ago. They have flies all over the place and probably rodents in their kitchen. Been a customer here for 16 plus years and the lucky recipient of a lot of love from the owner Susan and her sweet family. This is a simple yet authentic vegetarian Indian restaurant where the owner who hails from the south has the amazing and rare ability to master and present delicious dishes from both the north and the south in a cafeteria style setting where you walk up, pick the combo from the overhead menu and presto. The menu is very extensive and spans the daily fresh made lentils, beans, chick peas, spinach, eggplant and other vegetables, freshly prepared breads to order, mouth watering South Indian specialties such as dosas, idli, vadas, uttapam( veg pancake) and perhaps the best sambar( lentil soup w vegetables) you will ever experience. Their mango yogurt shake is legendary and the real deal. Their samosas are exquisite and HUGE. The accompanying sauces are divine. The prices are amazing for the quantity and caliber of this cuisine. I've been coming here for years and I'm always surprised at all the flavor in their dishes. My husband is a fan of their Sev Puri and I'm obsessed with their samosas. Everything else is delicious too- like their aloo ghobi, chana masala, and yogurt kadhi. Their grocery selection is awesome as well. India Sweet & Spices is a chai cafe, market and also offers ready made Indian food that is All Vegan/Vegetarian. Located on a very busy street Venice Bl in Culver City. This small shop has cafeteria style ready made all vegetarian Indian food that all looked appealing. The man behind the counter, Sam was very cordial, patient and helpful, as it was my first time here and he described each dish. He did have a face mask and gloves and hand sanitizers were available. The food area seemed clean enough to compel me to order a number of items, as I was curious enough to taste all that appealed to me. After paying and taking my order, there were some tables with tablecloths right beside the entryway, where I opened up my takeout orders, to snap food pics. When I got inside my car, I immediately tried a veggie samosa, which was a nice size, but bland tasting filling of mostly potatoes and very little anything else. Had to take a bite of the chili pepper pakora, which tasted better than the samosa with its smokey spicy crunchiness. Of the entries the better tasting were: eggplant potato, garbanzo beans marsala and the yellow saffron basmati rice. The two entrees I looked forward to tasting: jackfruit curry and especially the spinach cheese(Saag paneer) and white basmati rice were so most disappointingly NOT good; watered down, lacked seasoning flavor, probably previously frozen, pass on these these deserve a subpar 2 star. The shop inside looks and feels third world authentic and the kind and helpful service and attention I got from Sam deserves a 5 star. I was looking forward to trying new dishes and drove outside my comfort zone of 90210, but more than half the food I ordered just isn't as good tasting as I have had, but for the safe covid practice and kind helpful service, my 3 star. Whether you're a vegetarian or not and want to satisfy your craving for acceptable hot prepared Indian food, Indian Spices is worth a visit. read more

The prices here are pretty phenomenal and the amount of food they give you is great! The customer service is perfect. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with kindness. I love all the vegan options and I can't wait to try this place again. The lentils were filled with flavor and the samosas were so so so good. They have non vegan options too and I did not try those. You can get full with a meal and a drink for $13. That's a steal in this area of LA! Plenty of street parking available. They also have some groceries for great Indian spices if you're interested. To add to that, the food is I would say too salty 80% of the time, way way way way way too salty 40% of the time, in consistently cooked so half the time it's really tasty and half the time it's not. I would say it's like Indian comfort food. Or fast Indian comfort food. It's generally really good if you comment on a day when it's not so salty that you can't even swallow it. Which is rare. back after a long hiatus. probably for the last time. been going there for 20 years plus. they raised their prices yet again. but the quality declines- again. today it was bordering on dogfood. they charge you an extra dollar for the pilaf rice, when it's like not even a cup of rice. that one dollar could pay the difference in price compared with the white rice for an entire pound of uncooked rice grains. they probably get at least 20 portions per pound. simply no reason to take advantage of folks like that. anyways it tasted like crap. so did the 2 entrees. bitter melon and a yellow curry, the latter had nothing of substance to it. just read another commenter saying it's like they try to give you the sauce and skimp on the solid ingredients. the pakora was not good, the fried vegetable thing was hard like it had been sitting there all day. they give you the cheapest plastic utensils with a teeny napkin, the knife almost broke trying to cut the damn thing (so my friend could have a taste.) even the yogurt had no taste to it. on top of the price increases, the portions are smaller. they've just declined, and declined. oh and the ambiance if you're sitting inside, to be spared the noise and air pollution from cars going down Venice Boulevard? it's like a 3rd world dump. like they make zero effort to make the environment a bit more aesthetically pleasing. screw that place. been more than a year since I tried it again after prior disappointments. i hope they go out of business. read more

I tried this place out in the hopes of finding a place on the Westside like Namaste Spiceland, and unfortunately, this place falls a little short. I ordered a #3 combo, which includes rice, 2 dishes, naan, and a mango lassi. I picked white rice, palak paneer, and jackfruit curry ($1 extra). The white rice was not properly cooked--it was clumpy and kinda wet. The palak paneer had a good amount of paneer in it, but I found it far too salty, and the jackfruit curry was a little bland for my liking. There were spices in it, but it wasn't enough. The plate also came with yogurt and pickles, but there were literally only 4 pieces of pickles, which I found insufficient. I had asked if it was possible to substitute a sweet lassi for the mango lassi, but they said they only had mango. It was disappointing, but sure, I'll take mango then. Unfortunately, the mango lassi had a multitude of red flags. It came with ice, and although it initially tasted okay (though not thick enough or mango-y enough for me), by the time I got to the bottom, it was really watery, which makes me think it was made from powder. I also ordered pani puri, and the portion size was much smaller than I was expecting, despite the fact that it costs about the same as at Namaste Spiceland. The container of the filling is even smaller than the container of the coriander chutney. Unlike at Namaste Spiceland, the tamarind chutney is already mixed with the filling. I'm glad I tried this place, but I don't think it will be in my regular rotation. read more

I've been going to india sweets and spices since 2017 and never have I ever been this disappointed in their food/service. If I could give them negative stars I would (-5). Not only has the taste and quality of their food degraded, they served me ROTTEN rice and curries from probably (at the very least) 2 days ago. The older lady working there didn't even ask me what kind of rice I wanted she directly started filling the box with what she wanted gone ASAP which was the white rice I got handed ( which was the most rotten and the stench was unbearable as I dug into the rice ). There's other types of rice options like lemon rice tamarind rice etc. I was not happy that she did that but I decided to take the L and not say anything about it because I don't dislike white rice. Then when I got the "mutter paneer" she put all the peas in the curry and only one piece of paneer. I asked to give me a couple more pieces of paneer and she reluctantly put another piece. My upper abdomen hurts now. Called the restaurant and they offered to give me a new plate another day. I am going to bed with an empty and hurting stomach. I've been coming here for some years and always like the food. This is real Indian home style cooking. Samosas, pekoras, hot food, traditional lassi drinks, and its vegetarian. Since this is a grocery store, they have pretty much everything you could possibly want in Indian foods and spices and sauces.
