Employees not wearing masks. The reason restaurants and bars are open is because they have to follow safety guidelines to keep the safety of themselves and their customers. Since this place does not want to follow that, they shouldn't be open! One of the plate prep/servers had his mask around his chin for the most part, was wiping his nose and scratching his nose with his bare hand, then proceeded to sprinkle parsley on someone's plate and serve the customer their food. Our server who was rude and short with us and acted like he didn't want to be there, took our temporary menus and ripped them up, threw them in the garbage, and didn't sanitize his hands and proceeded to handle food afterwards. 2 employees, whom looked to maybe be management, and 1 additional female server made no attempt to wear a mask at all, as well as their cooks in the back. We were told that they aren't required to wear masks. Terrible service for only serving 2 tables, waited forever for our drinks/salads. By the time our plates were ready which took roughly 40 minutes we had it and left. Won't be coming back, and hopefully the health department shows up and shuts them down. read more

A group of us went for lunch on a weekday, all for our first time at Caliendo's. The warm bread may be the best I've ever had at a restaurant- amazing! It's a small round loaf and they didn't flinch when we asked for more. :) We were really disappointed in how slow the service was. There were only three other tables of people in the restaurant, and yet we had to wait a long time between our drinks and then to order our meal, and then a long for the salad/soup and then for our meal and then for our check. We didn't get drink refills in a timely manner either. We got there at noon and didn't get our food until 12:50. We were surprised since it was lunch time and most people only have a certain amount of time for lunch. The server was actually very sweet with a kind smile. Just really slow- maybe she had too much to do herself? I had the bambino pizza which is a small thin crust pizza for only $4.50- I added bacon for 50 cents and it was delicious! Great flavor. I had to blot the grease off with a napkin (which is typical of other places too) but it was so good. I also had the house salad which was bigger than I expected- mostly iceberg lettuce with a slice of tomato, but good Italian dressing. My coworkers seemed to overall like their meals too. One ordered the chopped salad with chicken and ate every bite, though said that they forgot to include the bacon which was listed as an ingredient. Another person had the antipasto salad which was huge, but was disappointed that it was almost all iceberg lettuce. Someone else ordered the Godmother sandwich which was a hot Italian beef and provolone sandwich on focaccia bread, with onion rings, and she was really happy with it. Everyone loved their soups too. It's a pretty small dining room (though I guess the other half of the restaurant is the bar area). They have big TV's and actually were showing HGTV type shows at lunch which I've not seen at a restaurant before. I will definitely give Caliendo's another chance and come back again for some more bread and pizza. read more

I went to Caliendo's on a Friday night with my husband, 13 year old son and sister's family, which includes 3 young children. We loved everything about our evening. The prices were pretty reasonable and the food was fantastic. I especially liked the stuffed artichokes, onion blossom and baked lasagna. My husband got the shrimp diablo pasta and was very pleased with it. What I thought was a unique touch was that upon arrival, my young nephews and niece were each given a ball of pizza dough to play with...genius!! It wasn't a quiet dining experience...and we fit right in. I think we may have been the noisiest ones there, since my nephews are just plain wild. I've worked near Calideno's for a few years now and had never stopped in. I went after work for dinner and a drink. I was pretty impressed by their wine list. They had wines from California, Italy, and France. I had an Italian pinot grigio that was delicious! For an appetizer, we had calamari that was tossed in peppers and red sauce. It was pretty salty and the calamari was a bit chewy but it was still tasty. For dinner, I ordered the Italian beef sandwich. I think it was $8.99 and came with soup or salad and a side. It was A LOT for food for the price and everything was yummy! Our service was average. The manager came over to make sure everything was tasting good. They have a very large menu and they have different happy hour specials each day. Overall I would absolutely come back to try some other things off the menu. Given that I was a fan of these guys way back in the Winfield house days, not to mention that since John's Buffet closed Caliendo's in the biggest game in Winfield, I REALLY want to like these guys. But I just don't. I've given this place three tries and I just can't see myself ever going again. First, the staff isn't all that friendly. Even on days when there isn't a rush, they seem super busy and cranky or snooty. It just ruins the appeal of a small town watering hole. Second, the food isn't worth it. It's certainly not worth the price anyway. We ordered the big appetizer, it's called the familia combo. Pretty standard: cheese sticks, potato skins, pizza bread, bruschetta, and wings. $19. The cheese sticks were nothing special. I'm pretty sure I could get the same kind out of the freezer section at Target. The potato skins were really dry, my guess is that those are also frozen and just had toppings slapped on them out of the oven. The pizza bread was so-so, the bruschetta was actually pretty good. It was standard bruschetta, nothing special, but very good. The wings were also nothing to write home about. Very meh. This time around I ordered the sausage and peppers, which were reasonably priced at $9. I wasn't impressed. They were just Italian sausage and sweet peppers pan fried with some potatoes. It has barely any of that lovely red sauce most Italian sausage and pepper dishes have. Not to mention the potatoes were cold, and the sausage was just warm instead of hot, as if they'd been under a warmer. This is a cute local Winfield restaurant that has a large menu of pasta, pizza and other items. They have specials during some days. Went here on a Saturday night for crab legs and didn't have to wait for a table. The person who seated us was very friendly and so was our server. However, service after that wasn't uber-fantastic. More on that later. I have been wanting to go here for about a year for their Saturday night crab legs and was a little disappointed after such a long wait and the anticipation. To start, my meal came with soup or salad, the crab legs and a side. I went with the salad, but skipped the side and just saved all my room for crab legs. The crab legs were good sized, but they weren't very hot, which meant by the time I got less than half-way through eating them, they were cold. The butter served with them was lukewarm at best and that meant that at one point both the crab and butter were room temperature, if not slightly cold. I asked for a second butter and that came out pretty much room temperature also. I am not one who likes my crab legs cold served like this, so this is where my disappointment came in. It takes awhile to eat crab legs and with everything not being steaming hot to begin with, the meal was just not great for me. I realize it was all you could eat, but I couldn't eat more than the one serving and for $38, I would have just expected something better. Hubby got the steak wrap and said it was good, but not spectacular. A solid 3 out of 5. He wouldn't get it again. Cuts of steak weren't bad, not fatty, but the wrap was just ok Service was very dismal. She was friendly, but we had to wait a long time to get drinks and refills were not forth-coming. And considering it was all you can eat, coming back to see if I needed more would have been nice. It was busy, but the other tables around us did not seem to have this issue. I felt like I had to flag her down too often to get her to come to our table. We have eaten several times at this restaurant and I wouldn't let this stop us from going back. We have had really good meals of pizza and pasta previously. I would likely not go back for their crab legs, though. read more

A family member had an overnight stay at CDH this week and needless to say we missed dinner. We dialed up local pizza joints and Caliendo's popped up & I remembered having their pizza previously at a friend's house. We ordered a cheese and sausage pizza and I must say this was one of the best tasting pizzas I ever had! The crust was golden brown and perfectly done, there was a right amount of sauce and plenty of sausage. I'll be buying a pizza bag from Amazon and will be traveling to Caliendo's for pizza. Yes, they're that good! Dec. 4th, 2017 Well I finally bought that pizza bag. It arrived today and I ordered up a pie from Caliendo's tonight. The pizza was good but nowhere near as good as in my above post. I'm kinda disappointed because I was expecting a great pizza tonight. Im updating my review because i believe they either switched cooks or are cutting corners because the food has gone down hill. We have ordered pizza here 5 times after the our first sauce less pizza, hoping the first few times were a fluke but we have given up after today. There is no pizza sauce on the pizza just cheese bread. At first glance it appears to have a nice layer of sauce due to the edges always have some but absolutely none in the middle or end of the edge pieces. After that 1st time, the next we asked for extra sauce and still, no sauce. Today there was air bubbles in the middle pieces of pizza in which i knew the pizza was going to be dry. My favorite dinner item was their steak medallions because the veggies/steak was cooked perfectly but now my gosh you almost crack a tooth biting into the charred meat now. There sausage and peppers are still good but thats not why we order here. Obviously it is for the pizza in which we would order every weekend or minimum once a month. I dont know what happened but we will not be returning which is a shame as this was our favorite pizza place. read more

I like the food in this place. I wish they have a good customer service too. Usually I take out food after work but last 7/29 I ordered pizza , and chop salad and added chicken for a total of 35.99. I came home my salad didn't have chicken that I paid for 4 dollars so I called the guy working that day and he didn't even give me a credit. I gave it another chance so I ordered this evening 8/12 to take out again and paid 56 dollars for my order and I told the guy that last time I ordered chop salad and paid 4 dollars for chicken to be added but I didn't get it. I even showed my receipt and the guy didn't offer any credit for the 4 dollars even if I Paid 57 dollars for my order. He said I could have called that day which I did. I guess he only think about the 4 dollars not the 56 dollar I spent tonight. It's not about the 4 dollars but this places need people who have good customer service not staff who thinks people just love to Complain for free food. Very disappointed. My boyfriend, his parents and I were in the area when we decided to stop at Caliendo's for lunch. His parents split the salad and we split the pizza. We had great and patient service. The food took a little long to arrive but it was definitely worth it. The pizza's crust was nice and crunchy and we realized there was poppy seeds on the bottom which added a surprisingly delicious taste. His parents loved the salad and the chicken was plentiful. It was the perfect amount for both of them. Overall it was a wonderful experience and if I'm ever in town again I will definitely come back! read more

The bar looks like a fun place to go for drinks, but if you're planning on eating here I would suggest not doing so. The food in general was bad to mediocre. It was on par with fast food, which was not what I was expecting. The food came back as soon as we put in the order. In fact, the food got to us before the soup. Unfortunately, the soup was so bad that I couldn't eat it. The bread was okay, the chips were really dry, and my Italian beef was bland. The service seemed bizarre as in disorganized, misinformed, or had a lack of experience. For instance, we didn't have a beer menu so I asked what beers were on tap and the waiter replied, "we have beer." After that response I decided to go basic and get a bud light and he brought me a bottled beer. Seems odd to bring someone a bottled beer after being asked what is on tap. There's a lot I can pick apart about the service, but I think what I've said is enough. Next door there is a bar called the union house kitchen and their macaroni looked amazing. Caliendo's is the mullet of sports bar/restaurant combos. It's separated into two sections: one half is a fully-stocked sports bar with an outdoor patio area and the other half is a restaurant leaning heavily toward Italian food. Their sports bar is a good place to hang out. They have pretty good beer specials and the regular crowd is not consistently old balls -- as John's (the dive across the street) or Muldoon's (across town) are -- so that's always a welcome plus. The restaurant is odd though. The food is alright but they've tried to create the ambiance of a nice, quaint Italian restaurant. There are candles on each table and the room was designed with mood lighting in mind. The problem is that, well, it's next to a really loud sports bar. So you'll be eating your fettucine alfredo in a dimly-lit restaurant with Gwen Stefani's "Sweet Escape" blaring into your ear. I wouldn't go to Caliendo's on a big date but it's a pretty good place to have a couple of drinks with your friends. Having access to an expanded menu at a bar comes up big, especially as the night wears on. It's a mullet: classy fettucine alfredo in the front, Gwen Stefani booty music in the back. read more

Before I begin, I must preface this review by stating that I'm something of a food connoisseur and a restaurant aficionado. Having written my first restaurant review for the Sun Times at age 6, I quickly decided that my passion in life would be food. I never went to college and I live out of my 2001 Yukon in order to save money for all of the restaurant trips I make throughout the year. I'm what some might consider "homeless" but I like to call it "living free". Enough about me though, ON TO THE CALIENDO'S ADVENTURE! When you first enter the establishment, you are taken back by the classy decor, the exquisite marble floor and the hand carved oak tables. The air smells of sweet dew on a Spring morning and the temperature is a perfect 68.2 degrees. I chose a table along the artfully crafted windows that faced the street and was greeted by a pleasant gentleman who informed me of the days food and drink specials. I was then handed a menu while he went to fullfil my cognac order. The quality of the menu, not the contents of the menu, was astounding. Raised lettering, pale nimbus, subtle off-white coloring. It even had a watermark on the front. It felt like I was holding something scuplted by our forefathers. The shock and awe did not stop there. Each item on the menu must have been painstakingly chosen by top chefs from around the Midwest. Crab legs, lobster bisque, bread, calzones bigger than a small child, pizza, duck and pheasant, just to name a few. The drink menu was no less specatular with over 150 beer choices, 97 wine choices and 72 of the best hard alchohol choices I have ever come across. I went with the lobster bisque appetizer, the duck as my main course (with sides of fresh vegetables grown in-house and a baked potato, also grown in-house). Dessert was a delectable chocole mousse (more on that later). The bisque - Rich, creamy, amazingly flavored Maine lobster. Quite simply, a 5/5. The duck - Beautifully presented. Tender, succulent. The vegetables tasted as fresh as they looked and the potato was cooked to perfection. The included, already melted butter added to the delight. 5/5 The chocolate mousse - As you would expect by now, another home run. A delight to the senses and my supermodel girlfriend was in extacy the rest of the evening. 5/5 By now, you must be thinking, "Mike, surely there are cons to Caliendo's"...and unfortunately there are in the form of pricing. In my vastly superior opinion, they have under priced themselves. My total for two people for the night, with 7 drinks between us was only 87.98. Under 100 dollars!! I could not believe my eyes. You can't find this kind of value ANYWHERE in the Chicago area. Especially with as big as the portions were. Simply stunning. In conclusion, if you are in Winfield and on Winfield Rd and you come across the little strip that houses Caliendo's and other restaurants, save yourself the disappointment and your wallet, avoid those other places and walk straight in to Caliendos. You will not find a better menu, better company, and better value anywhere else in Illinois. read more

Winfield House as it will forever be known to me was pizza I grew up on. The had a wonderful double dough and 4 star atmosphere. However since they moved the good side tracks of the tracks they've lost they're touch. The pizza has changed. It's almost the same but as if they've forgotten a secret ingredient. The bar has changed. There were dudes in Winfield House that literally held the establishment up, they would play dice at the bar and it was not well lit. It could almost be called dicey, but 5-star dicey. It definitely had the feel that anything could happen and it often did. The new Caliendo's has a sports bar feel, HD TVs, beer specials and those kind of places are a dime a dozen. RIP Winfield House, I miss you. read more

Sausage & Giardiniera pizza = AWESOME!!! I like Caliendo's and I like their pizza. Not too sure about having a noisy sports bar on one side and restaurant on the other because I'm sure that the noise carries over to those who are trying to enjoy their meal in peace. I recommend coming here to grab a drink with some friends & have some pizza. Man up & get their spicy Giardiniera on your pizza. DO IT. I've heard that Caliendo's is a great place to watch the Bears. I've been told that if you show up before 2nd quarter you get a raffle ticket for raffles throughout the game, AND you get to partake in the pizza buffet during halftime. Disappointing experience...ordered a cheese pizza which was not terrible but not great. The wings were decent but the salad we ordered but completely wilted and huge pieces of brown lettuce...how can you serve that? I also asked for vinegarette for the salad and they literally just gave me balsamic vinegar. I can put all that aside mostly but the worst part was the customer service. The girl who answered when we placed the order was so incredibly rude. Had an attitude a mile long. That alone will prevent me from ever ordering or going there again. I get times are stressful with short staffing but I literally got off the phone after ordering and wanted to call back and just cancel the order. read more

This place isn't far from where one of my brother's lives. He says since Winfield is really small town, population less than 9,000, he says that having a decent place to sit down to eat is nice. Newly opened Caliendo's has great pizza, salads, and burgers. It's no Kuma's but it did the trick. Very busy for a Thursday night, we were sat quickly, but the service wasn't so hot. Looks like a lot of teenagers work here after school. Katie our server was sweet, but she wasn't really fast or knowledgeable about the menu. Oh well. We weren't too hungry when we came here, so we just ordered appetizers. We chose to eat in bar area since we had a kid with us. What was pretty nice was that they gave our son a ball of pizza dough to play with while we were waiting for our order. I ordered bruschetta and stuffed mushrooms. I know that bruschetta can be made different ways, but my bread was extra soggy with all the juices from the tomatoes - not the way I like my bruschetta! My stuffed mushrooms were really salty, too. We didn't have a slow server, our server was a fairly new employee, so perhaps they have read the previous reviews! This is a small place with maybe 10 tables on the dining side and a great bar side. We ate on the restaurant side. Most of the menu items are around $7. We ate a lot. First there were stuffed mushrooms and bruschetta for appetizers. The bruschetta was great, the stuffed mushrooms ok. They had some kind of yellow cheese on them and it just didn't work for me. Hubby had make your own burger which he said was great, but he got lettuce and no tomato. You had to ask for a tomato which we found kind of weird, but whatever. I had the whitefish which had a great sauce on it and it came with a salad. Whenever I go out, I get dessert. It's part of my dining experience. The dessert choices here are pretty limited which disappointed me. They had gelato, tiramisu and ice cream with a variety of toppings. I wanted maximum chocolate, but there wasn't any! The tiramisu turned out to be just right, not too dry and not too creamy. At the end of our meal we asked if they took dinner reservations. When my whole family goes out, which is kind of rare, there are 6 of us. That can make getting a table kind of hard, but they take reservations. We were drawn to Caliendos for their outside seating and nice looking sports bar but wow were we in for a surprise! We waited 15 minutes just to get our drink order in, another 5 for our drinks another 15 to order our food and a good 30 minutes for it to come out! By far the worst service I have had in years and this is coming from someone who has worked in the restaurant business. Upon confronting the manager he was rude and had an attitude, didn't offer to comp anything and sat at the bar the whole time. All I can give this place is 3 stars. It's OKAY, but truly doesn't live up to the hype it seems to get from others. - Pizza is just OKAY. Sorry, it is not that great. Try Garibaldi's in Hoffmann Estates for that. - Various other food items I have had = JUST OKAY. - Burgers - JUST OKAY. Fries were decent as I remember. - Nachos - literally small Tostito chips out of the bag and basic Gehl's cheese sauce (which is near tasteless). You could make better at home with the cheap ingredients from your grocery store. Across the street at John's restaurant, they have about the best nachos I have had. Complete night and day from what you get here. Haven't been here in awhile and I am in no rush to go back. The place is just OKAY - it is really just another run-of-the-mill sports type restaurant and bar. Years ago, it used to be kiddie-corner across the street and was known as the Winfield House, which had a much different atmosphere than a trendy sports-bar. Winfield House closed/moved and became Caliendo's around 2004-ish. I highly recommend John's Restaurant across the street if you truly want some great food. read more
