We've been meaning to come for dinner for a while now, but it never worked out. In season this is a hard Rez, especially in the 530-7 range. Most all seating is outdoors, they do have a very small interior. As a result, they close for the summer for three months. Too hot!! Check the website. Our dinner at John Henry's Café, a well-known hidden gem in Palm Springs, was a treat. Though "well-known" and "hidden gem" sound contradictory, the restaurant sits off the main tourist path behind the Sunrise Center strip shopping area (home of a Dollar Tree.) The restaurant has a charming, nostalgic retro vibe with an intimate interior and a large outdoor patio strung with twinkling lights and greenery. I enjoyed the Roast Turkey Dinner from the chef's specials -- generous portions of both white and dark meat with mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, and homemade cranberry sauce. We were told it appears on the specials menu "every day" during peak season. I can see why -- it was superb. My partner chose the Chicken Piccata: grilled chicken breast in a bright, tangy lemon‑and‑caper sauce, served with sautéed green beans and buttered carrots. Our party also ordered the sautéed veal liver, milder than beef liver and served smothered in sautéed onions and crisp bacon for a sweet‑and‑salty crunch. And the meatloaf was equally good -- moist, flavorful, and topped with a savory tomato sauce. All entrees came with a choice of soup or salad; the four of us had the Chop Chop Salad -- finely chopped iceberg and romaine with bleu cheese crumbles, diced tomatoes, and red onion. Famous for its massive homemade cakes, we finished up by sharing a slice of the Sunny Lemon Cake. Large enough for four people to share and served a la mode with a pint (no kidding) of vanilla ice cream. Yum. Definitely worth a visit when you're in Palm Springs. read more

An overrated restaurant IMO. We hadn't enjoyed two sips of our cocktails when our dinner salads were already brought out to the table. And because our cocktails were way too vodka infused, it didn't do the taste of the salads any favors; my dinner salad was positively soggy in a mound of onions and honey-mustard dressing. Our right-on-the-heels entrees were nothing to write home about and in fact bordered on disappointing. I suppose the outdoor patio experience makes up for a lot. What a lovely outdoor garden area they have to dine under the stars. The staff here was very friendly and accommodating. The food was solid with a wide variety of herrings on the menu. I had shrimp and scallop scampi-style and it was fresh and perfectly cooked. I did notice quite a few of the tables were celebrating birthdays and saw quite a few large cake slices getting passed around, one day I'll have to come back and try the cake. read more

Great start! I heard friends talking about this place and haven't been able to make it until now. I was able to get a reservation on thier last night before closing for the summer. I started with the broiled artichoke. This was a great start! The artichoke with parmesan tasted on top was so flavorful. For my main, I ordered the beef stroganoff. The beef was so tender with the egg noodles cooked to perfection and the sauce topped it off, Yum!! It also came with carrots and green beans. Loved the veggies!! The ambiance was surprising, I'm not sure what to expect, but it was smaller than I thought. Interesting art on the walls. I was hoping it would have been cooler so I could enjoy the outside seating with the big tree and lights, but I'll definitely come back when they open. Yesterday was Thanksgiving. We've been to Trio then Spencer's the previous 2 years living here. JH was superb! We had a 5:30pm reservation; when we arrived we were ushered into our indoor table. The restaurant has some lovely artwork throughout of tasteful big bottomed gals! The waitress we had was professional and immediately brought our drink order and took our 2 orders for the Turkey Special dinner. ($69 per person if you're wondering) As you can see in the attached photo, the meal was plentiful and I will tell you it was delicious. My hubby had the chop-chop salad & I the green garden one. Desert of pumpkin pie with vanilla ice cream followed was the perfect ending of our meal. We were out in 30 mins. Leaving there must have been 20 more waiting to dine! I hope they all had just as nice of a time as we did! BTW, both owners came by our table, and shook our hands. I wished both a Happy Thanksgiving. read more

It was an outstanding evening with excellent service and food. This is a restaurant with outside dining and it was a perfect evening with all the beautiful trees lit up with lights. The host and the staff were the best. The drink order was taken immediately and large martinis were served. The waiter was very kind and got all of our dishes, correct. The service was exceptional and the food was above average. The half duck was actually quite good, however, the crab cakes were more cake than crab. I grew up near Maryland and these were NOT Maryland style crab cakes. The house salad was average and to have to pay an additional $5.00 for a Caesar that has less ingredients is outrageous. Additionally, the multiple up charges for every little modification: $1.00 additional for each separate check, $2.00 to make a substitution, $12.00 for a split plate charge, and I already mentioned the $5.00 salad up charge. I understand why the locals may like John Henry's for the patio dining, which provided a pleasant outdoor ambiance. However, if I am going to be up charged for every little thing, there are plenty of dining gems in the Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, and Palm Desert area that do not 'bank fee' you to exhaustion. read more

Having lived in Palm Springs for nearly 5 years, our friends were surprised we had never been. We were greeted and taken to our outdoor table, which was well appointed and a beautiful setting (large tree in the center). We started with a shrimp cocktail and really enjoyed that. I had the pork chops, and my husband got the kielbasa. Both were outstanding and good sized portions. We didn't get dessert this time, but will save room for the next. The grilled salmon is flavorless. No flavor, nothing. It was not buttery, it was not lemony, it was not peppery, it was not salty, and the only thing you could taste was the grape ginger sauce. That's it. And the salt that I had to add twice that probably should have been added when it was cooked. Switching to lemon butter did nothing to help. I could taste the lemon butter but no salmon. You can see from the picture that they've added no seasoning and have hardly grilled it. It's no wonder there's no flavor. So the manager did take 50% off of the bill. That was, however, after he told me that he wasn't going to take anything off of the bill because in his 10 years of managing no one had ever complained about the salmon. Ever. And that they're a small restaurant and can't afford to give away food. Apparently they can't afford salt and pepper, either The interaction with the manager was the only part of the dinner that was more tasteless than the salmon. It's a once five-star restaurant that's totally tanked. read more

Poor service, so-so food. We heard good things about this restaurant but were very disappointed with our visit. Upon arrival the server was hyper focused on what we wanted to drink rather than making us feel welcome. We spent much of our evening looking at the backside of our neglectful server as he held more than one lengthy conversation with the table directly in front of us. The Curry Chicken dinner was misnamed on the menu as it was a sweet Hawaiian sauce and the meal had much more pineapple than chicken. The Meatloaf was tasteless, "whipped," and drowned in a bland, watered down tomato sauce. Getting a refill on a soda required reminders to the server. On the positive side the garden salads were tasty and the folks in charge of serving the baskets of bread were attentive. We were extremely disappointed and will not return. read more

We hadn't been to JH for a while so we were excited to go back to one of our favorite places. We were stuck at a back corner table which wasn't pleasant . They have added more tables outside and the ambiance wasn't as special as it was so crowded. The service was very disappointing and the food wasn't what it use to be. Of course the prices have gone up, more than I had expected. Don't rush back there if you haven't been recently. It's now off my list. read more

Not much has changed except the prices are higher. Once again, we were rushed through our meal so that the restaurant could turn the table over quickly. The waitstaff was attentive and pleasant. We arrived early in the evening and were quickly greeted and shown to a great table outside. Points for honoring our reservation. Our drinks, including my very large martini were well made and reasonably priced. As soon as we had ordered our drinks we were pressed to order our entrees which we did. Our soup and salad appetizers were delivered within a minute of ordering and our entrees followed a few minutes after that. So much for enjoying a drink an conversation over dinner We had ordered osso buco and lamb shanks both of which were very good. The side vegetables were done properly and seasoned nicely. I don't believe the menu has changed in a very long time (other than the prices), but there should be something for most tastes. The For dessert we had a slice of cake to share which was presented without silverware. I hunted some down indoors.There was no offer for coffee nor after dinner drinks and we were presented the bill. In summary, I will probably put JH on hiatus. As I said a number of years ago, if I want fast food, I can go to McDonalds. read more

Had dinner at JH's this evening with a table of nine. To say the table was crowded would be an understatement. I felt cramped having to straddle a table leg for the evening. Our server was competent at best. He took or beverage orders fairly promptly but we only saw him again when time came to order our meals. Meals came out in an almost auctioneer fashion. The server announced what he was holding and you had to speak up as to match what you ordered. My entree, the beef stroganoff, was bland to say the least. I've seen better presentations from a Stouffer's frozen dinner. To be honest, JH's has stuffed too many tables in too tight of a space to be a comfortable dining experience. While I understand the thought behind recognizing customer birthdays, shutting off lights in the middle of meals is not necessary nor is it pleasant for those who are not celebrating. Sorry JH...but you've lost your mojo and I'm not sure you're going to get it back. read more

My spouse and I came for our 8th year wedding anniversary. This was my first time back in 23 years! We were a bit early for our reservation but were seated quickly. I was apprehensive about sitting on the patio given it's such a breezy January evening. However, the patio experience was fantastic given so many outdoor heaters; understand, I was wearing short sleeve shirt and no jacket and didn't mind at all. Julie was our server. She was outgoing, friendly, professional and very attentive. If there was Server of the Year, it would be Julie. We didn't wait for anything and the delivery of our food, from apps to main meal, just seemed to flow effortlessly. The salmon was just crispy enough on the outside and ohhh so tender/moist on the inside. I brought home half of the baked half chicken. The mashed potato's were excellent. The green beans were the perfect blend of crunchy/cooked. The carrots - I don't even know what made them out of this world: honey baked?! Here is the big service test for me. We NEVER sat with dirty plates in front of us and never had to ask that they be cleared. That alone - I'll be back again and again. Great service all evening. Very festive atmosphere for New Year's Eve! We sat outside in the garden. Smallish street sign. No on site parking. Just parked 2 blocks away. Not so bad. We all had their 4 course New Years Eve menu w Champagne. We started with a very nice Shrimp crostini type dish, next a Cesar salad - good crisp lettuce - just right amount of dressing. Main was Surf + Turf. (Were other course options). The Surf - lobster tail was good - steak (filet mignon) was somewhat bland. The sauce served was just ok. To he fair I love my steaks fatty The dessert I had was a really good trio of sorbets. Beautifully presented - hubby had their Creme Brulee which was Excellent! Decent bread served too. The menu special was $99/person which seemed fait. The champagne was your own mini split + nice + dry. I would return. read more

I don't see the appeal, the venue is okay, the food is subpar, menu is confusing. Came here with family, we all got different dishes. I got the beef stroganoff it was okay nothing special. The flavors were bland, but the meat was tender. The broccoli cheddar soup I got with my entree was okay, but tasted like it came from a can. The only real highlight was service, everyone was super friendly and quick to serve us! Also portion control is kind of weird, why does everything come with broccoli and carrots?!? read more

We live in Calabasas, CA, and visit Palm Desert two to three times a year, and every visit includes a dinner at "JOHN Henry's. While staying in Palm Desert, our resort is 25 to 30 minutes driving distance from the restaurant, but the drive is worth it. read more
