The trip to Moor Park from the SFV is not too bad, a pleasurable ride, on the smooth 118 (around 20 minutes if you keep within the speed limits), and judiciously choose the time to travel. I came here to try out California Bun, an eatery that has harnessed an interesting (long overdue) concept, to package portable food. Here they prepare snack sized bites (or a little more) of favorite food fancies, enveloped in a daily fresh baked round brioche bun. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The store is high ceiling, spacious and large, with ample space to dine in or carry out.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It is a mom and pop joint, that is slowly but surely, beginning to make a mark. [[HIGHLIGHT]]On the main wall, elegantly displayed, are all the many enticing varieties, for the day.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My visit was designed to take something to go. The conundrum here is, what to order, because there were so many inviting choices that were talking to you. I finally decided to select three of these evenly browned and differently topped buns. The El Sabroso (Egg, cheddar & jack cheese, bacon & Jalapeno salsa, garnished with Cheese, bacon & jalapeño). The Roadside Burger (Seasoned ground beef, grilled onions, white American cheese, & secret house burger sauce, garnished with Cheese & bacon). The Mac Daddy (Creamy mac and cheese with a cheddar, jack, and parmesan cheese blend, garnished with Panko bread crumbs). So whats the verdict? The Mac Daddy was my least favorite. In comparing the other two, the Roadside Burger seemed to have the higher of (inside filling/inside bread) ratio, as compared to the El Sabroso. However, the latter is the most attractive bun on the outside and overall, contains a good mix of flavors and slight kick. Any food with a visible Jalapeño is a magnet, for me. Still, this concoction needs more of the egg mixture, to achieve the right balance. In general, all 3 buns were soft, had a nice texture, bread taste and chew. The buns are a fun novelty, and would be great to grab on the go! I enjoyed the biscuits and gravy flavor the best out the three options I chose. Unfortunately, I did have a pretty bad ordering experience. While the staff were super friendly, our order was forgotten about! This was the first visit, so I wasn't too sure how long it should take to get our food. However, I started to notice that people who came in after us were receiving their food before us. I took my Daughter to try this place because we were curious about it since we keep hearing good things about it. I just have a jalapeño bite and the cinnamon iced latte and both were splendid. Very glad to have finally tried out this bun shop in the 805. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable with the menu. The location has plenty of indoor and a few outdoor seats. Parking lot is shared in a shopping center. The food was good and fresh. I t was a little disappointing that they could not replenish some of there products while we were willing to wait for it. We showed up around 11:00 am for an early lunch and they were out of Lil Links. Those are small enough to make more of and my kids were willing to wait for them, but they refused to make more. Mmm California bun, my type of place! Locally owned, unique food, and great service is what you can expect here. I came at the perfect time right before the lunch rush. It has been open for about four months now so I have been overdue to try. With so many options it was hard to choose. Staff was friendly and fantastic in walking me through the various flavors and options. To eat there, I ordered the two bun combo. I tried the farm boy and southern bbq which are best sellers. Both were good but I really enjoyed the farm boy! Tempted to try other breakfast buns now. I did order an additional dozen buns to go. I went with a wide variety and tried a lot of flavors. Located in the Tuscany Square Shopping Center in Moorpark, California Bun just opened in December and the food looked good online so we decided to give it a shot. There's patio seating out front but plenty of seating inside (quite spacious). There were only a handful of people inside so finding a seat wasn't an issue. You order at the counter and go pick it up once your order is ready. We ordered 4 buns - BBQ with Seoul, Southern BBQ, Boomtown and Mac Daddy. They were served in a bag on a tray so there's no way of knowing which bun is which until you cut into it. To be honest, all the buns were very dry. Wish we knew that beforehand - we would've ordered some sauce to go along with them (but they charge extra for that; ketchup packets are for free btw). Surprised even the mac & cheese was more noodles and not very cheesy/creamy at all. My better half thought all the buns could've used more seasoning and noted that the buns should've been hotter since they weren't very warm even though we ate them there. The buns aren't very big so they're more snacks than an actual meal. Overall we thought California Bun was meh. We certainly wouldn't go out of our way to go there. Napkins, utensils, salt/pepper and ketchup are self-serve next to the refrigerated drinks. I'd rate them a 3.5/5 but rounded up to 4 since they're still a new business so there's going to be some kinks to work out. Yum! I came across California Bun strictly by chance - I was actually looking at a local coffee shop. However, I'm so glad that I stopped by. California Bun is a relatively new establishment located in a large plaza in Moorpark. No issues with finding a place to park. I walked in and was immediately impressed by the clean layout and inviting array of buns in display. They all looked delicious but I ended up picking the BBQ with Seoul, based on recommendation. The bun was very savory and really hit the spot! I waited about ten minutes for the fresh bun to be warm and ready, and the wait was definitely worth it. The size of the bun is enough for a solid snack, so I would order at least two if you are hungry. Servers were welcoming and friendly.
