Like a really bad fish fillet from McDonald's, the crust was dense and oily and tasteless: it's like they fried it in a Panini press. The fish was mushy inside. French fries were soggy, and tasteless and awful. The tartar sauce was like something made in a warehouse in Fresno and shipped in a hot truck. Oh, a new California Fish Grill location in the El Paseo de Saratoga Mall, where Mimi's Cafe, REI, AMC 14 Theaters, Jamba Juice, etc. Plenty of parking in this plaza. This CFG offers outside table seating with umbrellas, and as usual, they have inside seating with A/C and house music playing. Self-serve fountain machine. Two separate multi-user restrooms. We stopped in for Taco Tuesday and a Cinco de Mayo promo. My wife ordered two Battered Fish Tacos. I went with the Cajun Shrimp and the Battered Fish Taco. The shrimp used at this location looked smaller and overcooked. I usually order these exact tacos from other locations and they are cooked perfectly and the shrimp are a bit larger. Finally got to use the gift cards we received for Christmas and excited to finally try this place out. There were 4 of us in our party with 2 x $50 gift cards so we ordered more than usual and the greeter Antonio was super helpful navigating the kiosk to make sure placing the orders and payment method was correct. When we brought the meals home we discovered that 3 sides were missing and we didn't want to go back but I did mention this issue when I received the feedback link from the website to grade the experience and its been one week since the event with no response from the place that they received the survey or any email/txt follow up from the management team. Overall the initial service was great and the items we ordered were ok but unfortunately the execution fell short on confirming the order was correct and we used up all of out gift cards so a return visit will not be in our future. read more

We got the salmon and swai combination BOGO. The salmon was pretty good especially with the garlic butter but the swai fish was slightly tough and flavorless. The sides were all quite good. We got rice, side salad (they forgot to include the salad dressing), zucchini, tomatoes, street corn, and the garlic bread. It was actually a lot of food and I have no complaints about the sides. I came here with a group of friends for dinner. I didn't realize this had opened up. I was excited to see that there were some chargers in front - but they apparently don't work? That's a different review, I guess. It was a weekday around 5:30 when we got there. It was packed - lots of groups and families. We waited in line for about 10 minutes to order (either at the kiosk or with a staff member) after grabbing an area to sit. I ended up ordering the grilled swai with corn, fries and sweet potato fries to share. One of my friends got the fish burger while two got the fish and chips and one had the shrimp bowl. People's order started coming out and looked delicious. I ordered ahead of my friend, but she got hers first. No problem - maybe the plate just needed more time. After another 10 minutes, I go check and they said they were waiting for my fries - but my plate was already out on the tray. I asked to take my plate and they said they'll bring my fries when they were out. A few minutes later, both sets of fries came out. My plate was yummy - the corn was great and the fish had a good flavor (cajun). I liked the fries, but think they could have been better. Everyone else liked their dishes as well. I was eyeing the tacos, so I will be back to try them out. Service was fine and the atmosphere was lively. It's a nice casual place to get some food with friends, family and/or a date - and while it was possible to have a conversation with my group, it did get loud at times. My first time here and we had a very good meal. You order through a Self service kiosk, but there's plenty of friendly employees who were there to help us with questions and guide us through the order. We had the chicken bowl and the tuna bowl. Both were hearty, healthy and flavorful. Big props to the employees who were very attentive and proactive. The manager told me they now have 67 (don't do it!!) locations after their first location in Santa Ana and are aggressively opening new locations. I Had a chance to try California Fish Grill, which had been on my radar for quite some time ever since it opened close by to us. The food here is simple but on the healthy side and very flavorful. We ended up trying the swai and salmon combo with rice and the zucchini veggies which was awesome. Both fish were grilled to perfection which i really loved. I'll attribute part of this to my having ordered rockfish (grilled) - the consistency and taste just doesn't seem great and people that don't care for fish wouldn't be converted by rockfish. My friend had the breaded rockfish and the breading just looked a little thick and caked on versus lighter and fluffier. Perhaps this was intentional, as the pictures of the more traditional fish and chips looks normal. I liked the look (but I didn't order it or taste it) of the clam chowder. I will say that the sides (kale slaw, white rice) were good and the seasoning was on-point. Meaning, for me, it was nicely and fairly lightly seasoned, which shows some restraint and wasn't a case where the philosophy is just to bombard you with strong overpowering flavors. That can be impressive for the first few bites, but it gets old. I was also pleased with the fact that everything was light, so I felt like I ate a big plate, but didn't feel like I was sluggish or going to enter a food coma. I would like to try this again and try a different fish besides rockfish. Once you step inside, head to the 2 kiosks to place your order. You include your phone number in order to receive a text message once your food is ready. Staff were all friendly and helpful. I didn't realize until the end of our meal that there aren't any trash cans. Staff buss the tables, so you just leave your dishes at the table once you are done. Might be nice for them to consider having one trash can somewhere in case folks want to drop off small trash items. On to the food! Grilled Plate w/ Atlantic Salmon | $16.25 I ordered mine with grilled asparagus and kaleslaw as my 2 sides. The salmon itself was a bit thinner than I'd expected and was also dry. Perhaps they can consider grilling it a tad shorter so that the fish can stay moist. The kaleslaw was nice and crunchy, but could've used a brighter salad dressing or maybe some lemon. It was a little bland. The 5 stalks of grilled asparagus were tasty, with just 1 of the stalks being stringy and tougher to chew. Battered Fish and Shrimp | $13.50 Got these with a side of asparagus and fries. Everything fried was wonderful! Fries were crispy and the fish batter was delicious and didn't get soggy. The shrimp was also well cooked without being rubbery or overcooked. I would order this again. Parmesan Brussel Sprouts| $5.75 Slightly crispy outer leaves. Deliciously seasoned. They did a great job on this appetizer! Soft Drinks |$3.50 Lots of interesting flavors to choose from. My favorites were the acai berry, root beer, and cherry flavors. However, I did notice that the syrups seemed to run out over time. When I tried the pineapple soda, that one tasted like soda water. When I later got a refill for the acai soda, that one also straight up tasted like soda water. Would recommend staff checking the machine periodically to make sure there's enough syrup and that all is functioning correctly. Overall, I had a nice dining experience here. The restaurant has some small quality items to work out, so hopefully those will be ironed out soon. Their Grand Opening is today - 8/4/2025. I came with my fiancé and we were both extremely pleased with our meals. We ordered the Breaded Shrimp ($8.50) starter to share. I ordered the Branzino Grilled Plate ($15.99) and chose the Kaleslaw and Quinoa, Edamame, Rice (+$2.75 up charge) as my two sides. My fiancé ordered the Battered Fish Taco Plate ($13.99) and he chose French Fries, and Dynamite Fries as his sides. We also both got a fountain drink ($3.50 each). This is an extremely affordable option for seafood. It's healthy and all the seafood is 100% sustainably sourced so that's an added plus. The Branzino was cooked perfectly and not fishy at all. The Kaleslaw was lightly dressed and the Quinoa, Edamame, Rice was fluffy and flavorful. My fiancé really enjoyed his fish tacos, but did say that he would choose something other than fries the next time we visit as they weren't the best. Upon entering, you order at one of the two kiosks. You enter your phone number and they will text you when your food is ready. There is plenty of interior seating and outdoor patio seating as well. So fortunate to be able to try the new California Fish Grill at El Paseo in Saratoga (at the location of the old Mimi's Cafe) at their soft opening before their official grand opening this week. As a seafood lover, I've been wanting to try California Fish Grill, but their locations are always too far away, so it's nice to have a location now in the West San Jose / Saratoga neighborhood! The restaurant is airy and spacious, bright and beautiful! We were assisted by two district managers from Southern California here for the grand opening - Michael and Miguel. They were so nice! It was such a bonus to know that all their seafood is sustainable on their very extensive menu. Ordering was a little tricky on the kiosk - thankfully Miguel helped us along the way. We ordered the salmon/swai platter, shrimp tacos, and the sea bass platter. Also had the green beans as an appetizer. All were delicious! We enjoyed the Stubborn brand fountain drinks which have no artificial sweeteners, no artificial flavors nor HFCS, yay! We enjoyed our visit but realize there's always room for improvement so here are a couple trivial / tiny things I'll mention. 1- the pineapple cream soda was too diluted, so perhaps the proportion of syrup to carbonated water needs to be examined 2- the hibiscus iced tea (in the dispenser to the left of the fountain drinks) was tepid/warm. Definitely needed ice added. 3- there were no trash cans in the dining area! (We did see some outside in the patio dining area though.) Granted the wait staff was pretty efficient at cleaning up, but sometimes you just want to throw away something small, like a straw wrapper! I was invited to attend the soft opening and brought my parents along! Parking lot is squeezy and will probably get even more so once the neighboring new storefronts become occupied. CFG opened a new location at El Paseo De Saratoga. We've watched this location under construction for what seems like years so hearing it was finally opening was exciting! Especially with all the burger/chicken places bombarding the area, a casual, sustainable, healthier option is very welcomed. We arrived just before noon and were met by several staff who were friendly, patient and helpful as they walked us through their ordering process. I have to admit, I'm not a fan of ordering from a kiosk at all. However, they do have a register if that's your preference. We knew this was a soft opening and there would be hiccups but honestly, the process was pretty smooth with the exception of the fountain drinks. Those seemed flat and lacked flavor. I had the Pineapple Cream Soda and it tasted like lightly flavored water. No sweetness, no fizz but I'm sure it's just an adjustment that needs to be sorted out. No biggie. This location is smaller than the one off Cherry but has a great patio area to enjoy. Here's what we ordered: 2 PIECE FISH-n-CHIPS - fish was light and flaky and NOT GREASY at all! Came with perfectly seasoned fries and crispy kale slaw. FISH-n-SHRIMP PLATE - same fish as the fish-n-chips but also came with crispy shrimp that was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Paired with cauliflower rice which was just okay and grilled asparagus which was delicious!! BRUSSELS - this was a table favorite! So yummy! Grilled perfectly with a tasty balsamic glaze and fresh pico. CAJUAN SALMON SANDWICH - so this was my least favorite. There was way more bun than salmon and the wet sauce created a soggy bottom bun. The salmon itself didn't have a lot of flavor so the lemon slices helped brighten things up. The bun tasted okay and the lettuce was fresh and bright. It would be better if their filet was larger to make up for the size of the bun. It's probably not an item I'd order again. When I found out that there was a California Fish Grill near me, I was excited as I been wanting some affordable grilled fish in the area. The location has plenty of parking, and the interior is clean. You order on the self-order kiosk, and if you have questions, the staff can help. I usually get the grilled fish plates, which come it's one fish and two sides. I tried the salmon, tuna steak, sea bass, and tilapia and they are all good. The price is really fair and the fish is grilled perfectly. I especially love the salmon since it is so soft inside and has a light flavor. For the sides, I recommend getting the grilled zucchini as it's very fragrant and compliments the fish nicely. This place has become a frequent lunch spot of mine and I highly recommend it if you want some delicious fish! read more

I am new to this chain I ate it my first California Fish Grill yesterday in Daly city Today I was down near Saratoga and San Jose, seeing my chiropractor and shopping at an REI and Ulta. When I spotted the restaurant. Absolutely love the size of the portion and the affordability. It's hard to believe that people spend more at McDonald's on unhealthy food. Then you would on what you see in this photo. My only complaint is that you can't add extra chicken to any of the bowls it doesn't exist you can add shrimp but you can't add chicken. A staff member came over and worked the machine for about three minutes and he could not find a way to add chicken in any capacity His workaround was to have me order shrimp which I did and paid for and he gave me extra chicken. What I would suggest to the entire chain is you're missing out on money if people can't order extra protein besides the shrimp. Anyhow, the food is delicious read more

I got the salmon plate which includes a few sides. I was very disappointed in the portions for the Brussels sprouts. The cashier said that was the accurate size. Been to California Fish Grill before at one of their other San Jose locations and thought it was okay, never went back until now! I got their Shrimp Trio which featured their coconut shrimp, shrimp and giant shrimp. The coconut shrimp was a bit too buttery and had too much of a butter taste. The giant and grilled shrimp were both flavored well. I got this with rice and another side I can't remember. When we ordered the garlic bread it lacked a lot of flavor and was hard too. Everytime coming here it does feel like a fairly balanced and healthy meal but I think the flavor and portion is kind've just okay. It's just an average seafood place with no wow factor. This was my first time in this place. The menu featured fish and chips, which I tend to like, so I stepped up to the counter to order. There were no humans there to assist. It was all automated, with touchscreens. The UI was easy, so ordering was easy enough. But as an adult who understands the nature of germs, I'm not thrilled with the idea of poking a greasy screen before I sit down to eat with my dinner. So I didn't like that. Next, I was turned off by an on-screen invitation to tip! Tip who?! I just did all the work myself! I realize there are people in the kitchen cooking, but when everything is automated, and they text you your phone when the food is ready, and you have to stand up and get the food yourself, who the hell are you tipping, exactly? Especially since you're asking me to tip before I even take my first bite of food! This is a real turn off for me. It will cost them a star in this rating. So, the food... It came out quick. Was pretty blown away how fresh everything was and even for my daughter who is not a big fan of fish she loved it. The day after it's grand opening, my wife and I decided to experience the brand new California Fish Grill at 1200 El Paseo De Saratoga, Ste 100, San Jose, CA 95130 (where the former Mimi's was). This is a chain restaurant that was in a building built from the ground up, so everything was clean and new, especially the ADA restrioms (excellent grab bars). This restaurant is self serve with kiosks. They will take the order without a kiosk if you request it. No cash is accepted-only cards. A tip is also requested on the payment. When your order is ready, they call your name for the pick up. Now I do want to mention all the employees were polite, kind, and helpful. The restaurant has an excellent music system (Bose speakers seen) but it was playing really nice music so loud, I had trouble having a conversation with my wife (maybe I was sitting under a speaker). We ordered brussel sprouts (balsamic glaze), ahi tuna (no sauce), tilapia, brown rice, asparagus, diced zucchini (rosemary glaze), krispy rice dessert. The beverage bar was really excellent. All and all, everything was ok. My delicate stomach (for those who follow my reviews) did act up but I believe it was from the glazes they use and not the food. Some of the fish, such at swai and rockfish are not my first choice of a quality fish. I do like salmon and shrimp though. I asked for a refund they told me to wait for the manager, I waited 10 minutes for the manager that NEVER came out to speak to me instead they said I would get a refund in a couple of days, its been 1 month and i never received the refund. horrible service. read more

Normally we get great quality and correct orders from California Fish. We get take out there once a week. Last weekend all 3 bowls we ordered were wrong. Rice was undercooked on all. One missing sauce - one had the wrong protein. I called the store and was told to come in the next day or two with my receipt and they would remake them. Nothing would be farther from the truth. I got the 3rd degree from the gal at the counter - showed her my receipt - explained the situation. The manager at Cherry Ave store "Han" wouldn't even come out from the back. Seriously? Isn't that the managers role? So thanks for treating me so poorly. Unfortunately I will never go back. read more

This place is not good. I've been here a couple of times to give it a fair shake, but I'm never coming back again. I had the salmon the first time, and then I had a salmon wasabi bowl the second. Both were just ok/not great. They didn't even have the legally-required calorie and nutritional info for the bowls which was annoying. My parents had fish and chips. The fried cod had a ton of breading and was disgusting and oily. The fries were old/cold and were not fresh. Also way too salty. My parents are super easygoing and seldom complain and they didn't even finish this food. There are a zillion better places nearby. Pacific catch or any other place. This place is basically overpriced fast food that isn't fast. No thank you. read more

Good food, good service, and kid approved! I didn't know this place existed until they partnered with my children's school for a fundraiser. The place is clean and wasn't super busy early on a Tuesday evening. Ordering at the kiosk was easy, and the staff checked in with us to see if we needed any help. Food came out shortly after, and again the staff checked in with us multiple times to make sure everything was to our liking and if we needed anything. Wife and I got tacos, kids got fried chicken and fried fish. They didn't care for the fried fish but I think they're just picky, it tasted fine to me! read more
