This is the best sushi on the Westside hands down! I haven't been in a couple years, but I was in the area and stopped by for take out. It's a small hole in the wall on Santa Monica blvd with limited seating so I always get takeout. There's a couple tables outside which are good for summer LA nights. The staff are always pleasant and they have had the same cooks for years. I order the same thing everytime-salmon skin salad, Vizzy roll, and Greg's roll. They have a variety of rolls and dishes, but I love these so much that I've never wanted to try anything else although I'm sure they are just as delicious. A favorite sushi spot in Santa Monica - a true hidden gem. We didn't have reservations but there were open tables and we were seated immediately. Can I just say soooooo many great flavor combinations. The cucumber salad was sliced like spaghetti vs the traditional rounds. It was light and unexpected, delicious. Both rolls were unbelievable - the aburi salmon literally melts in your mouth. The baked one was also new to us and we loved it! The staff were helpful and extremely attentive. I am a sushi snob and have very high standards when it comes to my sushi. I travel all across LA for good sushi. So trust me when I say this place is excellent. The people who work there like Luna the hostess/waitress and antonio the chef are so lovely. The food is AMAZING. We bring new people to this place every single week, and without fail, every single person says every piece of sushi melts in their mouth and that they would (and do) come back again. Pros: This is my #1 favorite place to get aburi (seared) sushi. It is so tender and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I love that they have many kinds of aburi sushi, including salmon, salmon belly, albacore, ono, and hokkaido scallop. Whoa I think this is my new favorite sushi place in LA - it's just too bad it's so far from SGV or else I'd be here every weekend! We were literally at Izakaya Osen Silverlake the night before and all 4 of us agreed this was WAY better! Not that many restaurants we find makes sushi Aburi style which is seared with sauce and this place also tops with sliced onion which is what my hubby loves! I love salmon and they have THE best Salmon Belly Nigiri and Aburi Salmon. Best of all they also serve ONO! I fell in love with ONO many years ago in Hawaii and I actually gave up trying to look for it in LA. I got super excited when I saw it on the menu. The albacore belly is also amazing here.  For the quality of sushi here and with Aburi style the price is very reasonable. We will definitely drive out here using any excuse we have.  There's a small paid meter lot the back but there's also street parking. I was visiting my friend again for our kind of monthly get together so I usually get some churros from Churros Calientes a few blocks down. Since I didn't eat I decided to get some sushi from here. I for two rolls, the theta harmony and and the chupa cabre roll. The theta harmony was spicy tuna with avocado and fried tempura bits. I often judge sushi places by their spicy tuna and this place had a superb version. It was smooth and light and clean tasting that I expect from a Japanese style (as opposed to the often Korean style with a more forward spiciness and chunkiness). I believe this one came with a different sauce but it could be the other one. The chupa cabre roll was a yellowtail roll with some veg I think but that one was also light and clean tasting too. By clean I mean the fish did not taste too fishy as it can be sometimes. Overall I would eat here again if I wanted sushi around here, it's a solid option and quite a lot of roll options. Not absolutely every visit like I would for churros hence the 4 star rating. read more

Note I am not judging this place based on their food but customer service alone. So I came in after work for dinner, I did ask to use the restroom before I've got to order anything. The lady was about to tell me where the restroom was until an older woman cut her off and told her I had to order first in their language. I wouldn't have minded if she would have told me in a much more professional manner but she told me in an aggressive way quoting "the restroom is for customers only, if your not ordering you cannot use it". I told the woman that I was going to order so they proceeded to show me to the restroom. I did not think much of it until my friend that was on the phone told me how unprofessional that was. So when I finished using the bathroom I proceeded to tell the woman how it was a bit rude how she executed that situation and I was a bit uncomfortable. This woman then tells me "well thats how it is here". When I tell you this very much rubbed me the wrong way, I've worked in customer service myself and there is no way any customer deserves to that type of ignorant service. Let's be clear right up front...the ONLY reason I'm giving them 4 stars is because there's really no ambiance. Now, I refused to come here with my friend for years just because I didn't wanna go to a sushi restaurant that had the word "roll" or "factory" in it. I mean, it screams cheap awful & quantity, not quality. This is completely opposite my fave spot Sasabune which tells you up front that they do not serve California Rolls. They pride themselves on fresh fish. A restaurant name goes a long way. Still, there's no debating that everything I had here melted in my mouth. The way I judge a sushi restaurant is to order the top of the line fish and see how fresh it is without covering it in sauces and rolls, etc. So, that said, I finally agreed to go with my friend, and to prove him wrong, I ordered the Uni, Ankimo, Sweet Shrimp (with the fried heads of course), Hamachi, Toro, Ono (which is SUPER rare to find) and salmon, of course. I was blown away with every single tender, juicy and fresh fish I put in my mouth! My friend got his silly rolls and his cucumber salad and was perfectly happy being nowhere near my raw chunks of fish. Obviously, I thought this was a fluke and that I wasn't going to have the same experience another time. I've gone back twice more, and guess what...just as good!!! Please please, dim the lights and give it a more night-time cozy vibe and I'll gladly give you the 5th star & bring ALL my friends ALL the time! I've had takeout from California Roll Factory before, but I didn't remember it being so weak. Browsing the menu, I felt like even the specialty rolls were pretty basic. Tonight I tried the Some Like It Hot Roll, which was flavorful and spicy enough but lacked any semblance of texture and fell apart easily. I also tried the Piak's Jalapeño, which seemed like a cool concept and had some redeeming texture, but the taste was off...I distinctly did not enjoy it. The service was fine but my dine-in experience was not great. It's a very cramped space and it was super cold and drafty in the restaurant. I considered leaving as soon as I sat down, dress warm... I highly recommend walking 50 feet to either BAD Sushi or En Sushi and saving your money -- it wasn't exactly cheap (nearly $30 for two specialty rolls). BAD Sushi is priced similarly.
