My first dining at Camellia Cafe was fantastic! Great food, very nice ambiance and outstanding efficient attentive service. I ordered one of the daily specials, Shrimp PoorBoy with a cup of Gumbo. I'm glad I ordered, because it was the best Shrimp PoorBoy Sandwich & Gumbo I've had in a very long time. In fact , the Gumbo was much better & more flavorful than some of the gumbo I've had in some over priced , over rated Bourbon Street New Orleans restaurants. And I can probably say the same about the Shrimp PoorBoy Sandwich. Camellia Cafe's level of quality is incredible and I consider it a hidden gem. This is a family owned and run business which has been open for 22 years. They serve breakfast and lunch seven days a week from 7 AM to 2 PM. Lunch service starts at 11. Saturdays and Sundays there is a buffet service for breakfast from 7 to 11. You can still get omelettes or eggs cooked to order and try many various sides for the price of the buffet, which is a few dollars more than the cost of the omelette itself. The staff is very helpful and the service is excellent. The surroundings seem small, but they routinely have groups numbering in excess of 20 people which they handle easily. I recently moved to the Slidell area in April and ate there almost daily for the first two months. They have specials every day along with a few dozen choices for plate lunches, sandwiches, salads, soup, and appetizers. The breakfast menu is also very extensive. Your coffee order is supplemented with a carafe for refills. Try to save room for dessert or bring some home. Most of their pastries, biscuits and beignets are handmade. So I've been here twice now and I have to say both experiences were great! The breakfast is awesome! Nice thick and creamy grits and the pancakes are the real deal not frozen food! This is our new favorite breakfast spot. We tried this for the first time on Sunday and it exceeded all our expectations. From the outside it doesn't look like anything special, but the inside is decorate so cute. It's not a big place, so you may have to wait a few minutes for a table. The staff is great and you can tell they really hustle. They have a small breakfast buffet at a very reasonable price and everything looks really good. I had their Mediterranean omelet. It isn't normally what I would order, but I thought I would try something different and boy was I happy with it. They have a breakfast casserole with potations, onions and cheese that was really good too. Husband had your basic pancakes, bacon and sausage and was really happy with everything. Finally made it to this restaurant! We went on a Friday night and they had a seafood buffet that included 2 clusters of Dungeness Crab. The service from Dustin was great. He aas super friendly, more like he always knew you, and very attentive. We didn't try everything on the buffet, but we tried the boiled shrimp, which were a really nice size. The fried fish and shrimp were good. The pasta was good. I didn't really like the potato salad, it was sort of bland. The crab cakes were ok...thick but it seem to have more of a batter taste than crab taste. Gumbo was good, had an okra gumbo taste but I didn't see any okra. It was filled with crawfish and shrimp. Husband had the breakfast and I had the roast over bread. The roast was a deli roast and instant brown gravy. The mashed potatoes was an instant potatoes and they were runny. Food was cold. My husband had the breakfast. His biscuit was cold and hard the potatoes he said tasted funny, almost a sausages taste. I had a water to drink he had tea. Our bill was $50. I barely touched mine. I brought it home for my dog. He would not touch it. Had to go to the counter to ask for refills on our drinks and no they were not busy. New in town so I thought I would try this place. My wife and I decided to drop into this place, spontaneously on a Saturday afternoon and I am glad we did! I would certainly consider this place a hidden gem as it's inconspicuously tucked away off of Gause Blvd West. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the friendly and personable staff. We had our choice of table and were promptly served by Mannie. The ambiance of the entire joint was a subtle but strong tip of the hat to the Cajun/creole influence in NOLA and Slidell's cultures. They have daily specials which Mannie quickly sold us on. The portions were extremely generous, hot, fresh, and delicious! The establishment was well kept and clean and had generous in-door only seating but definitely would not recommend for a party of more than 12-18 without first coordinating ahead. Stopped in for early lunch and really really wanted some food with the New Orleans flavors! The restaurant is cute, welcoming and staff was attentive. Each table had a different painted and embellished design with a clear epoxy. I could have walked and enjoyed the art on the tables and been happy! So adorable! I give them 3 instead of 2 stars because staff was very nice, price of the food is reasonable and the portions were good but the Roast Beef poboy needs work. We ordered 2 Roast Beef poboys and a classic Cheeseburger with sweet potato fries. The bread on the poboy was not classic French bread so it was elastic-y and chewy. The roast beef had decent flavor but it had a lot of gristle, was not cooked enough to fall apart, was not shredded and was not sliced thin. Thus the chewy bread and gristle-y meat made it difficult to eat and the gravy was shiny and thick usually implying corn starch and too much of it. The cheeseburger was nothing impressive which is fine but it was way smaller than the bun. The sweet potatoes were good but not very much. I really don't recommend the Roast Beef. read more

How hard is it not to add cheese to a burger when asked to hold the cheese or make sure the tea was unsweetened when ordered.....? These are just preferences, but what if there had been an allergy or a medical issue prompting these requests.....? Why does it take over 40 minutes to make a burger & a sandwich, when there were few people seated & most were already eating....? My original choice for breakfast was closed this morning so on the way back home I passed by Camellia Cafe and decided to stop. I ordered 2 eggs, hashbrowns, sausage, and a biscuit for $6.49 or $6.99. A clever (not really) trick by a lot of restaurants is they set their options up to where if you want biscuits and gravy with your meal, you have to order the gravy À la carte so they can charge you more. This place is one of them. $1.49 for the gravy. The eggs and sausage were fine. You get a big serving of hasbrowns. No need to add salt. When looking at the biscuit I was stunned that it was served to me. It was hard and shriveled up. You could barely cut through it with a fork. The gravy had a very odd taste to it and not a good one. I can't explain what it taste like, but I couldn't eat much of it. I also was not able to identify the pieces of meat that were in it. They looked like sausage link slices, but were too big and did not look or taste like sausage. I really have no idea what it was. I love biscuits and gravy so this was a big disappointment and was a enough of a turn off to keep me from coming back. I don't like being served a hard biscuit that I can't even eat and the gravy is just gross. read more

Ok, I'm not understanding the near perfect rating for this place. I'm honestly baffled. This place is mediocre at best. I'm not really sure why people think this restaurant is the shiznit, but ummm, it's not. I've eaten here or four different occasions. Once by choice and the other three because I was outnumbered. I was underwhelmed every time. The service is always pretty good which is the only reason I gave it two stars instead of one. The problem with this restaurant is the food. It's subpar. I had a mufalatta once that was seriously on the skimpy side when it came to the meat and cheese but had oodles and oodles of olive salad mix. Ugh. I thought the sandwich was supposed to be made the other way around. I ordered onion rings once and while nice and thinly sliced like I prefer them, they were drenched in grease. So much that I couldn't eat them. I know what you're thinking...they're onions fried in oil so sure they'll be greasy. But it seemed as though they were taken straight out of the frying pan and piled on a plate. Aren't you supposed to put those puppies in a drip basket to drain a bit before you serve them? I recently had a conversation with a friend about this place and we were discussing how the food here tastes like cafeteria food. He put it perfectly when he said, "nothing tastes fresh. I bet they don't even crack their own eggs. The probably order them and have them shipped already cracked in a plastic bag." Seems like that could be true to me. Really and truly disgusting. This place needs to have a visit from Gordon Ramsey. We had take out from here last night which cost about $50. We had jalapeño poppers, chicken wings, spring rolls and gumbo. The chicken wings were falling apart and not in a good way. Greasy and tasteless. The jalapeño poppers were undercooked and the oil they use must need replacing as everything fried tasted like dirty oil. The spring rolls were so terrible that I started gagging when I put it in my mouth. The gumbo seemed to be ok until you got to the bottom and then it was flemy. Even writing about this good makes me feel ill. I don't want to know what the kitchen looks like. It was a waste of my $50 and if i had been dining in I would not have paid.
