Camino Real Mexican Restaurant is located in the Indian Square Shopping Center. This is just past the intersection with Kempsville Rd. I have visited this business several times now, and my most recent visit was on February 14, 2026. When coming to this place, if you are coming from Ferrell Pkwy, you'll need to go straight through the traffic light at Kempsville Rd. You'll need to make a U-turn at the U-turn traffic light just past that intersection. There is an ice cream shop in front of the building close to entering. The first visit here (December 31, 2025) was unplanned, as I was planning to go to another place nearby as I had a birthday offer that I needed to use before the end of the month, but they were so packed I gave up and that is what landed my mom and I here at Camino Real instead. Pulling up, it wasn't hard to find the place, and it wasn't overly busy either. There was plenty of parking available. When you come up to the entrance, there is an outdoor seating area (not open for the time of year on these visits). Once you come inside, you will see their bar area and a host/hostess stand to check in to be seated. The overall ambiance and vibe I felt coming in was a casual but a bit more upscale. My mom and I were seated in the main dining area of the restaurant. It didn't take long for someone to bring out the chips, salsa, and white sauce. Our server was quick to come over and ask what we wanted to drink and to let him know if we had any questions about the menu. The drinks came pretty quick, but we weren't sure yet on the entrees. However, we did order the Carne Con Queso appetizer. After the appetizer came out, we were finally ready to order the entrees. My mom decided on the Fajita Taco Salad with ground beef instead of steak. I decided to go with the Burrito Cali with Chicken, but without the rice. About ten minutes or so later, the food came to the table, and it was good timing as we had just finished the appetizer. Both entrees were hot, so it took a moment to start off with them. The Burrito Cali had a great mix of complementing flavors. The burrito may have looked small, but it was much bigger than expected. It was quite an indulgence for me, and it was so good. My mom loved the Fajita Taco Salad, which was also quite flavorful. She told me this was one of the best versions of a Fajita Taco Salad she has had. Given the experience on the first visit, we came back for a second visit on February 14, 2026. On this visit, seating and such was very similar to the first visit, including the chips, salsa and white sauce. This time though, the appetizer ordered was the Fresh Guacamole Azteca (without jalapeños). It took a few moments for that to come to the table, but that was expected as it was made fresh to order. That guacamole was amazing. It had a great flavor to it, and it was a good size too. This will continue to be an option to choose from for me in the future. When it came to entrees this time, I ordered the Burrito Chipotle with grilled chicken this time. My mom got the Quesadilla Fajita entree with steak. Just like the prior visit, it took about ten minutes or so after ordering for the food to come out. They came out hot once again. The Burrito Chipotle was different from the one I had at the first visit, but this one was just as good, and it had a nice kick to it as well, which I would expect for that. The ingredients complemented each other well in that burrito. My mom liked the Quesadilla Fajita as well, though she said she really liked the Fajita Taco Salad she had the first time better, so I can see her getting the Fajita Taco Salad on a future visit. Overall, both visits here to this point have been great. We have plans to come back here in the future to try other items available. Service was on point in both visits, and they came around often to check on us. I don't remember by how much, but there is a service charge if you use a card instead of cash to pay. I would definitely call this place an experience, and you should try them out and experience it as well. read more

Sister and I were out on some last minute errands before Christmas. We were both starving and she wanted Mexican, so we went to the closest spot, which happened to be right across from the Kemps River Shops. This place turned out pretty average - decent Mexican provisions, but unfortunately, the service was next to non-existent, despite there being only 2 other tables being served in the restaurant. This left our experience pretty lacking. The layout is a little confusing, as you walk in and find yourself in a completely separate room from the dining area. It's a carpeted room with a bar and a couple small tables. We were quickly taken down a hallway into the main area, with lots of booths and tables and themed decor. We were seated in a booth and brought chips with salsa and white sauce (albeit a pretty minuscule amount), both yummy. We ordered a bean dip, her a Pollo Fundido, and me a shrimp quesadilla with extra sour cream on the side. The bean dip was brought out first, and it was hot and cheesy, with a little bit of spice. It was pretty good. Unfortunately, though, when we were given our entrees, our server never came back - so we never got more chips, white sauce, drink refills, or when I discovered I didn't get extra sour cream, I wasn't able to get that, either. The servings were pretty small. No complaints about the taste, though. My sister liked her fried chicken burrito. It was pretty tiny, though. And for me, it was the first time I have seen tomatoes IN a quesadilla, but it tasted good. I'm pretty picky about having sour cream with my Mexican food, so it sucked only having one dollop for my whole plate. If the service was more present here, I would have been a lot happier. The workers seemed more interested in chatting with each other, even though we were one of the only tables being dined at in the restaurant. I have heard that the place is not as trendy or vibrant but that the food speaks for itself. I Met up with a friend. I already had dinner so I Just ordered a virgin pina colada. First it looked and tasted more like a mango smoothie with horchata rather than a pina colada. The color was off and there was more milk taste than coconut. My friend ordered what seemed to be a carnitas enchilada. It looked greasy you can see the surface reflecting the ceiling lights. The carnitas looked bland. The cheese sauce looked more like mayonnaise than cheese sauce. Update: my friend got home and had food poisoning, indicated won't come back. I'm fairly certain this place has been in this location for a very, very long time and I am ashamed to say I just went in for the first time this week. I am incredibly thankful that a couple of friends thought to invite us out! We stopped in on Saturday night @ 6pm. The entrance is tucked away - we actually walked through a patio in the parking lot. There is ample parking in the shopping center, behind the Brusters off Indian River Road. It's not directly accessible traveling west so you'll have to make a u-turn. We entered into a bar area and were greeted and seated right away in a section of the restaurant that makes you forget the odd entryway - the huge skylight offered lots of natural light which, I think, made our dining experience even more pleasant. That, and we had a babysitter! Chips, salsa and white sauce and beers quickly delivered. They have Dos Equis Amber. A plus! Our server was excellent throughout the meal - quick with refills and checking in. What blew both me and hubs away was the prices! For the HUGE, delicious portions, they're notably cheaper than other local Mexican joints. And the food is phenomenal! I tried the vegetarian fajitas with corn tortillas and had 2 meals leftover. It's funny how I grew up in the area but never had the opportunity to visit Camino Real. For my first visit and in the interest of time, we made an order to go. The guys at the front were pretty cheerful and funny (even though the restaurant was about to finish kitchen service). I order the three taco platter and went with - al pastor, tuna, and carne asada tacos. With the exception of the tuna taco, all of the tacos were pretty amazing. If you have to choose one taco from this place definitely go with the al pastor. I have to say that it was one of the best tacos I have eaten in a very long time. I think the tuna taco would have had great promise, but it was overcooked, which made it really chewy. Overall, I'm glad that I took a chance with Camino Real and hope to return in the near future. read more

Some places it seems to be too thin, but here it was nice and thick. My son had the kid's chicken tender meal and pretty much ate it all. My husband had the Steak and Chicken Burrito and loved it. I just had the mild Buffalo wings and thought they were pretty good. Before leaving I went to the restroom and noticed an odd hole in the ceiling directly over the stall. This used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant however of late the Mexican hamburger beef just has no flavor. I don't understand how it could have no flavor, but I've noticed most Mexican. I have my go-to tried and true Mexican spots closer to where I live in Norfolk so I will naturally compare those places to any other spot I try. Overall, they check the boxes when it comes to most things but not everything. Have not been here in awhile. I met a girlfriend here for dinner. The parking lot is small and can be a difficult location to get into during rush hour traffic. It sits behind Bruster's on Indian River Rd. Chips were fresh, salsa was alright. We also ordered a side of bean dip which was also mediocre. My friend ordered a margarita and at first she felt that she could not taste any of the liquor in it. She mentioned it to the waiter but he assured her that it had a good amount of liquor in it and stated that it was mixed and made by the owner of the restaurant. He offered her another shot of tequila but she declined. After she was halfway through drinking the margarita she acknowledged that she could taste the liquor a bit more lol. Then the waiter came out with a shot of tequila anyway- obviously on the house which was nice. Our table was super wobbly which was annoying. I ordered a beef taco salad -it was ok. My friend ordered the Pollo mazatlan. She said it was good. Neither one of us were extra excited about the food. Overall the service was good. I've seen this place many times, and finally took a chance. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was National Margarita Day on the day of our visit! I did indulge in a margarita on the rocks, and they are $1 off during happy hour. It was delicious (and STRONG!) The servers were very attentive, and the food came very quickly. I had the fajita taco salad which had great flavor with the grilled veggies and meat. I was a bit disappointed that their ceviche was served hot, and it didn't have much acidity. Holy cow, Stop the presses... Let me add to the growing list of folks who stated "This is the single best Mexican Restaurant in Hampton Roads"! To begin, the location is just out of easy eyesight from Ferrell Parkway. I have driven Ferrell parkway hundreds of times and never actually noticed the place, so thank you to YELP for letting me discover them. Atmosphere: We came in on a Friday night, and it was quite busy. Very spacious restaurant, and I like the colorful tables and the high-back booths. Gives some additional privacy, and I like that. Food: Everything we ordered was terrific! The Guacamole, the combination platter that I had (which was served on 2 diff. platters) was awesome. My wife ordered Chimichangas, which were superb as well (pictured). Great presentation and all of it tasted absolutely wonderful. Service + Price: Waiter was on-point with the refills, food was served quickly, and very affordably priced as well. ---I've been to many Mexican restaurants in the area... I have been by here so many times, and never ate there. What I have been missing! This place is huge and clean. They have these awesome carved wooden benches with tropical animals painted on them. The front door is a bit odd to find since it's through the front porch area, where you can also eat. I was happy with my food, it was definitely freshly prepared. Everyone's food was fresh. The presentation was a little bleh. All the Mexican places seem to be switching to those giant, heavy, square plates. Been there, seen it. Our waiter was awesome and everything was served quickly. This is my new favorite Mexican Restaurant! The establishment is very clean on the outside and on the inside! We were seated immediately and given chips and salsa . The menu's are extensive and fresh, with very reasonable prices! (Also-big plus- their sour mix is homemade! No gross aftertaste of commercial products! ) . I ordered the Blackberry Basil Margarita and my guest ordered a soft drink. The decor is so pretty. There was definitely a lot of heart put into this place. The tables are covered with linen and a sheet of paper. After we recieved drinks we ordered the Lunch Special #6 & #11. The Margarita was perfectly balanced with fresh blackberries muddled in the bottom . I actually received the wrong food order, but started to eat it anyways. The problem was corrected, and I took the other plate home for lunch tomorrow! The plate I got was two beef enchiladas with red sauce and cheese and it was delicious! The original order was for a cheese quesadilla and cheese enchilada. My guest had a Quesadilla Suprema which was a loaded quesadilla with chicken, cheese, and veggies, to which he said was very good! A real Mexican Food!!! My daughter took me to this place and I loved it, we got the Molcajete... so DELICIOUS!!!!

When we lived in College Park back in the day, this was our go-to Mexican spot. We hadn't dined here in so long; I want to say the last time was probably 5 years ago. Back then I would have given almost 4 stars. After today, I would have to give Camino Real 2 stars. The food was just mediocre. Presentation was pretty though. (See pic.) I had the fried chimichanga dinner - 2 chimichangas, beans, rice, & salad topped with sour cream. I chose one (shredded) beef & one chicken. I know that since they are topped with cheese, they would get a bit soggy and can't retain the crispness from being fried, but normally the ones I've had before are semi crispy still, especially the the edges. These came out and were just so soggy. The beans were ok. My mom's Chicken dish was so-so. My dad didn't love the burritos he ordered. Not the worst Mexican food I've ever had, but definitely not the best. read more

We eat here frequently. The employees are very nice, courteous, and efficient. We have never had to wait for seating and a server is always promptly at your table to take your drink order and bring you complimentary chips with delicious salsa and white sauce. Once they take your order, you don't have to wait long for fresh and hot food. My husband is a native of Southern California and really enjoys the food here. He doesn't have any complaints about the food. The portions are generally more than you can eat and a doggy bag is needed unless you split a dish with someone. What's more is that the prices are very reasonable. I have never left feeling like I didn't get my money's worth. Writing this review is making me hungry for their food! read more

Best Mexican food in Hampton Roads. We have been coming here for over 12 years. The staff is incredibly friendly. The fresh guacamole is the best in Hampton Roads and they have a unique way of preparing it and every time we bring friends they rave about it. If you are on a date, the Molcajete is fantastic! It's a blend of chicken, steak, shrimp, and chorizo cooked in a large cast iron bowl with peppers, onions, and pineapple for a nice sweetness. Also, they don't skimp on the tequila in the margaritas and don't use deceptive glasses that give the illusion of a larger drink.
