Scout also known as Scoutski and Diddles...
    Sue N.

We have been coming to Canal Vet for a while with all of our dogs. Today was the hardest day for our family. We had to put or 14 year old German Shepherd down. When I inquired about the process, Kristine was very helpful and called me a few times with details and what to expect. She also had to listen to me cry and was very empathetic. We had no idea what to expect and watched and heard a few stories of how animals were put to rest. My husband, daughter and son in law attended this sad occasion with us. Before the appointment, we stopped next door at Star Bucks where the gal who took my order gave me a LARGE pup cup for Scout for free... at that point I started crying. The local high school was out so a bunch of teenagers witnessed us bawling while our dog devoured his whip cream like the good boy he was. At the front desk, Julie graciously let us know they were ready but we weren't ready to let go yet and had 10 minutes before our appointment and she was very understanding. Once we had to go into the room, Kristine explained the process to us and took Scout back to sedate him to make him comfortable and eventually go into a light sleep. Scout in true fashion, left them a poopy in the back room. When she brought him back to us, we got to spend time with him until he started to slump over. My husband laid him on the bed to rest. Dr. Larson came in and explained he would be giving Scout his final shot and a few signs to look for. He also spoke with us about how lucky Scout was to have us and vice versa. He asked if we wanted a prayer and we did... We love all of our dogs but Scout was my dog and sometimes we saw Dr Larson when he rode his bike on our daily walks. Once the doctor injected the final shot into Scouts catheter he took his last breath and passed. We were given time to say goodbye and they will be cremating him and giving him back to us in an urn they let me pick as a courtesy gift. I have never had a dog put down, usually they passed on their own. I can't recommend Canal Vet more if you have an elderly, sick or injured animal that needs to be put down. Thank you to all the staff for their kindness today...

Although i have only been going to Canal Vet for a couple months with my best friend Cash to be treated for chronic stomach and bowel issues that he had his whole life. Dr Heather was very kind and very helpful when treating Cash. I just wish we wouldve found Dr Heather sooner she would quite possibly have given me more time with my boy. Unfortunately Cash didnt respond to treatment due to how advanced and aggravated his condition had progressed. When a day comes where i get another best friend i guarantee that if Dr Heather and the wonderful caring staff at Canal Vet will have us as a patient i couldnt ask for anything more comforting to know how good we will be treated

Around 8pm on march 21st my cat started having trouble breathing and she started convulsing. She wasn't breathing until my brother would shake her to start breathing again. We rushed her to this emergency clinic but she sadly passed away in my brothers arms in the car just two minutes from the clinic. The team was fantastic. One of the members there who took my cat to the back let us stay there for as long as I needed and didn't judge me for crying loudly. My mother paid $600 in total for my beloved cat to be cremated and to have a clay print of her paws which in my opinion is a great price. About a week(ish) later we got to pick up her ashes and the clay print we were promised and I believe the team went above and beyond. I received a card with the team's signatures and a certificate of cremation.

I am extremely disappointed with the care my mother's dog received at this clinic…read more We brought her in because she was actively vomiting, suffering from diarrhea, and unable to keep down food or water. Despite being fully aware of her condition, the clinic sent her home with oral medications that she was unable to keep down. No IV fluids were provided, and her condition worsened significantly the following day, forcing us to seek care elsewhere. To make matters worse, we later learned that the dosage of medication she was sent home with appeared inappropriate for her small size. As pet owners, we trusted that the medications and dosages being prescribed were safe and appropriate. Learning that there were concerns about the dosage only added to our worry and frustration. What is most frustrating is the lack of communication and accountability. We were under the impression that certain treatments had been provided, only to later discover discrepancies in what was actually administered. We have also been told after the fact that hospitalization was recommended, but that was never clearly communicated to my mother during the visit. Had she been properly informed that her dog's condition was serious enough to require hospitalization, she would have taken immediate action. When we sought a second opinion, we were advised that injectable anti-nausea medication, antibiotics, and supportive care should have been considered given the symptoms our dog was experiencing. Instead, she was sent home with oral medication despite being unable to keep anything down. We attempted to resolve our concerns directly and professionally with the clinic before sharing our experience publicly. Unfortunately, rather than acknowledging our concerns, our request for a refund was denied. Pet owners trust veterinary clinics during some of the most stressful moments imaginable. We expected compassionate care, clear communication, and appropriate treatment. Instead, we were left with a much sicker dog, significant emotional distress, and additional veterinary expenses to address issues that we believe should have been handled appropriately from the beginning. I encourage anyone considering this clinic to ask detailed questions, request copies of all treatment records, and carefully review the care plan and medications being recommended for their pet.

For the first dog, I was called right before surgery and told her heart rate was a concern and they would not proceed unless I paid for additional testing or signed a high-risk waiver. I then took her to another vet who said she was healthy and cleared for surgery. For the second dog, I again received a call right before surgery saying there was another issue, this time about retained baby teeth, and that the staff member who handles that was unavailable. I was told the recommended option was to take her elsewhere so she would not need anesthesia twice. I followed that medical advice and took her home. No surgeries were performed on either dog. Despite this, the clinic refused to refund my deposits and blamed me for "not following through with services." I understand that medical concerns can come up, but being notified at the last minute twice, having no procedures done, and then being told my money will be kept is unacceptable. This does not feel ethical or fair, and it is not how a professional veterinary clinic should treat clients who are trying to do the right thing for their pets. I would strongly caution other pet owners to ask detailed questions about their deposit and refund policies before booking, and to be prepared for last-minute changes that may still cost you money.
