The Retreat at Balcones Springs - Macaw imprisoned in tiny cage

    The Retreat at Balcones Springs

We were genuinely excited about the possibility of having our wedding at The Retreat. The setting…read moreis beautiful, and at first glance, it seemed like a great fit. Unfortunately, the experience ended up being incredibly frustrating and disappointing. We had a simple but important request: to have outside kosher food for a small number of guests who keep strict dietary laws. We weren't asking to forgo their catering--just to bring in meals to accommodate religious needs. The venue refused outright, claiming "insurance restrictions," yet they offered no explanation of those restrictions, and no willingness to explore reasonable workarounds like guest waivers, additional insurance, or even discussing the options the caterer presented like naming them on their own insurance. We felt like we presented many creative and reasonable solutions that absolved them of liability and there was no legitimate reason to not move forward. Worse, we were consistently treated like an inconvenience. Messages and emails were ignored for days or weeks at a time--if they responded at all. We were never given the sense that they valued us as potential clients or were interested in helping us create a meaningful, inclusive event. This experience left us feeling dismissed and disrespected. If you're planning a wedding with any religious, cultural, or dietary considerations--or if you just expect professionalism and responsiveness--this may not be the right venue for you.

The bird has bouts of anger (can you blame it? It has been in a very small space for many years by itself) and looks very unhappy. For a place that cares so much about being in close contact with nature, keeping a majestic animal like a Scarlet Macaw in such condition is disappointing to say the least.

This place keeps flood lights on all night that light up the entire area...which is supposed to be…read morea 'dark sky' region of the state. This disturbs literally hundreds of people that live across the lake. Management has been contacted yet they don't seem to care and they have been doing this for years. While we appreciate they need lighting for safety and activities what they're doing is incredibly inconsiderate. There are multiple ways to shield and contain a lot of this light but when contacted you get the "We're a Christian camp...." rhetoric. Not very Christian of them to disturb hundreds of neighbors and make no effort to be considerate. One has to wonder how they treat their campers if this is their attitude towards neighbors.

Y'all, please tell me how as a camp you feel it is ok to bunk 30 girls in a building with 2 (TWO)…read morestalls and 2 (TWO) showers. How is this acceptable, especially with the amount of money parents and churches pay to send their kids. This is just unacceptable and crazy to think about. The boys are not any better at 60 boys in a bunkhouse with no working water, but at least they can make do (because that's what you want your children to take away from camp) the glaring fact that the camp is more concerned with how much money they can generate and not how well to (even mildly) accommodate the children. 30 girls, 2 showers.. at 4 minutes a shower, that's 1 hour MINIMUM (and that's turnstile showering, which teens won't do) to get the girls out the door for the day. Realistically that's 2 hours just for bathroom time. CRAZY! Enjoy the profits! We'll generate the Praise.

I wish that I could give less than 1 star here…read more I used to serve at the same church as this man and we had a pretty deCent relationship up until he started to post some very hateful and homophobic things on his Facebook page specifically targeting the gay community, like myself, completely unprovoked. JD has posted these things not only to communicate his personal thoughts but also to simply cause and stir a ruckus within the community for entertainment. I'm disgusted by his behavior, saddened by his lack of sympathy/empathy for my community, and simply do not tolerate his actions. I would not want my children around someone like this EVER. The demoralizing energy he's given off, is not of God. The hateful spite is not of the divine. The trolling demeanor is not nice. And moreover, I wouldn't trust my money or time with him. I highly suggest going elsewhere. Have a blessed day Attached are a few photos of his heinous posts. Do you want someone like this entertaining you?
