Canlon's is a restaurant that I would recommend to anybody. The food is great. The owner even won a cooking TV show called "Chopped." The desserts are good and the restaurant is family friendly. I would recommend the "Brownie Sundae." The staff and bar are great. The only problem is that not everything is good. Opinions vary. If you stick to basic foods like soup, salad, steak, and soft shell crabs then you'll be fine. I visit Canlon's at least three times a month and I always enjoy my meal. read more

Went to Canlon because we are going to be catering a house party and wanted to try their food. We ordered an appetizer of eggplant rollatini - absolutely delicious! I loved that I could taste all the ingredients: the red sauce we was fresh and tasty, the cheese was sweet and creamy and the Eggplant was earthy. Next came a dinner salad. Blech! Looked like someone reached into a bag of mixed lettuces and just dumped it on the plate. No cucumber, no tomatoes, Nothing else but lettuces and the tiny bits of color from shredded carrot and radicchio. Their ranch dressing was completely tasteless. One less star because of this very cheap and disappointing element. Our main course was the chicken aubergine. OMG SOOOOOO yummy!! Again- fresh delicious ingredients and a really nice sized portion. We had a side of penne with meat sauce and it also came with some seasonal squash. The squash didn't really go as a side veggie, I would have preferred something green but it was tasty. The penne with meat sauce was amazing. It was so much meat and not very much red sauce and I was really impressed. One less star for the following- everything we asked for, like onions for the salad, grated cheese, the main course that we shared and the appetizer that we shared, nothing came with any serving utensils. As if the server was a complete novice. Other than that the service was great and the time between courses was also perfect for us. Oh, the house red wine was nothing to shout about either. Just had lunch in Canlon's with 3 friends. It was our first time there and it was a very satisfying experience. Lunch offerings were varied, the servings plentiful, food excellent, service more than friendly and the prices surprisingly low. On a bright Saturday Afternoon with my husband about to catch up with some college friends in Oakwood Heights, Staten Island, we stopped by Canlon's Restaurant for a quick grub. Renowned and recommended by the locals, our expectations were high and did not disappoint. I had a classic Pastrami Reuben and my husband had a cheeseburger. I loved my Reuben (lean just how I asked). It was rich, delicious, and had a perfect balance with the sauerkraut and Russian dressing. Also, the fries were fresh and hot and you can tell didn't come from a frozen bag. My husband enjoyed his burger saying it was very "fresh" and "filling" (his words not mine...). This place has been around for at least 25 years. I've always passed by but never walked in. Since the first time I dined here, I've been back several times and even three a couple of parties on the lower level. The owner is wonderful and always stops by to make sure your food is good. The chicken parmigiana was wonderful and it has a family atmosphere where you feel welcome, just like Cheers. I recommend this place if you want a nice home cooked meal and a pleasant experience. read more

Okay lets be serious, no one actually likes this place do they? The good reviews are quite obviously friends or family members because the food here is just plain repulsive. Went there with the family today for Easter and i wish there was an option to give this place zero stars. Had the shrimp cocktail appetizer which was the quality of the shrimp rings you buy at the supermarket. Those actually might be better. Then i had the Mushroom Barley soup which tasted like Campbell's from a can. Absolutely none of the food was fresh in any way, shape or form. As an entree i had the Chateaubriand with vegetables and potatoes. HORRIBLE is an understatement. The meat was dry as dry can possibly be with a gooey, gluey like "gravy" on top that almost tasted like chocolate pudding. Totally bizarre. The potatoes were dry, not fresh and also had a bizarre sweet flavor. Vegetables were mediocre at best. Where they get off charging $35 for that plate of school cafeteria food boggles my mind. Fountain soda was flat as well. Plate of dessert was Entenmans brownies with cool whip and some sort of cherry parfait that looked like they saved it from last Easter. Waitresses seem inexperienced. Stay away from this place if you have any respect for your tastebuds. read more

I have been here a few times,Me and my gf went to try pre fix i dont see the drastic prefix when 2 meals are still costin 30 plus + sangria,my gf had the yankee pot roast and has had better out of perkins. I had the beef wellington (Filet mignon)( NOT),I ordered medium it came out well and like i was chewing a chew toy.I have had wellington a few times but never this dissaopointed,and after I complained about how bad it tastes the waiter never came back to the table but i guess after he highly recommended it i guess he was embarressed,so someone else took over our table.i then asked fore filet of sole wich was good,but they never appologized or offered anything to componsate for the dissapointment. After seeing the owner on the Food Network's "Chopped" show, I went here with some family that live in SI, and we have gone back a few times now. It's a nice neighborhood place, and the owner walks around frequently to greet everyone. The menu is huge and has anything you could ever imagine, with lots of daily specials. It also seems like you could order something not listed on the menu! It's definitely a great place for comfort foods, especially the pot roast. First of all I would like to say that the owner of this restaurant always makes his customers feel like family. He comes out of the kitcken and says hello and asks if he can do anything to make your meal more enjoyable. I have been eating here for years and the food never let me down. I had my mom's 75th bday lunch there and it was great. You get alot of food! It was delicious. Potato or black bean Soup, salad and meal! The ranch dressing was especially good. Eggplant rollatini appetizer was my favorite and the irish soda bread is yummy. The service was awesome and they made her a huge brownie sundae with candles. She was thrilled. Eddie gave her a lottery ticket and dropped by the check on us which was a nice touch. I had dinner at Canon's Restaurant with my family, five of us adults and my 4 month old daughter and I just have to say that the dinner was fantastic! I had ordered the shrimp wellington which I was a little nervous about ordering since I had never had it before. The shrimp wellington comes with a base of lobster bisque in a deep orange color. On top of that there is phyllo dough stuffed with large shrimp and crab meat baked until its golden brown. I have never tasted something so surprisingly light and decadent. I am a huge shrimp and crab fan and this is one of the best dishes I have ever had. My mom and sister had the turkey dinner sandwich and my dad and boyfriend had the pigsty which were both very good. Not only was the food amazing but the staff was very accommodating for my daughter. They provided a highchair for me to put her car seat on and I was able to have her sit right between my boyfriend and I while we ate dinner. My mom lives in Staten Island and I will definitely be back to visit again for the shrimp wellington! I send a great job to the chef and to keep up the good work! read more

I was a bit disappointed with my experience here but I also can't say it was horrible. I enjoyed that when ordering an entree that you are given a soup, salad and desert with it. This allowed me to feel like I was given my money's worth. I got the onion soup, it was ok. Not mind blowing. The salad was a salad. My entree however was where my disappointment came in. I ordered the seafood combo Francesc style, and was given a big plate of mush. The presentation alone was enough to turn me off. The egg was just kind of thrown on top and was a bit tough. The sauce looked like boogers just poured over everything. When I ordered I expected the title to mean a plate of different seafood, what I was given was one shrimp which was pretty good but should have been more, 3 scallops which were undercooked and fishy. The filet of sole was nice and was pretty good. The sauce could use some work. The pasta was good and so was the tomato sauce on it. Best part of the meal was the cheesecake, it was awesome. The service was good, the place was pretty empty except for the rowdy bunch at the bar, if your looking for quiet fine dining I don't think this is your place, if your looking for a decent filling meal for a good price then I'd say give it a try. Overall good experience but I don't think I will be going back anytime soon. read more
