A Masterclass in How Not to Run a Restaurant Let me save you the 3+ hours I lost last night. Arrived through the front entrance on Cinco de Mayo and waited 45 minutes inside while staff walked past us repeatedly without a single acknowledgment. No one greeted us. No direction. Just invisible. After I finally asked a server, she pointed us outside to what looked like lawn chairs and a random podium -- no signage, no banner, nothing indicating it was a host stand. We weren't alone in the confusion. Another group of men stood there just as lost, and only when they asked were we all told to queue. Quote time: 1 hour 20 for patio, 1 hour for indoor. We said first available and waited at the bar -- only to be told we were at the wrong end of the bar. The "right" bartenders? Completely ignored us. An hour later, we get the text. Walk up. Two women behind us also get their text. They're walked to patio seating. We're walked to a dim corner two-seater. I asked about outside -- the host literally wiped the table and said "this is what we got." Because I said "first available," apparently that meant least desirable. Then we sat. For almost an hour. No water. No drink order. Nothing. My phone died waiting. I had to leave to refill a parking meter. I asked for a manager. She arrived -- hands on hips, swaying, visibly unbothered. She threw $23 off a bill I never asked to be fixed. I didn't want a discount. I wanted dignity and basic service. The food? Actually good. But here's what I couldn't unsee: not one Mexican person on the floor. Not one host, server, bartender, or busser. Every single Mexican worker was in the back -- in the kitchen, invisible, making minimum wage -- while the front of house celebrated Cinco de Mayo as a cash grab. That's not a coincidence. Went on a Sunday, very busy. Had to wait a bit to be seated. Very, very loud. Was in a group of 5 and could only really talk to the person next to me bc I couldn't hear anyone else. This place is more bar, less restaurant. Very dark. Food was good. I had the Baja fish tacos. My group was happy with their food. Service was fast but hard to understand the server, especially with how loud it was. This was such a cute fun find while looking at holiday lights around E. Passyunk and13th. There was protein options for everyone and even meat-free me could pick from seitan or mushrooms which was a welcome surprise in a Mexican restaurant. I had their seitan and mushroom burrito yum. Went to this Mexican restaurant on the edge of Passyunk. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Since the outside was so nice, we decided to do outdoor dining. I ended up getting a coffee and Churro French toast. The wait was incredibly long. We must have waited like 2 hours to get our food. Other people got their meals before us even when they came after us. The waitress even like discounted our drinks because of the wait. I finally got my Churro French toast. There was cinnamon sugar brioche. It also came with berries and hot chocolate sauce. It was pretty unique without the traditional bread. Cute restaurant with outdoor seating and we opted for the outdoor patio to enjoy the last of the unseasonably warm weather. They do have Patio heaters. Food was wonderful and fresh with huge portion sizes and to say we went home with leftovers was an understatement. Shawn was an added bonus to an already great night -- Super attentive, best service ever! For sure visiting any night Shawn is bartending Monday through Wednesday. I've been here plenty of times and can't say that I've ever had a bad experience or terrible food. Today, I got the mushroom fajitas, and me and my friends shared some chips and guacamole and queso. Guacamole was yummy, the queso not so much to my liking but not too bad, just not for me (something was missing). Food was amazing, location is amazing, I love the build of the actual restaurant inside and out. Was a busy day so I will look past the rushed food runners which is okay sometimes. The only thing is that the seats outside are not good seats. The armrest is a slim cylinder making it so if your arm isnt perfectly balanced, it's going to slip off. It only annoyed me a little. The thing I really like about it is it's so diverse from the employees to the clientele. I just had an overall great experience! The first time I went with a friend, we ordered a lot of food. I got birria tacos and he got enchiladas. Everything was absolutely delicious. We got a side of the chips, guac and two types of salsa. And when I tell you it felt like the chips were never ending it absolutely did. We also opted to get the margarita pitcher, which converted to maybe about six margaritas for us, which was definitely worth the price. We didn't try any appetizers, but they did look really good. Chicken Enchiladas were fantastic! We got chips and guac to split for $5 - guac was very good. The margaritas are made well. Altogether solid food. They have a lot of vegan options that look good - one in particular was a potato enchilada. There's a lot of indoor space. On a Thursday night, there were a bunch of open tables so we had a small section to ourselves with no reservation. Looks like they have an outdoor area in the spring/summer. At night, they lower the lights so it's dim. There is a bar area sectioned off on one half of the restaurant. Couple TVs playing the sixers game but they don't blast the volume. Goat taco could have been better and could have been executed better. Chunky and not fork tender. Had to pull it apart to eat. Lacked spices and flavor. Was hoping for something closer to south Philly barbacoa but did not even come close. Steak burrito was ok and wish the meat did not have bit that I had to pick out of my mouth and put in a napkin. Chicken Taquito was ok. Nachos were soggy and smothered with sour cream/crema. Very forgettable. Pickled jalapeños could have been better but the fresh jalapeños you can request were good. Wish they were cut thinner but that's ok. Gave the food a nice crunch. My friends liked the hot dog with a thinly wrapped bacon. Had five stars but my last visit something kinda gross happened. I love this place, don't get me wrong. The food is some of the best mexican in the city. They have a beautiful outside section and the indoors is cozy and well decorated. However, last time I went my water was served to me in a dirty cup. There was a lip stick stain on the lip of my cup and I took a sip before I noticed!!! The server seemed unapologetic but replaced the cup (which i obviously still didn't drink from). For the rest of my meal he would come up to us and just stand silently look at us for a bit too long before speaking. Every time he came over it just felt so awkward. Next we shared the vegan nachos and I had seen people at the next table eating them and they look so good with guacamole and layered up with beans. First time here! The atmosphere is great, a bit noisy, but what do you expect on a Friday night? So therefore, it didn't ruin my experience one bit, it contributed to the visit! It was full, so we had a fifteen minute wait, that was probably only a little under ten minutes which was fantastic! I wasn't a big fan of the margarita I chose. The cucumber was lovely and I got a chili rum; but it wasn't overall my favorite. I only say that because my go-to isn't a margarita normally but I thought I'd give it a try! My friend enjoyed her Steak fajitas, she is a regular at this spot and brought me along during this visit! I enjoyed the chicken enchiladas but got full quickly, but it was a good meal! Myself and 4 friends met here for dinner on 9/19/2023. We sat outside, very nice and spacious outdoor space. The food and drinks were good and reasonably priced, we were chatting so much that I forgot to take a picture of anything we ate or drank....my oppps.. The reason why it is getting a 3 star rather than 5 is the service, it was horrible. Our server was very short with us, although she smiled, each time she came to our table her demeanor and when speaking to us was short. A male server dropped off our food, we tried to ask him for plates and he quickly walked away and although he was in earshot he never acknowledged us. Brooke also served us, and she was cool. I started with the red sangria and it wasn't great so went with the red wine. My friend ordered the birria tacos, and I ordered the swordfish tacos. My food was very bland and so were my friend's. They both definitely needed more seasoning. My friend also ordered the churros, and she said it wasn't bad. This was my second time visiting in the hopes that in the 5 years since I've dined here, things must have improved. I'm sad to say that was not the case. I tend not to write a review when I've had a less-than-ideal experience at a restaurant, but the people want to know! The first time I came here it was just me and my wife. They seem to genuinely enjoy working, and they check in just the perfect amount of times. The food on the other hand was again super bland. My second attempt here was when I came with my wife and our 2 kids. Again, the service was great, but the food just left me feeling a bit eh. This time we got a bunch more options to make sure it wasn't just the original items we tried. We got plantains, guacamole, tacos, corn, steak, and churros with chocolate sauce for dessert. The main thing we noticed was the lack of seasoning. Everything we had, tasted like there was no salt added. We saw flecks of some type of seasoning on a few items, but there was no salt to be found. I am someone who never adds additional salt to my dishes, and it turns out I couldn't do it anyway since there is no salt/pepper on the tables. The rest of it was just ok. Everything was hot and plentiful, but I just kept coming back to the bland taste. Something that also bugged me was the steak that I got. Besides the fact that there was no salt, the entire thing tasted solely of charcoal. My 2-year-old spit out the steak, which is usually one of his favorite things. The dessert arrived warm. My kids loved it, but not the grown-ups. The chocolate sauce was water-thin and just not exciting enough for me to indulge. Would I return? Never again. But also, don't take my word for it. So my friend was late to meet for dinner and I wasn't in the mood to walk in the humidity tonight. While getting to the restaurant, I saw Cantina Los Caballitos. It was still Happy Hour! And I could grab a quick margarita and some chips with salsa and waste some time people watching. It was worth it. I went inside and was given an option of bar, inside or outside seating. I went with the air conditioning inside and was seated quickly. I was pointed to the QR code menu and inquired about Happy Hour and told the specials. I went with a frozen salted regular margarita and chips with salsa. I passed on the extra $1 for cheese. Chips were nothing special and could have come from anywhere. The two salsas, green and red, were smoky and flavorful. Not my favorite taste, but did the job. The frozen margarita gave me the wild brain freeze. Very good and even better with the orange slices that I asked for to keep in the drink and eat after they froze a bit infusing the margarita flavor. You have to try it! The service was friendly, the music very loud, and I got to people-watch. This place is loud inside. Those who I was observing seemed to be having a good time. I did for the short time I was here. I checked out your Yelp reviews while here, Yelpers. There seems to be a love/hate for this place. I was leaning love tonight. But I really didn't try any food and will have to eventually. The food was always mediocre but reliable and it has fallen from mediocre to simply terrible and borderline inedible. They need new management and an overhaul of 90% of the staff. I've been ordering the nachos here for 15+ years. A few years back the quantity was reduced, but they were so good that I returned biweekly anyway. Recently they changed the steak from solid pieces to some shredded meat. Sadly this will stop me from going out of my way to get these anymore.
