Amazing dim sum. Always have a good experience here. It is always packed on Sundays when we go, so be sure to arrive early to put your name on the list. You'll be waiting, but it's worth it. It can be a little overwhelming for first-timers. There are no menus, really; each carts stops at your table and asks if you want anything and there are so many choices. Don't be afraid to ask specifically what each item is. My favorites: Shumai (pork, chicken, shrimp...all are great, but the chicken is my fave) Pork buns (steamed, fried, and baked...the baked ones taste like King's Hawaiian bread...SO GOOD) Sesame balls (filled with sweet red bean paste) Radish cakes Shrimp dumplings Fried shrimp balls Parking can be challenging during peak hours, but the lot does stretch pretty far behind the building. Actual rating: 3.5 Overall, it was a mediocre experience. There was a good variety of food going around in the carts, and the servers were friendly. Upon arrival, we were seated immediately, and there was very little time for carts to approach us. For 14 total dishes (mostly smaller dishes), the price came out to be ~$16/person after tip, which is incredibly reasonable for dim sum. Some of the dishes included chicken feet, shrimp dumplings, pork buns, tripe, and rotisserie duck. This would be a great place to eat a variety of meats, though there weren't very many veggie options. No one in our group was vegetarian, so we did not encounter this problem. The establishment could improve in its service as my drink was low halfway through my experience, and the person who brought the drinks was nowhere to be seen until the very end whenever we had finished our meal. I love this dim sum. It's great no frills. The carts come around pretty frequently. They have all my favorites like the eggplant with shrimp, shrimp and chive dumplings, shumai (pork, chicken, shrimp), turnip cakes, egg custard. They also have soup dumplings, which I've never seen come around, but it's on their menu. I wonder if you have to ask for it. But anyway, you can eat as much as your stomach can fit and it will still only be like $15 per person. BTW, would not recommend getting the calamari. read more

So many great things to say about this establishment. I don't even know where to begin. For starters, the staff is wonderful and the ultimate professionals. I come here during their lunch hours. During those hours you can get a nice entree and a soup for under 10 dollars. I chose to get the Beef with Vegetables Plate. The food was savory and just down right good! Only dim sum place I've tried in Atlanta during a visit here. It was located in what I would presume a "China town" aka a mix of a lot of Asian restaurants and stores on a strip of highway. I was lowkey disappointed because of the high reviews and high praises an internet search can do for you. The food was definitely underwhelming for me and the restaurant decor didn't help its case. Gosh... the shrimp dumpling (har gow) was ... not like one at all. The skin was mushy, almost felt like it was in the freezer for too long and then put it on a steamer for way too long as well. The shrimp fell right out and it was soggy inside too. Had their chicken feet.... was alright but something about the flavor was just off. Their pork spareribs was not traditional either. IMO you just can't do Canto dim sum style when none of the waiters or waitresses speak it. That was one of my biggest pet peeve here. read more

Lots of good dim sum places in the area, but this has been my go to spot! Every visit has been pleasant, both food and service-wise. Prices are cheap. Love that they leave the Chili oil on the table. I love to use lots of it, so many places that don't leave it on the table I hate that I have to keep asking staff to bring me more. Canton House Chinese Restaurant on Buford Highway is a large, well lit, nicely decorated restaurant serving some really good Chinese food. They have an extensive lunch special list with many great dishes to choose from at a very reasonable price. They also serve Dim Sum if you prefer. Myself and a couple of friends went for lunch yesterday. It was my first time there. I ordered the Kung Pao chicken which came with fried rice, an egg roll and hot & sour soup. Everything was well prepared and delicious. And, a great deal at only $6.25 for all of that. My friends ordered the chicken & broccoli and the sweet & sour chicken. Both looked great and they each enjoyed their food very much. The meat to vegetable ratio on all 3 dishes was very good. Lots of meat, as it should be! The only complaint I have is that our dishes did not come at out the same time. The dishes were brought out about 7 minutes apart, which got pretty awkward for the third guy at the table to order when the first guy was nearly done with his lunch by the time his food arrived. Not sure if this is typical, I honestly did not ask but it is certainly not the preferred way to be served. I do recommend it for the food. Stumbled upon this place after having a craving for dim sum 15 years ago with my family. At the time we just moved to Georgia, and lived pretty close to Canton House. Honestly, the place has changed a lot. It changed from a very old, messy, and old traditional Chinese restaurant to a very modernized place with giant chandelier visible from the road. When I initially walked in I started to get a little nervous because the chandelier is so attractive. Let's be honest...the really good dim sum places aren't the most aesthetically pleasing. The inside is very modern with clean lines and wood furnishings. I usually only come here for Dim Sum, so I never look at the menu to see what they have. I mean...everyone mostly come here for the Dim Sum only. Everything came out steaming hot on the Dim Sum cart. So fresh and tasty! Even the wrappers tasted fresh! You know how sometimes you go eat dim sum and the wrappers taste thick/hard and refrigerated? Well not these. So soft, not too thick and had a nice bite to them. My favorite is the Crystal Shrimp Dumpling and Radish cake that came out from the same cart. These were so juicy and just absolutely delicious. Radish Cake: I've had this dish at other places where you can tell that it's been sitting out a little too long because it starts to get hard. These were definitely fresh. I grew up in NYC and NJ going to some pretty amazing dim sum places with several levels of seating and wasn't sure what I'd find in Atlanta, but I was so excited to finally try Canton House. It was a bit of a wait (approx. 30 min which is totally expected on a Sunday, so be sure to come early and put your name in) but totally worth it. My favorite aspect of this place is the wide variety of options they have, much more than a typical dim sum restaurant. Our favorite dishes included the shrimp siu mai, pork spare ribs, clams with black bean sauce and sticky rice cake with pork. We ordered the spicy chicken feet too, but the texture was a little tough and not as tender as I'm used to. The service was fantastic. The servers were so nice and there was a steady stream of carts and food coming around, we never had to wait for long. I also love that they serve boba in the carts, I've never seen that before! Canton House is my latest find and now I am a fan, perhaps I am a late bloomer. Used to alternate among Oriental Pearl, Royal China and in recent times, Canton House until lately I completely ditched Royal China. That Royal China was like a relationship gone so wrong (I have posted a review on Royal China). So I moved on. At this moment I am going to rank Canton House as my #1 choice for dim sum. Canton House has better food and service than Oriental Pearl. Staffs are always friendly and almost everyone there speak English. Someone commented perhaps the staffs in Canton House are younger, which means less grumpy and speak good English. Oh yes, there are many grumpy staffs at Oriental Pearl esp one bespectacled senior staff (captain?) who was extremely rude to me once when I innocently tried to order something from the menu before 11am. Anyway, the quality of the dim sum is definitely better at Canton House. I have ordered twice from their menu, the dinner were equally as authentic and delicious too. I took off one star since should I be saying this? Hmmm.. Arrgghhh... Ok, I hope she won't be offended.. The lady behind the counter.. Dim Sum yum indeed! With the exception of dinner at Kevin Gillespie's Gunshow, I had never tried this style of dining before. Once I got the hang of it (it's a buffet that comes to you!), I loved it, and I was practically grabbing items off of the rolling carts. Steamed pork dumplings? Okay! Duck? Yes, please! Calamari? Delish! The only items that didn't look appetizing to me were the desserts, which were all variations of gelatinous pudding (and I hate mushy desserts). The standout items (to me) were the flat shrimp dumplings that came with something that looked like crumbled up cornflakes on top, the fried birds nest looking items that came in pairs filled with pork or shrimp, the steamed pork buns, the Chinese broccoli, the calamari, and something called "footballs" which were basically fried rice wrapper dumplings filled with pork and scallions. If there's an item you want or got last time, just ask, and they'll bring it by. While I liked everything I tried (yes, even the tripe and the chicken feet were okay), the best items are fried and pretty heavy. This is not a meal for a dieter, or for a vegetarian for that matter, because just about everything is topped or cooked with meat- there's pork, shrimp, or meat sauce on everything. For the most part, the servers were very helpful at explaining what the items on their carts were, but I wouldn't rely on their descriptions alone to determine what has meat or shellfish or what have you. This location is insanely busy. I was grateful that we had a reservation for our large party, because there were groups spilling into the parking lot while they were waiting for their tables. I'd also recommend getting here early to navigate the cramped, small parking lot. I managed to snag a parking spot right in front of the restaurant in their packed parking lot, but they did have a sign directing people to additional parking, but it sounded like it was a hike away. I was sure that we were ringing up quite the bill (see the above re: pulling items off of the cart), but we ate ourselves uncomfortably full, took home leftovers, and still only paid $13.50/person ($108 for a table of eight people). Service was good throughout the meal - the carts kept rolling, plates were promptly cleared, and drinks were refilled, but there was a little bit of a hang up in getting our cards back after we paid. I highly NOT recommend this place because the service was so horrible I did not even get to eat my food. No dumpling and gai lan makes Han something-something! This was one of the dim sum places I haven't tried so when my friends came to visit, I thought it would be a great idea for all of us to try this restaurant. FAIL. There were five of us on a (n early) lazy Sunday afternoon, and the place was actually not that packed. We were seated immediately, and then we were appropriately ignored for 10 minutes. I was kind of disappointed bc I was giving my friends a bad experience of Atlanta. Finally, an older gentleman came by and gave us our chopsticks and tea. Yet the cart girls just ignored us! Hello!? Do you not want my business?? Irate, I finally made the decision to get up and go. And guess what? No one tried to stop us. Well, alrighty then! For the record, I shared this experience with my friend and she told me the same thing happened to her when she went with a group of friends to the restaurant ( she went last year). Not only was the service slow but one of the servers gave her the wrong dish and refused to exchanged it bc the server said that's what she heard them order. These two experiences are quite possibly 2 isolated experiences or the servers just are intimidated by large groups of ppl (?). I might give them another chance in the far future, but seeing how there are plenty of other, good, reliable dim sum places along Buford, it might take some heavy coercion. read more

I didn't like it. I have a lot of friends who have recommended Canton House for dim sum over the years. My daughter and I stopped by for a late afternoon meal on a rainy day-- when our fave Chinese restaurant was unexpectedly closed for a family emergency and La Mei Zei wasn't yet open for dinner. Maybe it was on off day-- but the place wasn't super clean, service was slow and inattentive, and the food was not awesome. I tried an eggplant and a bacon-wrapped shrimp. Weird flavor on the eggplant and cold, rubbery bacon. Daughter ordered sesame chicken and it was made with dark meat and had a weird texture. I love Buford Highway and don't want to see any landmarks like Canton House fail. Perhaps it was an off day and off hours but I won't be back. read more

Well, this was my first time having Dim Sum and boy did I enjoy myself. My name has changed to Greedy Goblin. Anyway, though this was my first time with this type of meal, I still know when food is good and service is good. Canton did a good job with both. I have to say that I really enjoy the carts coming around and being able to pick out what ever I think might tickle my tongue and my belly. Either I don't know or can't remember what all I had, but I can tell you that I had b-b-q pork belly buns, and lots of shrimp done in various ways along with some wondrous dumplings stuffed with all kinds of goodies. I can't wait to go back because after I was full, I saw cart after cart filled with goodies that I will dream about tonight. We were a large group and service was great. We did get there as soon as they opened and I'm sure that helped because as we were leaving, that placed was filled up (and it's a pretty large place). I loved the experience. We love Canton House! We were recently there a few weeks ago, and for Father's Day before then. Even on the busiest days, we're always almost seated immediately because we're a couple with no kids. I've been going to Canton House with my family since I was a little girl with my dad (I'm 30 y/o), who was a pharmacist that used to practice nearby before he relocated to the south side. He is retired now, and has moved to LA -- but my fiancée and I still frequent Canton House as often as we can because it is nostalgic for me, and the restaurant has great quality food. The food portions and pricing are comparable to other places. The only downside is that the parking lot can be tight on the weekends. Try to get there early on the weekends (10:30/11am) if you can for a spot and a minimal line. We highly recommend Canton House! read more

Literally only 1 cart walking around the entire time we eat here. I asked the guy 3 times for napkins, he nodded and disappeared. We ordered vegetables and it smells old. Canton House can be found on the East side of Buford Hwy (that's on your right traveling North between Beverly Hills Dr and Laventure Dr - sounds like you're in LA, doesn't it?). The building has a tower facade that allows for a lot of natural light but appears small from the front. Don't let that fool you as this restaurant can seat plenty and usually fills up for weekend brunch. To be honest, I've never had Canton House's regular menu - I've only come for the weekend brunch dim sum. I've only had dim sum in a handful of places in Atlanta and really the experience has been less than par. I was originally introduced to the concept in the West coast and the difference is stark both in quality, variety and pricing. If you're not familiar with the concept, you sit and get your drink order to your server while carts come by with various steamed, fried or otherwise cooked plates of food. Where I've had this in the west coast, the cost of each item was maintained by the size, color and shape of the container - at the end everything is stacked up and multiplied by a dollar amount for your total. That's the second thing that makes dim sum special, the larger your party, the more food you get to sample so it induces more of a familial style eating experience. So come prepared with your friends and family and don't be shy, even of the unfamiliar. There will be many, many options, almost all with some variety of meat, usually seafood or shrimp (but there are a few chicken, beef and pork options). The hard part is remembering what you had in case something stood out and you want to order more - it might serve you well to write down what you liked or maybe photo and catalog as you go (I always try to do this but everyone grabs up everything so fast that it's hard to do - make sure you photo while it's in its container so you know when it comes around again). There aren't many vegetarian options - the Chinese broccoli and ong choy are delicious, not much else is sans meat (I'm sure I'm overlooking some other items but I'm not remembering them as I write). The dim sum at Canton House, while it's probably the best you can get this close to town, is a little weak flavored when compared to what I was getting on the West coast. That being said, you'll still enjoy yourself as much as I do, just go with the flow and take anything that sounds interesting. You'll quickly establish your favorites. I do have a bit of a love-hate relationship with dim sum. I love the variety, the communal eating experience, and the great service at Canton House. I hate how full I feel afterwards - I need to bring someone with me to say "STOP!!" so I don't feel miserable afterwards. Yeah, I know, first world problem. It was just good, nothing more, nothing less. Canton House is much more Vietnamese-style dimsum than traditional Chinese dimsum. Wasn't a fan of the $15 fried calamari. It was overly dry and salty. Aged duck egg and pork Jiao (congee) was good, not spectacular. Tripe was good, chicken feet were good. I'm not one to eat these, but my friended insisted. These were the two best items. Flower tea was good. Bok choy (or the greens) was very, very bland. They're not too good about clearing plates from tables or refilling drinks unless specifically asked to. Carts came around. We got charged for a dessert that we never got bc the kitchen stopped making them; the girl who charged us never came back to follow-up with the order to tell us or remove the order. but it is slightly a mad house to serve carts, so I don't blame her for her lack of service. All in all, I will be back if I'm craving the chicken feet or tripe and am in the area. Next time I'll try more authentic things off the actual menu. read more

I'm kind of surprised by the mediocre reviews of Canton House. My bajillion visits have always featured very delish food, especially dim sum. If a restaurant can please my picky family, it's doing something right. Word has gotten out since over the years, the clientele has shifted from being primarily Asian to a more diverse crowd. And the cart pushers have also become non-Asian and English-speaking too. During my last visit, the service was somewhat less attentive than it has been in the past: empty plates not being cleared away quickly, water glasses left unfilled a little too long. But the folks working here are always polite and helpful. There's a healthy mix of fresh dishes during weekend lunch dim sum service. If you want a certain dish that isn't coming out on a cart, just let someone know, and he/she can bring it out to you. I went to a relative's wedding reception here. Canton House is another Cantonese/Vietnamese restaurant that serves dimsum, regular food, and holds wedding receptions. So this review is about how they handled the food for the Wedding reception. Canton House's regular Chinese food and dimsum tastes A-OK. It's nothing special. But man, their wedding reception food was one of the worst Cantonese food I've eaten. I guess serving 100's of people forced them to focus on quantity, not quality. Their wedding menu consisted of the standard 10 course meal. I think the best meal we had were the drinks--you know, the water and sodas. Crab Meat Fish Maw Soup: This is one of my favorite soups at Cantonese restaurants. I always get this soup whenever go somewhere. Well, it was bland and had no flavor. If I see people putting in massive amounts of soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil into their soup, something is wrong. Also the texture of the meats felt weird and disgusting. The FIve Cold Styles was probably their best dish. When I say, "best," I mean below average. It consisted of Salt and Pepper Shrimp, Jellyfish, Deep Fried Shrimp Rolls, mystery meat, and mystery meat. This dish tasted okay. At least the Salt and Pepper Squid had some flavor to it. The rest of the dish were overcooked or un-fresh crap on a plate. Next came the Lobster Claw Meatballs. The meatball looked huge. It was stuffed with shrimp. It gives people with shellfish allergies nightmares. It was tough, chewy, and had no flavor. Then another lobster dish came out: Ginger Lobster with Green Onion. This dish was inedible. Not because it was bland and tough, it was because the meat would not fall out of the shell. We tried pulling, prying, but we could not get the meat out of the shell. Not to mention the sauce that was drenched on it made the lobster slippery to get a good hold of. It was an horrible dish that was literally not edible, whether we wanted to eat it or not. The Abalone with Shiitake Mushrooms once again followed the same traditions: bland. Seriously, do the cooks at Canton House know what seasonings are? What the heck is the flavorless sauce they put on top anyway? Anyway, the abalone was disgusting. They ruined a fine delicacy. The Double Roasted Duck was bland (no surprise there), boney, dried out, and tough. They did give us some sauce to flavor that thing. I had to drench it on there. It also came with the head, I thought that was a nice touch--especially to freak out the gwai-los. The Seafood Birds Nest had a nice presentation. In the end, it was another bland dish. On the menu, they named this next dish as "Streamed Braised Whole Fish." There was nothing steamed or braised about it. It was deep fried. It actually had flavor though. However, it was just another overcooked mess. The fried rice was another bland dish. By this time, I think got the point of their food: They didn't want to give us high blood pressure. I appreciated that. I think the total bill for this reception was around $500-something per table. They squeezed 10 people per table. So I guess it came out to about $50 per person. Was that a good deal? Based on the quality of food, nope. Look, I get it. The staff worked their butts off. I'm sure the kitchen looked like a nightmare. Trying to pump out 8-9 huge dishes out at the same time would be hell for anyone. But they've been doing this for a long time. They should've figured out how to give a decent meal for a reception. Also, the next day, I woke up to a stomach ache that I had to purge out. I would've given them 2 stars, but that sealed the deal to drop a star from them. They did give the wedding party a decent space. It could fit 100 something people no problem. It even had enough room for a dance floor and stage. Although, I wished it was a bit more closed off from the main area. I'm not sure how the non-reception area food was during this time. I'm sure it sucked because the cooks were probably focused on making bad food for the reception. If you come to Canton House and see a wedding there, I would walk out and go elsewhere. If you're Chinese, Vietnamese, or Other looking for a Chinese restaurant to do a wedding reception, I would avoid Canton House. I would consider the other places --especially if the price is about the same. You don't want to lose face by serving crappy food to your wedding guests. Canton House will not execute on the quality of food. And based on how much food looked left over and not eaten, The other guests concur with me. read more

We participated in a wedding banquet with many out of town guests. The quality and presentation of each dish were impressive. The seafood soup, appetizer platter, crab shrimp balls, lobster, and many other dishes were so delectable. The only dish I thought that lacked the flavor despite the Chinese sausage in it was the fried rice. I've only dined there before for dim sum but now I'd love to return for dinner with a big crew to savor many dishes they offer. They roll around the dimsum cart and you get to choose what delicious stuff you want which usually ends up being way too much but its tough to stop here. All-day dim sum! Our original place to go for dim sum didn't work out as we had hoped and we found this place as an alternative. I was worried that they wouldn't be serving dim sum since we were eating at around 2pm, but to our pleasant surprise, they supposedly serve dim sum all day long. They had a lot of selection and people come around really often to show-case what they have in their cart. The manager was really nice and came to check up on how we were doing. He was a little pushy about having us order more food (joking saying that we are not eating enough and saying how we should definitely try certain dishes), but don't be afraid to say no thank you. We did order the durian pastry at his suggestion. I'm not a fan of durian, but these were not bad because the pungent durian taste and smell was subtle. I also enjoyed their chashu pastry. I wanted to try the dim sum and received cold dumplings and asked if I could get warm dumplings. The waiter took the dumplings and never returned. After about 45 minutes when everyone was done eating and ready to return to work, we received the bill with a charge for the dumplings. I brought it to their attention and asked to have it taken off, but instead of taking it off, a waiter "suddenly" appeared from the kitchen before we got up to leave, with a plate of dumplings, which was obviously just taken out of a microwave. This was my first time coming here! The food were decent for dim sum. Some might've been over cooked. We got hot tea as well, it was good. But, it's not sweetened. If you want sweetener, have to ask! Also, they don't give you menus, which was weird....I mean normally if you don't have menus, they make you scan for a menu. But they didn't have that either. They're not really social distancing either. But, the table I sat at was far enough for me. The service took forever! Very slow service...there's not many carts coming as fast as it usually should be. They were really busy though. We also had a hair on our sesame ball, they were kind enough to take it off. Best Dim Sum in Atlanta IMHO, have yet to get a bad dish in any of my visits. My absolute favorite is their barbecue pork bun A+++++++

This is a popular place to get dim sum. Personally, I think the dim sum here is consistently not great but not bad either. There is parking available here but since this place is pretty popular it can be difficult getting a spot. The restaurant is large with plenty of seating even when it is pretty busy. At some dim sum places, you order what you want and they bring it out to you. At Canton Houses, they have employees pushing around carts of food so that you can pick and choose as they roll on by your table. The last time I was here, I was seated near the kitchen so pretty much every cart stopped by our table which was nice. The waiters were attentive so the water/tea was refilled and the empty dishes were taken away in a timely manner. The pricing is affordable as well. Recommend going with a group of 4+ though so you can try out a lot of dishes. Food I liked: +Pork dumplings (siu mai) - Definitely a staple item I always order and these were good! +Chicken feet +Fried pork dumpling (ham siu gok) - I LOOOVE these fried glutinous rice dumplings with pork filling. I could eat these forever. +Tripe Other food: +Shrimp dumplings (har gow) - I thought these were okay. I've had better though. +Radish/turnip cake (lo baak gou) - These were poorly executed. Kind of bland. +Sponge cake - Mediocre and dry. Overall pretty decent dim sum in the Atlanta area. This is my go to Dim Sum place in Atlanta. Do yourself a favor and order some roast pork or roast duck off the menu as well. Also like their pan fried noodles. But dim sum is the star, and they have cart after cart. Favs include the steamed and baked buns, the long noodles filled with shrimp or pork, the various dumplings, ribs with black bean sauce, sticky rice, congee.
