I was looking forward to the tofu and bok choy but they no longer offer it. I got the tofu and vegetables. The tofu was super mushy in the middle which I don't recall it ever being before. My number one choice for cheap Chinese food in Salinas. The portions are generous and the food is delicious. The restaurant itself is very small and is often busy during lunch and dinner hours, but even then, the food is served at a reasonable time. I had the kung pao shrimp lunch special which was served with chow mein and fried wonton. The meal was only $8 and the portion was big enough for two not-so-hungry people or one very hungry person. One of my co-workers got take-out from Cantonese Express. I stopped by one day for lunch and actually carried out a 20 minute conversation in Mandarin with the owners of the place, waiting for my Mapo Tofu dish! (I don't speak it fluently, though I can understand it fairly well.) The owners are recent immigrants from China who can't speak a lick of English, but their warmth shines through. I love that the restaurant's kitchen is COMPLETELY open - it shares the same space as the seating area without crowding guests. You know it's a good, legit place when the people behind the scenes take the doors away and allow you to watch them cooking your food. Many hungry people walking in! Here the staff was very efficient and the place was very clean. We were not terribly hungry but wanted "something" to tide us over till dinner and we chose a large bowl of Wor Won Ton soup and a side of 6 eggsrolls plus some iced tea.The wait was only 10 minutes and the egg rolls came first so we could munch on them while the soup was being prepared. I usually split a meal or bring the leftovers home for dinner. This place has BIG portions!! Tried this place for the first time. I phoned in for pick up and it was prepped fast! Parking is great!! The portion sizes were great, I got two lunch specials and was pleasantly surprised with the weight of the bag!! Once I got home and tasted everything I was disappointed. The Mongolian beef has an overpowering flavor to it. I couldn't finish it. The fried rice had a few pieces of peas sprinkled into it. I'm not sure if that's how they specifically prefer to make it, don't get me wrong it wasn't as if they took rice and poured soy sauce on it because it had potential but was unfinished if that makes sense. The chow mein platter was huge and tasted ok but wasn't great. I feel that fried rice and chow mein should be staple dishes and they were both ok. I don't think I'd return, if somebody offered it I'd pick at it but I'm still on the search for a great Chinese restaurant. read more

Came here on a Saturday to get food checked multiple times before going to make sure they were open. The sign on the door even said open Mon-Sat 11-8. Needless to say they weren't open. Drive out for nothing. I would appreciate a little more professionalism as far as following what they advertise. This restaurant is such a hidden gem that serves the most tasty Chinese food in the world. My family and I discovered Cantonese Express after we were disappointed with many other Chinese restaurants in Salinas but one visit to this restaurant and we fell in love with the food. My favorite thing I was impressed with are their noodles and they have a wonderful flavor of their own and the Barbeque Pork Chow Mein tastes so awesome and I had never ever had Barbeque Pork Chow Mein until I tried Cantonese Express's Barbeque Pork Chow Mein and now it's my go-to Chinese dish when I eat here. And Cantonese Express has the most friendly staff who is willing to assist you in any way they can. Decided to try this place out after a friend posted that her husband took her here for the first time, and had said it was very good. Also, after reading all of the good reviews, I just couldnt pass this place up. My husband and I went in for lunch today. My husband had the Mongolian beef with fried rice, I had sweet and sour chicken with chow mein. Both our dishes were delicious, and now have decided this is now our place to go for Chinese food. As we were leaving, we were introduced to a lovely young couple who are regulars there. They gave us a few suggestions,some of their favorites.
