If I could, I would give this place zero stars. My entire experience was horrible. I bought a used Honda Pilot from Capitol just under two months ago. When I picked up my car, I went to the receptionist desk, she was on the phone so I patiently waited. Then another employee walked up. When the receptionist got off the phone, instead of helping me, she turned to the other woman and they talked about a bagel order. Only when she was done with that did she even look at me. She told me that I could pick up my key with Mike and where to find him. He gave me my keys and I walked out the door to find that one set didn't work. I walked back in and told him it wasn't working and asked if I could get the battery on the key checked. He said I would have to take it to a Honda dealer because they have to hook it up to a computer. Come to find out when I did take it there, it was just the battery and anyone could have replaced it. He was just lazy and unhelpful. Fast forward 2 months...I notice a vibration in my engine and my check engine light comes on. I take it to the Honda dealer and come to find out, I need a new transmission. Jackie, my sales person at Capitol Subaru told me that all their cars go through thorough inspections. I asked specifically about this car's transmission and she assured me that it was checked. She even told me that once they had someone drive off the lot and their transmission broke, so they replaced it immediately because they didn't want their customers to have a bad experience. I thought she was telling me this to show how well they treat their customers and that they take care of them but apparently, this is a common problem for them. When I called the dealership about the problem I left a message on Mike's voice mail. I received a call from Stephanie, she asked me to email the reports I was given from Honda to Mike and that he would call me the next day. In the email I stated I wanted any service records they had on the car (I never received them). I got a call back from Jackie saying that Mike was really busy and that he was calling the warranty company to make sure it was covered under my warranty. Ok, good. Then I get a call from someone in the service department asking when I can get the car down to Salem (I live in Portland) so they can look at it to see if it needs to be fixed and that they could put me in a loaner car. I said that I thought it would be better if they came to get it because I didn't feel comfortable with driving it down there. He said they won't do that and I told him that was unacceptable. He then said, "I'm done talking to you" and hung up on me! I wasn't even mad yet! But that surely pissed me off. So I called Mike, again got his voice mail. Left a message telling him what happened and that I wanted to hear from him by the end of the day. I got a call about an hour later, he said that the repair was covered under my warranty. Great. Good. But then that was it. No sorry, nothing. So, I called the President, Scott. Got his voice mail (surprise) and explained what happened and how it was bullsh!t that he allows his staff to treat customers this way. Not only will I never buy from Capitol Subaru again, I will tell anyone I know looking for a car to never consider them. Because frankly, this was awful and absolutely the WORST customer service experience I have EVER had. read more

This place really sets the bar for great customer service. While browsing Subaru's online I saw the car I wanted actually listed in the middle range of KBB's fair market price listing. After searching for a couple of months it's not something you see very often. I called and Stacey answered the phone. I asked for the best price on the vehicle and he called me back within minutes. I said if the test drive went well I would happily buy it at that price. They had no problem holding the car for me while I made the trip down from Hillsboro. When I got there the car was pulled up front and ready to go. I was greeted right away, and Stacey came right over. We went to the car and he went over controls and features. After a few minutes of driving I knew it was the car for me! Back at the dealership I said I was ready to purchase the car. Stacey was very pleasant and efficient at preparing all of the paperwork. I wasn't sure about the down payment amount and term I wanted so he showed me a spread of options so I could pick the right fit for me. In about an hour I was ready to head home in my very own Subaru Forester. To send me off Stacey came over and made sure the dash time/date was accurate and that my phone was paired for music on the way home. After several bad experiences with dealerships in the Portland area this experience was a breath of fresh air. Dare I say enjoyable? I bought my Outback there this summer. They are friendly on the front end making the sale. Today I found that one of my tires has a pin hole in the sidewall that couldn't be fixed. I've never had a new tire do this. I called and asked for the manager and they gave me to someone named "Rory" who said he was the sales manager. He was nasty, rude and incompetent. His response to me was "what do you want me to do about it?" At first he wouldn't give me his whole name. What kind of a manager acts like that? Very bad experience. read more

WE took our car in for a Recall airbag fix and now the engine is blown up. they are saying its our fault that its wrong, they want to charge us 1100 to diagnose and 1100 to put it back together if we decide to not have them fix it. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE! I repeat, do not UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES take your vehicle here to be serviced. I have had nothing but bad experiences with this dealership. A few years ago, I took my almost new Subaru Impreza in for an oil change. I smelled gasoline when I was driving the car for a few days after, so I popped the hood and discovered that the technicians had left my oil cap off and my engine was completely covered in oil. That's right. They left off my OIL CAP on a routine oil change. They did not give me my money back or offer to right the wrong when I informed them of their mistake. Recently, I took in my car for a check up. The car now has only 60,000 miles and has had no major issues or accidents, but they told me I needed new front AND rear brakes, TWO new axels on the front, and FOUR new tires. I didn't believe them (thankfully) and only opted for the brake replacement out of caution. They misquoted the price over the phone and charged me double when I arrived at the dealership, and then did not believe me when I said they had misquoted me over the phone. After all this, I was set to never visit this dealership again in my life---and it was only topped off when I took my car to Jiffy Lube for a follow up and discovered they had left my engine air filter WIDE OPEN. Clearly, they cannot handle Subaru cars properly, which is a shame since they are a Subaru dealership...please spare yourself (and your car) the pain and expense of visiting this place for service and opt to go somewhere else. read more

I picked up a used Outback from Capitol Toyota back in August. I had some issues with the locks and brought it in to Capitol Subaru to have it checked out in early October and brought it back in in mid-October to get it fixed. The first time I brought it in and was told it would be ready by the end of the day. Unfortunately, it took an extra day as it was a bigger problem than we had expected. The second time, I had my car the same day. I dropped my car off at 8:00am both days. The free shuttle service is a nice deal as well. They drove picked me up and dropped me off 3 times and I don't have any complaints about it. The staff at Capitol Subaru were cordial and professional. I called from out of state in regards to a vehicle they had in their inventory (as displayed on their website and cars.com). I spoke with a sales representative, though I can't remember his name, and told him I might be coming from out of state, and I requested pricing information. He said something about his email giving him trouble (I work in tech services, this is the 21st century, THERE ARE SOLUTIONS to "email trouble") and said he'd try to send it to me. A day or two later, another sales representative called me and asked me to clarify what I was asking for. I said, pricing info, to include dealer invoice, like I had asked for before. He said they'd get it to me. They never did. Some three weeks later, yet another representative called me to ask me if I was still in the market for the model. No, I'd already made my purchase elsewhere, because among other reasons, two employees I had spoken to had never fulfilled a basic request for pricing info. I think they just didn't want to take the time to deal with an out-of-state purchaser; it's not like they could try to convince me to buy something else when I "swung by" from 1000 miles away. I called on a car that I had seen on Capitol's website. I stumbled across it when looking outside of Portland for a new/used car to replace my current car, that I feared would soon become unreliable. I talked to Joe, who was very nice and assured me that I would be treated fairly and not guilted into a purchase. I was skeptical, but when I called back a few days later to make an appointment to see the car, he contacted his coworker, Frannie to work with me since he was not at work that day. When I got to the dealership, it was close to their closing time, but they happily waited for me as I made my way through traffic the day before Thanksgiving. What I experienced at this dealership was one of the nicest experiences I've had with customer service and sales, maybe ever. Frannie didn't mess me around, she told me what they could do for me, and how they could make the deal work. They had concern for the health of any loan they would give me, rather than pushing a loan through for $5000 more than the car was worth. I really appreciate the honesty and transparency I found. I was never asked to sign anything before I actually signed finance papers, no one cornered me or held on to my keys in order to make a sale. Frannie simply provided impeccable customer service and was extremely helpful and friendly. Thank you Capitol Subaru for my fantastic new car! A LONG POST. READ TO THE END. IT'S AN INTERESTING STORY. They seem like decent enough folks, but their internal communications stink. I called about a specific vehicle and the man who took the call said he'd get right back to me after he checked on its availability. He never called back. So, after a number of hours, I called again. "Oh yes, it's here," said salesman #2. I drive 40 miles to see the vehicle and am told it is on a test drive. I drive around Salem and return after 45 minutes and am told, "We can't seem to find the car. Would you like to look at something else?" We piddle around looking at other cars that were not at all what I wanted. Then someone comes in and says that it appears that the car had previously been sold. I was waiting for it to come back from a test drive. When had it been sold? To whom? And why hadn't I been told? Who knows? No one could find out. Anyway, two days later I see that the vehicle is still on the website, now with a lowered price. I call again and salesman #3 fuddles around and finally comes back and says, "It's been sold," which is fair. But why then had the price been changed on the website? No explanation. For all I know, it is still on the lot. But I'm no longer interested in dealing with them. Professionalism counts to me, and I did not have the feeling I was dealing with a professional organization. I'd say, check them out if you live in Salem. But don't drive a block out of your way to visit them based on either their website or the word of the salesperson on the phone. They need to get their collective act together. UPDATE: A week later. The car is still on their website, and it still intrigues me. So, to give some finality to my fascination I called again to make sure that it was sold. I'm sent to a very polite man who says he will check on it and get back to me in about five minutes. Two days later, and he has never called back. Charlie Brown and the football, I'm afraid. These folks are mediocre. FURTHER UPDATE: I have the greatest respect for businesses that recognize where they have fallen short and make serious efforts to correct a bad situation. Capitol Auto Group did just that. Note that the effort came from Capitol Toyota and not Capitol Subaru, but they are sibling organizations under a common ownership and philosophy. Specifically, the folks at Capitol contacted me personally and we had a good conversation about what had occurred. I told them I held no hard feelings and that I would, indeed, consider them in the future should they have a car that interested me. As it turned out, they had a Toyota Avalon similar to the one that I had initially sought when all the problems took place. I went down from Portland and was handed to a salesman named Gabe, who was aware of what had taken place and proved to be one of the most enjoyable salesmen I had ever encountered. He did not try to counter my concerns about the car with unfounded theories about why a particular concern was not real; he did not do the cheesy salesperson thing of trying to get me to make affirmations in my conversation. He thought along with me and shared his own thoughts about the vehicle, about which he was well-informed. I enjoyed working with him. Alas, I lost the car by not acting quickly enough, which was understandable because they had it at an excellent price. Bottom line, though: I will not only go back there, I will start there in searching dealerships for a car. This is all because of how seriously they took my complaints here on Yelp and how civil and intelligent they were in trying to assist me in finding a vehicle. Kudos to Charley and Gabe -- two professionals who happily make me eat my prior words about Capitol. Car selling and buying are stressful tasks. Gabe and Charley know how to be honest and helpful without being overbearing. I now am a fan of Capitol. I look forward to finding my next car at their dealerships. read more

I bought a new outback from Eric at capitol subaru and it was great. My local subaru dealer was very unhelpful and only wanted to sell a car with lots of extras and upgrades, which I couldn't afford. Every time I left I would feel poor and tasteless that I couldn't afford a car with leather interior and a moonroof. At the same time my car was breaking down and I really needed something new. I put a bid request in on truecar.com and had a few good offers, the lowest was from a dealership that is so dishonest their yelp reviews have been filtered because the exact same reviews (word for word) appear on multiple sites! Apparently they have been trying to spam sites like yelp because the real reviews are so negative. The 2nd lowest price was actually from capitol subaru, so I was somewhat hesitant to trust I could really get the car at the price they offered. It was over $1500 less than my local dealership, and they even got me the perfect color and interior! They brought the car in earlier than expected, and everything was as-promised- I still sort of can't believe how pleasant and easy the whole thing was. The people at capitol subaru worked with me to get exactly what I wanted, and we did it all over the internet. They were completely professional and the whole experience was actually enjoyable- I got the perfect car at a great price and couldn't be happier. read more

I just wanted to do a quick update after my experience yesterday. The guys had told us that when the license plates came in to just stop by and they would put them on for us. I happened to need to go out that way and figured I would stop by there Saturday morning and have them put the plates on. I could certainly have done it by myself, but decided I may as well let them do it since I was over that direction any how. I think I sort of expected that they would say, "oh, we don't do that on Saturdays and you'll have to come back during the week". They were more than happy to put my plates on, and they also offered to wash my car while I was there! It was such a pleasant surprise! My mom and I went inside and had a cup of coffee while we waited, and I had a nice chat with one of the sales guys while we waited for the car to be done. So far it's just been a lovely experience all the way around. Buying cars is a stressful situation, but this has been anything but that. read more

First I want to say my overall experience was not an easy or smooth process. But thanks to some key employees they were able to capture my business and recommendation moving forward. I first purchased a 2015 Subaru WRX premium from them in July of 2017. I was told during the sale that the car was under a 60,000 mile warranty, and that any concerns I had about faults with the vehicle could be put to rest. I was also told that it was a Certified Pre Owned vehicle in every way stock, except for the fact that it had aftermarket rims. Upon test driving the vehicle I had inquired about some squeaking and heavy-ness of the clutch and Kasey, my sales representative, informed me that it was normal, and again it was covered under warranty for another 15,000 miles anyway. Fast forward a few weeks later and the clutch started slipping in high gear on the freeway when accelerating, and I brought the car in for service. I was told by two servicemen upon drop off that the clutch was under warranty and they would fix it for free. Shortly there-after I received a phone call from the service technician stating the service representative was wrong and that it would be 2000$ to repair the damage to the transmission. I went straight to the sales management team and after some steadfast negotiating and debate they agreed to buy back the car from me for the exact price I paid towards trade in value, OR I could opt to cash out and I would lose the DMV licensing and title fee's associated with my purchase. During this time the sales leader who handled the situation was Justin Wadsworth, and he did a remarkable job at establishing a solution while remaining empathetic and diplomatic. Once I had decided to sell the car back to them he also managed to recapture my business by obtaining invoice pricing on a vehicle of my choice, and introducing me to Jesus Torres who was my new sales representative moving forward. Jesus was able to steer me towards my next purchase, a 2018 WRX STI with a stand-up attitude and ethics. For the first time in my many auto sales transactions I experienced a salesman say "I don't know" to some of my questions. Coming from a consumer this is an absolute delight and establishes a firm trust with your salesperson. I was given a loaner car for several weeks while they located a vehicle with the specs I had requested, and another sales leader, Jermaine Washington, was a tremendous help at battling the accessory/labor invoice pricing I was initially promised, and at keeping the company responsible for its initial promise. All in all, I love my new Subaru STI and I plan to buy a Cross-trek soon from Jesus. Justin, Jesus, and Jermaine were able to take a very unhappy customer who had been overpromised in order to close a sale and reverse the negative impacts to instead establish a loyal on-going client. I hope all three of them are on the fast track to management because with the growing cost of investing in a new vehicle, it will take 5 star employees like them to rise above competitors. read more

First, I'd like to say that having two kids and a husband with a crazy schedule, there are very few days when we can find a babysitter and actually go car shopping and we went here hoping we would get a straight forward answers and no B.S. We went into this dealership hoping to trade in our 2011 Toyota highlander and get a used Subaru forester to get rid of our car payments which we mentioned several times. We looked at two used vehicles and decided we liked the car that was less beat up looking but not in the best of shape. Granted they had just got the car as a trade in, but it had scratches all over the exterior and the interior seating was pretty nasty. After driving the car we went into the dealership to go over how much they'd give us for our car and how much we could get the used car for. This is where things got frustrating. First we had to give them all our financial info and employment history which isn't really necessary to find out how much they'd give us for our vehicle and how much they were gonna sell the used one for. Then we had to wait for the salesman to go get the papers and go over them, which took considerably longer then we would have liked. Next, they took our car to the Toyota dealership next door to see how much they would give us for it as a trade in. Once they got back with our car, back to the office they went to figure out all the little details of pricing which again took way longer then necessary. When the salesman finally returned, he put down a piece of paper to go over pricing. Both me and my husband were really confused at first because the numbers didn't make any sense. They were offering us 22,000 for our used Toyota highlander with only 34000 miles and in great shape and trying to get us to buy their used 2010 Subaru forester with 58000 miles on it for 20,000. First off, both my husband and I left feeling insulted that they would think we would make a deal like that. We couldn't figure out why they had wasted so much of our time, when we specifically stated we wanted to sell our vehicle to get rid of our car payments not find something of equal value to trade ours for. Second, the Subaru was in horrible condition and 20,000 for that car is just ridiculous. Third, we had told the salesman we were hoping to get around 26000 for our car as a trade in and later he told us that's what they would probably sell it for, which is even more of an insult since they were only going to give us 22000, making them a 4000 profit and god knows how much they'd make off the Subaru if we were dumb enough to make that deal. And finally the lovely cherry on top of all of this is that today just for fun, I checked to see if the car was listed on their website yet and it was for the sale price of 19000. Rude! In my world, there's nothing more stressful than buying a car. After months of researching, test driving, and attempting to purchase vehicles from pushy, disrespectful salespeople, I happened to wind up at Capitol Subaru in Salem because of a specific new car I'd seen on their website. From the moment I walked in the door, to the time I drove away with my new 2015 Forester, my time at Capitol was nothing but easy, comfortable, and professional. I worked with Jackie Hartford, and it was a breath of fresh air. She was patient as I tried to jump through the various car-buying hoops, never pushed me to do anything I didn't want to do, and spent a lot of time going over the features of my new car with me before I left. I've never written a Yelp review, and while I was buying my car I kept telling myself that THIS was the kind of service that warranted that kind of public response. This is the second Forester I've bought from Capitol Subaru - I traded in a 2014 for a 2017, same color, same interior, none of my friends will know it's a new car if I don't tell them! I "upgraded" because of the new, redesigned electronics for the GPS, radio, CD, etc. I loved everything else about the 2014, but I was REALLY frustrated with the confusing and complicated electronics system. I also wanted the blind spot warning mirrors available with the 2017, so... As far as the dealership is concerned, I tell all who will listen (and probably some who don't care!) that this is the best and nicest dealership I've ever dealt with, and I've owned a lot of cars! The people have been fabulous, and I've felt like part of a big family from the minute I bought my first Forester. The facility itself, including the waiting room, is comfortable and welcoming. (The free popcorn ain't too bad either!) Most of all, I have to say it's a pleasure and a relief to feel trusting and comfortable with a car dealership and not feel I have to keep my guard up so I won't be taken advantage of.
