Was craving brunch food and stopped by for the first time to try a waffle. We couldn't decide on sweet or savory so we got one of each and split them. I don't think the savory waffle trend is for me unless just chicken and waffles but all the toppings and oil from the chicken tenders made the waffle greasy and unsatisfying. I've been literally DYING to try this place, so I came here after work on a Monday around 10pm. I'm a plain Jane so I was really skeptical about the offerings, because they seemed like a bit much. As you can guess, I opted for the cap n crunch chicken and waffle (half size for $5). It was sooooo good! My waffle and the chicken tenders came out hot and fast. I really wish I had gotten the full size. The staff was friendly and they even brought me out a cup of water when I didn't even ask for one (I thought that was really sweet). Downtown Richmond's waffle headquarters is located a stone's throw from RVA's Capitol! Go on a Sunday! Free parking!! Tiny little shop that you will smell before you see it!! The delicious aroma wafts down Main St. so just follow your nose! Heavenly sweet scent envelopes your nostrils and smacks you in the face as you enter this diminutive shop. We must've said "Mmmmm" a dozen times! It wasn't crowded when we got there about noon and we snagged a small table right away. Seating was tucked away in every available space, counters with stools at the window and by the bar, tiny tables and chairs in every corner. I wouldn't bring a group because seating might be tricky for a large party. It's a chill, no frills, casual spot that got more crowded as the day went on. By the time we left, the line was out the door! We we greeted by a gregarious, smiley young lady who was more than happy to spend some time with us on the menu. She pointed out her favorite waffles and most popular waffles! We went with the Chicken and waffles with Captain Crunch dusting and a spicy syrup & the Grandma, which was a waffle with chicken, eggs, strawberries and blueberries. It looked like we were in for a treat! We ordered the 1/2 size after the waitress told us that the portion would be plenty for us!! We no sooner got our tea and coffee, and out came our food lickety split! So the waffle was delicious! Perfectly browned, fluffy and buttery. The chicken could have been better. The batter was very hard. Good luck cutting that chicken strip with those flimsy plastic utensils. My friend's waffle had thawed frozen fruit on it, but the eggs were good! Wanted to get out of the Hampton Roads area and we love Richmond so we looked up a brunch place while on our way. Capitol Waffle Shop was something that I already had booked marked and was going to give them a try. With all the changes that have been going on lately we try not to get out too often, but didn't want to eat outside or in the car while out. Capitol is opened for limited dining with reduced seating along with all the safety requirements needed now. Didn't have to wait too long to be seated and the service was nice. I just had the best time here. The vibes in the shop itself were amazing but so was the food! As someone with a gluten allergy, finding places to eat can sometimes be challenging. I stumbled upon Capitol Waffle shop and my expectations were beyond exceeded. The waffle had great taste and texture, and all the fixings were perfect! Decently priced waffles with a wide variety of flavors and toppings. I ordered the Chicken Ranch BLT Waffle, half size for ~$6. It was perfect for me since I wasn't too hungry but would recommend the full size if you're expecting a full meal. I ordered it to-go and by the time I got back to my hotel, about 10 minutes later, the food was lukewarm and the waffles were slightly soggy from the sauce but they were still good! Recommend you dine at the restaurant so it's fresh/hot. That being said, the restaurant itself is very small and only has about 5-6 tables but when I came in (mid-day Saturaday), it was pretty empty. Nice little spot with an artsy vibe. The food took a little long to be served but it was decent when it arrived. I got a waffle with egg, strawberries, blueberries and bacon bits on it along with powdered sugar. I would have loved to have more than 2 tea spoons of egg to eat and a bit more powdered sugar too. It had a lot of bacon on it too which kind of took away from the meal. Overall, a nice atmosphere and tasty food. It felt more like a taste testers paradise than a meal only because of the limited portions of egg (in my opinion only). The bit of egg I tasted was really good which is why I wanted more I guess. When I was in college, the only time I woke up before 11:00 AM on the weekends was to get waffles at the dining hall on campus. To me, waffles are one of the best breakfast / lunch / dinner foods. So when I walked by a sign including the word "Waffle", lunch had already been decided. [Update]: The Soft Opening period ended on September 5th and they are now officially open. The menu has been slightly adjusted and prices on Special waffles dropped $1. They were $6 during Soft Opening, $5 now. Original review has been updated below. --Food: One thing that is clearly advertised on their board outside, their menu, and inside chalkboard is that they offer both Sweet and Savory toppings. On my first visit I decided to try one of each; a Build Your Own with Blueberries / Whipped Cream / Powdered Sugar, and the Coney Waffle which had Chili / Queso / Crispy Onions / Hotdog / Jalapenos. The BYO one was everything I expected; a tasty, sweet waffle base with fresh tasting blueberries and just the right amount of whipped cream. While it may be a safe option in the land of waffle possibilities, it's also my favorite and go-to at most places. Theirs did not disappoint. The waffle is a little thin, a little small, but the right amount of crisp. I did wish it was a little bigger, but I had another waffle to get to after this one anyway. I'm not certain I've ever had a savory waffle before, outside of fried chicken alongside a waffle, so the Coney was an experience. It was quite tasty and everything worked well. I will say this one tasted less like a waffle and more like a sandwich (or in this case, hotdog). I'm sure in the land of savory waffles, this is bound to happen as the towering heap of toppings outnumber and outweigh the small bready waffle base below. Anyway, this one was good too. Their menu boasts some incredibly interesting sounding items. There are things like a Big MacWaffle, which I got on my second visit, which has ground beef, fried onions, pickles, cheese, and 1000 island dressing. This one was pretty good! They also had a Chicken Wafco which was a waffle with fried chicken and captain crunch along with a side of maple chili sauce. This one was good tood, but was overall unimpressive for some reason. Refer to the chalk board picture I uploaded if you want to find some basic toppings to create a "normal" waffle if that's what you're into as well. They have some classics like strawberry syrup, chocolate, and caramel. They also have some grab and go pastries and coffee as well. I was told you can get whatever kind of toppings you like on the pastries if you like, which seems neat. --Cost: The problem I still have with Capitol Waffle Shop, even after their official opening and $1 price drop from their Soft Opening, is that they're a touch pricey for their size. BYO waffles with up to 3 toppings are $4 each and the special items are $5. Don't get me wrong, the waffles are quite good, but it just feels a little high for how small they. (They're about the size of a piece of bread.) It's somewhat more manageable if you think of it as a $10-$15 lunch, which isn't too unusual for the area, but for small waffles they aren't cheap. I feel like I would have a less of a problem if the waffles costed a little more but were larger portions (most home waffle makers produce either a pair of waffles this size in one bake, or a Belgian style waffle about twice as large). --Service: The staff member (owner?), Brad, who was working there seemed like a really cool guy with a good vision for his business. I talked to him for a while about his plans for the shop and they include extended hours, extended menu, and a delivery service. I saw online that he or the group he works with also owns The Luncheonette (which I've had bookmarked on Yelp for a while now), so running a business isn't something new to them. In terms of food service, the waffles came out reasonably quick and hot. --Atmosphere: The place is still mostly decorated like the Sugar Shack Coffee and Donuts that was there a couple years ago. It's pretty hip. There aren't a whole lot of seats (maybe 4 tables) but it somehow doesn't feel cramped. Perhaps this changes during peak times. Currently it is laid out to best be a take out location, which works for people on the go. --Overall: I love waffles and the whole concept behind Capitol Waffle Shop. It's fun to build your own and there are some incredibly interesting waffle creations you can end up with. I thought the waffles were tasty and it's in a great location for people working in the downtown financial district. My only qualm is the price tag. I don't believe that it will become part of my normal lunch rotation, but I know I'll be back. If you're a waffle fan, definitely give it a go. read more

My friends and I were looking for some food after a night out and came across this gem of a place that was open until 3am! I thought we would have to resort to snack food so I was super happy to find a place that was open. The place is pretty small but seating wasn't really an issue since it was so late. I had a half order of chicken and waffles and it came out pretty quickly. The chicken was nice and crisp, which was a pleasant surprise given we came around 2am. I had no qualms with the waffle either. My only very small gripe is that they sprinkled the powdered sugar on top of the chicken instead of the waffle, which is what I would've preferred.
