Popped in here with 12 friends during a day trip to Baltimore, and they were more than accommodating! We all really enjoyed our experience at Captain James and left stuffed. We ordered it all - for food, we got oysters, hushpuppies, large cabs, crab cakes, steamed spiced shrimp, and fries on fries on fries (we even got chicken fingers). In the drinks department, we ordered orange crushes, watermelon/cucumber crushes, and tons of beer. It was all delicious! The crabs especially were much larger and more flavorful than other crab places I've gone to in DC (cough cough Quarterdeck). Ordered the all you can eat crabs for 2 ($29.99 pp) fries, mussels ($5 at hh), & Coronas ($3 at hh). I was kind of skeptical of the crabs due to previous reviews, but once they arrived I was sooo happy and couldn't wait to dig in! They were pretty big, filled with meat & drenched in Old Bay just the way I like them, I can't complain! Had heard so much about this place and had never gotten anything but take out prior to this visit so decided to try the crabs. Well let me say what they call X-large Jumbo could have fooled me. A dozen at $101 was sorta pricey to me but I kept an open mind...I shouldn't have, the crabs were small for the price not what I would call jumbo maybe large...maybe, the steamed shrimp were awesome and the wings were fantastic, but i could have wings and shrimp anywhere I came for crabs and was totally disappointed. For the $187 for 2 people that I spent I could had a better experience. Also $27 in automatic gratuity just added insult to injury. The AYCE blue crabs were fantastic and our service was also superb! I was little skeptical as it seemed many had banged on the Captain for their service! I left a star off for charging for water. This place hit all 3 requirements. Woohoo. We ordered a dozen medium crabs, clams, mussels, shrimps, calamari, fries and hush puppies. I got to try the most popular beer in Baltimore the Nutty Boh. So much fun cracking crabs with the wooden hammer. It gets real busy at 7pm. So come here early to get the nice seats. The waiter is friendly. Give us lots of buckets, napkins and water. Wish they offered wet hand wipes. But we all got to wash our hands in the bathroom after feasting on the delicious crabs. Highly recommend this place when visiting Baltimore. To cut to the point, I much prefer LP Steamers. Truth be told, I should actually attempt to make one more trip down to DC to try the crabs at some restaurant called Pier-something. For one, my NoVA (Northern Virginia) friends have said you can get female crabs (something you cannot get in Maryland) which taste way better than male crabs due to the flavor of the crab roe in the shell but here's the biggest seller: they got at least half a bushel if not a full bushel of 75% female crabs for $40. Forty dollars! Forty dollars is what I paid for this place to get a 1/2 pound of shrimp and 3 large blue crabs! #ripoff Alright, I am not counting the two ears of corn but it's corn. I bought corn today at $0.19 each. Even if you added tax and tip on that, it won't even amount to a dollar. But let's get on with the ratings: Steamed Old Bay Blue Crabs PROS -not overly flavorful (i.e. coated with Old Bay seasoning) -decent amount of meat (for being Blue Crab) CONS -way way way too expensive: it was about $51/lb for the medium (or large) blue crabs that they offered and I believe $71/lb for the largest sized crabs. The smallest crabs don't have enough meat to be worth the work. Half-pound Steamed Shrimp PROS -good flavor -moderate quantity CONS: -not enough to share for two. I honestly could have killed a half-pound on my own which was why I got the two ears of corn and my friend the two glasses of beer. This place isn't so bad that it deserves 2 stars but it definitely does not deserve 4 or more. Perhaps the all-you-can-eat crabs deal may be better? I may try that if I have the time before I head out of B'more. read more

My friend and i were there for dinner after spending the day at the hospital. we decided to treat ourselves and get the all you can eat crabs. they cost 31.99 per person. OK, could care less about the price of the crabs, the 31.99 is dooable.. however. When you get only 2 hours to do the all you can eat, and they waitress literally is gone and you get exactly 2 trays containing 1 dozen little bitty crabs in 2 hours, this is unacceptable. then the sticker shock hits you when you get the bill. For a party of 2 just me and my friend, we were auto charged for the tip which turned out to be 16$ WTH???? although she was charming the whole 2 times we saw her in our 2 hour visit she did nothing to be guaranteed a 16 dollar tip. Great spot on the water with a no frills eating experience. Outdoor picnic tables with paper covering, some buckets, some mallets, and some old bay seasoned crab-- the perfect Maryland experience. As someone who goes crabbing in the summer, I can tell you that the different sizes make some difference, but if you're an efficient crab picker, it's not worth the huge jump in price. $36 for a dozen is a decent deal, but $49 per dozen for the larger ones... So my friend and I had dinner there in early June 2020 and everything was great. Being from the DMV to us the crabs were quite pricey at $85 a dozen for regular males. But they were very good so we decided to try the restaurant out one more time on Friday September 4. Huge mistake, once again the crabs were $90 a dozen and the taste as though they were pre potted in tap water to keep them from perishing overnight. Another thing I noticed was that they were not Maryland crabs. Like come how difficult can it be to get Maryland crabs this time of the year. The weight staff were pleasant however very young and they seemed to all congregate at the cash registers. I believe that we saw our waiter 3 times in the 2 hour that we were there. Once to take our drink orders of two Pepsi's (I had to request a glass of ice because they were shelf temperature) Second time was to bring the food and the third time was because we had to ask another server for our check.. As I patiently waited for the check, the server decides to saunter over to our table and hands me a check for $133.00. Like wtf did we order. Anyway we noticed that the 18% gratuity was added to the check. Really for two people, a dozen of crabs (I only are three), 6 buffalo wings that appeared to come from a malnourished chicken from possibly behind Lexington Market somewhere. Anyway I inquired about the pre.added tip. And the waiter says, "oh we do that for people who spend over $75"! Like wtf? Well clutch my pearls. You have got to be kidding me? So I nicely asked (trying not to be ratchet). Okay. I did give him a little hands on the hips and talk to the hand action with the neck roll. He tells me., " but my bad we can take it off if you like". Oh we like, heck yeah we like. So he did remove the gratuity of 18+ %( close to $20 bucks) from the check. So I.say all this to say. Please check your tab before you just dish out the money. I think I would have been okay with paying that high tab, if the crabs were on point and or if there was a sign that mimicked something like. Medium crabs were reasonably priced at $36/dozen, with half-dozens available. Remember that eating crabs is a slow and labor-intensive process, so don't come here starving because it will take you a long time to get full. I also tried the steamed clams and they were great. The limited menu also included calamari, crab soup, and corn-on-the-cob. There was a full bar attached. Where the this place loses a few points is not having free tap water or a soda fountain, as everything is sold by the bottle or can. Also unforgivable is not having fresh-brewed iced tea (sorry, but canned Lemon Brisk does not cut it). But the crabs were great and the atmosphere was a lot of fun. read more

The waiters could not have been more uninterested and since most of them wore their college of Ravens apparel I figured they were probably distracted about the games going on in the City that day. The crabs were 3/4" layered with Mc-Cormick seasoned on the outside but very bland on the inside. I would have rather if they were soaked in the seasoning and allowed some of it to sip. Fun background music and company always helps the cause, but make sure to get here around 6 to beat the rush. You are given a selection of S, M, L crabs per the dozen and then they so gently plop them right in the middle of your tables. Be prepared to work for that meat, but when you get to it, it is very good and moist. A mountain of fresh Gulf crab covered in Old Bay. It was a literal feast! They were also tiny and covered in old bay...it's a day later and my hands still smell. By tiny, I mean that each crab was about the size of my palm. What really got me about this place is that they automatically charge 18% gratuity on any bills over $70, and they charge $1.25 per bottle of water without asking you if you'd just like to drink some tap water. Come for the good value on the AYCE crabs, but just know you'll have to work for them and you'll be paying a bit more than the advertised $31.99/person. read more

Our server was Angela T. She clearly knew that because we had 5 people and 2 kids she was going to get an automatic 18 %. She did not earn 18% by any stretch if the imagination. I understand the policy but in this case it was not warranted. Angela was sitting at another table and walked by our without ever turning her head our way. I literally had to call out to get her attention. We didn't have enough mallets so I asked for more but never got them so some if us couldn't eat crabs. Her tables were all over the place which leads me to believe she was just grabbing tables as they came in but didn't care about taking care of them or doing a good job. The crabs were nice but they wee pretty small for the prices. They seemed more annoyed when we were trying to order more stuff. Overall it wasn't the best experience for how much we have paid. We ended our Fourth of July weekend with a day trip to Baltimore for some finger-lickin' good crabs. We wound up at Captain James Crab House because we wanted to walk around Fell's Point afterward and it's only a two minute drive down the road. On a Sunday afternoon, the place was reasonably crowded, so the vibe was very relaxing. We were greeted by very nice waitstaff who took our order and answered all of our questions since we were relatively new to the crab scene. We ordered a 1/2 pound of extra large crab (they come in jumbo and extra large) two ears of corn and some beer. You really couldn't get any simpler. The corn came out UNSHUCKED and we had to shuck it ourselves, which was pretty fun! It was a little bizarre that our waitress planted a big bottle of "Parkay" on our table...I kind of wished for real live butter, but this is a no frills kind of joint. The crabs were realllllly tasty and plenty for two people for lunch. Overall, a great experience on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. My only complaints are the butter and they don't offer any real butter for the crab, but I think that is a Southern thing I grew up with. We westcoast visitors purposedly form our Baltimore crab trip to this restaurant to try out their all-you-can-eat famous Baltimore blue crabs! We were all very pleased with our choice :) For the price of $29.99 (Mon-Thurs only), you can savor the lovely blue crabs within 2 hours' time period...what a deal!!! The server brought us bucket after bucket of MD crabs and we have our stomach filled with the blue creatures...Baltmore-style lol :) We also had a great view of the Inner harbor as they have a large outdoor patio seating! Very disappointing and I will not return. I dined there with relatives a couple days before the Labor Day weekend. I'm from Baltimore and I know how blue crabs are supposed to taste. The crabs they served tasted terrible and the meat stuck to the inside of the shell. I pounded on the claws but the mallet wouldn't break them. The shells were like plastic. The crabs were cold when they brought them to the table. We asked for hot crabs and the waiter came back with some that must have been thrown in a microwave because they were too hot to handle. To add insult to injury, they added an exorbitant gratuity to the bill and we were only a party of three. As we were leaving we saw a rat in the parking lot. I came here last Wednesday night with two girlfriends for their All You Can Eat Crabs Happy Hour. It was the perfect night to sit outside, low humidity, still warm, with a nice breeze. The music was low key and beach-y, perfect ambiance and view of the harbor! The corn and Maryland crab soup were both good. The crabs were ok, they started out small and empty - which was weird, but by the end of the night we were getting much larger crabs. They were fresh and hot, delicious!
