During my visit in Monterey, I wanted a quick coffee and brekky before hitting the road. Captain + Stoker is located on a corner near some baseball fields. Parking was a little scarce on a weekday morning but I found a spot about a block away. If you see lots of bikes, you're in the right place. Inside is very clean and a cross between hipster and rustic. There's some spaced out indoor seating. Side note - their bathroom is one of the most pristine I've ever seen in a dining establishment, bravo! The staff was very welcoming as well. I got an iced oatmilk vanilla latte. Good flavor and not too sweet, but wish it had more ice. I also got some peanut butter banana toast (dusted with honey and cinnamon). One slice was very filling. The bread was pretty dense and they did not skimp on the peanut butter or banana slices in the slightest. The honey does make for some sticky hands though, beware. Very good experience, looking forward to another visit when I'm in the Monterey area. read more

They have, hands down, the best latte I've had in the USA. They also typically have a long line going down the sidewalk. Is it worth it? If you have the time, it is. Before going, I read the good & bad reviews and was concerned with the reviews that mentioned the coffee was too acidic. But I like a good bold black coffee, americano with no milk and black nitro, so figured I could handle it. However, the not so good reviews about the coffee are consistent with my pallet. It's flavor is interesting, acidic and sour. There's a strong tannin that lingers on the pallet that I've never experienced this with coffee, but have with bad wine. Note: my review of the taste of the coffee is subjective. It was clear that this joint is popular and people like it because of how busy it was and I drove by it a few times and it was busy then... so it wasn't for me, but def works for many others. read more

We found this place on yelp and decided to stop by. I decided to stop by. The place is seriously so beautiful inside. It looks like it use to be an old garage but it was converted. It's very open and the air flows inside. The decor is also so nice. The have this gorgeous table huge community table inside. The coffee here feels a little too acidic for my taste and not sure why but the workers felt a little aggressive when telling us to leave right at closing (totally understandable but wish we had a chance to finish up beforehand). I got the undertow which is vanilla syrup at the bottom (housemade and so delicious with real vanilla specs), macadamia milk, and espresso. It's in a beautiful area with a large seating area with huge windows that let in a lot of natural light. Came here when visiting Monterey on a Saturday afternoon around 2pm. There was actually no line & we walked right up to the counter. The gal helping us was nice enough & helpful with ordering. Um yeah, we hit Captain + Stoker every single day during our visit up the Central coast. We stayed in Pacific Grove for 5 days and drank our weight in coffee. The iced latte with macadamia milk was so delicious. It tasted sweet and like macadamia nut syrup without the guilt. We regularly ordered the house drip + a latte to go. Their peanut butter bombs were also delicious and coconut forward. Be sure to pick up a bag of beans (or 5 like we did). Dropped in on our way home and wanted to grab a quick bite to eat. The lines was pretty long when we got there but moved quickly. The vanilla lattes were just ok. We've had better and they also didn't label which coffee only had one shot of espresso and which one was the regular one. I'm sensitive to caffeine so not knowing which one was which didn't allow me to really enjoy because I was scared of feeling too jittery. The avocado toast though is what saved it. It's a huge portion compared to what you would typically see at other coffee shops. Loved that they provided the limes because I think it added just a bit more oomph to the toast.
