Captains Quarters is a nice higher end seafood establishment nestled off the Ohio river in the city of Louisville located off of river road. I had variates this establishment a handful of times probably a decade or so ago. I always liked the food and they had a very beautiful interior off memory. Recently my oldest daughter made her 8th grade confirmation and it was during lent so we needed a place for a large party that was a primarily seafood Restaurant not too far from the cathedral downtown. So captains quarters Immediately popped in mind as a perfect place. I called and spoke to the event cordiantor who was very kind and accommodating . Explained our situation of needing reservations for a large group of different families and how time frame was kinda later and not guaranteed (depending if service ran long). So she set us a reservation of 40 for 8:30pm that night. The families came in at staggered times the night of as some stayed back for after mass pics and others headed out immediately to make the reservation time. The staff was well prepared and had our area all set and ready. My memory serves me well as this place still is very elegant and beautiful both on the exterior and the interior. The outdoor patio exterior is beautiful and has cool photo ops of a huge lit up tree, a captain statue, a ship wheel, and a Pegasus statue. It also has amazing river views. This actually made for amazing post confirmation photo ops and the kids adored it and had fun with it. The food and service here also was as great as I remembered. Kind and attentive staff and top notch food. I did start my evening with a Kentucky lemonade which had a great flavor and was a nice smooth alcoholic beverage. For our entrees between 40 we sampled the menu quite well. I'll stick with just my families orders for the review. I personally got the Kentucky hot brown. When thinking back on this place that is the dish I remembered. It was as good as I remembered. Very traditional hot brown style with flavorful monray sauce, tasty turkey and crispy toast and bacon. Very good meal. My wife was a better catholic than me that lent Friday night and got the Seafood trio. She said it was amazing and she loved her meal. My daughters got a ranging variety of foods. This includes a hot catfish sandwich which my oldest loved and I personally thought was unique and different. Think a Nashville hot chicken sandwich except with cat fish and not chicken. The younger ones all got a personal pan pizza which was very good as I got one slice of it. Pretty good for a seafood place that does not specialize in pizzas. My 7 year old got the fish planks or fish sticks and said it was good. She also snatched up some pizza. All of us sampled I believe off others on our celebration party from the peel And eat shrimp to a hummus and bread app. Overall we were very satisfied. Our whole party here had a great visit from the food to the service and to the decor and atmosphere. They were patient with us all and didn't rush and it really made for a perfect spot to celebrate a big event in our children's life. I not only will come back as a regular customer during normal lunch and dinner visits, but I'll plan feature events and parties here as well. I have 4 other daughters who will one day make a confirmation downtown at the cathedral and I'm sure I'll vouch to the other families of how well this experience was. read more

Sea captives will captivate your heart with its great service, drinks, and views! My friend made a reservation for 11 and I am so glad he did as the restaurant was pretty full when we arrived. They gave us a long table in a separate area up a few stairs. Our waitress got our drink and appetizer orders and advises us that the kitchen was moving slow so to put in our food orders as well. For our appetizers we got a couple of the spinach dips and an order of wontons. The spinach dip was average, but the wontons were so good. Had a nice crunch, a good amount of cheese, and the dip was super cool and creamy! To eat I got their salmon with broccoli and instead of the rice I got the grits. Now the food had a great flavor, but was so overly salty I could barely eat it. I did my best to add some pepper and mix it up, but I made it through about half of it and could not eat anymore. It was not just me as a couple of other people mentioned the same thing. Maybe this was just normal for this restaurant? Maybe someone was just really salt shaker happy? Whatever the case the good was good, but the salt could've been toned down a lot. The best part of this restaurant was the view as it is right on the Ohio River. The view, especially at sunset, is gorgeous. The sun twinkles off of the water giving you amazing and tranquil pictures. They have tons of chairs outside so you can sit, sip, and enjoy the evening. We had family from out of town and went to Captain's Quarters Sunday afternoon for the view, the atmosphere and a great time. The food was decent but the service was horrendous. Our waiter was virtually non-existent. It took us 45 minutes to get our checks. Then when they brought him back they only brought three of the four. We had to make inquiries of several managers trying to figure out what happened to the fourth check. They never found it. They never found the credit card. They offered no explanation. The only consolation was is they did comp our entire meal. read more

Good Evening, I'd like to inform you on the service I , along with the rest of my dinner party experienced on September 27,2025. We had a large dinner party which required 2 servers. The servers were Jade .believe his name was Kelvin. Observing my interaction with Jade and Kelvin, became a stark reminder of why I don't like to come to establishments anymore. Jade, was hostile, rude, aloof, her tone, demeanor & body language was evident she didn't want to there, she wasn't empathetic, nor was she exhibiting the standard of any server in the hospitality industry I'm accustomed to. The other server his language was a definite barrier of him understanding orders, his lack skill or training of serving a large party created a barrage of incomplete or missing menu items, as well misinterpretations of ordered items , & things just brought to the table . Pretty much seeming as if they'd throw something hoping it'd stick. Our drink orders , appetizers, & main course dishes were solely meet with disappointment. Jade, refused to assist as well as looking , sounding & acting annoyed. Kelvin, , was surely lost , not only in language barriers but serving a large party. I ordered the mahi melt, which I've had before. Generally it's been a good sandwich but this last time we dined there the mahi was extremely overdone (dry) and not exactly fresh tasting. Met a group of friends here for dinner on a Monday night. Although the weather was gorgeous we sat inside - no tables were available outside. Our waitress was overwhelmed with having to serve so many table. Needless to say she was slow in taking orders and would disappear for lengthy amounts of time. I have to start by saying my server Mattie was amazing. She gave me info on dishes told me her favs and suggested something's according to what I told her. She also was fun to just chat with and gave me an all around great customer experience. On to the food...I orders the Cajun chicken Alfredo. I'm not a huge Italian good guy so when I order some it has to be really good. This dish was very good. It has a great creamy sauce that isn't spicy just to be spicy. It has just enough kick to it for you to notice it. The chicken and noodles were cooked perfectly. I also had the bourbon bread pudding. This is a must have if you go here. We went to Captain's Quarters today for a birthday lunch. I realize now that we never mentioned we were there for a birthday, so I'm not sure if they have any options/complimentary birthday treats to help celebrate. This was my first time dining here and I had read previous reviews about the igloos for outside dining so I reserved one for our party. It's $25 for the reservation and each igloo seats 6 comfortably. We remained nice and toasty, thanks to the heater inside of the igloo. Previous reviews indicated that at one point the igloos were equipped with some sort of Google device but I assume could be used to either play music or have communication with your server, but this was not the case today, which was mildly disappointing to not have all the amenities after paying for the rental. It would have been a nice touch. I imagine that at night with the lights on the igloo that it provides a nice ambiance. While I had a good time, largely due to the great company, it was a bit of a let down when compared to previous igloo experiences I have had. I actually didn't have anything from the cocktail menu, instead several of us opted to ask for mimosas (some with OJ and some with pineapple juice), these were not listed on the menu but were enjoyable). I thoroughly enjoy my food. I had the brussel sprouts (as an app since it's unavailable as a side), coffee smoked brisket (omg so freaking tender). I tasted my parents food as well, my mom had hot brown that was delicious and my dad had the cod filets and the flavor was out of this world. I'll say there's not a lot of flexibility when ordering as we attempted to make a few substitutions but were unable (which we found slightly unreasonable especially when willing to pay for adjustments). Pretty sure we'll be back, especially when warmer go enjoy the view of the beautiful arena. Stopped in here the last weekend of August. This is a very popular spot especially during summer. We had to wait about 20 mins. This allowed us time to grab a drink at bar and find a seat by the water. We sat in a nice spot on deck. I ordered the CQ lemonade cocktail. We ordered the green chili and cheese wontons for an appetizer they were tasty. My mom and I shared the seafood trio. Crab cake was the best part, salmon was cooked a little too long but the pineapple salsa helped. Grilled shrimp more so than blackened shrimp. Special events have been tricky during the time of COVID, so when it came time to plan a retirement celebration for one of our colleagues, significant thought was put into the details. As Captains Quarters has bountiful outdoor seating to allow for social distancing, as well as a top notch view, it was the selected location for the festivities. Although this should have been an event close to perfection, there were several issues surrounding the service and food that made it slightly less so. Unfortunately, it was raining exuberantly on the night of the event, and there are no covered outdoor seating options. After some initial confusion by the staff, we were offered a back-up option in a private meeting area. This did not provide quite the degree of social distancing or the view, but did at least allow for privacy for the celebration. Our serving staff was personable and knowledgeable about the menu, but not as attentive to details as I would have expected. Specific examples include: 1. Asking three times what type of cheese one of our party desired on her Harrods burger (cheddar), then delivering it with American, and without the added bacon that had been requested. 2. Collecting empty plates with the same hand that was holding used flatware, which resulted in dirty forks and knives peeking in and out of our conversation. 3. Asking how many slices of key lime pie we wanted (three, and it was DELICIOUS), but delivering only two, and acting surprised when we reminded the server that we had asked for three. There are several vegetarian options on the menu, including 4 appetizers, 2 salads, 1 pizza, and 1 burger. All the sides are vegetarian as well, which is a thoughtful touch. When reviewing the menu, I was enamored by the description of the shrimp and grits: "sautéed Creole-seasoned jumbo shrimp, on a bed of our White Cheddar grits, served with sautéed garlic & arugula." I asked if I could substitute the Impossible Burger patty for the shrimp, and was told yes. The eagerly anticipated dish arrived with the burger crumbled on top of the grits, topped with a bit of garlicky greens, but without any seasoning or sauce. It was also cool, rather than warm, which I was not expecting. The flavor was okay, but not something I would order again, and not for the $19 price. Overall, Captain's Quarters was okay. But okay should never be good enough, especially for the celebrations that mark life's great achievements. read more

Very nice place and atmosphere. If you sit by the window you can see the river and the yacht they have that they take people out on. The employees wore masks and there was hand sanitizer around the building. They were not being mindful with seating and social distancing. We initially were sat with a table in between us and the next group. As more people came, they filled in those empty spots that would have kept us socially distant. I'm not sure if that was something they forgot or what happened. I said something to our server about how close they were sitting people. There was no table in between parties now and there was plenty of open spots around the restaurant that they could've spaced people out. Our server said she thinks they thought there was going to be a bigger party coming. No bigger party ever came. Our server was great though. Very friendly and she told us she just moved to Louisville not too long ago. I would go back just for her. She was very sweet and kind. We ordered 2 sides of Brussel sprouts and we both got the shrimp and grits. The food was cooked to perfection. The brussel sprouts were crispy enough and had loads of flavor with the Parmesan on top. The shrimp and grits, my my my they were amazing. It just wasn't enough. The serving didn't even fill the entire bowl and it was $19. There was a nice amount of shrimp included though. forgot to take a picture of my food so forgive me. We also got two of their specialty drinks that had bourbon in them. Disappointing is the keyword. For most who follow me know that I try to be fair,honest and open. Hubby wanted us to enjoy our day with a little notch up from just a quick service joint. We could have waited to sit outside to eat but it was a tad bit humid and we were hungry. Although our server kept apologizing for delays it wasn't till our entrees that we felt there was a delay. The odd thing was that only one of us got our entree initially with a "Sorry, your plate is almost ready" Keep in mind we were not at this place in the middle of a mad lunch rush. There were probably roughly 50 diners in house with 2.5 servers, 1 asst server and 1 bus boy. It's understandable that the service industry is struggling. Yet, I've been in busier restaurants with the same amount of servers yet better quality between food and service. Given that this place is expected to have some level of prestige we go back to the keyword...disappointing. Sadly, the best part of our meal was the appetizer. We had to send a plate back due to a dryness issue, which then came back out after my plate arrived. Portions, although did fill us, were about 1/4 the size of what you might obtain elsewhere for 1/2 the price. Their alfredo looked more like a mac and cheese dish than what was expected. Taste was... just ok. Nothing that I would be eager in anticipation on a return. Hats off to location and ambience. Our server was pleasant but it was obvious struggling a tad in juggling between guests. I made it clear that we weren't in a hurry. The food temperature was good but other than the appetizer, lacked in presentation. Surprisingly, my pics make the food look better than it did to the naked eye and no filters were used. We eyed others items as they arrived at their tables with piqued interest. Let's just say, we should have ordered what they were having. This is probably one of the harshest reviews I've done in...forever. Sorry, not sorry. Would I return? Not quite sure. If anything, I'd be returning for the appetizer and maybe some drinks. We made reservations for our group of 11 for 5:30. There was a little discrepancy with some information we were told when we made reservation, however we worked this part out. The experience went down from there. We had a new hire and her trainer, Devon, who waited on us. One of our diners discovered 2 pieces of hair in her meal, with one she pulled from her mouth. Of course this was adjusted off our bill. Then another diner received her meal not prepared as asked. When she notified the servers, they took it back and then she had to wait 20 more minutes to get new dish. We timed her wait. When it was time to pay, the servers automatically gave each of us a check for our meals. They had never asked if we were having separate checks, which we had wanted one but didn't object to individual checks since it was already done. Upon trying to pay with QR code, each of us received a message that our bills had been paid. Devon said our bills had to be paid thru her only and we would not be able to do QR codes. This created a new issue as something was wrong with her device. We had asked for manager on duty, Rebecca to come to our table about the hair and then also due to payment issues. She never came. I specifically went up to her myself and asked that she assist with the concerns. She said she was heading over, however never came. We were very disappointed with our experience and would not have our group back due to the lack of accountability or assistance we received. Visited on a very busy Saturday evening. We were told the wait would be almost two hours, but seating in the bar area is FCFS. We found a table in the bar area and got a text that our table was ready shortly after, so it would've actually only been about 30 minutes. The service wasn't the best, but they were busy and we chose to sit in the bar area so I guess that's expected. We ordered the pork nachos, seafood sampler, chicken tender basket, shrimp tacos, and received a complimentary order of spinach queso. Everything tasted good. read more

We were a party of 7 and they only have a couple of large tables and will not seat a party until they are all there. So once we all got there we had about a 50 minute wait since they don't take reservations for outdoors. Once seated service was good, with the exception of one of us who ordered a salad. It came without any dressing and it took a long time for the server to get her dressing. I ordered the whiskey chicken that came with mashed potatoes and a vegetable medley of carrots and onions. All of my meal was excellent and a huge portion of chicken. Others had the lime shrimp tacos, chicken tenders, beyond burger with onion rings and the fried Cid. All enjoyed their food. Large restaurant with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and ample parking. To begin with, I would give this place a 5-star rating based solely on the fact that they have the best fried cod tacos EVER. I would come back just to have them again! The reason for my 4-star review is because I ordered what sounded like a delicious cocktail and they were out of all the different types of vodka that were listed as options. I had to change my choice to a Moscow Mule and it was not good at all so I was disappointed with that. Service was good and our server was attentive. I will say, for a Thursday, they were not busy at all. Maybe because it is the winter time? I hear during the summer they are always busy. We came to Captains Quarters for a family members birthday, and it was a great location to have it at. I had been here years ago as a child, but my memory was refreshed after coming in again. First of all, this beauty of this restaurant gets 5 stars. It's so gorgeous! It's hard to believe that just last year this place got flooded! I absolutely LOVE their backyard area, where there is plenty of seating, an outdoor bar, and even their boat, the CQ Princess. And of course, that nice view of the Ohio River. The service was pretty slow, but we had about 10 people on a Sunday afternoon and the waitresses were very nice. I had their cobb salad, which was gigantic and delicious for a fair price. I would love to come back here on a warm Saturday evening, as I could imagine this would be a fun place to get some drinks and relax. read more

On 3/20 my wife and I joined a group of friends for dinner at Captains Quarters. My wife and I had the Hot Brown. It was the WORST hot brown we have ever had in eating hot browns periodically over a 50 year period. Both pieces of toast were burned black. The cream sauce covered the entire dish so I couldn't see what I was eating. The bacon pieces were also burned. The same was true for my wife's hot brown. A friend at the dinner also had this same experience with his hot brown. While the service was fine I can't believe this restaurant would serve such poorly prepared food!!!! I will certainly never ever recommend anyone come to Captains Quarters. To serve a dish in such a sloppy quality is almost unfathomable. It causes me to wonder who were the chefs that would allow this kind of food to be served to customers and expect a 20% plus tip. Rating 1* read more

The obvious draw to CQ is that they are smack dab on the river with a large outdoor bar and patio, they have great views, and they have live music! To snag a spot on the outdoor patio, you need to get there early or you will probably be stalking people for their table or bar stool. Unlike their outdoor tables, you can reserve their indoor tables, so I highly suggest that because they do get fairly busy on the weekends. I think they have pretty decent food here. I have a hard time finding anyone who serves shishito peppers here in Louisville, so I love getting those as an appetizer. read more

It was a beautiful night and I thought "let's try out the Riverside Grille". I booked a table online, and it was a 2 1/2 hour wait - which worked out just fine so we got there 30 minutes before our reservation to grab a drink at the bar and head to the river. The outside was simply beautiful, I love watching boats cruise by or dock by our seats. There was a great band playing on Saturday night too, and they sure knew what were great jams for a Saturday by the river. When we got to our table we were able to check out the menu, only to find not a lot of choices but we found a few items we wanted to try. I got the fried cod sandwich, it was huge enough to split with someone. It came with fries, which they didn't look like having great flavor but surprised to really enjoy every, single one of them. I added a skinny marg to my order, as I had just finished my riverside beer. The marg came in a tall water glass and wasn't anything special. I doubt I'd try it again.
