My tire air pressure light went on, and he came out, to personally help w the FREE air service they provide. In actuality, while I presumed I was low, due to the cold weather, he helped show me that the psi was actually too HIGH, likely from a previous (overfill). He took exactly the right amt of air out, of each tire, and was remarkably helpful, friendly, and professional. First, my first review was deleted/reported which contained detail of the numerous times my vehicle was brought to Jim for the same problem. He sold me on many unneeded repairs which never resulted in solving the real problem. He claimed the local Ford dealership was a liar when I received a 2nd opinion from them and proved that the problem that Jim told me, didn't exist. The problem was with the work he unnecessarily did on my vehicle. I gave him a year to solve the problem and he denied doing so and made me sign off on a warranty on the repair because he was tired of fixing it. Needed some exhaust work, so checked out YELP and called the obligatory friend for a reference. He says to me " you're crazy " if you don't go see Jim in FRG at Car-X. It is really hard to find an auto shop that you simply expect a truthful and reliable experience. I have been going to Car-X in Fox River Grove since the shop opened. I have some newer vehicles that only need basic maintenance. Honestly, anybody can do that. The real reason I bring all my vehicles to Car-X is because I trust Jim to keep my older vehicles going on a budget. I have a large family and we have three vehicles with over 150,000 miles. He knows that I cannot always afford to keep these vehicles perfect, so he helps me understand the priorities and keeps the vehicles safe and reliable. I called at 1:30 PM while I was passing this place to see if they could squeeze me in for a last minute oil change. (My car was in desperate need and noone else in the area seemed to have availability! ) The man who answered my call was extremely nice and stated that though they currently did not have an open bay, one should be available within 15-20 minutes and that they would work to get me through as quickly as possible. I arrived 5 minutes after the phone call and he reassured me that they would get me taken care of quickly and within minutes (definitely less than the quoted 15-20) they had wrapped up another vehicle and had mine in the garage to start working on it! I can see the technician working and man they are quick and efficient! I'm very happy with the service and plan to return for future service! read more

I am so thankful to have found an auto shop I can trust since moving up here from the west suburbs. I live in Schaumburg but will definitely drive the extra distance to take my car to Jim's shop the next time I have a problem. I called in the morning to explain my problem (which was a really unusual thing with my gas tank where the sensors were shutting off the pump every couple of seconds to the point where filling up half a tank took 10 or 15 minutes, I hadn't been able to find any answers on my own) - when I brought my car in that afternoon I learned that Jim had been researching the problem all day and had a few possible explanations, as well as some solutions, ready to go. It took one day to identify and fix the problem, and at a price that made me feel like I was stealing from them. He did some other basic checks, balanced my tires and even put a few gallons of gas in my tank! My car has been running just as it should ever since. Jim is friendly and honest, no BS about him, and he knows what he's doing. Top notch service all around. read more

I was coming here occasionally over the past few years.  My last visit was to bring my car in for a clonking noise in the rear back passenger side so I dropped it off with this specific information.  Jim called and told me it was my power steering pump and hose and he would fix it ($400).  Believing him, I said go ahead.  When picking up my car, the steering was making a whirling sound (which it wasn't doing before dropping it off) so I called him.  (While the back of the car was still making the noise).  He told me it must be a bad power steering pump so he replaced it.  About a 6 months later, I lost all power steering so I went back.  He checked the fluid and it was full (he accused me of topping it off....really)  I brought it to a shop in Chicago to figure out what was going on since I wasn't getting a straight answer.  The repair shop found out that the power steering pump was not installed properly and so the mechanic called Jim and told him of the problem.  Jim said to bring it back it in, and apologized for his mistake saying he didn't inspect it before being picked up.  He said he would replace it one more time but he wouldn't give me any warrantee on the pump because the problem really was my rack and pinion which was causing to pump to fail and was causing all the problems.  I brought it to the local dealership to have a diagnosis and they said there was no leak in the rack and pinion.  Jim called them liars and would not cover the pump.  I wouldn't have written this review if he would have stood behind his work. read more

I brought my BMW here And they did a terrible job. I just needed a belt replaced. I could tell there was a sense of confusion and they were having trouble figuring out how to replace a serpentine belt. A few weeks later my car overheated.. Why? The new belt they put on snapped, which caused the cooling system to cease, because it wasn't installed properly. After the overhearing incident I noticed my radiator was now leaking.. They offered the explanation that a leaking radiator would cause a belt to phyically break. If you have more then 3 brain cells you would know that makes NO sense. It would make more sense that an overheated radiator would create pressure that might cause a breach in the unit.. However they refused to even consider taking ownership of the issue. Went for an oil change and was told that I needed a new fuel pump - 5 hours labor and estimated over $600. Jim said I really shouldn't take this car on any long trips, which really put a crimp in our plans to drive to our son's wedding in another state the next day. Had to get another car for that trip. When we got back, I took my car in to my dealer for a second opinion about the fuel pump. He said there was absolutely no issue, and that it was terrible that someone suggested I needed an expensive repair, which was totally unnecessary. Have driven over 1000 miles since and no problems. I felt like I won the lotto. I had several other local auto repair shops quote on a rebuilt transmission or my Chrysler T&C. Most quoted approx $1600. I brought my car in here for one last quote. Turns out I did NOT need a new trans, but just needed the computer reset. The $100. Diagnosis seemed very reasonable. Car has been running great for months. I have used this Car X since they have opened and I can't say enough good things about them. They take care of the problems that my Mercury Mariner has right away and are always accurate with their diagnosis and repair. The folks who work there are always very nice and listen to you very well to resolve the problem. They always offer their loaner to me if I need it. They also service my husband's Honda Pilot and he is very particular as to whom he trusts with his vehicle. He is elated with the service they have given him. They never encourage a service that is not needed and always give an accurate price range. He has over 135,000 miles on the vehicle so we've had our share of needed repairs to know what their practices are here. I wouldn't trust anyone else. read more

My 18-year old son has an older car that has 130,000 miles on it. Over the past year we've had to replace various parts of the car, most recently, the catalytic converter. Because my son has to pay for repairs to the car himself, we are very careful about who we choose to do the repairs. Do Not Bring Your Car Here if you own a Luxury Car or Own a Car you Want to Keep Running! Technicians are Not very Knowledgeable on Luxury Cars and have Very Little Experience Working on Them! Technician forgot to tighten an oil filter during an oil change - Had most of the oil drain out of my engine while driving. They quoted me one price (in writing) for a repair job - When I came in to pick up my car the cost of the repair was $150 more! Technician replaced a seal on my car - When I picked up the car I noticed a noise and vibration - Car X Technician looked at my car and told me I needed a New Drive Shaft - Quoted me $1200! I decided to take my car to the Dealer for a 2nd opinion - They explained Car X Misdiagnosed the problem - I Didn't need a New Drive Shaft. Jim (Car X Owner) Never Called me back to discuss - He called my Husband over a week later - Gave many excuses for his staff. Don't make the mistake I did - Research who's working on your car - Go to someone who knows what they're doing. The old saying applies - You Get What You Pay For. read more
