I have been a loyal patron of Dave's for over 20 years. My first visit to Dave's was because the dealer used a laundry list of service repairs in their 30,000 mile checkup that would have cost thousands,, Dave always cuts the BS and is honest and trustworthy. Typical dealer estimates vs Dave is not even close. Anything serious should go to Dave's just like a surgeon needs a 2nd opinion.. It's worth the time and money. My brake job today cost me half of what a dealer would demand.. Plus, he often tells you why you don't need some extra service.. I love this place. It is reasonable, they have loaners, they do good work and they are completely down to earth. I called them after getting a big quote at Wheeling auto and they told me to bring my car in. They fixed my brakes - all of them (front, back, the works) for under 800 bucks ($450 less than my original quote). They gave me a loaner and they also let me know some other work that needs to be done in the future - how much it will cost and just to keep it in mind in the next couple months. This was my first time here and I went in because of the yelp reviews and the close proximity to my home. 1) Did an oil change on my new-er car- only $19? Awesome. 2) Brought in my older car because of brake, battery, and exhaust issues: It took them awhile to take a look at it because of the weekend and they were really busy. This was not a big deal for me because this is the "emergency" car when the other one has been claimed and I'm going in the opposite direction. They told me it would take awhile and I was fine with it. I also know they worked pretty hard to figure out what was causing my intermittent brake issue. I got a quote back a couple days later - talked it over with Ross, who wanted to give me a good deal, and decided to get it fixed. Got a call back the next day that it was fixed (that was fast!), and asked if they could give it an oil change too because I had to work late and couldn't make it in during their hours. Called in the next day - right before picking it up - so I could confirm the price and determine how much to bring and was told a different price by Dave (who was just back from vacation and reading the notes on the order). When I tried to understand the difference in price, he became upset with me and I with him. Ross called me back to explain that the parts were much more expensive than he initially thought. I went in to pick it up and Dave really apologized for becoming upset and Ross & Dave showed me the receipts for the parts - which confirmed that the parts were definitely more expensive. Even with the parts being more expensive to them, they reduced the actual cost to the estimate cost - which means they didn't make much to anything on this repair. I really do appreciate the apology, the willingness to work with me on the cost of the repair, and that they were able to fix my old rust bucket without breaking something in the process (which can definitely happen in as old as a car as this is -1992) It is quieter than I have ever remembered it being and starts great now. The brakes also seem to be working better and the brake "warning" light has turned off. My Lessons Learned to Myself: Next time, I will know to request an estimate with the cost of parts confirmed. (Previously I have dealt with shops that had the parts for my car on hand - so they were aware of the costs and the estimate included this cost, so it never occurred to me to ask) All in all, I will be back. They really seem to care about the customer, explaining what they did to the vehicle, and doing the right repair. Thank you! read more

Honest shop! Quality work! Swift turnaround. We were referred by a friend and were not disappointed. Our 2002 Honda Odyssey with 145,000 miles needed a new water pump and an engine mount. The final bill was about $50 less than the estimate (which was $650 less than the Honda dealership)They are honest billers. We were told that our transmission was the source of another noise we were aware of, but no hard sell to have the work done. Just told us as an FYI. This is a good old fashioned trustworthy shop and would definitely come here again. They were knowledgable and courteous. A+ read more

Dave is awesome! Honesty and Integrity are the words that best describe this shop. His work ethic is remarkable. After purchasing a used vehicle for my son, I was told by my "new car" dealer that it would require "major work" besides the normal timing belt and water pump replacement for a vehicle over 111,000 miles. Not only did Dave's team determine the actual problem (not what the dealer had claimed) but completed all requisite repairs for less than I was expecting the timing belt/water pump to cost. Let me start by saying they helped me out when I was in a bind. My car had quit running on a very cold day, and I thought I had some sort of engine or electrical problem. I was towed quickly and given a nice loaner car for the day. At the end of the day, I was told that the vehicle was checked out, and no problems found, other than it had run out of gas. Okay, my bad...pretty embarrassing. (My fuel gauge had quit working long ago, so I use the trip odometer to tell me when I need to refill. The odometer suggested I was 70 miles short of the normal "empty tank") My problem with this incident is twofold: (1) I thought I was overcharged for the gas, and (2) disrespectful treatment by the owner. The service ticket showed five gallons of gas was added to the tank, at the cost of $25 (current rate up the street $3.45). I asked Dave if the car had been run much after refueling, and he said "maybe about ten minutes...why?" I told him that after leaving his shop I filled the tank, and it took 16 gallons...when the capacity is 17. They could not have truly added 5 gallons. He changed his earlier answer, and said "well, we may have run it 30-45 minutes... so I owe you a couple of bucks." I suggested that I was owed more than that. $5/gallon?? And surely not five gallons used (etc). He then said, "well, because of your stupidity..." My fault for running out of gas, yes. But there are more appropriate ways of speaking to a customer, and - I think - a reasonable thing for him to do would be to say, "Okay, how can I square this up with you?" Unprofessional remarks he had made about another person while we were driving to the shop left a sour taste in my mouth as well. Dave's gets above average marks for what was done on the car, and bailing me out, but the overall rating plummets for the other side of customer service. read more

So I have been looking for a trusty nearby mechanic FOREVER, and I saw reviews for Dave online and was very excited to have a trusty Mechanic near me. I was having trouble with my brakes (the pedal was depressing WAY too much) so me and my brother (a mechanic) checked the rotors and brake pads and saw they were fine. This is the extent of the work we can do on the car so I brought the car in (a 1995 Toyota Camry) to Dave's. He said he would look at it and I got a loaner car. While I' m school, Dave calls my other brother (who knows nothing about cars) and tells him it will cost $800 dollars to fix the brakes. My brother gives the go ahead and I am stuck with the bill. I pick up the car and look at what has cost me $800 dollars, its turns out he had to replace the Brake Pads and Rotors (which I had inspected before and were fine) and the Master Cyclinder. I pay the bill, drive the car home and the very next day the brake light is on again and I have the exact same problem. I take it back to Dave and I also question him about the brake pads and rotors which I was charged $80 dollars a piece for while I saw them online for 25-30 dollars a piece. First, he told me that it's either he jacks up the price on parts or the price on labor, as if they was an explanation. Then he says that they don't put anything but the most premium parts on (on a rusty 17 year old car!). THEN I am told the brake lines broke and it will cost ANOTHER $300 to fix!!! I was FURIOUS, but my brakes were shot so I had to leave the car. I went home and wondered about how I was just F*#ked!! I decided to take the car back and drive it slowly to somewhere I could at least trust the mechanic( my mom's mechanic). As I took my car, he said he would have done the job for $150, but frankly, if I can't trust him, I don't care how cheap he may do it. TAKE AWAY POINTS- 1. He replaced parts that I had previously inspected to be fine- NOT HONEST 2. When asked about why those said parts were so expensive, he first explains that either he jacks up the part cost or jacks up labor cost- NOT HONEST 3. Then he changes his story to say they only put premium part on ( this is an old camry that won't last long mind you) - SHADY!!! 4. Lastly as I take my car away, he offers to do the job at half price, WHICH MEANS HE WAS SCREWING ME FROM THE BEGINNING! - I was like, "Are you F%#KING Kidding me??!!" I would also Like to add that this was Dave, THE OWNER!, that I was dealing with! FINAL STATEMENT- I don't know who the other reviewers are that are giving him great reviews, maybe family, maybe friends, but just because he takes good care of people he knows DOES NOT mean he is an honest mechanic. The fact of the matter is, If you DO NOT know HIM or CARS, you should not take your vehicle here, because you will walk in...and waddle out...because you just got F*&KED! read more

Lie after lie after lie. I took my car out of there the dealership was $400 cheaper just imagine. Lol what a joke. If you want to get ripped of go to Dave's. The best he tried telling me he was gonna call me because he found out it was cheaper ya sure. Or how about he charges double of any other garage to check what's wrong with your car. Totally Dishonest! My wife works out in the area and her car was breaking down. Misfiring and engine light on. I told her to drop it off at the nearest shop (Dave's Auto Clinic) and leave the keys in the drop box since it was after hours. I called dave and informed him that my wife dropped off our car. He took a look and informed us that it's a coil that went bad, which was my suspicion as well because our car had issues in the past with coils. Since the intake manifold had to be removed to replace the coil I suggested to replace all three coils back there. I specifically asked Dave since the manifold will need to be removed will he also replace the gaskets/seals (which is standard practice when removing the manifold). He replied with the answer "of course". Well that was BS because 6 weeks later the car starting idling low and dying out at stop lights. I brought it in to our local trusted mechanic and they did a diagnostic check. They found that the intake manifold gasket/seals were old and not new at all, therefore causing an air leak. I would have called Dave and brought it in there for them to look over but since I could not trust them at that point I figured it to be pointless. Had to dish out another $260 to our trusted mechanic to take the manifold off and install the new gaskets/seals which Dave should have done to begin with. I'll never go back to Dave's and never refer anyone to them. Another unhappy customer of Dave's, what a surprise. read more

We've been customers since we moved to Prospect Heights 24 years ago. We don't see him often because the cars we have don't require alot of repair. We have always found him to be honest and dependable. Before they had loaners, Dave would actually drive you home if you needed a ride after dropping off your car. How thoughtful and considerate is that? You don't find that kind of customer service anywhere!! We have ALWAYS gotten excellent advice and repair. Replaced coil assembly on Saturn and said part cost $350 but I found the same part on-line for about $180. Mechanic took hood release assembly apart to open hood but never put it back together, got car back with it hanging loose. When I called to see what's going on, was treated more like an annoyance instead of a customer. Not too happy with Dave's Auto. read more

Terrible shop. I took my car there before I went on vacation for an oil leak and to check to see why my ac wasn't working. I was given a quote and only wanted to fix the leak. I was told that I had to pay a diagnostic fee. Normally I would understand the fee if I wasn't having any work done, but I don't know any shops that charge a fee if you ARE having work done. Once I got past that, I went to pick up the car. I was told that the oil leak would cost $280. I get there and end up paying $455 because they did an oil change also. That didn't even upset me that much since I needed an oil change anyway, but Dave should have included that in the quote. So I get the car home and the airbag light is on.. After that, the alarm starts going off (and won't stop), the windows won't open, the top won't go down, the trunk won't open, the gas door won't open. I couldn't figure out why all this was going wrong. Then I realized that the carpets are SOAKED with water.... so soaked that all the electronics don't work. I called Dave and he told me that the car is old and the top leaked and must have gotten wet in the storms. How come it didn't leak before it went there? This is not acceptable at all since he was responsible for the car while it was in his lot. And to top it off the car is STILL leaking oil. They took my money once for fixing the squeak in my front brakes. I came back 59 days later with the problem in that front brakes. They said I needed new calipers because they were not sliding across the slides good and they charge me labor again for taking the calipers off after they charge me the first time for taking the calipers off and cleaning the slides so I paid twice the labor charge for doing the same thing except adding new calipers. I know from one of their parts suppliers the calipers only cost about $18 a piece but they charge me $65 apiece. I spoke to Dave personally about this and he disagrees about the labor charge and I beg to differ. He said it's not about the money. That's why I guess he charges almost 4 times as much for parts as what he pays for them. I feel he is dishonest and has no integrity and I would not go there again for anything. I recently was broke down not far from Dave's Auto Clinic I grew up in Wheeling Illinois and I've always heard about daves and not the best of regards but I was so close that I decided to use Dave I called him that night and asked if he can look at my car it was beginning to close (45 min til )so he said he would look at it the next morning which was fine with me I could understand that, after several calls in the morning and several non responsive and very rude conversations with the owner dave my car has it was still never even looked at by 1130 almost mid day. I am A person who normally works on his cars & I do know about cars my oil line and separated from the coupling and I had told him that and said that I had already purchased the replacement part it is in my truck for him to use. Dave sounded annoyed as if I had no idea what I was talking about and said that he would look at it and if see what the actual problem is which in this case was very obvious. so I had taking my truck and had it towed out of daves into the regular place in Wheeling that I originally should have taken it too .Dave has been rumored to be inconsiderate and shady and in my eyes the lil I talked to him confirms all rumor I've heard in the past...when somebody's car breaks down they want somebody to be a little more reassuring in a little more on point is far is trying to get you back on the road and david not provide that. read more
