I love this place. The rotisserie chicken is delicious (light years ahead of anything produced by Chirping Chicken), and features delicious, well seasoned skin that is greasy but not too greasy. The ribs are only so-so, but the chicken more than makes up for the shortcoming. And the fried rice is better than that of most other places in the area, with due respect to the local Asian joints. This is to say nothing of how reasonably priced it is. Caravan also has an eccentric WTF vibe. It is chicken with a purported Peruvian/Latin American spin, but most of the workers are Asian, as are the side dishes. Not to be missed. read more

It's been a while since I've eaten from here due to them closing down for a while and I really do hate to think about why they closed down. I stopped in for the roast chicken, white rice and beans with a salad. The restaurant was packed with eat in dinners and the carry out line was really long. It took about 15 minutes just to order and pay for my food. It took about ten minutes to get my carry out order. The prices are pretty decent, most of the carry out prices were less than $10. Your given a lot of food in the carry out orders. Two people can share one order. The chicken was well seasoned and roast really well. The rice And beans I wasn't really a fan of. Maybe because your given a lot of rice and a small portion of beans. Definitely not enough beans for all that rice. The salad consist of a lot a lettuce one carrot slice and one cucumber slice and their homemade salad dressing topped the salad. Not nearly enough dressing for all that lettuce. Comfort food at its greatest. I had 3 ribs, 1/4 chicken and the PFR. What? I needed the comforting. Anyway, the ribs were fall off the bone and flavorful - just like the chicken. I have been waiting for this place to reopen and I am so glad to say that day is here! We ( my hubby and I ) had the day off from work, and came out here for lunch and got a peek at the newly renovated place. The decor finally matches the quality of food - which if you can't guess is GREAT!! We have been SO desperate that we even tried Peking BBQ ( which was very close ) but missing.. something. Today we got our usual, Pollo Saltado ( saucy ) and a 1/2 chicken with white rice. We usually take it to go, but this time we ate in, and the experience was great! I didn't think the food could get any better, but it did! The chicken skin was crispy like it never was before and Pollo Saltado was great too. Even the little side salad was on point! And not to mention their hot sauce.. let just say, we were in heaven.. I'm still in heaven! .. and I ate there more than 6 hours ago! We were so happy it reopened, we even ordered 2 more whole chickens.. one for next two dinners, and another to share with our co-workers. And the place looks great! Better seating, better facilities, and now they have windows! It was painted a warm yellow with new chairs. They even had heaters at the front and back, which kept the place warm and inviting. The bathroom facilities were a huge improvement. Before, we would always pick up food, cause eating there wasn't all that great. When it was closed - we found ourselves coming to Astoria a lot less often. And now, I think we are going to make it a Wed tradition, to eat in. I'll even recommend having a gathering, cause before seating a group of more than 4 was somewhat awkward, if not impossible. I HIGHLY recommend all new and old customers to venture here. As someone who has frequented Caravan Chicken for over 10 years, I just had to write a review now that I'm finally on Yelp! The rotisserie chicken here is simply the BEST, and the smell alone will have your mouth watering and stomach grumbling. I have never had chicken as juicy and flavorful as I have at Caravan -- literally the chicken is never dry. It also goes perfectly with their homemade green sauce, which is never too spicy. I normally order a 1/4 chicken with pork fried rice and salad. I have also tried their ribs -- sometimes not the best, but still delicious. An added plus: you can get an entire meal for about $10! Overall, their mix of Chinese and Peruvian cuisine is simply amazing. I've "converted" so many of my friends to Caravan and every single one of them can't stop going back for more. P.S. many have made comparisons to Pio Pio, and in my opinion, after trying both multiple times, Caravan is the clear winner. read more

5 stars might be a bit too high, but it is an amazing restaurant. This cuisine is unlike any I have seen at any restaurant, except for Nuevo Jardin De China, which I have not tried yet. This restaurant is a mixture of Peruvian, Columbian, and Chinese food. You can see the menu in the photo section. I love Chinese food, but the Spanish style foods looked so much better. This place was so crowded when we went. You order off a menu just like you would at any takeout place. There is usually a long line behind the counter, where someone writes down your order. We ate in, so we just picked a table. This restaurant is very cheap and affordable for lunch and dinner. We had ordered two breaded chicken cutlets with rice and beans, and a 1/2 chicken platter. It was so much food and every bite was greater than the next. Everything was amazing! Coming back so many more times! read more

We got the 1/2 chicken platter with rice and beans, salad and yoca fries on the side. The chicken was very tender. However it was overall salty, even the meat was salty. The rice and beans were bland and the rice was a little harder than I liked. The yuca fries were very oily and it tasted like the oil they fried it in was old. Peruvian chicken - i had my fair share of rotisserie/peruvian chicken and i must say that the chicken here was extremely fresh. it tasted like it was fresh off the oven rack and not reheated and dry. the best part was how juicy and tender the chicken was. the green aji sauce was delicious, not too strong and overpowering but just right. it was perfect with the chicken. only downside was that we had to pay extra since we were doing take out. Pork fried rice - i really enjoyed the fried rice because it was flavorful but very very greasy. i guess thats to be expected since it is chinese takeout style, but i found it to be oiler than other chinese food places. also the pork was a little too dry for my liking. the amazing part of this place is how cheap the entire meal is. one whole chicken for $10 can serve about four generous servings. definitely recommend coming here for the chicken! read more

To review, a half chicken (breast, thigh, leg, and wing), a side (either fries or pork fried rice), a salad, and a teeny tiny tub of cilantro garlic sauce for dipping. SIX BUCKS. Now, I'm a big eater, but this could feed two "smaller" eaters for sure. To review more specifically: - the chicken. wow. Perfectly roasted. Not too much sauce. Moist and succulent. I'm not a dark meat fan but this dark meat kicks ass. - I got fries. You should get rice. Fries aren't great and they put them directly in the Styrofoam takeout container straight from they frier. Greasy as hell - Sauce. Just get it over with and drink it. Pay the extra 30 cents for an additional tub. - The so-called "salad" consists of one carrot slice, some chopped iceberg, and a dollop of unidentifiable dressing. What a deal what a deal what a deal. You can get a whole chicken for around ten bucks. The ideas popping into my head are endless in terms of saving time (tacos, soup, enchiladas, etc). And I promise this chicken is far superior to one you would get at Bravo or Trade Fair (and much more fresh). No delivery. I can't wait to try the Chinese food. read more

Great chicken and ribs. The sides I'm not to crazy about since they have nothing on the menu that excites me. That simply because I am Latino and have and amazing cook at home (mom) so nothing comes close to her experience or skills when it comes to Latin dishes but I have to say that the fried rice looked good although I did not try. My GF is Eastern European and enjoyed some of the sides. (Sweet plantain/Salad). Overall rating the chicken and ribs they were very well cooked and taste great. We stopped in on a weekend and there was a hell of a line and waiting period for seating but for some random reason when we went we were seated ASAP which didn't go over so well with the crowd. Long have I observed this restaurant as I walk by. It seemed to always be under construction, renovation, or closed for whatever matter. When I finally was fortunate enough to catch them between makeovers, I gave them a shot. The only other chicken place I go to in the area is Chirpin' Chicken, and I have long been sick of their super dry chicken. Chirpin's dark meat can pass as decent chicken, but the white meat is like biting into sand. Caravan presents a stark contrast to Chirpin both in preparation and satisfaction. Here the chicken is rotisserie which seals in flavor and juices better. The chicken at Chirpin is grilled. Strictly speaking, the chicken at Caravan is by far better. Maybe it's just refreshing to have a different place for a change, but you can't deny the quality. The only set back is the cash only policy, but for half a chicken and white rice for roughly $6, I can spare myself the $0.12 I would have earned back for using my credit card. read more

I've been walking past this place for close to three weeks now, always noting the line-out-the-door and delicious smells emanating from within Caravan Chicken. It looked a little dirty and I was a bit apprehensive about eating there.. and make no mistake, it's a total hole. However, I finally had the chance with my boys in town to check this place out last night. We Yelp'ed it and were sad, but not entirely surprised, that it was shut down by the DOH last April. After some pregaming, we decided to hit the Broadway bars and ended up at Caravan anyway. I ordered a 1/4 chicken and it came with either salad and pork fried rice or fries. I chose the salad and rice and it came out to 5.05. I think the half chicken was 6.50. The Peruvian Rotisserie-style chicken is tender, juicy, and delicious. It comes with a wonderful and mysterious Green Sauce that goes with the delicious Peruvian Rotisserie bird like peanut butter and jelly. The pork fried rice as a side was a nice touch, but I didn't eat the salad. I might have if I had some differing dressing at home. I have to make it back for the apparently popular Lomo Saltado, Pollo Saltado, and Salchipapas.. but the chicken is enough to bring me back.. even if I do feel a little grossed out eating in this dingy place. read more

I've been to peru. I know how they get down with that combo of Latin American and Asian fusion. It's a fine amalgamation of flavors at a very fair price point. While it seems like Caravan specialises in pollo a la brass, that flavor remains. This place is fantastic. The chicken is juicy and full of flavor. It's nothing like going to your coworkers bbq and the chicken is dry as hell. You know that chicken that goes down like chalk and is inedible without beer and tons of sauce. In fact if any of my co-workers ever had a BBQ featuring chicken Astoria I would violate and bring 5 of these chickens over. And be like ...nah only red meat and asparagus touches this grill. The green sauce adds to the already savory chicken. Mike jack said it doesn't matter if you black or white and that's true here too. The dark and light meat are both crazy. A three.three star review. I've walked by this spot for the last five years that I've been living in Astoria and just assumed it was just another one of those grilled chicken spots. But I did not realize it was actually a Chinese restaurant with some Latin-influenced grilling and cooking. What originally brought me here was the fact that menus online had show its prices to be incredibly cheap. Unfortunately, those weren't updated as the prices are now two dollars or more. On top of that you need to add tax. So what you thought may have been around five dollars may actually end up being over eight dollars. At that point if you wanted Chinese food, you might as well go get it from the many surrounding Chinese takeout restaurants. But what I ordered was not traditionally Chinese. The half-chicken that comes with pork fried rice tasted great. It was seasoned differently and the meat was juicy. It was definitely a good grilled chicken. The pork fried rice tasted fine but it was a little too greasy even for my tastes. I may actually prefer the pork fried rice from a Chinese restaurant. It also came along with a salad and some guacamole I believe. So in the end, the portion was good enough for a person and a half. But when you're looking for a cheaper lunch, it's almost a safer or at least cheaper bet to just go to a Chinese takeout unless you're really crazing some grilled chicken. The rest of their menu is almost the same as a Chinese takeout. And to add, when I had come in to order it was early and there was no one in line. A line started to form behind me and the cashier kept doing what she was doing rather than take my order. I had waited almost ten minutes before someone walked up behind her and told her to take my order. Even then she looked surprised and still took another minute or two to take my other. Simply put, if you are a fan of Peruvian food, drop your $40 half-chicken from Pio Pio and get over here. Only gripe is that the Aji sauce (crack sauce) costs extra if you are taking your food to go. The chicken is so delicious-- it's juicy and tender with delectable, crispy skin, and it doesn't taste like it's been doused with MSG like some takeout chicken. You can get a half chicken with a ridiculous amount of rice and beans and a little salad (yeah, the salad was pretty gross, but seriously, who expects a good salad from a place like this? Make your own, for cryin' out loud!) for something like $6. Alright, this is going to be controversial, but... the green sauce didn't do anything for me. Yeah, I said it! Very good food! My friend recommended this place to me and he said its the best chicken in the world. I gave it a try and yes, the chicken is delicious and juicy. But every time I tried to buy some spare ribs, the guy at the cash register always say the guy who was in front of me bought the last available ribs and there's no more. Yesterday, I saw the guy in front of me get 3 pcs of spare ribs and afterward tipped the guy at the register $5. Maybe this is why the guy at the cash register is always saying the ribs are sold out. Really great place! They have one of the most exquisite chickens I have tasted. The meat is tender and very moist. It matches the quality at Pio-Pio. It comes with a free green tangy sauce. Sister of Peking BBQ in woodside queens and just as good if not better, here's the reason why this place is better for one they still have Chinese Peruvian cooks and the other doesn't. so try the fried rice it's good and the lomo Saltado is excellent as well, it's that fusion of Chinese and Latin mixed unfortunately, I don't live nearby otherwise I'll be here daily they make good beans as well, so give them a try for good cheap comfort food. and don't forget to try the house green sauce it's to die for and makes the chicken breast more enjoyable or in the fried rice?
