Not sides, not desserts, not any other food. Service and decor were not considered either. Visiting a new restaurant in my neighborhood called La Rotisserie du Coin triggered an obsession in me to find the best rotisserie chicken in Queens. For three days last week, I ate nothing but roast chicken. To be fair, I ordered the same half a chicken every time (except Costco) during busy lunch or dinner hours. Here are my findings below with a food score (independent of price or value) and some key notes for each establishment. LA ROTISSERIE DU COIN - 4/10, Chicken was barely warm and somewhat dry. This could be due to the fact that I was the only customer at 7:45pm. The skin had some hint of rosemary and other herbs, but the meat was quite bland. Restaurant had by far the nicest decor of all the chicken shops visited. Price ($12.85) for half a chicken with two sauces was also by far the most expensive. BOSTON MARKET - 5/10, Surprisingly better than LRDC, mainly because it was warmer and juicier. Skin had a stronger flavor of spices. The white meat was still slightly dry, but the dark meat was quite good. For $9.88 you get half a bird plus two sides. PIO PIO (Middle Village) - 8/10, My favorite roast chicken for a long time and it still does not disappoint. Super tender and juicy meat, along with amazingly tasty seasoning. $10 gets you half a pollo and endless green sauce (best of any restaurant that served it). COSTCO (LIC) - 7/10, Each chicken is time stamped. So fresh and hot, the box nearly burned my hands. While not as flavorful as some, it was definitely the juiciest and most tender. Possibly the most meatiest as well. Nowhere else I tried can beat the price of $4.99 for a whole entire chicken either. ROAST & CO. - 3/10, Lukewarm and quite dry. Unfortunately the worst of my experiment. My belief is that, due to their larger menu compared to the other similar restaurants, it's hard to keep the chicken fresh. Half a bird for $13.95 comes with two sides, which were decent. CARAVAN CHICKEN - 7/10, Similar to Pio Pio, but a little less tender, a bit less juicy, and the green sauce was not as thick. Skin has a little crispiness to it that no other roast chicken had. Fantastic buy at $7.21 for half. PEKING BBQ - 8/10, Same owner as Caravan Chicken, but the seasoning on the skin has a added sweetness (cha siu sauce) added to the traditional Peruvian herbs and spices. On the day I was there, I waited 20 mins for a new batch, which produced a better result. Once again, $7.21 for half a chicken is a great deal. In the end, this experiment proved something all foodies should already know ... ... everything tastes better when it's freshly made. Unlike a steakhouse that can fire up a piece of meat upon request, rotisserie chicken takes time to prepare and becomes overcooked the longer it sits in the oven. That's why places with consistent business will always win out in this race. If I have to pick one winner based on purely taste, then it would have to be Pio Pio. However, the biggest dark horse was definitely Costco. This was a fun experience, but I don't want to see another rotisserie chicken for months. read more

I can't believe it's taken me this long to go here. The place is always packed and whenever I see a sign on a restaurant storefront claiming to be the "best" I assume it's not true but for this place...it is. I got the pork fried rice, 1/4 chicken with salad and green sauce. The rice is cooked to perfection, the chicken is seasoned and juicy, and that green sauce is to die for (get extra). I can't wait to be back for the ribs. You can tell this is an Astoria staple and I wish I found it sooner! read more

So I wanted to try a new Peruvian place and I've passed by this place plenty of times. The staff seemed friendly enough but I can see why people say to put an order in advance cuz they take their time. I ordered only one whole chicken and they are all on the spit ready to be cut but they still took 10 min to give me my order even though they weren't actively making other platters for other customers. Chicken was cut into quarters and I took it to go. It was only when I got home that I realized they are so cheap with the green sauce. I bought a WHOLE chicken and they gave me one small sauce cup. . The chicken was pretty moist except for the breast meat and flavorful but the one sauce cup for a whole chicken is really screaming cheapness. I ended up making my own green sauce cuz theirs is pretty weak and watered down. So chicken is good but sauce is lacking flavor and not enough for the amount that was purchased. read more

If you ever walked by this place and wondered what it is, just stop by when you're hungry and check it out! I was surprised into finding this is a Peruvian Chinese Hybrid takeout - who woulda thought!! I like that their menu is simple and focuses on just a few main items of each cuisine vs having everything. It allows them to perfect their items and make it quick, since there seems to be a mini line to order / takeout. I had the ribs and chicken combo. The chicken was standard Peruvian deliciousness. I never liked Chinese ribs that much but having theirs with the green sauce is a game changer - You get very big pieces. I love their pork fried rice because it's no frills simple and can probably eat an entire quart on my own. As for the fries, they have my favorite cut - Single Fried thick, similar to Wendy's. I was recommended this place by a friend because I really wanted some good Chinese Peruvian food. I got a quart of the house special fried rice and a whole chicken plus the fried yuca. I was very disappointed with the rice to be honest with the little bit of meat etc they put and to top it off it was on the top and nothing in between so the first person who served themselves got all the meat etc and rest was just rice . The chicken was a bit salty and the yuca fries could have been crisper. I spent alot of money and don't think I will be going back. read more

Caravan Chicken is a Peruvian chicken joint in Astoria. If you've been to Peking BBQ in Woodside, it is similar, except that the skin isn't sticky and it is seems slightly healthier (if you can call it that) with less drippings and grease. There are tables but most people order out. It gets quite busy. The chicken was good, it is well seasoned with a slightly crispy skin. The breast is a little dry and tasteless as with most chicken, but nothing the delicious green sauce can't solve. They only give a small amount of green sauce though. If you want more, it costs extra. I prefer Peking BBQ's version over this one. read more

The juiciest most flavorful best rotisserie chicken around! Combined with the Chicken Fried Rice with hot sauce and then a Inca Cola to wash it all down, this place has been a go-to since childhood for me and my family! A true hidden gem in Queens! A hole in the wall place to get great Peruvian food. Don't be fooled when you walk in. The owner is of Peruvian/Chinese descent and has been serving great food for years. Chicken is TRULY the best in town and the ribs are large, no-nonsense and succulent. This place DOES NOT deliver so I took away a star. The prices aren't too high but the menu and prices on-line are WAY WRONG! Definitely eat here for a tasty combo of spanish and chinese but, better than the average Chino-cubano joint. I stopped here on a Saturday evening after a walking tour I completed in Queens. I was starving and was looking for some quick dinner before heading home. I checked my bookmarks on Yelp and saw "Caravan chicken." When I walked in it was a little line which I enjoy seeing sometimes because that means the food is usually good. They had a decent sit down area in the back. I ordered the half chicken and rice and beans to go. The prices seemed very reasonable. The chicken was juicy and very tasty, the lick your fingers kind of good. The rice and beans were just okay and seemed a bit dry. I also had their soda which was a cherry flavor that was very good. When I moved back to New York, I was expecting an abundance of really good Peruvian chicken joints. Though there's no shortage of options, especially in Kew Gardens where there seems to be a Tu Casa on every block, there wasn't a single option that made me crave it or drive 30 minutes out of my way like my all time favorite Peruvian chicken joint Super Chicken in Falls Church, VA...until I finally tried Caravan Chicken. I'm glad I don't have to make a pilgrimage down to Virginia to get quality Peruvian chicken and the 20 minute drive to Astoria is well worth it. Caravan is definitely more of a carry out joint, but there are some tables towards the back where you can eat after you place your order at the counter. The chicken here is a solid A: crispy, juicy, good to the last bite, and easily my favorite among the 20 or so Peruvian rotisserie chicken places I've tried in NYC. As good as the chicken is, the thing I love the most on the menu is the fried rice. Whatever option you choose, you will not be disappointed! My personal favorite is the house special fried rice with a little bit of everything (beef, shrimp, roast pork). Paired with the chicken and the house green sauce...this is as good as it gets. In addition to the rice, I love their yucca and their pollo soltado is so good that I might just skip the rotisserie chicken and get that instead (who am I kidding, I'd probably get both). Delivery I've gotten old food a couple times, which has made me weary. This time I go in and order for take out, nothing crazy just a full chicken. I order, pay and wait. I see people come in and pick their stuff up, no biggie but am curious why with a simple order I am waiting. After a half hour I ask what am I waiting for, and instead of an explanation the one cook picks the last chicken sitting in tray under the head lamps.
