Only qualm was my wife is allergic to shellfish, and the one non steak/seafood item they have on the menu is a chicken parm. That filet is fried in the same oil as the seafood/shellfish, and they didn't tell us until the brought out the food. As much as I love steak, it's shocking that I'd never been to a Jeff Ruby's restaurant . . . until now. Last Christmas, they offered a gift card sale, and my friend and I each bought $100 worth for $80. We finally - in September of the next year - were able to make reservations and go to Carlo & Johnny. We picked this spot over the downtown location and The Precinct due to it being literally in the backyard of my friend's childhood home. We were seated immediately and greeted by the assistant server who introduced herself to us. She offered us different types of water. While formal, the atmosphere and attitude never felt stuffy. Our server, Greg, came to the table to introduce himself, ask if we wanted any other drinks and promised to return with bread for the table. Greg was about as perfect a server as I've ever had. He knew precisely when to check in, was appropriately engaged - but never hovered, never interrupted, and had an air of professional confidence that was just lovely. He brought the bread, fresh from the oven, with both regular butter and mushroom truffle butter, which was actually quite good. We both started with a half-size Caesar Salad, which was huge. I can't imagine what the full size would have looked like. I had the 12 oz barrel cut filet, with blue cheese butter and mac and cheese. My friend ordered the petite filet and sides of both Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. (She was planning her menus for the weekend.) We finished off with dessert; my friend had the cheesecake and I had the creme brulee. The steaks, cooked perfectly medium, were so tender you really could cut it with a fork. Twelve ounces is a lot, but I ate every bite. The mac and cheese was rich and cheesy and decadent, with a crust of cheese on top and a gooey center. I didn't sample the Brussel sprouts, but the portion was gigantic. The mashed potatoes were nice, but I was pleased with my choice of mac. I asked Greg which he would prefer over the Peanut Butter dessert and the creme brulee and he didn't hesitate to say creme brulee. He was right. It was the best creme brulee I've ever had. It was a large portion, the carmelized top was delicious, and the raspberries were a nice accompaniment. The cheesecake was lovely, but not really special. Still, there was nothing wrong with it and if that was all they offered for dessert, we would both have been satisfied. We joined the Ruby's loyalty club after dinner. My friend had trouble making it work on her phone, but I was registered within minutes. Super easy, free, and the rewards seem worthwhile. I have every intention of returning to Carlo & Johnny, but I also want to try the Precinct and the new downtown Ruby's spot once it opens. The experience definitely lived up to the hype. read more

For side, what stuck out to me was their mac and cheese. I tasted caramelized onions (but no texture), there were definitely hints of dried mustard, and the roux was well made. It is VERY rich but as a fellow lactose-intolerant girlie, it was worth it. They gave us a sample of their butter pie and wowww I almost wanted to order an additional slice. It almost felt like a cake and there was literally nothing wrong with it. Would I go again? Yes but sparingly due to the price point. 339. I've been here for a few private events. Used to get the filet mignon. Not terrible, but can be a hit or miss when catering to a big crowd. Sometimes tender, other times overcooked. I usually default to the pan-roasted salmon now. Can't go wrong with some omega 3. I've tried their bruschetta multiple times, but it's usually hard and soggy. The dressing on the Freddie salad is so overpowering so I substitute with olive oil. So much better. Mashed potatoes and asparagus are decent. I'm normally not a cheesecake person, but it was moist and not overly sweet. Food may be better at The Precinct, but Carlo and Johnny's wins in the customer service department. read more

Valet parking, great staff members to seat us. Unbelievable ambiance. It is an old mansion owned by the Fleishman family. Was a brothel at one point. Service is on point, Dan was very knowledgeable and friendly, he has been doing this for 30+ years, and it shows. He made my gf his special sweet tea. I had my usual Moscow mule. We had the crab cake and some tiger prawns for appetizers, as well as the artisan bread and truffle butter they serve. For Entres I had the Cowboy steak, she had the NY Strip. The steaks were cooked to perfection, with that char bark Jeff Ruby's is know for. For sides we each had our own potatoes, she had the mashed and I had the baked. This got our night off to a great start. We really felt welcomed. We had already scoped out the menu at home but Greg our service also told us about a few off the menu items. I ordered the watermelon salad my husband got the Honeycomb Burrata salad and added bacon! Both salads were DELICIOUS! We are always excited to see Oysters on the menu so we tried 6 of the Chesapeake oysters. They came with a delicious house made sauce along with homemade cocktails sauce and horseradish and Tabasco sauce! Definitely fresh and wish I would have gotten a dozen. Haven't been here for several years but came back recently with an overall great experience. Got some apps which somewhat outshined the main course. My husband said his steak was like butter; however, mine had some unexpected gristle. Although not the same cut, I would still expect more especially for one of their famed dishes. I requested medium but it was mid-rare. Didn't bother me but could have been on the heat for a minute longer or so. I also got the Burrow sauce. Very thin and almost non-existent. I wish the crawfish had been more plentiful and having to address the crawfish topper myself was a little awkward with it being covered in sauce and while also being dressed up. I recommend ditching the blanched crawfish topper and adding more crawfish pieces within the sauce while also making it a thicker as it used to be. Brussels were good but not anything special- pretty salty actually. Too many large lardon pieces. Our main server was great, very pleasant and attentive! The assistant server was not. He took my husband's bread plate within two minutes of being seated and this same assistant server seemed to consistently cause issues and stress for the others. He was not aware of how service works, the components of the food being served, place settings and was just all over the place. After recently dining at the Precinct, I have to say the one concern is that the experience may be too similar to the other brands. The five star wine, salad, entree (in this case filet mignon) and cheesecake could be copy+pasted from the other restaurants menus. Amazing, yes, but it's a shame the menu is so similar to the others. If you're already in the Montgomery area it's worth a try for a special night out. read more

Took my wife on the 29th for her birthday. Drinks were good, apps were good, service was great. Decor of the restaurant was very cool. Entree steaks took almost 30 minutes to come out. My wife and I took one bite and the seasoning was overloaded with salt, felt like I was licking a salt rock. They took our steaks back and apologized, but the second steaks were marginally better, and took almost 25 minutes to come out after they were sent back. They comped our drinks and a dessert, but was very disappointed in the steak quality, especially since we were super excited to try this location (I'm a big fan of the Precinct.). Our reservation was for 730pm and we didn't leave the restaurant until almost 10pm. My husband got the surf and turf and I got the sea bass. My fish was nice presentation but over seared .. I didnt prefer the crispy outside. It was eatable. We both agreed we preferred the food from Flemings. Plus Flemings makes some mention of what your celebrating and gift you 4 chocolate truffles. I had specifically mentioned his birthday when making the reservations here but nothing was said or done. That never happens at Flemings and its similar price point. The decor here is far more interesting. We both agreed for the price the food was 4 star. But it was good and we enjoyed our evening but for same price prefer Flemings which is in Beavercreek..similar distance from us. I did hear other servers ask their people if they were celebrating anything but our never did. Bit let down. Didnt want them to sing happy birthday like a chi chis but I wanted some mention of his birthday. We shared a dessert.. the butter pie ... we both agreed we should have just stopped for icecream. Hostess was able to seat us promptly on a busy Friday night near the bar w/o a reservation. Service was good, but the bread was not my speed I noticed a strange smell emanating from it but my wife assured me that that's just how this type of sourdough is supposed to smell. Fine, but why do I have to peel an inedible "JR" label from the butter prior to digging in? I'll just stick this on my head while I eat. At this point, things were fine and I wouldn't dock them for the weird bread+butter combo. I made a major misstep ordering the wedge salad. My wife ordered the Caesar WHICH I KNEW WAS AMAZING, but I ordered the wedge, like an idiot. The full portion arrived with about 1/8 a head of iceberg & a giant gob of blue cheese dressing, blue cheese crumbles and 2 huge blocks of salt pork. YOU WANT EXTRA? C&J IS GOING EXTRA EXTRA! My approach to high-end dining is to consume what they bring you, if you are able, and decide how it went afterward. I tried to eat both pieces of SALT style pork, but between that and the now-chopped & mixed salad, I had reached my daily salt intake for the day. Feeling somewhat grossed out I anxiously awaited my $70 NY strip. This baby arrives looking AMAZING! I like my steak medium rare, but have found that nicer steakhouses usually (wisely) undercook steaks, so I ordered it medium & was self'd with a slightly medium-well steak. Had I ordered it medium rare and it arrived rare, I'd have had them toss it back on the grill for 2 minutes. Can't call this their fault but what is their fault is the thick SALT crust. If you want me to drink more beer, you win. Now on my 3rd beer, I worked my way through the SALT beef. The steak was, in fact, a beautiful segment of steer. Too bad I couldn't imagine consuming anymore salt at this point. I ate half. Beer and dessert from here out! The baked Alaska was incredible 10/10! Taft's C&J American ale 10/10 as well. We paid $300 with tip for 2 people. I expected that. What I didn't expect was how much of a sap I felt like halfway through the meal. We sat on the patio because the fall evening weather was perfect. They had provided heaters as it cooled down to keep the temperature comfortable. Our food was to die for. The steaks were cooked perfectly and you could basically cut them with a butter knife. Topped with their famous Collinsworth topping and a side of their Mac and cheese which can not be topped and their mashed. We had delicious wine of A Cab and Pinot Noir. Our service was excellent. We waited a half hour just to get a drink after being sat at our table. The server was hard to find and unattentive. Not at all what you would expect from a Rubys restaurant.
