My fiance and I went here to do a cake tasting for our wedding - one of many for the trip. A really cool thing was that they make you little individual cakes for the tasting versus little slices which most others do. Of course they then charge you for them but nevertell you that initially - wasnt expensive but wasn't discussed either. The Bad part was that the cake really wasnt very good at all - pretty dry and their prices were WAY too high. Go to Morningstar or Christies Cake Creations instead. Carlock's is my favorite bakery. I wish they have a location in SLO because all the other bakery in SLO can't compare with Carlock's. They have donuts, cookies, pastries, cakes, savory items, breads, cheese cakes, and lot of fun stuff. Prices are very reasonable and they're very busy, if you come in late, most items will be gone! I always wondering how big is their kitchen, because they served everything everyday, unlike House of Bread have daily special. That makes it the best bakery in SLO area!!! read more

I have lived in Los Osos just over 2.5 years so this place was new to us. Very nice local friendly bakery. I read reviews of people who are not pleased with the new owners in comparison. I never get anything but friendly service.I love that they now have milk teas. I get the honeydew melon with juice poppers. Delish. They always remember my favorite. The desserts are always delish. I love the angel babies. Raspberry cake when they have it by the slice. The cookies are tasty..apple fritters...yum..I could go on. This place is dangerous to my waistline!! This little bakery has a good verity of baked good from donuts to pork.buns. The turkey and cheese crossitant grabbed my attention. She warmed it in the microwave way too long leaving the crossitant mushy and flat. It was gar from buttery and flaky. The cheese they used was American cheese which I'm not a fa of. As part of our annual trip to the central coast, we stopped in for the bacon cheddar biscuits only to find that a prior customer came in and bought all of them. Man, I hate it when people do that. Anyway. If you get a chance to try these, I highly recommend. Instead we picked up a ham and swiss croissant - unheated. Something about putting a croissant in a microwave that is just blasphemous. HOWEVER, the croissant was inedible immediately after purchasing since it was still close to frozen in the middle. Frozen croissant at a bakery? What? Raspberry bar/danish was good but not really worth a special trip (unlike those delicious bacon cheddar biscuits). There is an entire rack of bread from...another bakery. Strange. Another one of those Osos treasures! Carlocks is a fantastic Bakery that sells some of the best Danish pastries I've ever had. All the goodies are really cheap (most under $2), and amazingly decadent. My favorites have to be the apple/cream cheese danish, or the Heidelberg, which is another tasty apple pastry. The staff there is super nice so tip them well! If you live even in moderate proximity to Los Osos, this Bakery is well worth the drive for their delectable delights. I would be so surprised if anything was actually made from scratch here. Luckily the gal working last saturday the 9th was very friendly. The pastry counter is impressive with many different types of pastries to choose from. Traditional donuts, eclairs and other French pastries, carrot cake and dessert muffins, and many different fine cookies. Two stars is because of the service. I like to ask about food I'm not familiar with before purchasing but the gal didn't want to answer questions. "Read the card" was the reply. I've been going to Carlock's for a long time and never had such awful customer service. I walked in and a young women half heartedly greeted me and my 3 year old daughter. She's rung us up before and I thought the first few times she was just having a bad day and now I've figured out she's just rude. She sighed when I told her I had 6 donuts and would need a box instead of individual bags and when she rung me up she told me my total and stuck her hand out waiting for the money. Regardless of her continuous rude service we keep going back because we love Carlock's donuts and that's what it's ultimately about. I give them 2 stars for their donuts and homey original Carlock's vibes but no more due to lack of KINDNESS. Sorry not sorry. read more

Haven't had much there but what I have had was delicious! One pastry my boyfriend brought to me at work once was just like something I've had in Czech Republic before-cream cheese filled something with powdered sugar on top. So good. Also bought a dozen doughnuts for his work once, can't really remember how good but I'm sure they were (bad I would remember). Definitely want to try more. One star deducted for them being closed Sunday-Monday (WHY would a bakery be closed Sunday?! That's when everyone wants doughnuts!) and the lady in charge isn't the most friendly from what I've seen. read more

This is an incredibly special and one-of-a-kind bakery! We ordered the raspberry danish, lemon donut, and apple fritter which were all so amazing. In fact, we ate it outside and I went back in to tell them how amazing it was and the owner was grateful and explained it is because they are the only place that uses homemade (instead of factory purchased) dough AND fillings for their pastries. I then asked how they managed to put out SO many different varieties of baked goods and he said that him and his wife work 16 hour days, 6 days a week ( and have have since the 1960's!). Carlocks has pretty good pastry's and what not, but in the 20 years I've been going there nothing beats the Jalapeno and Cheddar fritters. They're very versatile, you can chow down on them by themselves (I prefer to heat mine for 10-15 seconds) or to use as a sandwich or burger bun. Try them, you won't be disappointed. read more

Finally got my hubby to Carlocks. We've had some baked goodies from here (that other people brought to events we attended) and those - especially cakes - were all very delicious. There are many eye-appealing baked items behind glass counters: various kinds of cookies (some are airbrushed and very colorful) and pastries/donuts. Someone if definitely skilled with an airbrush for decorating things. The snickerdoodle cookie was a let down, not that much flavor to it (like the cream of tartar and cinnamon). The danishes were tried did taste good, and are very sweet! The beerocks are rather good. Nice dough around the meat filling. Heat up very well in the microwave. Seems like the cakes are the best things at Carlocks - yummy and beautiful. read more

This bakery is an institution in Los Osos... and justifiably so! I remember it being there since the early 70's, and a bakery simply doesn't last 30+ years without proving it's mettle to the locals! The donuts and breads (cheese, cinnamon, jalapeno, etc.) are baked fresh daily in the wee morning hours and IMO are the best in the county (House of Bread comes in a close #2 for breads). Even people who live in SLO or other surrounding towns know Carlock's baked goods - they're that good! I particularly love the cinnamon rolls and cinnamon swirl bread - sometimes I'll buy a dozen donuts for the office just as an excuse to be late and get myself a cinnamon roll on the way to work! The apple fritters and bear claws are huge and eminently delectable too. They also have other unique baked concoctions to tempt you in the glass case. They're closed Mondays, but you'll find the place packed every other morning, so be sure to take a number ticket from the red roll dispenser on the counter and keep an eye on the classic "NOW SERVING" sign on the back wall. The gals working the counter are friendly, cute, and efficient. There's sit-down seating too if you don't have to rush off to work right away... Carlock's is the best! read more

We were relieved to see there was a bakery next to the bookstore that had caught our eye as we drove through Los Osos. It was nice to be able to buy a blueberry muffin and a small carton of milk for my child, who obviously enjoyed them. The array of offerings was very impressive in this bakery. Do they really move all that in one day? In other words, can a customer count on it all being fresh each day? I can't tell you if the sweets taste good, because my husband and I had savory items. He had a sausage wrapped in a biscuit and I had a turkey croissant. We were so hungry that we were relieved to eat but then some things dawned on us. I don't know if their display case is keeping these things with meat in them cold. Also, all either of us really tasted was salt. And, we had ordered coffees and there were no modern sweeteners to put in them, just sugar and the stuff in the pink wrapper, giving the bakery an outdated feel. As we looked around - yeah, it could definitely use an update. So our feeling about the place was mixed. We would probably return but be careful about what we ordered. read more

Whenever we're in the San Luis Obispo area, we always make the short drive out to Los Oso to Carlock's Bakery. Simply the best bakery you'll ever eat at! Their specialties are the baked goods: doughnuts, cookies, croissants, sweets so delectable you honestly have a hard time stopping! They also have freshly baked bread and savory sandwiches! Today I had a ham and chees croissant. Just pure heaven!! The croissant was super light, buttery and the flakyiest I have ever bit into! YUM! Loaded with fresh thin sliced ham and cheese. Went in and one of the workers told me she couldn't serve me because I couldn't wear a fabric mask (w/ Dr note) but had a face shield on. I'm glad we didn't read the whiney reviews first or we wouldn't have stopped here. And we would have missed out on some really delicious treets. The boysenberry fried pie was plump full of fruit filling. Hammentashen cookies were just out of the oven and a raspberry filled pastry was good too. Everything was definitely fresh on a Monday afternoon though for a small-town bakery, they probably have too much selection out on display, I can see how some things might get stale or left unsold. So disappointed; upon entering after a couple of years in visiting Los Osos, we could tell something was different; Suspected new ownership immediately. Understocked, no customers...but we ordered a fried pie and an apple filled something. After the first bite, I had to spit it out. Old tasting grease - my husband tasted this too and had to spit it out. His pastry old and this was in the morning! Told the owner - crickets. She didn't apologize or offer something else. OK. When Carlock's was sold, we were told there would be no changes. That isn't quite true. Something is slightly different in flavor & size....the donuts are a little smaller and the icing is not the same. The donuts have less flavor and a lot of "air." I go here for the bear claws, Danishes and .... (Wait for it) .... The BEST croissant egg and bacon breakfast sandwich!!!!! This bakery is a staple in our little town of Los Osos. Having said that it's nice to go to a family owned business and not some giant corporate behemoth. What ever you do, DO NOT order the coffee. A few years back this place was amazing with lines of people waiting for fresh donuts on Saturday. Certainly a favorite while I was growing up in Los Osos. I do not know what happened to this place. I came in on Saturday and ordered several donuts only to find later they were dry like day old donuts. Carlocks used to be run by a well known baker. I don't think that is the case any more and it shows. The glazed frosting isn't the same beautiful frosting it once was and the fact that our donuts were not fresh on a Saturday morning is absolutely ridiculous. Used to be a local favorite now the name is the only thing local about it. If a quality donut maker moved to Los Osos not only would I be thankful but so would Los Osos. read more

Carlock's feeds me coffee and "patisserie" goods most mornings. Cronuts are amazing both filled and unfilled. Staff is friendlier than most. Coffee is hard to mess up and Carlock's definitely doesn't miss the target. Carlock's is a great way to start your day. read more
