This is my third Carlyle sleeper I've purchased. One for my lake house in Vermont and two for my NY upper eastside apartment. Their craftsmanship, design, comfort and durability is exceptional. My wife and I are impressed with how long our sofas held up raising 3 children and having 2 dogs. The only drawback was 4 months lead time. However it was well worth the wait. We had a great experience with Carlyle. Due to COVID restrictions we had to make an appointment to order a sofa bed. The sales person was extremely helpful and friendly. She was great with my children. She also gave us great advice as to what fabrics would work with kids and cats. Our sofa bed was ready in about 10 weeks - a bit longer than promised but again, it was ordered in the middle of a pandemic. The sofa bed is super comfortable and fits our decor nicely. Very poor quality. Did not wear well after two years of light use. The cushions needed to be replaced because they flattened like pancakes and the material stretched out. We were told to give them to a company called Renee Rojas to be refilled. We paid $1,000 for a terrible job. When we wrote to the store to tell them they said they could do nothing about this and said we should go back to ROJAS. Rojas said it was about poor maintenance on our part. I don't know what this mysterious maintenance is. They are puffed up on a regular basis and we are not heavy people. The also regularly shed feathers like a cheap down coat. The stapled fabric on the frame is puckered. and looks terrible. Don't waste your money on this very expensive junk. read more

Had a Carlyle sofa bed 20 years ago and wanted to have a new sofa bed, so ordered. Wanted to have a sofa bed with two seats and cushions (higher back cushion/relatively flat so that I can lay my head). Paid a half then waited for four months. Sofa arrived finally on 31 March 2022 (delivery fee was almost $500). The sofa's cushion was not what we expected - too bulky taking a half of sitting space and height too low, can't put your heads on. Also when we sit and laid on the sofa one day we had serious bug bites. Finally, I realized that underneath of the sofa bed, the mattress was not covered and almost touching on a floor, taking all dusts. If we knew this before I would not remove a plastic cover of mattress to protect it from dusts. I think this is a detect. I was very disappointed about the quality of he sofa (cushion and mattress's exposure) and bud issue (we sprayed immediately after) and compared to the store by email. Tirzah, a sales person responded and ensured that a customer service person would contact me. I waited for a week, no one contacted. I contacted again and Susan Marino, the Sales Manager whose rudeness someone mentioned in this review section, told me that the customer person was sick this could not contact me (if so, please do let me know.) she put all nonsense excuses and did not resolve any problems. I asked to replace the cushion, fix the mattress, and investigate the bug issue and asked the technician to come over my place to check. No response other than her continuous excuse. I wanted to raise this issue to the owner/head of the company and asked the person's name, Susan told me that she was the owner (hello is it true ?) abd I should write it to her. I really hope the Carlyle aware this issue abd resolve to my satisfaction. The quality and the service of Carlyle really downgraded and I would not recommend to buy any, unfortunately. read more

I am thrilled with my new Charles of London sofa bed from Carlyle. This is the third sofa I've owned from Carlyle in 50 years. The service and quality is as good as it's always been. Tiersa was easy to work with and always available and helpful. When she wasn't there, Ana stepped in and provided support. The delivery process was fast and easy, despite the fact that the delivery person said that it was the most difficult delivery he ever made. We live in a Federal Style building that was built in 1828. Evidently couches the size of ours weren't commonly purchased at that time. Space is tight, to say the least. He was professional and careful in maneuvering the couch through the narrow hallway and into our living room. My couch is beautiful and comfy! read more

I've bought 3 sofa beds over the tears from Carlyle and while expensive they have always lasted 10+ years and were of good quality. My only gripe was one of the couches had a shallow depth and a tight back and the salesman did not warn me that the combination would make for a nice looking but uncomfortable couch. I'm surprised to see all the negative reviews of Carlyle though but I haven't bought from them in last 5 years so maybe things have gone a little downhill from when I bought my sofas. Also there seems to be a lot more improved technology from other companies. The owner of Carlyle though should respond to the negative reviews though so at least it would show they care about addressing the negative perception. At the time of purchase, we also had to return the storage semi-circles repeatedly because the workmanship was poor. Consumer, beware of false claims and proceed with Carlyle at your own risk of great aggravation. I purchased a Carlyle sofa bed in 2002, it was beautiful and served me well. But after many years of use the sofa bed mechanism needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, I found that the Carlyle customer service ethic had plummeted since my initial dealings with them and my attempt to replace the sofa bed mechanism through Carlyle turned out to be an utter fiasco. Through the process of making the sale, the customer service persons were pleasant and accommodating, but once they had my payment the tone shifted to one of condescension. As discrepancies arose, they were at best, remiss in their fact-checking, and at worst, deliberately dishonest. If you do choose to purchase from Carlyle it would be wise to take nothing for granted when dealing with customer service. Ask every conceivable question, get every answer in writing and if you must communicate with customer service by phone make every effort to record the conversation. This might prove necessary for your own protection. In my experience, the miscommunication or outright conniving exhibited by the staff persons and the store manager resulted in them citing scenarios that did not take place and claiming that their colleagues had attested to sequences of events that did not happen at all. Based upon these falsehoods, they attempted to charge me more than I had already paid, but fortunately, I had irrefutable evidence of all that had actually transpired in the form of emails dating back over an eight-month period. After an extended and painstaking battle, they finally took the time to refer back to those same emails themselves and ultimately admitted that I was correct. They did give me a full refund, but only after eight months of arguing and wasting my time. Given Carlyle's long-standing reputation for quality products and services and the high prices thereof, I found it shocking and outrageous that the Carlyle customer service staff imposed upon me, the customer, to spend my time and energy on the task of resolving the mistakes and miscommunications which had directly resulted from their failure to do simple fact-checking and communicate effectively amongst themselves. Customers do not deserve that sort of treatment and Carlyle does not deserve your business! read more

The problem is that Carlyle Convertible Sofa Beds isn't set-up to repair or service their sofa beds when they break and the owners live or move outside their service area (NY/Tri-State). Although NONE of these out-of-state repair issues were disclosed at the time of sale, the Carlyle Sofa Bed CEO used the blame-the-out-of-state-customers approach for even buying one of their pricey sofa beds. Carlyle reps said they would "try" to find someone in our area who could install one of their Steelweave mattress frames but they did not offer an estimate on the cost of the labor. Additionally, Carlyle offered no warranty on the labor because the installer will not be a Carlyle-trained installer. These open-ended charges did not even include the price of a replacement Steelweave frame being shipped to us. Carlyle initially quoted an amount of more than $800. Beauty is Only Skin Deep Once in NYC, Carlyle was the gold standard for custom convertibles. It was expensive, but the sofas had style and the construction was meticulous and the mattress worth sleeping on. So on the last day of February, when we ordered our beautiful, sleek, sofa with its expensive custom fabric, an extra charge, and its upgraded cool-gel mattress, another extra charge, and paid the delivery fee, we had high expectations. It arrived in April more or less on time (on its website Carlyle writes glowingly about its customized couches made in a local factory--I guess if High Point NC which is where mine was shipped from qualifies as local, it's local) and then another fee--it had to be disassembled--with the bed mechanism in place it doesn't fit through a standard apartment door--and then reassembled inside--cash only! And that was only the beginning: the couch is distinctive, outside. In May, the expensive, upgraded mattress which has a plastic wire inside to maintain its shape attached itself to a misaligned spring on the interior frame--After many calls back and forth, Carlyle replaced the interior mechanism (the repair people are amiable, competent and efficient) We asked about the mattress which now had a large hole from the spring and a perfect line of smaller holes that coincided with the springs where it rubbed. We sent a photo, the manager initially blamed us. More exasperated calls back and forth. A mattress replacement promised, voice mails left, finally, this week, the last week in July, the same patient good humored, repair man brought a new mattress. As he was removing the mattress and replacing it with the new one we noticed they were both labeled--the new one labeled, cool gel, the old one comfort foam (standard pricing). Wait! We checked our initial order, we had paid extra for cool gel. Would we have ever paid attention, after all the couch arrived closed and who looks at labels, if we hadn't had the mattress replaced? My foolishness. And my expense. We contacted the store manager anyway. Their reply: "unfortunately, it was incorrectly pulled by a new employee. ..We inspect every piece leaving the factory twice...but do not cross reference the mattress selection. This has now been added to the inspection process." I apologize...it is not our usual excellent service." Oh, nice to know my discovery improved their procedures. Moral: Sometimes the gold standard is really Fool's Gold. read more

Want different legs? No problem. Pick from the endless range of fabric upholstery, or wild colors of butter-soft leather. Want wider arms? Deeper cushions? Thicker? Thinner? One seat cushion instead of 3? Want a better mattress, engineered to sleep on every night, rather than just for the occasional guest? Done. These are truly beautiful pieces of furniture, and they are made in the USA (NJ, I think). The quality is stunning. I'm very happy and have been for 8 years. My Carlyle still looks like new, and I've had two dogs in residence over its lifetime. My sofabed has proven to be one of those expensive-but-worth-it purchases. read more

A Carlyle sofa bed was th e first furniture I bought when I moved to NYC many years ago. We used it for guests. We slept on it when we had a studio apartment. It LASTED & was COMFORTABLE. Years later and I needed a sofa bed. I looked for one that EASILY becomes a bed AND for which I can use a REGULAR QUEEN-SIZED SHEET and for which the shape, size and upholstery choices were good for me. We bought a cloth-covered sleeper for one person that we put in our library. Hardly ever used. People have slept in it perhaps a dozen times. The material between the cushions stated desingtigrating five years later. I repeat, this is a sofa that was never used. Terrible. I bought a sofa bed here for my NYC apartment. I use the apartment as a pied a terre and I am seldom there. After having it for little more than two years and using it rarely and being very careful with it, the fabric started tearing. I mean big big tears. I contacted Carlyle and they told me that because the sofa was no longer under warranty and the fabric was discontinued, I would have to reupholster the whole sofa at my own expense. I contacted an independent upholsterer and she told me that the fabric Carlyle used was not appropriate for sofas. It was a very light linen that should have been used for curtains only. She also told me the tearing looked like sunburn and that could not be explained by my own use---the apartment faces North and I use blackout curtains when I am not there. This leads me to believe that either the fabric was defective or the sofa had problems even before I got it. This was not a cheap sofa. SO disappointed and feeling cheated. read more

They took half of the cost and then called to say (they never checked!) it would be 5-8 weeks. Now they tell me 11 weeks and won't let me cancel the order. I bought my sofabed at Carlyle because it was the only one in all of Manhattan that fit; I'm about five feet tall, and most sofas are too big for me to lean back comfortably with my feet on the floor. I was reluctant to pay so much, especially since my previous Carlyle purchase, years ago, was poor quality. Tiersa was an excellent and helpful salesperson who steered me immediately to the perfect fit. My main complaint was with delivery; nobody contacted me in the week it was supposed to be delivered or the next week, and I had to bug Tiersa (probably not her job to deal with delivery issues). Once scheduled, delivery went smoothly. The sofa appears to be excellent quality, but I've had it only a short time. The bed is extremely comfortable, much better than other sofabeds I've slept on. read more

I recently shopped for a sofa bed from Carlyle for my 80+ mom. I wanted a quality, supremely comfortable sofa bed, with the sofa providing good back support, because it is the one piece of furniture my mom uses every day (to sit on watching tv/having conversation and every night her aides use it to sleep). I was dreading the shopping experience because of the many choices involved which can become overwhelming for someone unfamiliar with the territory. After searching online for a store, I found my way to Carlyle and met Savannah. She patiently and expertly helped me every step of the way, with sofa style, cushions, fabric and mattress. Something so complicated, with her guidance, became quite easy and rather pleasurable. So much so, my husband and I returned to the store to purchase a chair from her soon afterwards. Do not buy anything from this company! Horrible delivery, management and mediocre product! Here is a copy of my letter to the owner and manager which went unanswered after six months and repeated phone calls: Dear Mr. de Matteo, I am writing as I have had a very mixed experience with Carlyle Sofa. The person I worked with at your store was wonderful. Stephen was an excellent and knowledgeable sales person. The problems I encountered were due to the delivery timing and service. 1. The sofa was a week and a half late in being delivered. (The timing was essential as I had house guests arriving from Europe this past weekend.) 2. The old sofa in the room was to be dismantled and discarded. 3. I never got a confirmation call from the delivery company and when I was waiting for three hours I called Stephen and he called them to make sure they were coming. 4. When they arrived the first thing they said was that they were not told there was a sofa to remove and that they couldn't remove it as the back couldn't be taken off as it was not a Carlyle sofa. (At no time did I say the old sofa was a Carlyle. I chose Carlyle in the first place to avoid any delivery tension as I was assured both over the phone before I ever went to the store that Carlyle specialized in getting sofas in and out of difficult spaces.) 5. They called Susan Marino, the store manager who got on the phone with me and was very rude. Rather than try to solve the problem she was telling me they would just have to leave the sofa and it was my problem to find someone to take out the old sofa. I said then to take back your sofa as I only spent $7,000 to avoid this problem. She said she couldn't refund the money etc.or ask the movers to dismantle the old sofa. In the mean time my super who helped them bring in the new sofa, brought in a saw and five minutes later the old sofa was removed. 6. The stress and tension of this experience was terrible. Carlyle is supposed to be a first rate furniture company and your delivery and manager were horrible. 7. I am requesting money back from the delivery cost due to this unprofessional and unpleasant situation. (*Additionally my friends have said the sofa bed feels very unsupported and the frame seems less sturdy than my old sofa which lasted over ten years and cost a fourth of this new one.) read more

I actually have purchased two sofa beds and two mattresses over the years and had a very good feeling about the company. But last fall the mechanism in the sofa bed broke and I had to order a new one because they no longer do repairs. So I bought it and it arrived in a timely fashion but once my mattress was put on it it would not close properly. The person who had put in the mechanism tried to convince me it was working properly when clearly it wasn't. After several phone calls (and since I could still close and open the sofa bed,though with problems, I was told that I probably needed a new mattress since perhaps the mechanism had changed. So then I ordered a new mattress on Oct. 30. I am still waiting to receive it. First I was told it would take 4 weeks; then I was told it would soon after that. And, when I made a surprise visit to the store in December, one of the employees let slip that there were no mattresses or mechanisms "in the pipeline" and he was told there would be none until after the new year. I made it clear I would be out of NY for the month of January and expected to get one delivered asap when I returned at the beginning of February. I emailed the store at the beginning of Feb. and got an email back saying that my request would be passed on the info on to the people making the mattresses. Then I got a phone call last week telling me that I would get it in about two weeks. By the way it is unclear if the mechanism is still good since to close and open it when the mattress is not fully closed is probably messing it up. But I have no choice since it is my bed. They did say that if the mechanism is not good they would replace it free of charge. Stay tuned. But, at this point I would not recommend them to anyone. read more

DO NOT REUPHOLSTER your furniture here! I had a sofa which only needed new upholstery because I moved into a new apartment and changed the color scheme. Rather than going through a decorator, I decided to have it reupholstered directly with Carlyle. It cost nearly $4,000 to reupholster a sofa slightly larger than a love seat. While the upholstery job was just okay (some seams misaligned), the sofa was returned in terrible shape! The wooden base was completely scratched AND broken! Mind you, I had the sofa for just under 3 years and it was in mint condition before it left to be reupholstered. Beyond that, upon delivery, their clumsy shippers knocked over a cocktail table and destroyed newly refinished wood floors and walls. BEWARE!! I will never use them again!! Carlyle is STILL the gold standard for sofas in NYC. If it's quality you're looking for, look no further. Their prices reflect quality craftmanship, so consider the fact that you'll have your sofa for the next 30 years. I bought my first sofa bed from them about 20 years ago, and it held up beautifully. It looks like the day I bought it. When I needed another sofa bed for a tiny guest bedroom, I went straight back to Carlyle; this new one is even more comfy than the first one I bought (new technology, I suppose). I actually sleep on it all the time. It feels like my Temperpedic mattress, because there are no uncomfortable seams, as one would expect to find in lesser-quality sofa beds. Carlyle's customer service is excellent, too. (Thank you, Tiersa). Her follow-up was wonderful, and she even called after my sofa was delivered to make sure everything was fine. (It was). I'm not one to write reviews, but I really do love my Carlyle sofa. I'm going to buy one for my daughter as an engagement gift. read more

Beware of hidden charges and fees!!!!!! We paid $5000 for a sofa in 2002 from Carlyle. Within three years, the fabric on the cushions was fraying and we paid $900 for the cushion fabric to be replaced. Now ten years later (2015) after a debate we bit the bullet and agreed to spend $2500 to have the sofa reupholstered (price includes delivery of $300, re-upholstery of $1800 and fabric cost of around $400). First we were told that the delivery cost would be higher than expected (another $250 due to need to take off part of the couch to fit in elevator). Now we are being told that the couch needs new cushions with tax totalling $600. So if Carlyle has its way we will be spending close to 35% more than the initially agreed upon price. Save your pennies: avoid the aggravation and go elsewhere. read more

I don't really ever buy extravagantly, but this was completely worth every single penny. the product is superb, and the buying process was low-stress. lori's patience, creativity and thoughtfulness over several lengthy visits was invaluable, and the service she provided bordered on the therapeutic, and when i couldn't find lori when ready to finalize my order, warren stepped in and helped with all the options. you really can customize every single aspect of your sofa, as other reviewers have mentioned, so that the sofa you create is uniquely yours. we even customized the lead time for the manufacturing process, as I wasn't sure when i'd be moving into my new apt, and we adjusted as time passed. the factory staff was professional and knowledgeable, and the delivery staff were truly pros at their work. aside from the service, what has set Carlyle apart from any other buying experience is the absolute artistry with which they constructed and upholstered my sofa. I provided them with my own fabric, which had a complicated and intricate pattern, and their craftspeople intuitively knew how to place it to make the most of the pattern and where best to place seams when necessary. it's gorgeous and I couldn't be happier. the mattress is bigger and almost more comfortable than the one on my regular queensize bed! to be honest, I haven't sat in my Carlyle sofa all that much.
