Never buy from carmax. Both myself and my colleague are doctors and we need vehicles for work. We chose CarMax because we thought they would be reliable as they are meant to thoroughly check a vehicle that's used. Well, it's 100% a failure as her vehicle broke down within a week and mine just did as well. Our vehicles are two years old. I think when people have a lemon of a vehicle they take them to CarMax when they want to get rid of it so that they don't feel guilty about selling it to an individual as CarMax is meant to check it out and fix the issues. However, I don't think they do a very good job. My colleague sent her vehicle back to be repaired and she got it back within a week after having to rent her own vehicle as they didn't have a loaner and it broke down again within three days. I am dropping my vehicle off today and I am meant to get a loaner but I have very low expectations. Why is a car that is two years old and cost $50,000 breaking down within a week of purchase just like my colleague- just don't do it. read more

I was there to sell my car and I was told it'll take 3-4 hours to be called. I was notified sooner and I got myself there in 4 minutes. They gave me such a hard time because I wasn't there in the first minute that eventually they refused to serve me. The unprofessional manager told me " we are the busiest center". I had a mostly pleasant experience at this carmax. Let me start by prefacing that this was my first time selling a car on my own. And I had problems with the paperwork (title) etc, so Carvana wouldn't accept my car without a plethora of extra steps. I will say Carmax did offer me $800 less than carvana but they were just easier to work with. I could actually talk to a live person! Which is mind blowing in todays modern world where everything is solved my a computer response. So this worked for me, yes i still needed to get power of attorney paperwork to be able to sell my car but they made it extra easy for me to not mess up dmv paperwork. Once i received my appraisal my value changed a mere $100. Carmax worked the best for me given the location, ease of transaction and transparency of wait times. So I would say this, if you want the car sold, with little effort and easy instructions go to Carmax- they got you! Pro tip! Bring your snackies, cafecito, water whatever. The vending machine wasn't working when i went. And something to read or a friend to share the time with. read more

I am a haggler, and while I wasn't able to get the price down, John was able to add value to the purchase by personally taking the car into the back and touching up some cosmetic details that my highly meticulous/picky eye picked out. Horrible bait and switch experience as a seller! I came here last Sunday to get a quote for a 3rd party lease buyout and I quickly received one. They asked what my payoff was, and I showed them the online payoff from Toyota Financial Services. I was told to just come by within a week if I wanted to accept the offer. I then showed up today to sell, and was told sorry, actually for a lease buyout the transaction has to happen on a week day so that they can call the lease company to "verify". So they said the only option was to come back tomorrow and try to process it then, with no guarantee the offer would be the same. The woman who gave the offer last week (I forget her name but she has scorpion and spider tattoos on her arm) said that she didn't tell me my offer basically expired on Friday instead of Sunday because I "didn't seem interested." Manuel, the manager, tried to blame me for "waiting until the last day" of the offer. This whole experience feels like a massive scam and is completely unacceptable from a large business. read more

After calling ahead making a 4pm appointment, we arrived at 4pm and after half an hour, had to approach the manager to inform him we hadn't been helped yet. After an additional wait time, we found out the vehicle we wanted to test drive would not be doable since the test driver had to be the policy holder on their own provided insurance, and not as an insured driver / responsible party. Yes you read that correct. If you have a family member on your policy and they aren't the policy holder... they cannot test drive the vehicle. Keep this in mind in case you're thinking of driving over to check out a car. This was the first time a car dealership had imposed us with this, let alone asked us for our insurance card (rather than just drivers license, which is what the other dealership we went to right after just asked us for :) ) Sorry CarMax. He really takes your specific wants and budget and really breaks down information so easy to understand and compare. I never leave with unanswered questions or feeling uneasy. The vehicle valuation, document uploading, appt setup was seamless and the customer service from our pickup driver was A+ (Hugo). Hugo checked in via cell for arrival updates and was professional and knowledgeable - awesome customer service! Good old bait and switch. I was trying to sell my X1 because I no longer needed it, rather than have the car depreciate even further I wanted to sell it. The car had 99k miles and it was in very good mechanical and cosmetic shape. Aside from one very small scratches on the bumper. Of course carmax comes in with the best offer at $5600. kBB trade in was valued at 4700. I make an appointment and bring the car in, 30 mins later my car mysteriously develops an "engine noise" so their offer is now $2000. I was lucky that I didn't need to sell the car. I asked who was the "expert " that diagnosed the car, gave a BS excuse that they had a car with the same engine that didn't sound like that. Mind you that is the "expert " diagnosis. Knowing what I have, I get my keys and out the door. Out of pettiness, I book an appointment at Pacific BMW. I spent $245 dollars for them to tell me the car is in perfect mechanical condition, the ticking noise is normal for BMW engines of the N20 variant, think of Diesel sounding. This is directly from BMW dealership. A couple hours later BMW of Sherman Oaks calls me wanting to buy my car for 4750. They also inspect it and I get the exact same answer. Everything is in top condition. I believe an employee at carmax wanted the car for themselves and try to scam me out of it. I brought my Honda SUV in for service because the engine was making a loose muffler sound. And they told me it would take about 3 and a half hrs for the diagnostic and it would cost me $165. So I said go ahead and diagnose the car. What ever the cost I just need it fixed. They were clearly over booked and I sat in the waiting room for five hrs and the technician told me they were unable to diagnose the issues and maybe I should leave it overnight so they could check it later. Funny thing is everyone who rides in the car can hear the thumping, but the service technician cannot. I was talking to someone else in the waiting room and she said she had been waiting 3 hrs for a simple oil change apt. So if timely comprehensive work is something you're looking for then do t bring your car here. read more

These people scammed me. I bought a 2016 370z Roadster convertible and the top has never worked right. I took it to Glendale Nissan and they ended up having to replace the entire top as everything was shot. This was $22,000 and while it was covered by the extended warranty Maxcare, my driver side door is now messed up. I tried to resolve this amicably with the Service Manager Lanette but she was of zero help. Now I'm going to get the state of California involved as this is dealer fraud. It was found that the top had no clips and was being held in place with double stick tape! Not only that, but when Glendale Nissan took the driver's side door apart, they found that the bolts were stripped, meaning work had been done on this car without being reported! read more

You're good to go". I moved 2k miles across the country 2 weeks later. I just rcvd an automated red-light-camera ticket for a violation in Van Nuys, CA that occurred 11/6/23 ..committed by an older woman (clear as day in the pictures mailed to me) that is content with breaking the law. Shame on me for not following up with CA DMV, but this is awful customer care. The release form is worthless. Try being straightforward with your customers. Now I have to deal with the CA DMV & courts from 2200 miles away. read more

I was told to wait by my car and the appraiser should be with me within 10 minutes waited for about 30 min I saw the appraiser which happen to be parked by my car instead of assisting me went on his break didn't say anything when he got back he didn't introduce himself literally spent a quick 6 minutes looking at the car and said that was it. I called Erik because the next step of the appraisal was not mentioned, and he told me he would be emailing me an offer. Avoid Burbank CarMax at all costs. They will treat you like a second class citizen and LADIES please be aware, as this place oozes toxic masculinity. You can easily tell women staff are very underrepresented here, especially on the sales floor. I made the unfortunate mistake of shipping a car to this location. I thought it would be easier but I would've been better off driving all the way up to Pleasanton. I paid $200 to ship it to Burbank only for them to not be able to find it, question me on whether the car is even for sale and then treat me like some broke a$$ piece of crap, by making me jump through hoops to do the 24 hour test drive. Apparently, my deductible was too high and they have a policy that is has to be X amount, but that amount didn't exist online or any written policy says the manager, Manuel. My salesman, Alfredo, offers the advice to "just buy it and you'll have 30 days to test drive it and if you don't like it, return it." I'm not rich and I don't care to ruin my credit. But I told myself, I already paid for shipping, I'm interested in the car, not CarMax, so I'm going to get the 24 hour test drive. I changed my deductible and finally got the car, hoping it's worth the hassle. The test drive was easily better than my experience at CarMax but not perfect. I bring the car back the next day, I like the car and I've had time to cool off from my previous experience. I've got my financing in place and I'm ready to move forward. I tell Alfredo there's problems with the one of the headlights, AC/heater and e-brake. He brings a different manager over this time, which also marked the beginning of what would be the endless barrage of demeaning comments. Regarding the e-brake he says, "Did you push the button on the brake handle?" The AC/heat creaks and moans , so the natural response from him was the car makes sounds when it's turned on. I had to provide proof in a video just to be taken seriously. Apparently, there's nothing wrong with the e-brake, it's just in my head. I was also told that I could only go to Burbank CarMax to utilize my 90 day warranty, which is bs. I gotta say, I don't believe they actually inspect their cars AT ALL, or detail them. The roof and overall interior of the car was disgusting. The tires are bald and one leaks air. The spare tire literally has a plug in a hole on the tire. The brakes started screeching that very night and haven't stopped, there's a ding in the windshield and the driver's side view mirror constantly shakes, so there's zero visibility. When it came to the financial side, Alfredo's spoken language was mansplaining. I was interested in financing for 48 months and the offer came back at 60. I looked at 48 for a lower APR but he wanted to mansplain simple interest to me like I was an idiot. Also, he tells me to electronically transfer my money before I can even see the contract. I told him I'd sign the papers then transfer funds. He said they're unable to do that. I took a break and when I came back his boss has decided to let me to go over the contract first. So why all the bs? By the end of it all, the excitement was completely sucked out of the situation and I just wanted to leave. I got a call that the car's ready. No yellow bow, no nothing. It was an awful experience that's now associated with this car. What sucks even more is that the very next weekend, my girlfriend took me to the Irvine CarMax to test drive a car. Her experience was the complete opposite. They were nice and friendly. Never kept her waiting. Didn't fight her when she said she didn't want to buy a warranty, gave her a very fair price for her trade-in and on top of that, the whole process took about an hour and a half and we were leaving in her new car, fitted with a big bow and smiling faces. They told her she could take her car to any CarMax to get it fixed. Burbank CarMax is just not worth it. Essentially, they want you to do all of the work. They want you to buy the car, spend your money, waste your time taking it for service to fix things that should've been fixed prior to selling. Avoid this place at all costs and get a car transferred to another location that knows how to offer a better experience to their customers. read more

One of the worst experiences I have ever had. Brought my car in to get the online appraisal confirmed. I then made an appointment to sell my car. They took my paperwork and said it would be 1 1/2 - 2 hours until everything would be ready. I went home and they called me when I was 5 minutes away. When I arrived they said since I was not in the building and did not go the finance office IMMEDIATELY I would be put BACK in the line and there are now 5 people ahead of me. Literally no one standing at the finance office for the last 30 minutes. When I asked where the other 5 people were, they said they were in "the process" and had yet to be called and they could not finish my transaction. The manager Jay exhibited no common sense and basically stuck to his guns. "Back of the line for you" 5 minutes!!!!! And I have to wait probably another hour or two. This is as close to being held as a hostage I've ever felt. read more

Bought a car and the parking light went out 3 weeks later. I call to schedule service and have them replace the bulb with a working one and they won't replace it unless I take the day off from work to fix it because they don't take service appts after 11am. According to them, I can't come at 2pm and have them replace the bulb and instead am required to miss an entire days worth of pay for a lightbulb that should never have gone out within less than a month of owning the car. Worst part is the service department wanted to make me seem unreasonable. Who would go without pay for a day over a lightbulb? I asked to come in at 2pm for it to be replaced and got a myriad of reasons why they could not accommodate and potentially would have to keep my car overnight. What? Ridiculous. My other option was to go elsewhere and then bring them the receipt. So now I have 2 errands to run to fix their incompetence? Awesome. Once they have your money you will get zero customer care via the service department for even the simplest of things. Ricardo (salesperson) is the only reason I'm not giving them one star-- he was good/helpful. read more

The problem is that after 90 days of buying the car, if you have any issues, the Service dept will prefer not to work with you. You have to insist for them to actually look at your car. You can also tell that they are not happy to help since you are not within those 90 days. When you call the Service dept, the call will prompt you to say whether your car was purchased within 90 days, now you know why. I worked with a rep by the name of Phil. His approach is passive aggressiveness. He let's you know by his actions that you're not welcomed there. read more

If the new owner starts committing crimes, evading tolls, getting red light tickets, be prepared for the fallout to land on YOU with a ton of bricks. UPDATE!!! Purchased a vehicle from Carmax Burbank today. Phany helped us out!!! She was excellent. Very attentive, went over every aspect of the vehicle' features. Tested the lights, turn signals, horn, trunk, performance of each vehicle. We went out for two test drives, another Volt and the Lexus CT200 Hybrid which I drove home. It was such a painless process, either in-house financing or outside lender. No trade in but that was ok. This couldn't have been easier. I highly recommend Phany and CarMax Burbank. Thank you!! Went to pick up my friend who was wanting to sell her car. She was originally quoted 2,500 and the guy she spoke to months before when she got the quote offered her 1000 less this time for no apparent reason. She came back to my car to tell me what happened and I called my dad (who's a car dealer) to see if he or anyone he knew could give her a better offer. He asked me to send him the VIN and some pictures of the car to see what he could do. We walked over to her that was car parked across from mine and the guy my friend spoke to was watching us and talking to his coworkers pointing. He then yelled, "you guys can't do that here!" and I responded "do what take pictures of my friends car?" he never came over to tell us what we were doing wrong. I'm assuming he thought she was selling the car to me on their property but if that's the case he should've politely came over and spoke to us. We felt uncomfortable and pretty pissed off like what's your deal dude?? Horrible establishment. I have sold two cars through CarMax, a Kia Optima hybrid most recently. I had one hurdle this time. Carmax offered $10,400 for the car which seemed great, four hundred more than I hoped for. When we were checking out, we discovered there was a Factory emissions recall on the car, and we had to take the car to the Kia dealership where we bought it to have the free repair done. It took two days. While we were there, I asked the dealer for a quote on the car to see if he would match Carmax. I did not tell him what Carmax had offered, and he came in at $4400, I showed him the offer by Carmax, and he was astounded. He said the Kelley blue book on it was only $8000. I said he did not take into account how few used hybrids there are and also the problem with the lack of computer chips to make new cars. Carmax was simply upfront and honest and generous.
