When I first went, I was told to bring a letter from my Credit Union that would indicate the pay-off amount in order to sell my car. So I did, 2 days later. The second time I went, I brought the letter in and I was told the VIN should be in the letter which I wish I was informed about, the first time I came in. They even asked me to access my credit union account and show them on their computer just to tell me no and I had to go back again. I was hoping this would be enough to prove the legitimacy that the amount was in fact what was stated in the letter. So much hassle to have to deal with this CarMax location, if you have other options. I would look elsewhere. read more

Got an online quote that they honored. It was an easy process in selling my SUV. Spent two hours there, but customer service was very professional. They even picked up the $250 cost of my expired registration and smog check needed. It is a business with integrity. Their quote was 80% better than the local BIDLANE in Woodland Hills!! CARMAX took care of the title transfer (I did not have my original) and gave me my liability release form. The customer service is very inconsistent with some folks being great and some who seem disinterested at best. They are also fairly unorganized and lost my paperwork after I sold them my car. When they called to ask me to redo the paperwork, there was no acknowledgement of my time or the inconvenience and I was told this is pretty common. It took me over 15 minutes after calling them back to get to the root of what they were even asking me for. Again no acknowledgement of me as a customer. Pretty frustrating. I would not return to this location to either buy a car or trade in. read more

I performed an online appraisal with CarMax and then went to this location to close out selling my car to them. When I did the online appraisal ahead of my visit, I made my best guess at all the options on my car to get a rough estimate of the price - probably what most people do. I assumed when I went to the location we could nail down an accurate appraisal by doing a complete assessment of the options and a making a fair assessment of the car condition (which was excellent, but is beside the point here). When I asked to update the appraisal with the complete list of options using the original purchase paperwork I found and brought with me on the day, they refused. They gave me some nonsense about how their in-person examination factors in all the options and that even though the final offer printout they handed me doesn't list all the car's options, they are included in their offer amount. This is not true. 1) The in-person exam is not an appraisal, it's a confirmation of the online appraisal which, as I've said, didn't factor in all the options. If their in-person inspection factored in options not included in the online appraisal then it's impossible for the appraisal value not to change, which it did not. 2) The person doing the confirmation couldn't possibly be an expert on every option on every car. 3) Telling me the printout doesn't include all the options being considered, but that I should trust that they are included sounds like a bold-faced lie. I walked out and got meaningfully higher offers from both Carvana and AutoNation. I sold the car to AutoNation in Valencia and had a wonderful and professional experience with them. Perhaps it's my fault for not being 100% exact during the online appraisal. However, their refusal to update the appraisal using the accurate details of the car in front of them and then lie about those details being considered is a bad faith attempt to take advantage of a customer. I wasn't trying to haggle, but simply wanted an accurate appraisal for a fair transaction. So, I recommend you avoid this place. Don't think that because it's a big brand that they behave any differently than your typical, shady used car dealer. If you do go, make sure your online appraisal is 100% reflective of your car. read more

Let the decision be the consumers before ship/purchase. Update: Manager reached out. They're going to spray a rubberized coating on the undercarriage(3rd party Autobody Shop). They will only cover half while I'll need to cover the half. Although I still need to remove as much of the rust myself before doing this. Not much happier. Just doing it at this point because I like the vehicle. Highly do not recommend. They sold me a car with a ton of rust. Never disclosed it, and now they refuse to help me. Dealer warranty? It's a joke. I can't believe I spent money having a car shipped to his local carmax. I specifically remember asking about rust. Salesperson told me " no there's no rust, we do no sell cars with rusted frames, as we do not want to be held liable. " I cannot believe I fell for it. They inspected it twice? Prior to coming here, I input my car that I wanted to sell and they offered me $3,100. The following week, I decided to re-shop my car again and I was offered $4k. So I made an appointment with them. I wasn't sure what to expect and was thinking it was going to take about 30 minutes for the whole transaction. I came in around 4:30pm and walked up to the welcome desk. I informed the rep that I had an appointment and showed her my offer letter. After checking the computer, she instructed me to scan the barcode and check myself in. Wasn't quite sure why she had me do this when she could have just checked me in right then and there. After I scanned the barcode and entered all of my info, I waited about 5-10 minutes and a tech came in and spoke to someone at the welcome desk for keys to a CRV. Luckily, I happened to be standing close enough to overhear and handed my keys over to him. He went to check on the exterior for a few minutes and then took it for a drive around the block. The whole process probably took no more than 15 minutes. He brought the keys back and I handed my title over to the CSR. I actually forgot the registration because I had cleaned out the glove box the day prior and must have taken it out. Because the car was registered in CA, they were able to pull that info. After waiting for about 20 minutes or so, I finally walked back up to the CSR and asked if she had an update. She said I was next in line. One thing I noticed while waiting is that there were a lot of CarMax staff just standing around. I think there must have been about 7-10 people just walking around. Instead, it took about 1.5 hours for them to complete the transaction with a check in hand. I don't have anything bad to say about this CarMax location or my experience with it. Very very disappointed, I went there last week and got a quote to sell my car, after I decided they told me to bring some documents, I prepared them and got back there. They told me it's going to take about 40 minutes to do all the paperworks . after an hour I asked that how longer is going to take bc I have to go to work, tgen the lady said as looking for my files, after checking all the desks found my giles then she told me tgat they haven't started yet, which means I had to wait another 40 min. They took a lyft for me to go home and take my other car, after i got home they called and Left a message that we cannot buy your car because your car is under ...... company and we don't work with them. DO NOT USE CARMAX. I sold my vehicle to them on March 10th of this year. They tell you they will take care of everything. This includes registration. Then, I received NINE different tollway violations because they sold the car to a dealer, and the car's registration remained in my name. They make you send every single ticket to their tickets and towing dept. so that they can "take care of it" for you. Only problem is, after that ticketing entity was told that I was not the registered owner, I received a ticket from another toll evasion entity in California, 405 Express Lanes. Over the course of the past month, I have spoken to the manager at the Roscoe Blvd./Canoga Park location, Sean Ruiz, who only told me to keep sending violations incurred by the person driving the car I no longer own and to call customer relations for Carmax. Oh, and he said, "I'm sorry" a lot. I called customer relations, and they were NO HELP. The first person I spoke with had the job of making me feel taken care of...then I got the call from the person who supposedly understood California law. Wrong. She told me to continue to send all tickets to tickets and towing. She, nor anyone at Carmax, would give me the name/number to the legal dept, to the direct supervisor of the manager at Carmax on Roscoe Blvd, nor to anyone who understands California law or could detach my name from the registration of the car they bought from me. Let me reiterate...I do not own the car anymore! Carmax bought it for 9k on March 10th. BUT, because they take NO responsibility for the dealer that they sold the car to nor do they take responsibility for transferring the registration out of my name or being registered AT ALL, I am STILL, on June 24th, the registered owner of a car that can incur tickets, do illegal activity, and anything else. So, for as long as this person wants, they can illegally drive the car I no longer own, registered in my name. That's what you have to look forward to if you sell your car to Carmax. This is the first time I've ever used Carmax. We had recently purchased used car from carmax and brought it back for some 90-day warranty service and they were great. They couldn't fix everything in one visit but I was particularly impressed with how they addressed the A/C. We brought it in because it wasn't very cold. Turns out the freon was low, but they went above and beyond and found a small leak in the compressor. They could have easily said the freon was low, topped it off and sent me on the way. By the time it leaked out again I'd be out of my warranty period. In fact, I suspect that's how many shops would operate. But they went above and beyond and were honest about the root problem and ordered a new compressor to replace under warranty. I'll definitely be purchasing again from Carmax! read more
