If I could leave 0 stars I would. Modesto Car Max has the worst customer service ever. I recommend buying a used car elsewhere. My experience on February 1st 2020 I am a Spanish speaker and came in ready to buy a car. I was told to wait for a bilingual English/Spanish rep to assist me. This is completely understandable but the 3 hours and 45 minutes without any updates is blatantly disrespectful. I came in today at 2:45 PM And spoke with a lady up in the front who advised me that she would be with me shortly as she was the only Spanish speaker. She advised me that the wait would be up to 2 hours which I was Okay with due to my inability to speak English. I patiently waited till 6:30 PM and was never approached or told anything. Zero communication from anyone. No status updates nada. At that time and another Spanish speaking customer walked in and she promptly assisted the customer. I decided to leave at that time. How rude was that. felt at that point as I was invisible and my business to them did not matter. I feel so disrespected. I will not return. The customer service department can't get any worse. No one answer the phones to make a service appointment. I literally had to drive over to make my appointment. So 10:30 dropped my car off n heard NOTHING until I finally went back at 4:45 and at that time "Oh we hv to order a part." Really you could have called me to let me know that n I could have picked my car back up. We made an appointment to go there and buy a car for my son. When we got there, there was no one to help us. The excuse was that our call was transferred to main office (I called and main office was closed today), and they didn't get the appointment in time. They were going to find someone to help us. after 30 minutes there was no one to help us. We asked to talk to the manager, but the front door secretary said she is the manager. We talked to another sales person, he said he is the manager and will find someone..Seems like everyone has title of manager.. after a few minutes we left. Buying a car from Carmax and my Salesman Peter was the easiest experience. I recieved a great interest rate on my car purchase. The next few weeks tested my patience, my grace, and understanding of owning a used car. I purchased the Max Plus plan and it was absolutely worth every penny. I would be in a serious financial hole with this car, had I not purchased the plan. Next, I want to thank Jessika and her service team for seeing me through the process of each situation with my car and it's tempermental nature, it has been a journey. One key note, treat your service people with respect, they are people behind the uniform. I do think some things should be caught in advance, but that would be fool-hardy, since if it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm thinking I will get another car here, to fit my outdoor lifestyle. I bought my car in Dec 2017 and it was a wonderful experience. J let me go out and look at the cars and was not pushy about me buying. I found a few cars I liked so we sat in them and I told him I wanted to get approved to buy first. I was approved and went to test drive one car I really liked. I decided to apply for a loan and was approved with a low down payment. The paperwork and getting insurance took a very long time but I walked out that day with a pretty much brand new car (only 4000 miles on it) for a great price! I would for sure go back! Update May 2022: I purchased my second car at Carmax, this time all through the app, including home delivery! It was like Door Dashing a car. I had it transferred from Sacramento to Modesto, then in a little over a week, it was delivered to my driveway and they took another vehicle as a trade-in. (If you don't have a trade-in and don't need a transfer, it could likely happen in a few days). Everything (including the signing paperwork) was done over the web (thank you Sharon and Jamal). The only caveat is you sign all the paperwork and transfer a down payment _before_ you get to test drive the car--but there's a 30 day return window. I'd do it again and highly recommend if you know the _exact car year, make, model, and trim package you want. Even the delivery time was spot-on. read more

So it was a great start very nice sales lady kind of suckered my wife into her dream car so I can't complain good experience. Until 3 weeks into owning a 30k vehicle and some major lights kick on. There hard to deal with its 3 weeks until it can be seen at any partner mechanic and another month at car max whish means they are backed up probably because vehicles keep breaking down there selling. The issue is they'll fix it but won't give us a loaner to be able to pick our kids up from school. If it's only a day job then no loaner. The closest mechanic is 1 hour away from our house. The diagnostics will be 2 hours and until they know no loaner. So they won't give in give a loaner technically telling us they won't fix the problem that hasn't even been a month compared to 90 days because without a loaner we can't get the job done. The lady on the phone said that it was our problem figure it out I can't give you a loaner until I know it's more then a day which by then we'd be to late to get our kids from school. Can't keep the kids home because the shuttle won't take the wife and kids. So we got spend 30k on a new vehicle have serious issues not even a month in and there not even willing to compromise do anything to help they got there money. I've been to many dealerships bought many cars and never have I dealt with someone being so rude and whatever after you just bought a expensive vehicle and spent allot of money with them. This evening, my family and I went into Carmax on McHenry Ave. We wanted to get our truck appraised, and look at a new vehicle. As we entered the store, no employee greeted us, not even a nod, though about 3-4 employees stopped what they were doing and stared at us for a good 10 seconds. Think 1980s slow mo movie just before the slow clap. Anyway, we stood at the front desk for at least 7 minutes before anyone walked up to us. She put us on the list, said she would grab someone, and promptly disappeared. After another 7-8 minutes, I approached another employee to get some help, and he said we'd only been on the list for a few minutes, and he would help us soon, and walked away. Meanwhile, 3 other employees from when we first walked in were standing huddled near a cubicle chit chatting. We walked the lot, and found a couple of vehicles that we were somewhat interested in, but after 25 total minutes, still no employee bothered to even speak with us, much less help us with choosing a vehicle, and appraising our vehicle. We left, and as we were leaving, I told the person who was sitting there at this point what a horrible experience it was to be ignored, and tossed off, and to remove us from the list. We've purchased two vehicles at Carmax in Austin, Texas, and both times, the transaction was smooth, and if not enjoyable, at least not unpleasant, which prompted us to return. I will never set foot in there again. Meanwhile, we drove straight to Central Valley Dodge, was greeted within minutes, and V. was amazing. She helped us pick out a great vehicle, had mine appraised, ran the numbers, and had the test drive completed all in about 2 hours. As it was getting close to closing time, we had to pause the transaction, but will return tomorrow and pick up our Dodge! Screw Carmax. Their customer service is horrific. Their prices are outrageous. They are mighty proud of a 12 year old Acura with 103K, listing that thing for $18K! Their selection is pitiable. read more

So I went and asked if they had Hondas within a certain price range and was pointed at which row of cars to look. I look, by myself, and I didn't see the car they had told me about. So I go back in, I told him I'm having a hard time finding the vehicle and again the guy just points back to where I was. So I go back and walking up and down the lot, by myself trying to find this honda. Two employees walk past me while I'm in the middle of their car lot and no one even greeted me. The guy that pointed it to me, I'm assuming is just a receptionist considering he didn't offer to help me. I was at CarMax Modesto with my son and wife to pick up the car that my son selected, we were there 2 weeks prior to make the selection and get all the details worked out about financing and co-sign. Jeniffer our sales person treated us super nice and walk us thru very smooth. However when they asks us both my son and I for our social security cards it became a problem, somehow Jeniffer went to get the store manager, the manager Ashley and 2 other employees approached us at the desk and asks us firm and direct that we are not welcome at this CarMax or any other CarMax cause there was a problem.......I ask "what what is going On?" She refuse to tell us any reason and handed me a piece of paper with corporate number. As we stood stunned i ask Jeniffer, what just happened? She was also shocked, she couldn't say nothing to me. I ask to speak to another manager but all Ashley did was point to her chest and with a big smile told me I'm the manager and only one in the whole store. As I walk out of the store I got a hold of another employee and ask her to step outside so I can ask a question. As I walk out all of the employees were all stearin at us. I was so embarrassed....... so I ask the lady why were we kicked out like that. She told me that My son lied about he's immigration status that he's SS number is not valid. That they don't sell cars to illegal immigrants , I was livid!! My son is an American citizen born and raised, and even if my son was illegal, CarMax won't sell a car to him? also my son is banned from ever stepping on any other CarMax dealership. CarMax code of conduct 34 states policy against discrimination and harassment. I know that my son and I was discriminated today. I hope CarMax corporate will contact me. I also recorded the incident on my phone for evidence. My wife was in tears for the embarrassment and humiliation and my son was in complete shock with he's first car purchase experience. I was put on the list to get seen and drive a truck today, let me tell you that there was 1 person in this whole store ahead of me. The "system" deleted me 2 times and then they said they called me 2 times as well, and my phone has been on for the whole time. I got no calls and was deleted 2 times. This just pisses me off because this isn't the only time that this has happened here to me and my buddy. There are also 5 car salesmen just sitting and talking on their cellphones. I asked if they have anyone coming in and they said "no, we are just waiting for someone to come in and test drive " which then I said I've been waiting and they said nothing and looked back at each other. I genuinely wish I could give more than a 5 star rating! I will NEVER buy a car from anywhere beside CarMax. No annoying commissioned salespeople, no haggling, great prices and selection. They gave me an unbeatable deal on my trade in (I got multiple quotes and no one came close to CarMax) and was able to find the EXACT car I wanted on their website. Despite the car being out of state I was able to ship it to my store for a nominal fee. The financing process was easy and I was able to purchase a 100k warranty for peace of mind. Super easy, fun, friendly and transparent experience. They cannot be beat. Also, their iphone app is a fun feature for tracking my cars documents electronically (registration card, insurance card) and the maintenance of my vehicle (they also service the vehicles there too!). Do yourself a favor; don't buy a new or used car without checking our the CarMax way of doing business. read more

We had a great experience. Good price on our new vehicle and a great price on our trade in. The transfer was easy and the truck arrived before everyone thought. It was just as described and in the condition promised by my sales person. The truck had more options than listed which actually made it a better deal for it due to all the options it had. Price was set at where I would try to get a new one at so I didn't mind the no haggle policy. One thing I did notice, although a very helpful and professional salesman, he did not know much at all about the vehicle I picked out. I recommend the buyer do all the research with the info and pictures as you can. I actually taught the salesman a few things about the truck he was selling me.. not a huge deal. I highly recommend CarMax in Modesto, CA for anyone looking to buy a car. Our first experience was several weeks ago when my 21 year old son went in to purchase his own very first car. We worked with Niko who was amazing through the entire experience. I haven't purchased a car for a long time and I was blown away by how smooth the process was at CarMax. There was no pressure from suited up sales people or managers going back and forth discussing how much more money they can squeeze out of you. Instead it was just a normal person working with my son to get him his first car. Financing was incredibly fast and there were options to choose from based on your credit, down payment and desired monthly payment. My son was in and out with his first car within just a few hours. The process was so smooth that my husband and I went back just recently to trade in a 2014 Dodge Charger with high mileage and the trade-in amount was about $3,000 more than what we had anticipated which allowed us to pay off the remaining loan on the car and put a decent down payment on a newer vehicle with much less mileage. Again, we were amazed by the awesome service we were provided by Niko and we were taken care of right away. Within one month's time we have two cars that we purchased from CarMax and I highly recommend anyone looking to get into another car, to go here definitely. I also had to take my son's car in for some minor service covered under warranty and the service department is also amazing. I worked with Miriam and she provided excellent customer service...very friendly and kept me updated on all that the technician fixed and when the car was ready to pick up. Bought my car from them a little over a year ago from Carmax. Luckily I purchased the extended warranty, because my car broke down on me yesterday. Had it towed to their service department last night. Today I finally get told by them after multiple calls and messages; they tell me they can't even "look" at the car for a week! When I ask about the rental coverage with the warranty, they tell me I cannot get a rental until it's diagnosed. Even speaking to the service manager, they wouldn't work with me to at least get a diagnosis so I could get a rental. After hours of wasted time with them, had to have the car towed to a different shop who is willing to work with me. Francis should not be in he position he is in cause he was the worst manager to deal with of them all. Francis spoke to us one time about our concerns and decided he was "too good" to call us back and we have not heard from him since. Steven "tried" to help but after we got to a certain point we apparently hit a default button in his brain because he gave us the same bull as everyone else as to why we couldn't get any further help. Our sales associate Gabby (I think that was her name) was super sweet but did not actually tell us anything about the Max Care that people seem to swear by and that could have possibly gotten us further in this process than where we are at now. Your corporate associates were the most helpful, until we repeated ourselves so many times they all got tired of hearing our concerns and started reading the same stupid script. The fact that I have previously worked with someone in the Modesto location (I will not name this individual), and know three associates in the Livermore location and still got worse customer service than going to Walmart is disgusting. We chose to come to this location due to the volume of cars put out of this location. I had seen reviews that this location was great and that people were so happy with their purchase so we decided we should transfer a car in and do everything through Modesto. Little did we know we would have the worst experience ever and get stuck with a car that makes us feel unsafe for both myself and my son. You could make sure your sales associates are better trained on the services and warranties you sell so that customers are better informed when making a large purchase. Second, when a car is transferred in you should do a FULL inspection just in case other locations do a bad job or miss something. Thirdly, you can learn to take care of your customers. Car max is all about customer service (or so your ads claim) yet no one at the Modesto location has tried to help when multiple concerns are brought up with a car recently purchased. I should have and will go to a car dealership other than Car Max in the future. All we ever wanted to do was to get a simple exchange but your team would rather read the same script to us on how "there's nothing we can do" or "let's get you in for a service appointment 2-4 weeks out". How in the world is this taking care of the customer?! To top everything off with the countless redundant encounters we were promised a top off on gas for the inconvenience for having to drive so far to get all of this "taken care of" and you guys couldn't even do that!!! read more

Ok so I wasn't big on reviews until my experience at Carmax of Modesto today. Needless to say it was stressfully unpleasant and I absolutely feel that if I could help even one person avoid what my wife and I went through today then it would all be worth it. I found a nice car for about $15K at the Carmax of Modesto. I called and made an appointment with a pleasant sales-lady who told me to come down and look at the car and they would remove it from the website for up to 3 hours so as not to risk the car being transferred or sold out from underneath me. I verified this when after our appointment was made, I couldn't even find the car listed anymore on the Carmax.com website. I called the night before my appointment and spoke to a freshman and inexperienced car sales-boy. I tell you, this kid is not long for the car sales business. No he is destined for something far greater...maybe as a manager of the local gas station because not only did he confirm our appointment for 12:00pm today (good job there)...but he even went so far as to lie and tell me he went out to confirm the car was still available. Long story short, I called Mr. Strawberry Shortcake Sales-boy the morning of our appointment to confirm one more time that the car was still available because, as I told him, I did not want to drive 60 miles (there and back) just to find out the car was transferred or sold. Yes he says, all is good. 45 minutes and half a tank later, I show up at the dealership where we were greeted by someone other than sales-boy who we had been working with. When we asked to speak to our original sales-boy so we could make sure he would get the commission if we decided to buy, he presented himself and mumbled something about how he could not help us today because he was in the e-commerce department and did not do floor sales. Make sense? No? Well me neither, but that should have been enough of a red flag that some shenanigans were about to go down. My pregnant wife and I shrugged it off because we really need a 4-door car for our baby girl on the way. The saga continued when a half-shaven salesman we were dumped off to started walking us across the car lot to the furthest point possible saying things like, "I know it's around here somewhere. Wait...I think it's over here. I'm almost sure of it. No? Darn...they must have alphabetized the car lot. Ok, let's try going back where we came from, I've got a good feeling about it being over there at the other opposite end of the lot." So by this time my wife and I are starting to look around for the hidden cameras because this guy's (?) bad acting was straight out of a tween low budget date movie. We return back to the sales floor and lo-and-behold what do you think was parked right outside of the Carmax entrance where we were originally greeted when we first walked in? You guessed it! And the icing on the cake was that the car had a big TRANSFER/SOLD sign on the windshield. The only explanation we received when I asked to speak to our original sales-boy and management as to why we had been forced to waste a 60-mile trip when I had called that morning and was told the car was available boils down to this: "Well, this happens all the time and it's really your fault because you should have filled out a credit application the night before so we could have held the car for you." I will close with simply saying that while my Carmax experience may be the exception to the rule, it is by no means unique I'm sure. Our family has owned 12 cars in our lifetime and we only buy used cars because of the value of buying used vs. new. This was a chance for Carmax to make lifelong customers out of us, but instead they exhibited an unprofessional atmosphere and demonstrated their complete and utter disrespect for customers feelings and time due to their atrocious lack of customer service and obvious gamesmanship. I know the economy sucks, I know the car market is slow... I am not an idiot. And honestly, that in itself kept me from making much of an effort to sell my extra car privately for the past 10 months. I thought only a CarMax type place would pan out and I lowered expectations quite a bit.... Hence my willingness to accept WELL BELOW market value for my car, when I drove over an hour to this CarMax location. I walked in with the ballpark quote a Roseville CarMax employee had given me over the phone in mind, and quickly realized that quote was "not supposed to be given out" and they weren't going to offer me anything close to it. Nice. Ok, so onto the minutia of this hellish trek out to Modesto on the first very hot day of the Spring......... First, I had to con a family member into driving a second car along since I had every intention of selling my car that day (given they came close to the ballpark quote I'd been given). So tally up two full tanks of gas. It was a good 100 degrees and the whole drive smelled like cow poo. Yum.. We arrive and see it's a massive location with tons of cars and even more employees ready to pounce. We walk in, already knowing a name of a sales rep who had spoken to me over e-mail.... only to be pummeled by the very same sales rep with a 10 minute canned shpeel about why we should BUY one of their cars. When he finally pauses long enough for me to interrupt, I let him know we're here to SELL - and we see the visible disappointment in his face, and are herded onto another area of the building to sit with several other glum-looking sweaty people... It takes the inspection guy literally less than 10 minutes to return with his assessment. He tells me what I already know - the car's mechanically in great shape, the new paint job is shiny and lovely and unfortunately we have over 100k miles which means they'll be low balling me to the extreme (aka offering "wholesale price").... I nod my head, waiting to hear a figure.... and then they offer me $2K - for a car that's less than 10 years old, in VERY GOOD condition with a KBB value of $4500 (which is already a $2K drop from what it was worth a year ago). Its only "defect" is that I have 10K more miles than they "prefer" to sell on their lot..... I am not remotely amused or interested. I tell him that a Roseville person explained, knowing the exact same information and details, that I would more likely be offered $3K (and the car would turn around and eventually be sold to some sucker for $7-8K). This was already too low, and I was barely willing to accept that... and I definitely will not accept $2K. The only reason I went to Modesto over Roseville is that I was also told they quoted similarly and Modesto was a slightly shorter drive... He has no answer for me, so he brings in whatever other salesmen he can grab to stand in my face and give me canned shpeel after shpeel about how I don't understand the market and yada yada, this is a good deal, yada yada... they continue to condescend to us for a good 30 mins or so of nonstop one-sided babble. Whatever. I went home and put maybe an hour of total effort into phone calls and emails to find a serious buyer -- and received multiple offers in LESS THAN A WEEK. In the end, it was sold for TWICE the CarMax offer, and with much less hassle and zero driving through cow poo-smelling zones. Moral of the story - do NOT come here to sell a car unless you A) have less than 100K miles, B) are willing to accept below KBB value and C) don't mind gambling with a hellish drive that could quite possibly be fruitless. If your car has more than 100K miles, seriously just sell privately or go to some local lots for quotes. CarMax will NOT give you a reasonable offer, especially not this location. read more

4/8/16 8am Take Jeep in for check engine light on from recent purchase about 2 weeks back. I was informed by Jessika that they would call me asap when they find out what is the problem. CarMax offers to shuttle me to work. 4/8/16 9:30am called and informed it's an emission sensor and my car would be sent across the street to Jeep dealer to be repaired. I was informed as well about a scratch on front that they would repair because it's something they should have taken care of. Specifically informed by Jessika she would follow up by 4pm because I had no car and she would take care of me. 4/8/16 4:38pm No call back. I call CarMax and I was informed Jessika went to lunch. Told by another rep that I could call back. I said no. I said I need my car please find out. Rep calls Jeep and tells me the car is ready and they will pick up and I can pick it up at 6pm. 4/8/16 4:50pm Call Jeep and find out my car was ready hours ago. 4/8/16 6:05pm go to pick up car from carmax. I ask for car pick up. Lady prints invoice and tells me to sign. I have not even seen my car yet and I question the honesty of the service center. She says to sign and I read it and sign and ask for my car. Find out my car was sitting in a public parking lot. Find rock ding on back panel and ask to talk to a manager. Manager Oscar tells me they will fix it and to bring car in Monday morning and they will give me a loner. 4/11/16 8am I am now upset that I am going out of my way on such poor service and a facility that does not honor true customer Service. Steve looks at car with Jessika and Steve say it's just a smudge and needs to be cleaned. Jessika adds insult to injury and just lies that she called me multiple times. Jessika became defensive and I asked for here to leave. After Jessikas poor attitude and the lack of trust I ask to be sent to another carmax. Steve says he will call them and they will call me. He also lets me know the ops manager Frances will call me. Fresno is on my way and they get Fresno Carmax to call me. They do and say they are just going to send me to an offsite location and Carmax Modesto can do the same for local. I asked for a call from Frances the operations manager he has failed to call me all day. I now do not have what carmax said they were offering me and regret of such a horrible decision to buy form this place. They say they are Americas number one but be aware of the shady tactics they use to brush you off. CarMax simply spends thousands of dollars advertising it's self as a straight forward "honest" reseller of used cars....but they're not any different than any other used car dealer.. It's simply an advertising gimmick to make you think you're getting better value than the dealer down the street. DON'T BE FOOLED into buying a car because the dealer offers you a certificate. You, like so many others who have purchased and complained about CarMax, will find your self spending a lot of time and money trying to get CarMax to make repairs that supposedly are covered under their their warranty program only to find out they are not or they make a repair but it's not a good repair. The CarMax business model is simply a numbers game designed to sell cars to people who can be fooled into thinking they are getting a better running used car with a warranty. Their so called certified program is much like a coat of wax and a quart of engine treatment.The only repairs made to the cars are cosmetic and the needed repairs to keep the car running until the warranty period ends leaving the customer to deal with the more expensive repairs, like over due timing belt replacements and routine transmission servings...things too expensive for CareMax or any used car dealer to pay for before selling you the car. If you're going to purchase a used car from a dealer, buy one from a dealership that really cares about it's reputation..., someone who wants you to come back and purchase again in the future, such as.... buy a used Ford from your local ford dealer...etc. Also....have the car checked out by your mechanic. Just because the seller is offering you a piece of paper that claims you have some sort of warranty doesn't mean there is nothing wrong with the car.... Remember there is a reason why someone got rid of this car in the first place and usually it's because it's going to cost more to repair than to replace. read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE DEPARTMENT! I've had to take my car in twice for repairs within two months once for the air box being loose and the second because my driver side seat assembly had to be replaced. I took my car in the first time and IT TOOK A WEEK TO GET MY CAR BACK! They said they were going to give me a car just like mine and ended up giving me a completely different car that I was totally unfamiliar with and didn't even know how to drive. I told them I needed my car back so I could be at a family members surgery in San Francisco and didn't want to drive this foreign and unfamiliar car in that stressful environment. They called me THE DAY AFTER I LEFT to tell me my car was ready. The worst part was no one was giving me updates on my car. I called everyday trying to talk to someone who could tell me what was going on and they kept saying they'd call me back and let me know. I NEVER ONCE GOT A PHONE CALL BACK! At first I brushed it off figures they were busy. However two months later I had to take my car back in because the drivers seat won't move. They said I had to take it to a vender location because they weren't able to look at my car because there wasn't enough mechanics. They tell me the whole assembly has to be replaced AND THATS IT! No one tells me when it's going to be ready, if I'm going to get a loaner car NOTHING! I called the main Modesto location and told them what the technician said. They said they would call the vendor and give me a call back. ITS BEEN THREE HOURS AND NO CALL! I get that y'all maybe busy busy as an essential worker I NEED MY CAR AND I NEED INFORMATION. I've called at least four times today alone trying to figure out what is going on with my car and no one is answering anything. EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED! This is the first time I've bought from CarMax because everyone said it was a great place to buy a car. WORST DECISION EVER! read more

The Z has been fairly unreliable and a maintenance whore, But that is of no fault to Carmax's and the extended warranty I bought with the car worked perfectly aside from my $300 deductible... That BMW we bought too is also having it's fair share of working out the extended warranty... With the 370Z, I put a whopping 13K miles on it in the 9 months I've had it... The car has begun to get quite small for me so I thought about seeing what I can get on a trade in. So I came back here and the blonde lady that baby sat me through the appraisal was very nice. The appraisal went as to be expected, Fairly painless and problem free. They shot an offer of $17K... I owe $16K on it while I paid $28K for it just this February... But trade in is always a lot less than retail price. Curious what someone else would say about the trade in, I went to Livermore Toyota to see what trade in they'll give me if I buy a new car... To my dismay... The car comes back as "accident reported October 08 2009" on the carfax... When I bought the car, I was not told of this and was actually shown and TOLD the exact opposite. I remember the sales lady (at the fairfield carmax) saying as she went down the paper work explaining everything "heres the autocheck report, which is like carfax... looks like it has no accidents or anything out of the ordinary on it". Livermore Toyota told me it had frame damage, i contacted carmax the very next morning on facebook and had the car inspected by a body shop out here... They found no damage to the frame rails but found clear indications of a front right impact. The bumper reinforcement bar is cracked, the bumper cover is not the original (paint began peeling off it too), the 1 headlight was replaced (i knew of this but thought it was for a different reason), the hood and fender were repainted, It's missing a few parts for the bumper and the bumper absorber foam is held together by tape. Wouldn't this show up in a 125+ point inspection?... The kind carmax folk on facebook contacted the service manager "Francis" at this carmax and had him call me to bring it in. I did the same day I got the body shop to check it out... the mechanic there started explaining to me what they check for starting from the rear, he reached up behind the bumper cover and touched the bumper reinforcement bar and said "we check these for dents or cracks"... I calmly said, the front one is cracked... He shuffled over quickly and had the splash guard on the floor as the manager watched with us. once that splash guard was down, I pointed to it... He said yeah, it's cracked then the manager and mechanic said something to eachother. We had debates going the entire time... I had my mother with me because my family knows i'm very passive in person and emotionless... But for the first time in my life, i got furious and raised my voice... Francis offered to replace the cracked support bar... But that doesn't fix the fact it's carfax says it was wrecked, While I was told otherwise when I paid full price for a non wrecked car less than a year ago... He kept saying that it wasn't his department, that they sell wrecked cars all the time without knowing it... Even gave an example of a Porsche Boxster having everything firewall forward replaced from a wreck and it being fixed so well they couldn't tell. That the only way they figured it out was because a service tech there used to work at the body shop that did the front end swap on the Porsche... He said they bought the car back. EDIT: After over a week of back and fourth with corporate, the facebook people who supposedly talk to the modesto management. They will not do anything aside from fixing the bumper support which should have been repaired before purchase. The 125+ point inspection is bogus, I was told they are not obligated to tell a customer of a previously wrecked car as long as the autocheck and frame is fine, Their staff is not helpful when there's a problem, their responses are scripted and repetitive (Word for word)... It is no better than buying a car anywhere else, At least somewhere else you'll get actual people not trained robots of people and have a higher chance of getting someone with a shred of honesty else where. They are a multi million dollar corporation after all and money is their top priority. Do yourself a favor and don't go to any carmax. I can't respond to "Jennifer" as there's no comment section so this edit is just for you Jennifer.... Let me break it down. Your "transparency" is BS, I was told over the phone that you guys are not obligated to disclose an accident as long as the autocheck says clear and theres no frame or flood damage. I have it recorded somewhere i think. The frame is fine, I agree. But the safety equipment (bumper integrity) was not... I hear you guys for the thousandth time you'll fix it. But no, It should of been done before I bought the car and should of been caught in the 125+ point inspection. read more

I purchased a vehicle here at Carmax Modesto over a year asgo and financed it with them. I made an agreement to receive a monthly payment coupon book to make payments (victim of ID theft and don't use automatic withdrawal). After my first coupon book ran out, Carmax auto finance refused to honor our agreement to send me another, forcing me to use their on-line payment service. I've tried to resolve this at different management levels, several times only getting a very nice F $!# u from them each time. CarMax refuses to assist me to this date. I will have to resort to refinancing with another bank. With my experince and reading other reviews it's obvious this business has ZERO honor and integrity for after sales care. read more

Willing to commit fraud and break the law to sell some cars -- I think that's all that sums up the integrity of this dealership. My brother-in-law was looking for a car, but he's a student and doesn't work that many hours. No being sure if he would get approved for financing or not, I tell him to go to his bank and try to get an auto loan for $5K -- being he makes so little, he got denied. I tell him to just go to a dealership and talk to a finance guy. He goes and they approve him at a loan for 10%. Now for the fraud and breaking the law -- my brother-in-law tells them he makes about $6,500 a year working about 13 hours a week. That's about $540 a month. The finance guy, not liking such a odd number, "rounds up" to $4000 a month. Approved. Problem solved. What a shady place. Being curious as I am I ask him to go to another, less known dealership and try to get approved. So he went to another place, talk to the finance guy for a minute -- when the finance guy heard how much he made, he simply told him no one would approve him (unless he wants to pay some private party like 40% interest). I would say "maybe it's just this finance guy" but anyone who works in a place where they aren't afraid to go this far, aren't afraid of the consequences which means they either have the okay or know others are doing it. read more

The car: Good condition in appearance. Drove well. Nothing noticeably wrong when I left with it. After about a week it became obvious that one/more wheels bearings were in very bad shape. Also, BOTH of the front ball joints are worn and make cracking noises. Forget the 30-day warranty as it was my only transportation and the dealer was almost three hours from where I live. Point is, these problems were probably known and not disclosed to me before sale. The financing: I'm going to have to admit some fault on my part on this one -- I didn't really understand what I was doing and should have sought outside advise before making an important financial decision. Having said that, CarMax straight up lied to me on several occasions about how the financing worked. It wasn't until several months later that I realized all of these things. I think this is a good old-fashioned example of a kid (me) being too naive and trusting of the big-bad-world. Shame on me for being that way. Seriously. But the fact stands, these guys are the same as any used car salesmen a**holes. I wouldn't go there again (or perhaps any used car dealer -- it's just a bad idea.) read more

I have had the pleasure of working with a few employees here and would like to share my experience. I was in a really bad car accident in February this year, if you have been through this you know finding something you feel safe in, is really hard. We wanted to sell our vehicle to Carmax and had some situations that occurred not with them, but with our registration and finance/lienholder company. Unbeknownst to us the lien had not been done properly with DMV and Vicky at the business office was extremely helpful in explaining everything, and offering all the options and alternatives she could think of to help us. I cannot say enough how helpful and patient she was with everything, a golden star employee! I had also spoken with Steve, the manager, prior and after this came up and he was just as patient and helpful. And when finalizing the paperwork Claudia was yet another employee who was just as helpful. We don't need a car now but the next time we do, we will not hesitate to go see them. My first and last time buying a car from them. They sold me a faulty car. He started messing up two days after I bought it so I sent it back to be looked at and was told that my car will have to sit there for 3 weeks until someone can even look at it and gave me a small loaner car when I purchased a suv so clearly the car they gave me is too small. I know they do not expect me to pay for something and I do not even have it in my possession. Prompt greeting at the door. Awkward service. Low-ball resale quotes. You are asigned a "dealer" (not sure exactly their title) upon arrival. *Found out that most of the cars on their lot are returned lease vehicles and rentals. Please, keep that in mind when you consider their pricing. Our lady seemed like she was going to give us space when we first arrived. She cut us loose in the car lot while we waited for our appraiser. Once we were called inside, she was attached to our hip. She sat with us in the waiting room (I know, most people would say that's nice but is was uncomfortable to feel like we had to make conversasion for the hour that we were there), she wanted to talk about semi-personal, random things, and at times it was awkward and forced. The price that they offered us was way lower than Kelly blue book, so we declined and went on our way. It wasn't for us... that's all I can say. read more

So I thought I had found my dream car...unfortunately it was at Carmax. The thing that bothered me the most is that they push their financing on you hard. Come to find out - the only way you can actually buy their cars it to either walk in with cash or use their "3 for free"/"temporary financing". But I was already pre-approved & heard some horror stories about their not so temporary financing - so I just wanted to come back the next day. That was a huge ordeal because they didn't want to hold the truck for me (even though the salesman said he would when I talked to him prior on the phone) & then I needed a signed purchase contract from them in order to get the check from my bank...but of course they only way they would give you one is if you signed for Carmax's financing. It was a headache & I almost gave in. But while I was waiting to get off work, my boyfriend was doing some research on Carmax on as a company, heard that Carmax buys cars from dealers who bought back cars from customers that should have been lemon lawed. Which now makes a lot of sense because I was reading reviews talking about how crappy their service department is while customers were dealing reoccurring problems....Very disturbing but smart of them...let's sell messed up cars with extended service plans, so they keep coming back to us to fix them, wooo who $$$$. Bottom line - I wasn't comfortable doing business with them, didnt think it was worth possibly jacking up my credit & possibly getting a lemon of a car. I really recommend doing some research about this company before you think about buying from them...it's not hard to find. read more
