CarMax has great customer service--until you purchase the car. After that, getting help can feel like an entirely different experience. I purchased an extended warranty for $5,000+ based largely on the way the warranty was presented to me. I was told that if I had repairs done at CarMax, there would be a $0 deductible and a loaner vehicle. What I was not told is that the loaner is apparently only available after CarMax has had the vehicle for 24 hours and determines that the repair qualifies for a loaner. I also wasn't told that I would need to drop the vehicle off the night before. That creates a major problem for customers. You have to find a way to get your car to CarMax the night before, find a ride home, arrange transportation for potentially an unknown amount of time, and then simply wait to find out whether CarMax will provide a loaner. I have been trying to get this warranty situation resolved for months, and it has been extremely frustrating. At this point, I'm being told that taking the vehicle to a dealer may be the only practical way to get it repaired. But doing so means a $50 deductible plus $55 per day for a loaner. So my question is: Will CarMax reimburse me for those costs when the warranty was sold to me under the impression that repairs at CarMax would involve a $0 deductible and a loaner? I understand that warranties have terms and conditions, but there is a big difference between having terms and selling a warranty based on benefits that are extremely difficult to actually use. Customers should be given the full picture before spending $5,000+ on an extended warranty. Unfortunately, this experience has completely changed my opinion of CarMax. I will never buy another vehicle from CarMax, and I'll be going back to traditional dealerships in the future. My advice to anyone considering CarMax: Know exactly how the warranty works before you buy it. Don't rely solely on the selling points you're given at the time of purchase. Ask what happens when you actually need a repair, how long your vehicle has to be at CarMax, when a loaner becomes available, and what your options are if you need to use a dealership instead. Impossible to easily test drive their automobiles, especially don't like it when you ask to test drive more than one automobile. We went to do a test drive and decided we didn't like the one we drove so the sales guy said you can choose only one more to test drive so he brought us a car that smelled like smoke, we were not happy with that vehicle or the sales guy who was not very friendly. We ended up going to Carmax in Shaumurg and guess what? she was amazing sales person who went out of her way to allow us to test drive car number three! She made a SALE on car #3 she was very personable and accommodating. maybe Naperville shop should meet with Shaumburg shop and take notes on how to treat customers. read more

A few mo's ago, I bought a vehicle from the Naperville Carmax off RT 59. It turned out to be leaking massive amounts of oil. I brought it back a cpl days later & swaped it for another vehicle, I had my guys at AAA look at it, they gave me a list of 3 or 4 big issues and told me to take it right back as well. I was then given another vehicle, same situation (different issues). I was them put into another vehicle. My guys at AAA said No rear breaks (about 2mm). I told Carmax. They had me come back a wk or so later to have the brakes done. A few wks later I bring it back due to my Pasenger Airbag no activating when my wife sits there. Before coming, I again had my guys at AAA look at it. They said there's definitely something wrong and needs a full diagnostic test done. This would cost $$$. So, they had me bring it back to Carmax, since it's still within their 90 day warranty. The service guys so far, are ok. But this location as a whole... NO GOOD! read more

Since purchasing our 2015 Buick Encore in AUG 2022 with 60,194 miles and purchasing MaxCare we have spent over $5,000 in repairs on 3 separate issues. 1 issue (at 77,860 miles) was DENIED by MaxCare (CNA) as the blame for the issue was put on us and they refused to take responsibility. This cost $4,589.12 out of our pocket and we were without a car from MAY '24 to AUG '24. Issue 2 was in NOV '24 (@ 82,246 miles) for $795.37 was covered by MaxCare with cost us the $250 deductible. Issue 3 was in JNE '24 (@ 86,132 miles) estimated at 1,875.37 for 2 separate repairs. Purge valve ($242.27) we paid out of pocket as it was less than our deductible. The 2nd repair is for Exhust System (1,633.10) which we denied to be repaired by CarMax as I am NOT giving CarMax any more of my money. I am having our local mechanic do the necessary repairs. In summary: We paid (car loan) $25,496 initial price We have paid (repairs) $6,716.49 Driven 25,236 miles over 2.6 years We will NEVER use nor recommend CarMax to anyone. We have lost faith in you as a company and in the quality of American Cars. read more

After some research we decided to sell our car rather than trade it in. There was just over a $4,000 difference. Be sure to make an appointment because this place was very busy early on a Saturday morning. We were immediately greeted upon entry and directed to the appropriate area. We only had to wait while they test drove the car and completed paper work. Took about an hour from start to check in hand ~ well worth that $4,000. No pressure, no haggling. Everyone was very friendly and constantly checking to make sure we were being helped. Showroom is clean and airy. If selling or buying used ~ give them an opportunity. read more

Yep an m car shifts hard into gear when you are driving it recklessly, using paddle shifters which I don't even use. And then getting back with my car with hot brakes and telling me my cars worth 11000.00 . Hope you had fun driving my car like an a hole. Don't bother with these morons at Carmax. Buying or Selling.... CarMax isn't just for buying vehicles it's also great for selling them. The first thing I can tell you is that they really are different from other dealerships in that you aren't dealing with the car salesman/person. At regular dealerships the walk right up to you and follow you around asking you 100 questions. Not at CarMax. You could walk on the lot and look at every car and then when you decide what you're interested in you talk to a sales person for the test drive. Additionally, you can find the car you want on their website and schedule an appointment to view just the cars you want. CarMax is also known for giving the best price to buy your car, even if you don't buy one from them. That's exactly what I did. I got several offers from other dealerships and felt they were all too low. That's because the other dealerships have to pay salesperson commissions and a whole bunch of other fees. Cannot recommend this carmax enough!!!!!!! My favorite part about carmax is how relaxed everything is. Walked into carmax asked the front desk person to look at cars in the lot. The man at the desk said go right ahead. Went to the lot and got to look around bother free. Most of the cars are unlocked which allows you to see the vehicle, sit in it and check it out before test driving. Checked out a few vehicles left and came back the next weekend. Upon coming back I then decided I wanted to test drive the car I really wanted. Went back to the man at the desk he said 10 minute wait for a test drive and that we can look in the lot well we wait. 10 minutes later - showed proof of drivers license and insurance and got to test drive the vehicle for 20 minutes with no one in the car but me. Upon returning I decided I wanted the vehicle. They priced out my trade in - took 25 minutes. Then went through the whole process which took about 2 hours total. All signing was electronic and the salesman did a great job reviewing over everything with me. Can't beat that carmax warranty either. 10/10 recommend if you have anxiety about dealerships and costly repairs. AMAZING EXPERIENCE !! Update - ended up returning the car after issues arose. First, in the end I got my car and it's fine. However, I ordered a car from out of state that had to be delivered to the Bolingbrook, IL store. I was told multiple times that I'd have to wait a while for the car to arrive and then to pass Carmax's 170 point inspection. After about 2 weeks I got the call to come pick up the car. I completed the express pre-check out with the friendly customer service person on the phone and made an appointment for several days out. Finally the big day arrived and I was excited to plunk down a big chunk of change and get my nice new (used) car. After waiting about 20 minutes past my appointment I was finally approached and told that the car wasn't ready after all, that there was a defect that needed to be fixed and it would take another week or two. Obviously, though they didn't admit it, they hadn't bothered to actually check my car out and do the "170 point inspection" when they said they would, but didn't bother until after I was already on the way to my appointment to make my purchase. But in the meantime I was instructed to complete my purchase paperwork, including handing over my money. Then Carmax gave me a loaner vehicle and sent me away without my car, and without my money. It's nice I had a car to drive (I had no car to trade in), but it wasn't what I paid for. Finally a week and half later they fixed the problem (defective horn!) and told me to come pick it up. After going through all that I finally got my new car.... the same way I would have picked up any old car from the repair shop. "Oh, yeah, I think that's yours over there", is what they told me, and that was only after I asked, "OK, so where is my car?" No apology. Nothing. When I finally got to meet my car it was like meeting a new gallon of milk, no fun at all. My take away is that Carmax didn't give a hoot about me as a customer. i went to CarMax, about a month ago, the sales person would not go out of the lot with me and it was difficult to get him to answer my questions. He just kept saying he was a top salesperson and has been there several years. He was suppose to follow up with me. It's been a month now. I just tried calling the store to speak with a manager and I have been on hold for 30 minutes. Don't they have anyone to answer the phones. I bought and sold cars from this location and had great service but that was over 20 years ago. I guess they don't want my business. Some top talent, , just brags about themselves and don't offer to help. No sincerity at all. I just came across his card and thought they might like feedback. 31 minutes hold now. I am now thinking, I am glad I did not buy a car that day, since there does not seem to be customer service, like they used to have. What a rip-off! The price range for my vehicle suggested through multiple sources was $11,800 to 14,800. Online CarMax offered $8,400. I thought after they saw my vehicle and it's excellent condition they'd consider a higher offer. Instead they claimed a ridiculous hail damage assertion and lowered the offer to $7,400. Needless to say I took a pass. What a waste of time! I immediately went home, put my vehicle up for sale on one of the available websites, had an offer in 4 hours, and consummated a sale in 4 days. This I did in a hurry for a $3,400 higher price. I don't mind a company making a profit, however, trying to rip me off and make a windfall is unprofessional and unethical. You could train a squirrel to type in year, make, model, mileage and poor, good, excellent condition and have the computer spit out a value. I went to a west coast CarMax for help. They said "oh well, you are out of luck. You purchased the car 4 years ago." I called CarMax in Naperville and spoke with Kyle. He called the location on the west coast and got them to cut me the correct key. This was an unusual circumstance, but they accommodated me. I highly recommend this CarMax location. So, the time has come. My dude and I needed a minivan. This isn't something we took lightly. We tried to make it work with a 5 passenger car. It just wasn't working anymore. Sadness. Instead of living in denial, we took the bull by it's horns and went straight to the internet. I was looking at the Carmax website and saw that this particular location had three of the four makes of minivan we were interested in. So, we headed on in. We were met at the door by Al, a very friendly guy who was more than happy to show us the minivans we were interested in. He was very patient while we played with third row seats, automatic door openers and questioned the durability and practicality of the covers, even though it was 20 degrees outside. After some test drives and messing about with features, we decided to go with a Volkswagen Routan. I thought that the paperwork and getting out the door with the car would take hours and was nervous our babysitter (my brother) would be annoyed. Wrong. Once we decided on a car, I think the whole process to check out took a little over an hour. Amazing. The last time we bought a car, we were there for hours upon hours. Yeah, if we had sold our old car privately we would have gotten more money. Duh. But I would have had to deal with the calls and the emails and the showings. And what they offered us for the trade in was really reasonable. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another car from here. I think I'm done with conventional dealerships after this experience. I agreed to service, was offered water or coffee when I arrived in waiting, again when repairs started. The repair was completed in a timely manner, Mr. V. I did a lot of research on Carmax on my own after they were highly recommended by a friend. Carmax is the most straightforward approach to car buying. I found myself waiting for that moment of, "ah, but here's the catch..." but it never happened. I do recommend making an appointment if you're visiting on a Saturday, especially if it's nice outside. We had to wait about 20 minutes before meeting with an associate, but we were free to wander on the lot and check out the cars. The sales staff at this location were very laid back and personable. Nathan helped us out during the test drive and answered all of our questions. I had a specific vehicle on hold at another store, and he provided thorough information about transfers and inquired with the business office on our behalf when I asked about any complications purchasing a vehicle in Indiana but living in Illinois. The only reason I didn't purchase a vehicle at this location is because the one I very specifically wanted was in Merrillville. Transfers within 250 are free, which is awesome, but I didn't want to wait (it can take a few days). I was really pleased that an identical vehicle was available (different color and higher mileage) for us to test drive before heading to Indiana. My only minor complaint about this Carmax is the service center. What's great is that when you purchase a vehicle, regardless of which location, you can bring it in within 30 days if anything is wrong. They'll fix it. Free. My oil change light kept coming on, so I scheduled an appointment. I did this so I could drop it off on a Monday morning, go to work, and get the vehicle after work. When I asked if I'd be given a courtesy vehicle, I was told "I don't know, it depends how long the car will take, we might need to order parts." Okay well how am I supposed to get to work? I was also leery of how long they'd need to keep my car. Luckily, I found some information in my owner's manual about resetting the light, so I'm going to try that before taking my car in. read more

Be careful!!! Naperville IL, not sure why Review says CA When I sold my Toyota to CarMax at that time, we decided to wait on buying another car. I was given my plates and they gave me a fair amount for the car. A couple months later it was time to get me a car. Found one, decent price, and I liked it. Well, when it came time to transfer my plates there was two problems. 1. Some how within the CarMax system my plates had the NEW owner of the Toyotas name on them! I have no idea how but the problem was fixed. 2. They transferred my plates when LEGALLY they should not have. The car we bought was under my boyfriend and moms name so the plates that had only been in my name only should not have been transferred. I now have to pay 126$ to get new plates after spending $25 at Carmax for the plates to be transferred. I feel like Carmax knew that and if they did not know then they need to do some updated training on this step. I should have just done the plates with the DMV the first time around. Other then that everything else was fine. Our sales guy was pretty nice but you could tell they clearly make commission. He pulled the same crap as every other place by trying to sell us on a car WAY over the price range we gave him. We also had to hunt through cars that had already been sold or on reserve for somebody else. We had to scan the code on the window sticker. I wish they would have taken the cars not available off the lot or had something on the window saying its not available because the first 5 cars we liked all had not been available. That was very annoying and was time consuming. The Dealership itself was pretty clean and seemed somewhat organized. The second time we "checked in" the guy was pretty rude but once I said for the 3rd time we had spoken to our sales guy and he knew we had been coming he finally stopped saying they are " to busy to help us". The bathrooms are past the employees break room and the employees had been having lovely conversations that I wish my 7 year old didn't hear. Lots of swearing and not work appropriate conversations (hook-ups, who they would sleep with, and just things you should save for a night out not work). At least close that door knowing customers have to walk past to use the restroom. Last thing. When financing if Carmax financing approves you, the other options become unavailable. You don't even get to see the offers. I think the guy said there was 3 other loan companies but if CarMax approves it you automatically lose the other 3 options. I brought in at car which is in near perfect condition and they offered me 1/3 of what two other dealers have offered the same day. Also said trunklid, rear fender and door of car have been repainted, which is untrue. Rather than argue, I laughed at their offer, thanked them for their time, and left. What a joke. If you're not interested say so, but that offer was just an effin insult. I'll never be back after that offer...and I sold a car to Carmax in Clearwater years ago for a reasonable price. Took a friend of mine to this location in order to get her a new(er) vehicle. I'd gone online, set an appointment and reserved a vehicle, as well as asked to have another one transferred from another local store. There were two that interested her and we wanted to compare. When we got there, the appointment was showing on their screen. We had set it up early in the day, in order to avoid the rush. Regardless, we waited upwards of 15 minutes before someone was able to help us. Once a sales agent was located, I identified myself and explained what we were here to do. During the next 30 minutes, we were bounced between three separate sales agents, the vehicle I'd reserved (and set an appointment to see) was buried on the lot (instead of being pulled around and ready for us to look at), and the other car I'd asked to have transferred never made it. Disappointed, we walked the lot in the rain to get to the first vehicle. Our sales agent had to get keys to three other vehicles and move them before we could test drive the vehicle we'd reserved and set an appointment for. To paraphrase from Seinfeld, "What's the point of making a reservation?" In the end, my friend bought the car we looked at initially. However, the whole endeavor should have gone much more smoothly, given the effort I'd put in on the front end to line everything up prior to arrival. read more
