This is my experience. I filled out the online 'pre-approval' form, and was contacted by Josh. He asked all the right questions, and I didn't have any answers. He directed me to the CarMax app, where I spent the next two days finding the right vehicle for my wife. Josh shot me a text message, and answered every question I had to my complete satisfaction. Fast forward two days. I found a real nice compact SUV, a 2016 Chevy Trax with 14k miles on it. Practically new, everything in perfect working order. We go for the test drive, I'm sold before we leave the parking lot, it's a perfect fit for the family. We get back. I decided to look at a few more vehicles that I had seen on the app. I looked at about a dozen vehicles that day, but the first had captured my attention. The salesman, a young man by name of Erick Tinajero, took me inside and began the process. The was ZERO pressure. ZERO 'salesman' tactics. Since CarMax posts the price for all to see, there was no 'I gotta talk to the manager' scenarios that are all too common in car dealerships. Everything was done up front by computer. Got the approval in less than ten minutes, forked over my down payment of $2k (they NEVER even hinted or suggested to put down more), signed a ton of papers, and was driving my new car in less than an hour. I had put a car on hold to check it out about 6 days before the date to go see it through the website on their "Free Hold" tab. No obligation - No deposit required - No pressure they say. Still seeing that there was no changes to the reservation, we booked a Airbnb the day before the trip because we were traveling a long ways to come see the car and the drive back would be harsh. Again, got the confirmation online that the car was on hold for us to check out, but no calls from the sales rep or anything. Day before we go, I call to CHANGE the appointment time to be earlier during that day appointment. Low and behold, the vehicle had sold DAYS before. So, I guess the moral of the story is, don't trust Carmax to follow up with potential customers ESPECIALLY if they had made an appointment to see a car which was confirmed. Don't count on them to call you to let you know the car is sold and don't count on them to care about your time and money spent to possibly buy a car even though you had made an appointment the right way. Why even put the car on hold to begin with? So they can sucker you in to see a car that isn't even there. And let me guess, I should have been the one calling everyday to make sure the car wasn't sold like a crazy person right? Now I'm out $$$ for an Airbnb I won't even be using. This review has been updated. I contacted the National office and talked to Blake about the trouble I had. He had the general manager, Mary call be and assign me another sales person. They could not find the same vehicle in my price range. I found the same vehicle, slightly newer, but with more miles on it in Sacramento. $2600 difference. Since they had made the initial mistake of selling the car out from under me and me having to call them several times to find out where my car was I told my new sales person that I would pay $1300 more than the one that I was supposed to get, and they could eat the other half and I would be happy with that. This was Saturday, and I told my new sales person (Max) to text me with an answer. It is now Tuesday and I had to text him. He told me the sales team had told him they could not do that. You would think he might think of texting me back like he had promised to. So I am really done with Car Max. Below is the original review. I was looking for a Ford C Max Engergi. I checked the inventory at Car Max Santa Rosa, CA. They had one, but when I tried to set up an appt. it had sold. I then found one at the Car Max in San Jose, CA. I put in the request to have it transferred to Santa Rosa and was put in touch with Ruben who was to be my salesman. I was told it would take a week or so to get to Santa Rosa. Time passed and I texted Ruben. He said the eta was Saturday 7/24/2021. So I waited until Tuesday 7/27/2021 can called since I had not been notified that it had arrived. Now in the meantime I set up an appt. with the Ford dealer for a diagnostic check, arranged financing with a credit union (with a hard pull of my credit rating), transferred money from savings to my checking for the down payment and arranged my insurance coverage for the vehicle. On my call on Tuesday, I was informed (in a call that took close to a half hour) that the car had been sold! I was asked if I wanted another salesperson and said yes. However the sales woman I was transferred to spoke so fast with a heavy accent (no I am not a Trumper I am just giving you the facts) that I could only understand every third word. I texted my sales man Ruben and informed him of the situation and received no reply. I called Car Max headquarters and the person I talked to was very apologetic and said he would try to figure out what happened. He asked if the number I was calling on was a good number to contact me (it was). As I was asking questions, we got disconnected. I have a land line so it had to be a problem on his side. NO CALL BACK. We bought a Nissan Leaf from Car Max 3 years ago. It was the most pleasant experience we had every had at a dealer. Something has changed and changed for the worse. I purchased a vehicle with their extended warranty and when the vehicle needed repair they didn't help in any way. The vehicle was sold to me with a "product improvement" that wasn't performed prior to being sold. It caused the complete engine to break down and needed to be replaced. My vehicle stayed in the shop for four months while Carmax looked into seeing what they could do and their conclusion was that they weren't going to be able to help. I ended paying over 10K out of pocket to get it fixed. Would not be purchasing another car from CarMax and don't recommend their services. read more

BEWARE! I paid to have a car shipped from Santa Rosa to Los Angeles. I had email confirmation as well as another email saying the car was prepared to ship. I also was pre-approved and did all the financials with CarMax financial Dept. I would have just bought the car instead of having transferred but the CarMax employee said why not just have it transferred so you can look at it first since it's offered. Cut to the following day when I get an email with a refund for the transfer fee. No explanation. Just a refund. My heart sank. This car was a gift for our daughter. After many phone calls with a road to no where I figured out they just sold the car to someone else. Customer service was nothing but nice with a whole bunch of lip service. "Oh, I understand. That is awful... I have never seen this before..." bla bla bla. In the end their only solution to rectify this was to offer waived shipping. It was $199. In the scheme of the big picture this does nothing. Or if shipping from further they would waive a portion. The problem was there were no comparable cars. Not even close. They did not offer any sort of discount off any other cars. This is a major corporation that makes tons of $. It was their mistake and they did nothing to resolve it. I have never experienced anything like this. It actually made me sad to think this is a direction humanity was headed. I hope not. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR $. When I bought my Prius three years ago from Carmax I was very pleased with the buying experience and I am still very pleased with the car. I have recommended them to other people so when my partner had to get a new car, it was the first place we went. She had driven a friend's car and liked it a lot and they had one on the lot for $12,000. I thought it was a little pricey since it was a 2007 but it only had around 30,000 miles on it. When we got home, we started looking on other sites and we did not find a single one that expensive! Instead the prices topped out at $8000! And they all had under 100000. When she called back she had a hard time getting the sales agent. Finally she went in to talk to him and he said they would not lower the price so she walked out. Their inventory was very large, and the cars that I fell in love with were low milage, I mean some were under 24K and their prices were jaw-dropping! Our Carmax associate, Herson, was AMAZING. I explained to him how badly I was scorned from our previous car buying and car leasing experiences and he was so detailed with how everything worked, was patient with me and all my questions and best of all - HE WAS NOT PUSHY! We test drove a few cars, I asked a bunch of questions and he was just happy to hang out with me. We sold them our For Explorer with high mileage and we got a really good amount for it that we were able to apply to the car of my dreams. I didn't know it until I test drove it. I had no intentions of leaving with a car and BOOM. Love at first turn. Buying my new car was SUCH an easy process. It took a while, but that is pretty standard for car buying. Since I have had my new ride, 2 weeks now, I keep finding new features that it has and I kid you not - had I bought this brand new from the dealer I would have been in the upwards of 50K for the vehicle. Had it not been for his patience I probably would've left without buying anything. He made sure that I was happy with my choice and even waited for my wife to come and test drive. He was exceptionally knowledgeable about the car too. The service was very personal and professional. For brief time there you could call me one of Carmax's biggest fans. This review is regarding my second transaction with them over a series of months. I drive for Lyft and a few dozen of my customers have asked me how my experience was. Up until now I was happy to report to them that it was superb. The sales representative was awesome and the whole transaction went as easily as it could! All I can say is that my praise has done a 180. And I feel bad for those people I recommended go to Carmax. My opinion changed drastically about a week ago when I took the vehicle into a local mechanic to have the oil changed for the first time, having put about 5k miles on it since purchase. It was one of those drive-in oil change spots, so I was still in the vehicle when the hood was popped for the first time since purchase. Seconds later, the first words out of this mechanic's mouth were, "Hey! Uh, did you know your oil cap is missing?" I was shocked, and quickly exited my vehicle to have a look and document the problem for the obvious legal reasons. The attached photos are what saw, my engine covered in oil and absolutely no oil cap where there should always be one. Fortunately this mechanic at this 3rd party shop is the supervisor and gave me his contact information in case I ever need him to testify. We're talking potential for thousands of dollars of damages to an engine that only had about 14,000 miles on it at purchase. It wasn't cheap. Meanwhile, I was sent into a panic. This car is my business vehicle and I depend on it to live. Additionally I PURCHASED it to be used for a long time. Disposable income is not something I'm drowning in, so the potential financial repercussions of Carmax's mistake are not something I'm able to incur. It would put me out of work if this engine fails prematurely. Immediately after my visit to the oil stop, I drove to Carmax Santa Rosa to address the issue with management. The response was lackluster from the Sales Manager. It was nice of them to offer to power wash my engine and check it for damage. But at this point I'm struck by two factors. This is now coming out of my extremely valuable time which I am not being compensated for in any way, and I'm not sure I trust them anymore to disclose the issues that may not become apparent to me for 10s of thousands of miles from now. I mean, if their mechanic forgot the oil cap, what else did they miss? Replacing the oil cap should be the easiest and most obvious thing to do after completing an oil change, really revealing the incompetence of this particular mechanic. It was unclear how detailed their inspection would be, it would seem to me the engine needs to be disassembled entirely and checked for premature wear. I'm doubting they'll be that thorough or fair based on my experience thus-far. I am in the process of corresponding with the bank who provided me a loan for about 25% of the value of the vehicle so that we can pursue compensation together as this affects them as much as it does me. Last year I bought and sold six cars mostly from private sellers, and had never having an issue this severe. I will update this review as time goes on to reflect anything Carmax does with regards to this particular issue. It is my hope they are honest and fair, providing myself and the bank with the compensation we deserve for their mistake. Even if there turns out to be no engine damage, I've still spent hours on this issue where I could have been working I won't get back that time or lost income. They have a huge nationwide selection that I was able to search on the Internet to find the best truck for the best price that I was looking for. Any trucks like it were either more money or not as nice of a truck. I live in California and I shipped a 2016 Toyota tundra platinum 2WD from Tennessee for $799 and I was not disappointed. The same truck would've cost me $3000 to $8000 more at a local dealer. And it's nearly impossible to find a truck like this from an independent owner because it's so new and such low miles. We got to the Santa Rosa store at 5:30pm and Henry greeted us warmly, walked us through the process, was extremely detailed with covid-19 protocols (disinfecting everything multiple times, sitting 6' apart behind plexiglass, mask on at all times), and most of all nice. I bought a car at the Santa Rosa location, and after a few days decided it did not have everything we needed/wanted, and we were able to find a car that matched our needs at the Carmax in Pleasanton. After calling to make sure it would be ok to return the first car to Pleasanton, and being assured it was fine, we went in and made the exchange. This was on 7/18. They assured me that the Santa Rosa location would cancel the original purchase and send a check to my credit union to pay off the original financing that had been set up, so in the meantime, I set up new financing for the new car. Well, Santa Rosa somehow neglected to send a check to my credit union, and here I am, after two weeks of calling every other day, and STILL no check has been sent/received. Each time I call, I get a different person, who goes through and 'researches' even after I say I need to talk to a manager, and then they come back from their research and tell me the manager is not available but they will have them call me back with information. I have a payment coming due on a car I don't even own anymore, and still no final word from Carmax Santa Rosa. The latest is the manager will call me tomorrow (Saturday), and I'm betting there will still be no resolution, because she won't be able to reach the headquarters office on a weekend. This experience is worse than sitting in a regular dealership for 6 hours to buy a new car. If it wasn't for the fact I really like the car I purchased at the Pleasanton location, I would return this one too, and be completely done with Carmax. read more

This is a complaint about the appraisal process. Pretty much everyone knows that used car prices are very high at this time with the shortage of chips. I have been "following the value" of my 2020 X5 for 6 months. Kelly Blue Book had its value at $59k in July of '21, and since then, increased to 61k. My pristine (less than 12,000 mile) car was input into their system the morning I drove it in for in house appraisal. That morning , in the Car Max website it indicated I should/could/would get an offer of 59k, if the car was in excellent condition. It also indicated it was an "estimate"....well, just like any other "sleazy dealer", I received an in writing estimate of 56k. When my "rep" handed me the offer, he said, "so, what do you think?" Well, why wasn't it close to the online estimate? He told me there was nothing wrong with the car, but, you know, blah blah blah "market fluctuations....blah blah" If Car Max doesn't want to piss off their customers, then, if, and I don't believe for a minute "market fluckyou customers", then how bout updating your online estimations, so people like myself don't get to take pleasure in writing authentic negative reviews. I drove 30 miles to BMW dealer and received an offer for what the car was actually worth. It's been said CarMax is a good place to sell your car. If you want to "dump it", then, yes. read more

Ok so car shopping is stressful yet exciting all at the same time, here we go with this review. My first initial gut feeling said I wouldn't or shouldn't car shop here, however they offer so many what seems to be perks... well i decided to take a stroll and see what they had. First trip there you cant even go look with out checking in and having someone escort you. I felt a lot of pressure and i left right away. I found a car I liked online and requested a transfer it took 3-7 days i was told.(from A LOCATION 4 hours away) ok well day 8 it arrived i eagerly went to look at it, of course i loved it but it was trashed and dirty. Lipgloss water and candy under the seats when it states it was a fleet car. Not washed not detailed, i was like ok i rushed it, let them clean it. Multiple calls and texts to come to do the papers, when i said my husband had to see it first. Oh they cleaned it up a bit but when my husband went to look at it, he noticed several scratches and dents in paint, NO HAGGLE They wanted 40,000+ for a used car that the paint job was ruined by scratches and dents ? Are you kidding me ? They want top dollar with no haggle for cars that are not standard. Do yourself a favor and research like we did before getting into a car they easily can lie about or get over on you! My son chose Carmax to purchase his first car. We looked and he found one , he spoke to the sales rep prior to seeing the car to make sure that he was all set up for my son's visit. I went with him to look at the car, we were there for a couple of hours or so. He test drove it and inspected it himself, it worked good at the time. He purchased the car, my son and I were excited with his decision. We thought wow this is great , what a pleasant buying experience. Well, that did not last long. My son left the dealership and drove home and around the neighborhood . 2 hours later, I see him on our driveway and the car is not moving and making a loud noise with a smell of oil being burned. The car broke down within 2 hours of purchasing it! We immediately called our salesperson, explained the situation, his first words were, "I'm off from work now, but I will call service to take care of it". That's it, we waited for 30 min no call, I had to call the manager On premise that day, I explained the situation and he had no idea what was going on. Finally, we get someone to help us and they said there will be a tow truck to pick up the car and bring it back to Carmax so sit tight. In the meantime, I was texting with the salesperson , I called but he didn't pick up. He told me that it sounds like my son broke the car driving home, because it was a manual transmission, that young boys get excited and ride the clutch. Omg, how ridiculous is that! My son who just purchased his first vehicle is going to break his car within hours.. I can't believe he wrote that I have his text! I was appalled, this is not customer service. Then I spoke with the other manager, I was very upset, he rudely said to me to "calm down" and that my son is his own man and he should of known what he got himself into. I cannot believe he was talking to me this way. The salesman and the manager were so rude to us knowing what we have been through. I was devasted, we were exhausted from arguing with these people. Finally, my son resolved the issue , he was given a rental till they figured out what was wrong with the car. It happens to be that the transmission blew. I just couldn't believe what was going on. Meanwhile my son was being blamed for the cause.. I spoke to an Attorney and he advised me that I had a definite case, it was up to my son and I to pursue. Carmax offered up their 7 day return policy, we took it and my son exchanged it for another vehicle, different from the other, and also more costs. These Managers and Sales team really need more education about CUSTOMER SERVICE, we go there to purchase a car , and not to be treated with disrespect! They would not give us a refund for the broken car so we were forced to get another one with them. Never again, at least not with the Carmax in Santa Rosa CA will we buy a car from them. What a great experience! I got two of my cars appraised with very little hassle. It took about 30 minutes but I just walked around the lot to pass the time. It was great to see all of the different cars without being hounded by sales people. If you don't know about Carmax...they don't follow you around like a hawk so you can have a hassle/haggle free experience and look at cars at your own pace. That is all great but what made is excellent was Kaitlyn. She was so professional, kind, genuine and educated me on everything Carmax! She truly made the experience go from good to great. Carmax better hang on to her because I would offer her a job in a heartbeat. I came back 3 days later to sell my car and Cory (not the manager lol) helped us. He was efficent, funny and helpful. We sold our car (that has 10 months left on our lease) in 30 minutes or less. All around excellent experience and I can give all the credit to the people! There are pros and cons to shopping at CarMax. Pros: 1.The process was very easy, and I never felt pressured to buy anything. 2. I liked that I could scroll through inventory at home and place a hold on a car for several days to allow me to come in on a day off to check it out. 3. The car I eventually bought was impeccably detailed. Even the engine was obviously cleaned. 4. They have a wide variety of cars, and while it took some time to find the one I wanted, their inventory is constantly moving, so there's always lots of options. 5. I never had to wait to be assisted. When I placed a hold on the car and set up an appointment to test drive, the associate was front and center to greet me when I walked in and had the car pulled up and ready. I never had to look around for help. 6. No trip to the DMV after. CarMax handles all the registration. Cons: 1. No haggling. I paid quite a bit more than I was hoping for, and really struggled that the car I liked (but was 7 years old) couldn't be lowered in price. 2. The trade-in offered for my car was laughable. We eventually sold this car for $1,700 more. I could've taken it to a junkyard for more than what was offered. 3. When handing over the check to pay, the sales associate had to have us pull up our bank accounts on our phones so that he could see that we had the funds available. First of all, I very much don't like that some random sales associate now knows how much is in my account, and I feel like that can't really be legal, but second of all, that is extremely insulting. 4. Not even two weeks after purchasing the car, the "maintenance required" light came on. Quite annoying, given that it should've just had all of its maintenance before being handed over. Overall, I am happy with my purchase and my experience, even though I felt some of their practices were off-putting. read more

Back in December of 2019 I bought a 2019 Nissan Sentra s. Not owning it a year I already traded it in and when I bought the paperwork saying that I traded it in at another dealership they where extremely rude. Note that I was at my local Nissan dealership almost their every week July-August having it worked on because of a clicking sound and i had to have the WHOLE front end replaced. I WILL NEVER COME BACK they are nice to you when you buy a car through then but the minute you trade it in at another dealership the are so rude. This is an unusual review that comments on response. I had a problem with a purchased used 2017 Jaguar F Type within 36 hours of purchase. The transmission/smog warning light came on. Loved the car but dismayed that I already had to bring it in for service. It is how the service department and in particular customer service reps Amy and Allen handled the situation. They were cordial but most importantly sympathetic to the circumstances. They asked me how could they help me to make situation better. Although I purchased the extended CarMax warranty but it was still under company warranty. It posed a huge inconvenience for me to get it down to the Marin dealership an hour away. Amy helped to facilitate its transfer for which I am grateful. The results of evaluation and repair are pending. Yet the attitude and customer service from Amy and Allen at the CarMax service department deserves a five star rating. Thank you. read more

A BIG thank you to everyone at CarMax for making my entire experience so wonderful ! I made an appointment to sell my old car and perhaps look for a newer used car on the lot. Joseph helped me with the entire process from beginning to end. I not only sold my old car for a fair price, but I also found and drove home with my new/used car off the lot! I'm thrilled! So quick and easy. I want to thank Joseph for be big so kind, patient and really funny too! He kept me laughing the entire time.
