Carmen's was a delight! We were craving Mexican food and this was Bomb. They were so friendly and welcoming! The restaurant is so charming and casual. The prices are fair, big potions. The food quality is excellent ! I am so excited to have found this little gem by my house! Thank you for a wonderful early dinner!

We walked in and the AC was pumping on a 100° day after food at Desert Falls. The cart guy recommended the place. We trust locals, being from temecula and visiting. Place looks very clean and kept. Workers had chips on the table before our butts hit the seat. I ordered a stuffed shrimp Bellpeppers thing that you put mayonnaise on, soy sauce, and lemon. Wow! Tastes explodes on every bite. Very unique to this spot. Try one, or ten.... They're technically called Chiles Gueritos !! So good! Worth coming just for this!

Caldo de res one of the cleanest recovery caldo you can ask for. Packed with meat and veggies. Lengua was tender and not gamey. That pepper with shrimp appetizer is unique and delicious. Friendly staff. Glad to find authentic mexican flavors out here!

What a fabulous place. I came in for lunch pick up on Saturday at about 2. I asked if it could order carnitas on top of my tostada instead of chicken or beef, and can I have the beans on the side. . A nice young lady came over and said we can do anything you want! That's a five star experience in my book and I will be a loyal customer forever. Everything was outstanding. They also gave me lots of salsas . Guacamole, and sour cream on the side. Also chips too. The total was only $31 for enough food for two days . That's the way to, run a business in my opinion.

Service was slow and they weren't even that packed, queso fundido chorizo was real watery, my chilaquiles chips tasted stale and were hard to eat. Definitely not coming back.

Why can't you be consistent? The first time at Carmen's was wonderful! Everything we ate was fantastic. The problem is: we went back. My husband ordered chile colorado again. The first time was great, but second time, the meat was tough and gristly, tasted old and like a poor quality cut. I ordered the carne asada with shrimp. The four shrimp were... really shrimpy. Honestly the smallest shrimp I've ever been served. The carne asada had a very good sauce but my meat was also very gristly and tasted like a really inferior cut. Service was slow, even with the place less than 1/2 full. I think one of the worst traits is inconsistency. Carmen's went from fab to drab. Don't go there. The owners either changed their meat suppliers or cut down on their budget. I'm almost surprised we didn't get sick.

We went to this place 3 times on our one week vacation. The shrimp peppers are amazing - you must get them. Service is exceptional with all the servers waiting on you. Nice touch of giving samples of their soup. Can't wait to go back. read more

I was going to this place in the afternoon for lunch a couple times a month. I believe the owner was behind the bar. good food good service okay drinks but nice atmosphere and not over priced. Went here for dinner the other night. I sat at the bar it took 15 minutes to even be acknowledged. Then went I order I told the server Im going to get a couple of drinks a place an order to go. She rings my margarita and food up at the same time. So im already aware my food is going to sit and wait and get cold since she can't take the thought process to think "maybe I should wait for her second drink to ring up the food" but whatever I usually doctor up food when I get home anyways. My first drink was horrible. It was all mix no tequila. And im sorry for a Mexican restaurant I expected a good margarita. Not the same americanized watered down lime lemon mix. Also asked for no salt which she could not comprehend. I did order another drink against my own beter judgement and the 2nd drink was worse!! I had to order a side of tequila to even make it a proper drink. Which they use false bottom shot glasses so the shot is not a full ounce... its barley even half an ounce! I down my drink ask serval times for a check and leave a dollar tip. By the time I got home my head hurt so bad I could barely eat my food. When I did try to eat it smelled disgusting and tasted worse. I rarely go out for dinner and just wanted a simple margarita and taco date by myself. It was a waste of 50 dollars and as an ex restaurant owner in this economy you should be happy anyone is coming to your establishment.Save your money. Make the tacos and margs yourself read more

I don't often write reviews but I feel compelled to write this one. I have frequented El Mexicali II for several years and have always enjoyed my experience. However, I live in La Quinta and it's a bit of a trek to get there so I decided to give Carmen's a try. What a pleasant surprise! The wait staff is courteous and very efficient. The food was outstanding. Does not quite have the ambiance of El Mexicali II, but I can live with that. I highly recommend if you are looking for some authentic Mexican food. read more

The service, food, and drinks were exceptional. I got a Chili Verde Burrito made wet with green sauce on top. Their green sauce is the best I've ever had! My wife got the grilled shrimp tacos. She loved them. The waiter was very friendly and told us the history of the family that owns the Mexicali Cafes in Indio and now Carmen's. We also got a Paloma and Cadillac Margarita. Both were huge and well made. We will definitely go back, this is our new go to Mexan spot! read more

The food is so good there! Don't let the location fool you. The service is fast and friendly. I either go to sit inside and eat or order to go and each time I haven't had any issues. Driving towards home to Sun City at 3:00 we decided to stop by Carmen's as we had heard that they had good margaritas. Well, lo and behold, it was happy hour and margaritas were $8.00! We decided to have nachos, also the special flautas and well, another item, taquitos. The four of us were soooo pleased with the margaritas, the nachos - two orders, one with carne asada and one with chicken, flautas, chicken and beef, rice and beans, taquitos as well. The food was excellent as was the service. Even the chips and salsa were perfect. A true neighborhood treasure. We can't wait to go back. Carmen's will be on our regular rotation and our new favorite for Mexican. Special shout out to Eddie who served and interacted with us (took our pic - grandkids visiting). read more

We were traveling through Palm Desert for one night and were so fortunate to stop at Carmen's for dinner. It was outstanding in every way. We started with the Mexicali's margaritas, the best margaritas we've had in ages. They make them with real triple sec and lime, not the sugary syrup used in most margaritas. We were glad we just had the regular size, which was plenty big! We shared the Combinacion de Mariscos, which was a selection of seafood items, and definitely large enough for two people. The shrimp-stuffed peppers may be my new favorite food. The ceviche was beautifully fresh, and the fried fish was tasty and not greasy at all. We finished with the fried ice cream, which made my husband ecstatic. It was a massive ball of ice cream in a cinnamon sugar tortilla shell. He asked to substitute honey instead of chocolate, which they did. I would have been happy having just the shell, which was delicious and very crispy. The service was wonderful, and everyone was friendly and welcoming. We will absolutely come here on our next visit to Palm Desert, and we may eat here every night that we're in town. read more

First time we went today and it was really good :) Very sweet & welcoming staff!!! I had their two shredded beef taco plate with beans and rice. The rice was outstanding!!! You can tell it's homemade and made with love. Next time we go back, we're gonna try the fajitas... That's one of my favorite dishes and I'm hoping it's going to be as good. Authentic Mexican flavors and homestyle cooking, using recipes passed down from our matriarch, Carmen Murguia, who opened our first family restaurant in the Coachella Valley back in 1981. Established in 2023.

A Legacy of 50 Years and 4 Generations in the Coachella Valley of Grandma's Homestyle Mexican Cooking & Great Service! In 1981, our mother and family started “El Mexicali Cafe” on Indio Blvd. in Indio, CA. Since then, our homestyle Mexican cuisine and outstanding service have delighted all of our guests. A few years later, in 2006, our success and loyal customers inspired us to open a second restaurant, “El Mexicali Cafe 2” on Monroe St. in Indio. Today, after 50 years and four generations, we are happy to carry on our mother’s heritage by using her “family recipes” - which are well-known among locals and visitors as some of the greatest Mexican food in the Coachella Valley - at our newest location: Carmen's in Palm Desert, CA.

The food quality was excellent, and the service truly stood out. A special shout-out to our usual waiter, Joseph, for his attentive and friendly service--he always makes us feel well taken care of.
