Terrible Service Overshadowed an Otherwise Okay Meal The food itself was okay. Nothing amazing, but decent enough. That said, no food is good enough to make up for the service we received. Our server didn't check on us once after dropping off our food. No drink refills, no "how is everything?" - nothing. We sat at our table for 90 minutes without a single follow-up. She actively avoided our table, taking the long way around the dining room just to not make eye contact. It was incredibly obvious and incredibly rude. With 3 people & 2 dishes to split weren't able to finish either. I wouldn't go here with a small group at all. I would honestly recommend no less than 4 people if you plan to finish the food and not waste a lot of leftovers (saw A LOT of waste). Came to NY for a trip and the first place my friend drove me to was Carmine's. It is located in Times Square right in the heart of the hustle and bustle. When we arrived there was a man out front saying reservation only but my friend knew they also did walk ups at the bar so we asked if that was open and he said yes. I haven't eaten at Carmine's inside the restaurant in the Times Square location for a while now since it's always so packed and it's tourist central, though my recent takeout experience with them was great. I got the linguine with shrimp, roasted garlic in a white wine sauce. Good pasta, well cooked shrimp (maybe a tad over), and fragrant roasted garlic. The portions are ginormous as their reputation underscores this, each single pasta dish can feed 4ish people. On separate occasions when I've gone with a group of people it's always best to under order and be pleasantly surprised at the amount of leftovers. The food is tasty and as other reviews have mentioned, you could find more elevated dishes at other Italian restaurants, but for a hearty, abundant family-style meal it's hard to beat Carmine's. Interestingly enough for Carmine's and Virgil's you're able to place orders together now since they'd both under the Alicart restaurant group (which also includes The Mermaid Inn and Artie's Delicatessen). Arrived at the restaurant at our scheduled reservation time and we were told that we could be seated once our entire party arrived. The vibe of the restaurant appears to be rather dated. Our waiter did a phenomenal job of upselling beverages, appetizers, and entrees, although it was odd that the waiter claimed that they could only take our order all at once. Started off with the appetizers including the hot and cold anti-pasti plates, mushrooms, and fried calamari. The fried calamari was lightly fried although the portions were gigantic, maybe suitable for 10? The other anti-pasti plates were decent, although the focus appeared to be on quantity vs quality. At the Murder Mystery Dinner we had Cesear Salad and bread then the main course were Shrimp Scampi, Vodka Noddless and Chicken Parmasean and for dessert we had Terminasu and canolli. Went tonight with my husband for our 17th anniversary and what a great experience. For a Tuesday night, it was packed! Did start off a little iffy when one of the host was rude when we asked where the restroom was. Yet after that small hiccup everything was amazing. First time going to Carmine's so we weren't too sure of the portion sizes. But our server Micah was super nice and helpful. We ended up just getting an appetizer which was more than enough...and boy, was it delicious! Strawberry lemonade had actual strawberries which is a plus since you know most other places serve it with the syrup and not "real" strawberry. My friends and I managed to get a reservation here for lunch on a busy weekend and it was most of our first time coming to this famous restaurant and the five of us *very* comfortably shared 3 plates, family style. We ended up getting the caesar salad, a gluten-free pasta with calamari, and a chicken dish. Everything tasted so fresh and flavorful - I honestly couldn't decide which one was my favorite! The portion sizes are truly gigantic - the salads look like literal mountains. As someone with a gluten allergy, I was deeply appreciative with how extensive of a gluten-free menu they provided and my friends were also impressed by the texture of the gluten-free pasta. As a quick tip, let your server know beforehand if your table has a preference for having all of the food served at the same time or for the food to come out one by one. They weren't able to offer gluten-free bread service but all of my friends really enjoyed the variety of breads that were provided! Our server was truly so attentive and welcoming and she even caught a bit of our conversation while we were talking about one of our friends at the table celebrating his birthday, so a bunch of servers came out later to surprise him with a small ice cream sundae with whipped cream. The sauce burst with flavor from the vodka/tomato/cream base. The veggies tasted fresh l, not like that canned goods you feel you are eating at other places. And the Italian sausage was to die for... which is expected in NYC! Here's the thing, one portion is good enough for 4-6 people. When they say family style, I think they are referring to a. Traditional Italian family of 2 parents and 8 kids hahaha. I got a to go box and I barely made a dent. The Malbec Alamos I chose for the dish was excellent. A visit to New York City is not complete without dining at Carmine's on 44th Street just off Broadway. It was the perfect venue for dinner after a 3pm Matinee at Lion King which is right next door. A perfect combo of play and dinner and Carmine's is only 100 steps from the theatre exit (left as you leave the theatre). One very important note...make a reservation well in advance. Mine was a Sunday night at 6:30 but getting one for a Friday or Saturday are a reasonable dining hour means booking well ahead. I was able to get the Sunday reservation about 6 days in advance. Carmine's is very well organized in handling the crowds. You are screened outside first and asked if you have a reservation. If you do, you enter and will be greeted by an attendant with an iPad or at the reception desk. They check you in and then you wait alongside the Bar/Take Out area. We were 1/2 hour early and got seated exactly at our reservation time. We were first taken upstairs and presented a 2-Top table next to the bar. Upstairs is nice but I did not care for this table location for a couple of reasons. 1. It was an aisle table so lots of traffic from the bar, and 2. I could feel the AC blowing over the top of my head and back of neck. It's still winter and my bald head is very sensitive to cold air and did not want to wear a hat so asked to be seated downstairs which has a much higher ceiling. No problem and we were re-seated in 5 minutes to a much more comfortable table and location. If you haven't yet dined at Carmine's be prepared. The portions are family style and meant to be shared by the entire table. That is part of the dining experience so take advantage of it and know that you will be taking home a large bag of Carmine leftovers. My cousin informed the waiter she has onion and garlic allergies. Our waitress, Taylor, was most helpful and accomodating. She not only brought us the special menu, she went back to the kitchen to specifically find out if the Stuffed Pepper or Stuffed Artichoke had either garlic or onion. Good thing we did because they both either had garlic or were exposed to garlic so that answered our question. We ordered: Caesar Salad, Penne with Olive Oil and Chicken Parmigiana. I ordered a Woodford Old Fashioned which was perfect. The salad came out first which we shared, Anchovies on the side. We ate less than half of the plate before our main course arrived. A waiter took the salad, boxed it up and brought it back in a bag along side the table. Taylor checked in on us constantly and was most friendly and helpful as were all of the staff we met that night. The food was prepared Carmine style, the Penne was cooked just right and was served with a light oil mixed in but not too much where the oil pooled on the serving platter, it was just right. The Chicken Parm was served with 2 large cutlets of chicken and too much for the 2 of us (actually it was only me) so the leftover Chicken and Pasta were boxed up, along with the bread, and taken home for a couple of more meals. Great spot for 2 or 10. Make it a destination when you visit or just for fun. Yes, there are many Italian restaurants in NYC, many fine ones, but the Carmine experience is one you will never forget.
