La Perla is everything you want in an authentic taco joint. The best tacos I've ever had in the county at nearly half the price of some of the boujier establishments. Their carnitas just melt in your mouth, the beef shank soup is exactly what you want for comfort food, and they have a fabulous variety of sauces to choose from. This gem took me home to Houston, Texas. The food coming out of this kitchen is the best fresh Mexican food I have had in Colorado. I had the sumptuous chili rellenos with the deeply flavored rice and beans. The owner helpful and he was the nicest man. My husband had the lime spiked pork corn tacos. The pork was cut into lean strips that had been marinated in pineapple and onion. They were juicy morsels. The grocery store has all the equipment you will need to make your own Mexican cuisine and the ingredients. There were large bins of every dried chili known in Mexican food, as well as a large selection of spices and herbs. I Love this place and very happy to have found it for my future trips to Steamboat Springs from COS. read more

This place had been recommended to me for years before I finally made it in to check it out. I was planning a baby shower and baby mama wanted a street taco spread. A few of us went ahead of time to try various menu items and everything was delicious! We ended up ordering their barbacoa (The carnitas, shredded beef and el pastor we're phenomenal as well but I decided to make a chicken and a veg option myself) and an array of their sauces and salsas. They were so easy to order with and pick up was super smooth. This place has good reviews? What?! They treated me like a freak when they took my order. They were super nervous and wouldn't look me in the eye. My burrito completely fell apart the second I picked it up (see picture). My fiance went back to get another burrito for me, and he watched the woman prepare it. Someone else told her that she rolled it the wrong way, and she was all "So? Give it to him anyway." I ended up having to eat the new burrito with a fork and knife in the car because it -- you guessed it -- fell apart again. The beans were awful. They tasted like canned refried beans. No frills but great food. I ordered the carne asada tacos which came with 4 tacos (on 8 corn tortillas). They were served with nothing but the meat and tortillas. However they have a salsa bar with cilantro, lime, and various relishes and garnishes. The tacos were very good and infinitely better than any of the other Hispanic food I've had in Summit County. Finally some heat! The other reviews are correct in that this isn't the cleanest or most sterile restaurant. What do you expect though! It's a taco stand inside a market/butcher shop! read more

I went for lunch this week, and they had a special enchilada w/rice and beans plate thing on the menu board. So sure, I'll try that. So I start ordering and we had some communication issues but we got through it. I took the enchilada plate and loaded up from the salsa bar and headed back to work. Wow, the orange salsa is really spicy! I love the whole jalapeno and pickled onion as well as the other salsas on the salsa bar. I was surprised that there were three enchiladas, smothered red (your choice red or green as well as chicken or beef) and the shredded beef inside was super good. I think it ended up just under $20 without drinks and after tips, but boy it really filled me up and tasty. FYI, parking is difficult there even in summer. Maybe park over by the lumber/hardware and take a small walk. read more

We have a Mexican grocery store near our home in metro Detroit that has a restaurant as part of it that we love. So when I saw this on Yelp I was determined to visit. My brother and I stopped in tonight from Keystone and were not disappointed. I like "local" and "off the beaten path", this was both. Dave and I were the only skiers among a crowd of locals. But the staff made us welcome and explained several unfamiliar menu items. I got chicken enchiladas, which were awesome... though next time I will get the milder red sauce. If I you're not familiar with authentic Mexican, be sure to ask about the heat factor. Homemade guacamole was a great side, as was a selection from the salsa bar. Know that you are in the dining section of a grocery store, as other reviews have noted, that's a plus. You can explore while your meal is being prepared. Enjoy! read more

MEXICANS EAT HERE. That says it all. My wife is from southern Mexico and we both enjoy all types of food that can differ widely from every state in the country. It has been impossible to find food like this anywhere else in Colorado. Step through the door and you could easily be in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Take a moment to browse the aisles. I found fresh flour tortillas from the state of Sonora. The exact same ones that my sister in law has been sending us for 20 years. Order two tacos al pastor, one carne asada and beans burrito, and sit down to enjoy the Mariachi music. I found chicharron, salsas, and like most restaurants and stores in Mexico, you can even buy a mop or a cowboy hat. After a meal at Carniceria La Perla, wander next door to Murdochs Ranch Supply. This is another type of strike that is quickly disappearing. read more

Nice local authentic Mexican counter-serve place inside a market. I stopped in during a business trip for takeout. I decided this was my opportunity to finally try birria, so I can't really judge it on its merits, but it sure tasted good to me. The takeout birria came in a quart-size soup container with about 5 corn tortillas, so definitely ask for extra. If you're looking for a fancy chain Mexican restaurant with food served from mass assembly, this is not the place. This is a Mexican grocery store with a seating area. The service isn't great, and the menu is a bit confusing. The items on the big board menu are in Spanish with English translations, but they aren't formatted that way... But if you plan to buy other non restaurant items here like chicharones and pinatas, this is the place. We had to insist on chips, which came free. The salsas were lovely and tasted fresh at 5pm. There were half liters of Mexican Coke, which was awesome. We ordered tacos, which were good - but the burritos were massive and envy inducing. A restaurant inside a Mexican grocery / butchery, that's promising enough. When I realized that I was not only the solo gringo, but also the only non construction worker sitting down to eat, I knew I could expect real Mexican. Tacos are excellent (Carne asada, lengua, tripas), so is quesadilla. Pupusas of several varieties were on the non-regular handwritten menu, I had to give it a try and was really glad I did.
