The BBQ was not to my liking, it was full of waste chucks of fat etc. the chicken was good and the wife said the greens were excellent.

Horrible. Greens were bitter and like they sat for 34 hours into mush. Everything is pre frozen. My dad got a balled up piece of hard plastic with his okra. Manager said it was from the plastic bag the okra was in touching the fryer oil... horrible. read more

Went here for my birthday- here's what happened. It was early in dinner service, around 5ish. I was craving Eastern Carolina bbq. I ordered the chopped plate and two sides. Pork came out COLD! Sides were canned veggies. Blech! Disappointment city. I will say that our waiter was very kind and the hush puppies were tasty. Not what I had hoped for. A second trip here after enough time had passed to let me forget about my last mediocre meal here. Not impressed this time. Barbecue was dry. Lima beans clearly from a can - salty and almost complete mush. Chicken was okay - nothing notable. Went to dine yesterday thinking Monday shouldn't be busy and I was correct BUT for as slow as it was the food wasn't anything spectacular (had heard about it during the NHL All Star games as a place Canes players like to go for good old BBQ). Reading the menu and seeing that the owner had learned his craft from the folks at Parkers in Wilson gave us high hopes. Ended up being all for nothing. Here is a run down of what we had: Chicken: One piece was hot but the rest were cold or cool. Ok, flavor. BBQ Pork: Ok flavor but tasted really, really greasy. Brunswick Stew: OK but could have been hotter (temp). Cole Slaw: unnatural green color and just didn't taste good. Potato Salad: ok but tasted like the Food Lion brand and not what you should find in a restaurant like this. Fried Okra: ok but again was a store freezer section brand and nothing special or nothing you couldn't do at home. By profession, I'm a Human Resources (HR) professional, but at heart, I'm a foodie. Luckily, my job involves a lot of travel so I'm able to sample great food across the country. I make it a priority to find local restaurants in every city I visit and sample the specialty of that city or state. So of course when I travel to North Carolina, I look for barbecue restaurants. In April 2016, I traveled to Raleigh for business and found Carolina Barbecue. Advertised as a restaurant specializing in eastern NC style barbecue, with food made from scratch and a staff that gets to know its customers, it sounded like my kind of place! I decided to visit on a Saturday afternoon and I'm glad I did. Upon my arrival, I was greeted with a smile and taken to my booth. My server came to my table promptly, introduced herself with a smile, and took my drink order. Her name was Astrid, which I remember because the name is Scandinavian like my mother's family. When she arrived back with my drink, she asked if I had any questions about the menu (I guess I looked like a tourist). I explained that I was traveling for business and asked for suggestions. She told me that the restaurant was known for its barbecue and fried chicken. As is my habit, I asked what her favorite dish was. She told me the barbecue chicken and suggested I try the combo dinner of barbecue and barbecue chicken to get the best of both worlds. I took her suggestion and added collards and potato salad as sides. During the course of our conversation, I asked about the Brunswick stew but didn't order it. While waiting for my meal, the server brought me a sample of the Brunswick stew, in case I wanted to order it "on my next visit". I found the gesture to be thoughtful not to mention a great way to encourage a return visit! When the food arrived, it was delicious. The barbecue was fresh and moist with just the right amount of vinegar and heat that makes eastern NC style barbecue distinctive. The barbecue chicken was fall off the bone tender and I could drink the barbecue sauce by itself! The collards were well-seasoned and the potato salad was great too. The portions were very generous. The server was attentive and I enjoyed my dining experience. I looked forward to returning to Raleigh so that I could visit the restaurant again! What a difference a year makes. I traveled to Raleigh again earlier this summer and went to Carolina Barbecue again. I was greeted when I entered the restaurant but noticed several unwiped tables as I was taken to my booth. When my server arrived, there was no smile and I don't remember her giving me her name. (I later found out it was Lexi). There was no small talk while she took my order. She was perfunctory, at best, and definitely not friendly. After delivering my meal, she didn't check on me to see if I needed anything. However, I did observe her on her cell phone. I guess her phone was more important that providing good service. What happened next let me know that this behavior wasn't an isolated incident. While I was at the restaurant, a gentleman asked to speak to Lexi's manager. When the manager arrived, he proceeded to tell her about his previous visit when Lexi was his server. Evidently, she disappeared and he was unable to locate her during his meal. Understandably, he was not pleased. The manager apologized and the gentlemen left. Shortly after, as I walked to the restroom, I heard the manager telling the server about the gentleman's complaint. Their conversation ended with the server saying something to the effect of "not needing his effing dollar anyway", at which point she and her manager laughed. No admonishment from the manager. No coaching to remind the server of the importance of good customer service. The manager's response was laughter. Neither of them seemed to be aware or care that a customer may have overheard their exchange. It doesn't take an HR professional to know that the staff's behavior is a reflection of management. If management finds poor customer service funny, then the service will not improve. In fact, it will probably get worse. Needless to say, I don't plan on going back to Carolina Barbecue on my next trip to Raleigh. If I get an overwhelming urge for barbecue I can't resist during my next visit to Raleigh, I may give the drive-thru a try. I'm sure I can serve myself much better than the service I received in the dining room. read more

This use to be a good place for BBQ, but not anymore. We always get the family style all you can eat, but it seems to take so long to get refills. The BBQ comes out in a small bowl and only 3/4 full to start. It's not even enough to start for 2 people. The chicken usually has good flavor but lately it's just cold and greasy. The wait staff is hit or miss. My last visit was a nice young man who had no clue! ... I'm just not impressed with the food or service anymore. read more

Had lunch at Carolina BBQ with several retirees and enjoyed it. The staff seated us in a large area reserved for meetings so that we could talk freely and enjoy our lunch. Yolonda was our server and very efficient. Some got pork chopped, some on sandwiches, others got chicken. I settled on the fried chicken gizzards with collards and brunswick stew. The tea is a little sweet for me so I get it 50/50 and man it's good. read more

We heard that the beef ribs were good, so gave it a try. Arrived at 5:00 pm and noticed few cars, should have turned around then. Saw they charge $13 for ribs, but we still wanted to try them. When I got my plate I got 3 ribs, mostly fat and they were Nasty. The sauce was too sweet. I had fried okra and sweet potato fries, those were ok. My husband didn't like them as well. First time going after driving by a million times. It was always packed so we knew we had to try it. It was great. Really good pulled pork, fried chicken, and sides. It's just great southern food. The skin on the chicken is some of the best Ive ever tasted. All the veggies/sides we got were great to. There are different sides based on the day of the week. Really quick service as well. Great homestyle BBQ at good prices. My usual go-to meal is the humble BBQ sandwich but their fried chicken is also delicious, crispy and juicy. They sell their own hot sauce, a vinegary sauce with plenty of red peppers that goes well with the BBQ and cabbage. They have different specials for each day of the week. I usually go on Sundays for the chicken pastry (chicken n' dumplings) with yams and green beans, some solid comfort food. Cant give 0 stars but needs it I had the bbq pork chops take out today tastes like boiled pork with something resembling watery bbq sauce running all over the veggies.They wrap the whole plate in foil so it doesn't leak out. This place is an excellent value ... large portions of decent food at a low price. I had the BBQ plate. My only complaint is that only chopped BBQ is offered (I prefer pulled pork). My wife had the BBQ chicken, which was decent, but swimming in a thin sauce. Speaking of sauce, your choices at the table are limited two (plus hot sauce) - one designated as being for chicken, the other generic. The chopped pork had no smoke flavor, but the generic sauce took it up notch. My wife (a true southerner) would not eat the collards that she ordered because they had sugar (not uncommon, but she doesn't like her collards that way, so if you have her taste in collards, pass them up). read more
