The only reason I'm giving this place one star is because the waitress was really nice and helpful. I had the combination plate. Pork barbecue and fried chicken and my sides were potato salad and fried okra. The pork was so unbelievably tasteless and dry. The chicken and the okra was room temperature and tasted rubbery and like it was sitting under a heat lamp for two days. The potato salad tasted like they bought it from the grocery store. Nothing had any taste to it. We will defiantly not be returning. read more

This place is amazing!! Real southern comfort food and the best sweet tea in the area! My wife and I were pleased. We ordered the barbecue dinner with sides of Brunswick stew, both were delicious. It also came with coleslaw which was great and spot on. We also got the hush puppies that were good but some pieces were burnt. And lastly we ordered banana pudding for dessert which was amazing! I always visit this place every Friday. But today is my last Friday ever coming to this location. Anthony was very rude, I just asked him to make sure my food is hot. I just don't like soggy fried chicken, that's my preference. He threw the pin down hard as he walked away. Then when my order came I asked him for 10 Hot sauce packets, he gave me 5. I asked for 5 more and he thre the hot sauce in my bag. He shouldn't be a manager with his nasty attitude. I been coming here since high school and my parents think the world of David. You get what you pay for at this establishment, enough said? You can go in and eat, go through drive thru, or walk in rear and pick up food in person. The pricing can be a little heavy when getting all the fixins for the family. Their banana puddin' is great, really wish they would practice safe storage (they store it at room temperature). Their cabbage is very good, the hush puppies are as expected (good), the chicken is pretty good, the bbq is really good, the fried okra is great. We tried Carolina Barbecue after reading all the great reviews it had. And after eating there (well, almost eating there), I've got to say, I'm not sure what everyone finds so fabulous about it. My experience was so bad that I couldn't even eat one bite. The problem started when we entered the restaurant. There was an overwhelming mildew smell....much like a wet basement. And the ambience is a bit dated and dark, so you really feel like you're in someone's smelly basement. Even though the smell was bad we decided to give the place the benefit of the doubt because, well, how can so many reviewers be wrong? Ugh...once the meal arrived I really wished I had trusted my first instinct to bolt. I had ordered the pulled pork bbq plate. It arrived with a large helping of crinkle cut fries (which tasted, and looked, exactly like Ore-Ida Fries), some hushpuppies (which were outstanding!), corn sticks (which didn't really taste like anything to me but everyone else in the restaurant seemed to be enjoying), and cole slaw (if you can call it that). The cole slaw was a light green color, and looked like it was cabbage and mayo that had been processed in a blender. No other ingredients whatsoever. If I hadn't known that it was cole slaw I wouldn't even have been able to recognize it. It had no flavor to it whatsoever and I actually wonder if it was just scooped out of a plastic jar, rather than being homemade. Now on to the pork. The pulled pork was grey and had dark bits in it. It wasn't juicy (like the delicious pulled pork that's served at The Pit), and I actually suspect that it's not made fresh on site. I couldn't even get one bite down. So all in all, my experience wasn't pleasant. Maybe I was there on an off day? But whatever the case might be, I certainly don't think I could stomach going back there again. The barbecue was very good and the only thing that keeps this place a 2 star not a 1 star. Bitter and mushy Lima beans, ok boiled potatoes, good fries, stale cornbread, slaw loaded with pickles, oyster sandwich was made with small heavily battered greasy oysters, left untouched. Even the kids tenders were junky processed kind. If others liked the fried chicken then we must have served leftovers from a previous meal period because it was greasy on the outside and dry on the inside. Tea was smokey and terribly sweet. I cut it with my wife's water to drink it. So aside from the very good pulled pork, everything else was sub par, especially for Eastern NC. Clean restroom is a good sign. read more

It's BBQ. We stopped here looking for BBQ and that;s what we got. It took a while to find the place since Google Maps said it was a few miles east towards I40 but it sure wasn't. It was quite a ways down 70. The sweet tea was really good and slushy too, I like the ice they serve it with. I had the pork BBQ dinner with 2 sides and some corn sticks. We ended up here last night after trying a couple other places and finding them closed. We were pleasantly surprised and thought the extra drive to Garner was worth it. We ordered the family style dinner, which included all-you-can eat BBQ, fried chicken, hush puppies, coleslaw, and two sides for about $8.00 a person. Even though it was at the very end of the night and they were getting ready to close, the food was fresh and hot and the portions were large. Traditional southern meal thats good, but I've had better.. I have been eating here since I first moved to Garner in 2003. I've tried almost everything on the menu, some items only once. My go to items are brunswick stew and chicken slick (when they have it). The Bbq is ok but having eaten bbq in 7 different states so I pass on the bbq. The only time I ordered collard they were sweet. Like someone poured cups of sugar in the pot. I prefer savory, not sweet collards so I pass on them too. Other items to mention are the mac and cheese, its greesey but worth a splurge once in a while. My husband loves the fried livers, I secretly do also. I normally get take-out and the separate entrance is nice. The one time I went to the drive thru, I ended up having to go inside after waiting several minutes for no one to take my order. The sit down service is good but I have only been when its Slow. Its not a chain restaurant which is always good. Its a decent meal but nothing special to write home about. read more

Anytime we are in the Carolinas we are in for some BBQ. Anywhere we travel if they have BBQ we give it a shot. We went with high expectations, but were very disappointed. The service was wonderful, efficient and friendly. We have no complaints with the service. As for the other reviewers comments on the state of the building, it is a BBQ place, so it was everything we would have expected. Its not a 5 star fancy restaurant, it's a perfect BBQ location. We ordered BBQ (chopped pork), fried chicken, pork ribs and various sides. The fried chicken was excellent, well done and had a good flavor. The BBQ however was dry and flavorless. It took some serious amount of the pepper/vinegar sauce to improve it. We were pretty shocked that they were serving this BBQ. The ribs were the special but they were anything but. They were not only dry and overcooked but we would use the word petrified to describe them. They were bathed in a sauce, which was good but the sauce could not restore any moisture to these ribs. The end of the ribs with what should have been a big chunk of delicious moist meat was hard as rock and not edible. As for the sides, the Brunswick stew was ok, but was lacking any really spice or range of flavors. The cornbread sticks faced the same fate as the ribs, they were very dry and hard. The hushpuppies however were very moist and had a great flavor, some of the best we have had in a BBQ place. Maybe we had dinner on a bad night, or something was going on in the kitchen. At some point we will probably give them another shot, as one dinner should not reflect on a restaurant. We are hoping our next experience will be better. read more

We ordered the family style meal for 35+ and it was disgusting. The chicken tasted like it had been fried in old oil. The grease from it felt sticky on your fingers. The barbecue was tasteless, and their "famous" hot sauce did not improve the flavor or the spice. The cornbread was cold and greasy; it left a bad taste in my mouth. The boiled potatoes were complete mush. The only saving graces were the green beans and the coleslaw; but honestly, how can you screw up green beans. They were hot and had a good seasoning. The coleslaw had just the right amount of tang. Our servers were also sub par; you had to almost beg to get a fill up on the drink pitchers. The building itself is rundown and the floors were sticky. Was here two weeks ago. They serve a family style buffet.The lemonade is always great. The fried chicken is tasty when it is hot. The slaw is really good on a regular too. The collards they chop up very thin and its almost mushy. Not the best way to fix collards when they are a staple in the south. The seafood is okay too, the fish you'd probably want fried a little hard. The cornsticks arent my cup of tea either but the hushpuppies are hot and sweet!
