We got 3 take-out seafood combination platters tonight. The flounder had no meat on it - it was just skin. They forgot to give us the extra pint of coleslaw we ordered, plus the pint of peach cobbler we ordered; so we had to turn around and go back. When we got home, there were no hush puppies included with our platters. We spent $67 for a truly miserable meal. Over six years ago, we stopped eating at Carolina BBQ because of the terrible take-out service and management's continual apathy. We learned tonight that the service has only gotten worse and now their food is bad, too (flounder). I wish I had kept that promise to myself to never go back to Carolina BBQ. Picked up whole fried chickens, potato salad, hush puppies and collards from the drive up window. It was hot and fresh. Drive thru was easy. Everything was very good except collards just ok. Good flavor but a bit mushy for us. We were bringing this over to a relatives house for lunch and liked it so much we drove through again on the way home to bring more back for dinner. Who is not a fan of BBQ? Ok, perhaps vegetarians​. Well, this is BBQ heaven for the local clientele. This was my first visit in person however for take-out​. I tried to order the rib plate, but it wasn't​ available​ on Thursdays. (the guy that took my order didn't appear to be having a friendly day because he snapped at me by saying "that's not on Thursdays!). So I asked, "what do you suggest?" only to be met with a scornful, "there is the menu board." Oh well, everyone doesn't​ have perfect days. Okay, I ordered the BBQ plate with yams and collard greens in addition to a chicken pastry plate with fried okra and collard greens. The food is delivered quickly, in a large sealed thick white paper sack. The random wafts of BBQ with hushpuppy scent were intoxicating and made me wish that Carolina BBQ sold car air fresheners. I could hardly contain myself eating the BBQ when I reached home. It was delicious. The delectable yams were as close to a dessert than anything I experienced. The collard greens were (almost) like grandmas with just the right seasoning. The hush puppies had a subtle hint of onion flavor and melted in my mouth like cotton candy. Everything was under twenty dollars which I found to be a bargain. Plenty of parking but spaces can sometimes be limited in the afternoon. Be mindful of the entry because if you miss it,​ you must loop around highway 70 again. read more

Every time I get a to-go plate from the drive thru the order is wrong. Then I call and I'm on hold waiting forever to speak to the kitchen manager. Not to mention that the kitchen manager never came to the phone. Paying $20+ dollars for wrong plates is ridiculous. I as for dark meat chicken, it's a plate full of white meat. I ask for potato salad, i got sweet potato fries. I ask for collards, I got cabbage. Never going there again, sticking to Smithfield chicken and BBQ! read more

All these one star reviews are hilarious. What's more hilarious is that this is the same place that has catered for events I've attended and everyone raved about it. No doubt the look of the establishment is shabby, but the food is not. I've been going to Carolina Barbecue for years and it is my favorite Barbecue joint in the Triangle area. The first time I brought my parents here, they could not stop talking about how great the fried chicken was- and that is saying a lot considering how picky my parents are. I hosted my college graduation dinner here many moons ago, because they have a large room that is perfect for large groups and a "family style" dinner. This means, you pay 1 price for all you can eat chicken, barbecue, slaw, cornsticks/hushpuppies and 2 sides of your choice. What a deal! Also, the service always comes w/ a side of southern charm. My daughter and I visited Carolina Barbecue to eat inside on Mother's Day. Now I have been before for drive-thru service for collards and peach cobbler. I must go ahead and admit that I have a crushed ice fetish and also order large cups of ice to eat. Upon entering, we were greeted by Anna, a wonderful waitress you took good care of us overall. Now to the food. We decided that since we were in the mood for seafood, that we would try the family style option which is right around $15 per person. This includes pork barbecue, cornsticks and hushpuppies, coleslaw and two sides shared between those at the table. You are then allowed a choice of 3 seafood sides ranging from oysters, shrimp, flounder, trout and possibly another option. On top of that, you can order from a choice of fried chicken, baked chicken, and barbecue chicken. The baked and barbecued chicken comes in leg quarters or breast and wing. Collards-good Coleslaw-too sweet and too green for my liking Cornsticks-flavorless Hushpuppies-delicious Oysters-good Flounder-good Barbecue (pork and chicken)- true eastern Carolina pork barbecue but no smoke Since this is all you can eat, we ordered a second round of oysters and flounder. The second batch came greasy with the breading falling off. There is a lot of food offered but the quality is just okay. The service makes up for everything else. I do think I will stick to the cobbler, collards, and ice through the drive thru. read more

Decor: Barbecue has been served at this location for a very long time and it looks it inside and out. For me that is what I expect from a barbeque joint. Ferns and brass have no place in a Southern barbecue restaurant. I love seeing the cement floor. Food: They have good barbecue and sides. My favorite are the corn sticks. What I like best is the family style meal. For a little extra it includes fried seafood, shimp, flounder, oysters. Service: In all the times I have gone I have never had bad services. The wait staff is conssistently freindly and attentive. Price: The family style meal is a pretty good value. I would actually give them 0 stars I went there on Sunday afternoon with my husband and ordered 2 dinners with iced teas as I was drinking my tea I noticed a black object in my tea it was a DEAD FLY. Shocked and upset I told our waitress and he acted as if it was nothing and said he would bring the general manager which was a young Caucasian female who acted unconcerned and unapologetic. First visit here. Used the drive-thru so feedback on the interior will not be present here. I can say that I have tried many of the southern places in the area. I can also say that this was by far my favorite place. The few staff members that I interacted with were very friendly - as expected here in South. I had the hamburger steak with yams and sweet potato fries. Everything was excellent. Definitely get the gravy on the steak it is superior. These were the best sweet potato fries ever - most places overcook them and they get hard - these were nice and soft yet crispy. Hushpuppies were on par and amazing. Portions were generous even for my spouse and he has a big appetite. Its was a great experience exactly what I wanted in down home country food. Sure wish I found this place sooner. read more

I am not a big barbecue person, however at the suggestions of several of my employes here in the RDU area i gave this place a try for lunch on St. Patrick's Day... I must say the best asset of this restaurant was the staff. Upon entering i was quickly greeted and ushered to a table in what was obviously a popular place among locals (full parking lot)... though busy, the efficiency of the staff helped keep a quick turn on open tables.. Once seated i was quickly greeted by the sever (Carlos)... this was the beginning of his very good and friendly service, especially for a place that looked a bit like an abandoned house. I ordered the barbecue, mashed potatoes (with gravy), buttered corn and cole slaw. All of which were very good in my opinion. Also part of the package were warm hushpuppies and corn-sticks. The food arrived super fast, again i consider a testament to the staff. The cole slaw, though green (but i don't think just for 03/17), tasted like my grandmothers and the barbecue tasted to me like the pork we eat on New Years Day back in Lancaster, PA... Yummy! The mashed potatoes were blended well, but still had that creamy homemade texture. The only disappointment was the buttered corn, it was well, bland... and I'm not sure there was any butter involved (probably better for me anyway). The hushpuppies were oblong, as opposed to the round shape i was familiar with, though the taste was comparable. The corn-sticks were about twice as long as the hushpuppies and tasted like a stick of cornbread with whole corn kernels mixed in. Now just in case you haven't noticed by now carolina bbq does bbq and soul food. the hush puppies here are legendary and so is the peach cobbler. i also love the beef ribs which is what i got tonight. It comes with two sides of your choosing. most of the time i get the mac-n - cheese and collard greens it never let's me down. in a nutshell carolina barbecue is a pretty good place to get your soul food fix. and i have been and will continue to get mine here. so if your on this side of town and have a itch that only a plate of bbq can scratch try Carolina barbecue ya just might like it. lol read more

I've had this place on my to do list for several years. They catered one of the business luncheons at my wife's old job several years ago and it was outstanding! I don't find myself in that part of Garner very often but that's about to change. I got the Friday special from the takeout side: beef ribs with Brunswick stew, Collard greens, slaw(or not), hush puppies, corn sticks, and a sweet tea. Let's start with the good...These ribs oh wow. I guess I was expecting the Fred Flintstone giant bone-in ribs but this cut was boneless and oh so melt in your mouth good. The stew was spot on and the greens (aside from being chopped) were tasty. Hush puppies also legit. Why does everyone chop their greens around here? In the not so tasty zone falls the corn sticks and the sweet tea. It may be just me not being raised in the Carolinas. Is a corn stick supposed to taste like something? I've never had one that did. Anyway the sweet tea was super sweet, normally don't mind this but it had a twang to it. It was 1130am so I'm hoping it was fresh brewed that day. It wasn't overbearing but it wasn't great. Lastly let's talk slaw. What I received was not what I consider slaw. This stuff was finely chopped cabbage with water added to it. There are so many ways to do a good slaw but I guess they focus on other things here. Just left there and the food on the bar was ice-cold, when management was notified about this they acted as if they were totally unconcerned. We asked when the bar would be reset and new food put out, we were told they had cut the bar on to give it a few minutes and the food would get hot. We then decided to get up and leave because eating the food could potentially make us sick so we went up to the register and were told we had to pay for the food because we had ate at least something so we paid and left however we do not want anyone else to eat here unknowingly and get sick today. The worst part was that the employees seemed unconcerned that this could harm a guest eating at this establishment and make them sick. The first thing the restaurant needs to address is the smell of the dinning area. The whole place smells like a men's urinal, but the men's urinal smells like the dining hall should...that really confused me. As for the food, I've tried both their eastern style pork barbecue and their barbecued chicken. The eastern style 'cue was a pretty good. The chicken was dry and too sweet. I love sweet barbecue, but this was too cloying for me. The dish came with hushpuppies and coleslaw. You were also given the option of two other sides. I had the cabbage and lima beans. The cabbage was okay; a little flavorless. The limas needed a lot more flavor and were too pasty, pale and looked like they came from a can. The hushpuppies were quite good, but the coleslaw was (like the chicken) way too sweet. Fix the dinning room smell, the sides, and barbecue chicken and the place will be a much bigger hit. read more

Felt like getting some good BBQ for my wife and I but ended up receiving this. By the time we got home and opened the bag this is what I opened, I called and spoke to an employee. Who then was told that if I could make it back in 7 mins before they close at 9pm I could get a refund, I explained I lived 15-20 mins away so she went and got the manager/owner of the establishment on the phone. When he got on the phone he immediately said that it was our fault and that he would never plate or bag anything like that and we were just trying to get a free meal. I didn't even want the fucking meal I wanted my money back the food looks fucking disgusting anyways. He then proceeds to tell me that he doesn't do refunds because he runs into this problem all the time... well if this is a reoccurring problem it's just a bunch of people wanting free food huh? Saturday night's special is "All You Can Eat BBQ Beef Ribs" with 2 vegetables and choice of hushpuppies, rolls, or cornsticks. I loaded up on a second serving of ribs. They were tender and very sweet. The lima beans were beige in color but not bitter. The potato salad was good but they've made much better in the past. The sweet tea was good. The service was friendly even though it was infrequent. This wasn't my best visit to Carolina Barbecue but it still wasn't bad. This place is one of my food "safeties" for when I want some low key, comfort food without straying far from home. read more

Visited this place based on the top ten BBQ joints in NC reviews, was not impressed. They were out of brisket, how can a BBQ joint be out of brisket??? The pulled pork was just ok, lacked smoke, the sauce was as expected, I make the same sauce in my kitchen, nothing stands out. Ribs were good, same as many other places, tony Roma is better. Please kick this up a notch, add some mustard and vinegar to the sauce, have brisket available everyday, maybe we will visit this place in the future. read more

BBQ could have been pretty good from a flavor standpoint but my serving was warm (at best) and the pulled strands of pork were like jerky...dry / hard like it had been reheated. The complimentary pork skins were nice. The corn sticks, hush puppies and fries were extremely greasy / disappointing. The sweet tea was great and the fried chicken was freshly cooked. Much as I want to love this place, I have to give it a mere three stars. If I was being strictly accurate, it probably only rates two stars (as in "I've seen better") but I can't be that cruel to an old-time barbeque joint like this. The frustrating thing about this place is that some of the "peripherals" are excellent. The Hush Puppies are my favorite in the Triangle, hands down. This is the only place I've found around here that makes them with chopped scallions (as opposed to the plain, bland cornmeal fritters that you get at most places). Their sauces are also excellent and distinctive, especially the vinegar-based hot sauce. But unfortunately, the main dishes just fall flat. The barbeque is nothing special. The fried flounder I had on my last visit was very thin and mushy, which made me wonder if it had been frozen. The collards were chopped very fine and were also mushy, like they came out of a can. Prices are good and service is fast and friendly, but unfortunately, they just don't deliver anything exceptional when it comes to the main event. I would want to eat here once a week if the barbeque were better, but as it is, I only wind up here once or twice a year. read more
