I have only given them 1 star because I cannot give a 1/2 star. My wife purchased cupcake for our niece's 4th birthday celebration (35); however, when we got to the party there were only 34 (COUNT THE NUMBER PROVIDED AND WHAT WHAT ORDERED). The cupcakes were tasteless, none of the kids would eat them (but I thought kids would eat anything?). My wife was ordering normal size cupcakes and she was given minis. Lastly, the cost per cupcake received was approximate $4.20 per mini cupcake and if I had just purchased 35 regular cupcakes in the display case it would have $2.50 per normal cupcake. #CostSavings Yes, we shouldn't have accepted the order when we picked them up, however, we were in a hurry, they were already paid for, and we at least thought the would taste good. #CardboardTastingCupcakes After the event, my wife called the shop to talk with the owner about her dissatisfaction and the own would not get on the phone. #BadBusinessPractice No, we were not looking for a refund and when speaking to the baker, my wife repeatedly had to reiterate "No I'm not looking for a refund." I was looking forward to leaving a good review to make up for the last bad one. That changed when I found out it was a $40 delivery fee for 2 cupcakes to Great Bridge. It was my pup's first birthday and we wanted to celebrate by getting him some pup cakes. I walked on inside where the doorbell went off to note someone had come inside. No one was there to say hello. I almost thought the place was closed for lunch or something. I figured I might as well look for those pup cakes and they were no where to be found. Finally, a woman came out since I guess she had just finished up an appointment with a client. She asked if anyone had helped me yet. I replied back saying no one had so far and told her what I was looking for. She showed me the cooler and the reason why I couldn't find any was because there was none on the shelf. The woman said she was sure there was some in the back and was off to find them. It took a while and they did suggest that I buy a cupcake while I waited. Another lady came out to say they found some that were frozen in the back and asked if I was in a big hurry. I wasn't so she said she could frost them for me. I ended up getting 2 packs of pup cakes since there's a sign saying a $5 minimum to use your card. Luckily, I can freeze the extra pup cakes for another special day. I understand that having someone at the front counter at all times isn't feasible, but when you have a system to inform you that someone comes in - someone should pay attention to make sure they can greet and help those customers coming inside. Maybe that front counter person could have made sure to keep those pup cakes in stock up front since it was clear they had extra in the back. Don't be nervous to visit this place yall, this is great for Chesapeake. I can tell from being in the store with other customers that people are turned off by texture. They see what appears to be a grainy texture of frosting and automatically think that they will receive a dry cupcake. Well listen to me when I say this...don't let the French star decorating tip (google it) fool you. These babies are moister than a baby wipe! Most cupcakeries in this area (including Carolina cupcakery) use a large round tip or star tip to frost their cupcakes which offers a smoother appearance of frosting... forever! So honestly you could be getting a 1-2 day old cupcake somewhere else that just happens to look fresh because of the tip used. Carolina stands by their freshness. All day old cupcakes are sold 1/2 off and are usually at the bottom of the display case. More often than not I will purchase said cupcake, because who doesn't like a good deal. But just know that when you are purchasing everything from the top shelves it is indeed fresh. So give them a chance, take a bite out off life and one of their cupcakes. You will not be disappointed and if you are just say something while you are there and I'm sure they will make it up to you. read more

I've dealt with this place twice now and both times, their customer service was seriously lacking. Their cupcakes are very good but the place needs some adjustment in their customer service. The first experience was for my kid's birthday. We ordered cupcakes in advance, paid in full, and even checked a couple days ahead of time to be sure we could pick them up. The day of the birthday party we went to pick them up and there were no cupcakes made and they acted like they knew nothing about it. They managed to pull off making 30 cupcakes and delivering them in two hours but the rush should have never happened. The second experience has been trying to order a cake and cupcakes. We haven't even been able to get someone to take the order because we are trying to order allergy free cupcakes. Apparently there is only one person who makes those and nobody else can even take the order. We've been told a couple times they'd call back but have received nothing yet. I'd give a a zero or one star rating, but their cupcakes earn them two because they are delicious. And, the benefit of being able to get allergy free cupcakes is very nice. IF there were other options in the area for those, I'd surely go somewhere else. Reading other reviews, I can see that customer service is not their strong point. If you just stop in to grab a cupcake, they may be just fine but if you have to count on them, you're in trouble. read more

I bought two cakes from the Chesapeake location and was very disappointed with the end product. I emailed their customer service to politely express my concerns, and the owner promised to "look into it," and "make it right." I haven't heard from them since, and even sent a follow-up email. The white cake was very dry, the decoration was sloppy, the Happy Birthday name tag was missing, the cakes were round instead of square (like I ordered) and there was a crack in the one cake. While the chocolate cake tasted good, the cakes were absolutely not worth the $140 I paid. While placing my order the clerk said, "you get what you pay for," and in this instance that is not the case. We ended up throwing out the white cake. Well this year Carolina Cupcakery catered again for the Homearama Charity Preview Party night, which was this evening. And this time, they got it right. Second best cupcakes in Hampton Roads. Top-notch customer service here! We ordered 25 cupcakes for our son's classroom for his birthday. Once we got home, we noticed that the individual containers used to store the cupcakes were too small and the frosting had mashed up against the top of the container and when removing the tops, part of the muffin came apart with the frosting. We emailed the store a 5:00p.m. and received an immediate response from the owner, offering to fix the problem first thing in the morning. I took the effected cupcakes to the store and they promptly re-frosted the cupcakes and placed then in appropriate containers. We were able to get them to the school in plenty of time for the party. We ordered our wedding cake from them. They were great through the planning process. However, they were extremely late with the cake. It was at-least an hour late and almost wasn't there for our reception. Also, it tasted old. The cake did not taste fresh at all and it was dry. It was not worth the $600 we paid for it AT ALL. We each had one bite (the bite we fed each other) and had no desire to eat any more. I understand things happen, people are late at times. However, they should have planned ahead for traffic--they are supposed to be professionals and should understand the importance of being punctual. Wowie, wow, wow, wow, this place was bad on so many levels. I'm a sucker for baked goods and cupcakes, so when my sister wanted to stop at the camera store, I saw this place and had to check it out. As we walked past the window to the front door, we noticed that there was no product in the cases inside the store. We thought maybe the store was closed, but it was open. We went in and noticed that they had cupcakes laid out in plastic storage containers... hmmm, odd... and other cupcakes were out in the open (not liking that either). Upon further inspection, the cakey part of the cupcake did not even rise above the paper wrapper (what?), and the frosting colors looked very artificial. There was very little product in this store that made me want to lay down good $$ or give up valuable calories. My sister left to do her shopping, and I was determined to find the good stuff (maybe the owner was holding out on us??) As I wandered around, I found a (covered) container of samples... so I grabbed one. That taste was all it took to turn me towards the door and I was outta there. However, their dryness was pretty noticeable and disappointing, but their lack of moisture was mostly concealed with their delicious icing, like SERIOUSLY tasty icings. I dropped in and picked up 5 cupcakes from the case for approximately $22 and was highly disappointed. These were obviously not baked fresh and should not be sold without advising buyers of the date they were baked. I bought 2 vanilla, 2 birthday cake and an almond to share with my family. The almond flavor was very artificial and the vanilla was barely present. But what was far worse was that they were all so crumbly and dry that we tossed them rather than eat them (even my kids with underdeveloped palates couldn't do it). The cupcakes were visually appealing but the taste left much to be desired. I usually read reviews before patronizing places I've not been, and did not in this case but I wish I had. Both mine and my dad's cupcakes were good--much better than a grocery store but not quite as good as most places that specialize in cupcakes/cakes. The frosting was very creamy, sweet & smooth but the cake itself was dry & crumbly. I got the free cake pop (chocolate chip cookie dough) with check in and it was okay. They had a decent selection of flavors but only a couple that really caught my eye today, since a few others which I would've preferred (and were listed in the case in front of empty spots) were out before 6pm. The woman helping us was clearly not very happy to be there. My dad always tries to cheer people up when he notices this so he was able to make her smile and strike up a conversation but before that we felt a little unwelcome. I absolutely LOVE these cupcakes! I have Celiac Disease and I love that my gluten free cupcakes I get from there are made in a separate facility so I can eat happily! I love the variety of flavors too (although the pomegranate kiss are my favorites and I order them every birthday). Three years ago they made a ombré cupcake display for my wedding and it was gorgeous! They also made the top tier GF for me! I would not recommend going to Carolina Cupcakery, it is cheaper to get a box mix and it tastes way better. We have tried these cupcakes a couple of times before but most recently we purchased 4 cupcakes from the new Waterside District in Norfolk for $18. We ordered 4 different flavors but sadly it was hard to tell them apart. They all taste pretty much the same with a hint of the flavor you are expecting. The cake is so dry and crumbly and the icing is way too sugary sweet to even enjoy. Most of the $18 ended up in the trash.
