An institution in West Sacramento. They have been here for ages. I've been here twice before. Once for breakfast with my husband and another time with my girlfriends. They are open from 6:30am - 2:30pm depending on the day. They are always bustling. You can park in-front or they have a private lot so you can also park in back. Parking can be tight sometimes and the spaces could be larger. Today I was meeting my girlfriends for lunch. Our date was for 12:30pm. Some people arrived early and got us a table. I could have been one of those early birds, but I was outside checking in and taking a picture of the iconic sign. I'm sorry that was all the pictures I took, I was too busy gabbing with my friends to capture the moment on film. Amazingly there were 10 of us. We had to pull over a 2nd table. Thankfully there was another table to pull over as 4 people arrived a little later than the rest of us. The place was bustling with patron, but there was still room for our large group. Service was great. Soon as we arrived they took our drink orders, gave us our menus and let us settle in. Then they came around a 2nd and then a 3rd time as we arrived in waves. Yes, I gave a large tip for all their extra service. They even let us divide up the tabs so there was 1-2 people on each tab. Their new mini computer makes it easier for them to do separate checks. I think that is one of the main reasons we come here as they let us do separate checks. I had the Cobb salad and it was phenomenal. They have the option of getting a half salad but, it's only a dollar or so less so I got the full salad and had leftovers. I love their cobb salad, this is my 2nd I got it at my First Ladies lunch. Why is it so good you may ask. Everything is in large chucks. The chicken is pieces of real grilled chicken, not tiny cubes, but large pieces, the bacon also comes in large pieces and there is plenty of bacon, eggs are in quarters, the avocado is in slices, then there are olives, I'm not sure why there are olives as I don't recall them on Cobb salads in other places, it's not a deal breaker as I do like olives, but I'm always surprised to see them. It also comes with blue cheese crumbles and blue cheese dressing and they give you a whole dish of dressing so you don't feel like you have to skimp. I am not a blue cheese fan so I asked for no crumbles and asked for ranch instead of blue cheese. The Ranch dressing is so good. My girlfriend loves the olives and ate those first. read more

I get that this is a neighborhood place and it certainly was busy on a Sunday mid morning. Service was mostly kind and caring. We were taken care of quickly but our two breakfast orders took a while to come out. Took a while to get the refills and even longer to get the sugar packets. I ordered the chilaquiles special, which I was looking forward to. I had planned to get the breakfast enchiladas but realized they were made with flour tortillas (they're supposed to be corn). These also weren't chilaquiles. Or they were pretty dry. A lump of soggy fried chips tossed in cheese and scrambled egg and --the big surprise: chicken shredded up, well this just was a mess. By the time it came to me, the chilaquiles were fairly cold too. They ruined what should be a fresh and saucy dish. It didn't help that the refried beans next to the dish did not seem fresh either. The taste was almost from a can. The pancakes we got to share, a short stack, were ok but they were too dense and thick. My friend got the Denver omelette and he was pretty pleased. I reached over and tried the hash browns and they absolutely under seasoned. Salsa they brought didn't help much as it was a pale Pace picante variety. Suuuch a mixed bag! I don't know where to begin. Let's start with a positives. The service has always been fantastic. The menu is good. The food is decent. The price prices are quite reasonable, which is something I really appreciate. There are a couple of big negatives. First is the temperature. Every single time we've been in there it's been freezing. Ridiculously freezing. The air-conditioning blows hard even in the winter. It's really uncomfortable. Every. Single. Time. i've literally had to go out to my car and get a coat in order to eat my breakfast. The second is a bigger concern. Cleanliness. On a prior visit, we saw an employee drop a plastic cup on the floor, bend down, pick it up and put it back in the stack to be used. Gross. I did report this and they told me it was his first day. OK whatever, I won't worry about it. On my most recent visit, the bathroom was disgusting. Like about as disgusting as it possibly could be. I don't know what was going on in the second stall, but it smelled so bad. In general it's just not a clean restaurant. You can see this from when you walk in the door. This is probably the biggest concern I have. It truly is a mixed bag so I don't know if I can recommend it anymore. read more

Carol's has been in business for many years and is a very popular restaurant. It was very busy on a Monday morning. This was my first time eating here in over 10 years. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs which was very filling and delicious. It came with a large fried steak, gravy, 2 eggs, 2 pieces of toast, and choice of potatoes (breakfast potatoes or hash browns); I ordered the breakfast potatoes. The portion was large and the steak was crispy and delicious! The gravy was a cream based gravy which complimented the steak, eggs, and potatoes well. The toast is standard sliced bread. The potatoes were flavored well and slightly crispy. Even though it was busy the employees were friendly and hospitable. The interior is old and outdated with a t-bar tile ceiling similar to an office with older carpet as this is an older establishment. They have some funny signs/decor around the store. We got there around noon and were seated right away. It was still busy. There's a front and back entrance. It's a simple restaurant with kind staff. I ordered the eggs Benedict and enjoyed it a lot. They give a generous amount of hollandaise. I wasn't the biggest fan of the home fries potato's bc I would've enjoyed more flavor and more crisp but next time I'd probably order hash browns. My bf ordered the chorizo and eggs which was different because they use beef chorizo instead of pork and we've never had that before. It was really yummy from the bite I had. It's on the east end of West Capitol Ave. I came in, and the place is bright and clean. Everybody was extremely friendly and helpful. It's a simple "coffee shop vibe." I decided to have the steak and feta omelette, and for my side, I chose grits. I was very happy with my breakfast. The eggs were good, and they were very generous with the fillings. All of the fillings played very well together. The feta gave the omelette a nice "tang.." the only thing I could possibly say, was while the steak strips were delicious, they were a tad bit chewy. It's not worth taking off a star, because at the price point for this omelette, I did not expect filet mignon. It was an extremely good omelette. The grits were delicious and just the right texture, the toast was fine, the coffee was good, and they kept my cup full. It was an extremely reasonably priced breakfast. First time visit while in town. Chose the green chili breakfast enchiladas we're not disappointing. The chili was great perfect portions of both egg and meat. The meat was so tender juicy and tasteful came with beans. Beans were refried and lightly cheese hit the spot. The other item we ordered was the grits and blueberry pancake pancakes. The portions are huge you can actually share. The coffee was amazing. I had about four refills. Every refill was nice and hot. The service was excellent you sit where you want we had about four servers. Ask us if we needed anything to drink right from the get go. update: was in West Sac today and decided to see if this local diner has changed. The answer is no...and that is a good thing. If you want to experience the ambiance of a locally owned diner...this is your place. It is your neighborhood type of restaurant, no thrills, nothing pretentious, just basic decent grub. A place for hard working families. The price point is excellent. Food preparation is decent. And the service is on point. So what did i order. Florentine omelette: spinach, cheese, mushrooms, onions. The omelette itself was just slightly overcooked. The roasted potatoes were tender but didn't have any crispy outside texture. I also substituted the toast or biscuit with 2 mini pancakes that were not undercooked and had a sweet flavor...kinda reminded me of the pancakes that were served at Annie's in citrus heights before they closed down. Again- i was not looking for a 5 star restaurant nor are they positioning themselves as one. it is just a very nice local diner. A place friends and families can gather and have a very enjoyable meal. The wait staff here are also very efficient, friendly, and ensure your mug of coffee is filled. nice. This review might be a bit more emotional than most on here but every time I miss my abuela I come here. The food is just honest, home-cooked food and it's not meant to be pretentious or overthought. Its plates all made fresh -- no non-sense. We always sit down quickly, the place probably has a buzz from the amount of conversations happening around you. You get caught checking out all the posters and before you know it the food comes within 5-8 minutes. Every. Single. Time. And I know I can say that after coming here at least 40 times. Jaime is usually the one up front and has become my favorite server. The food is consistently solid. I have never had a meal that I didn't love. The restaurant is homey and comforting. It feels like a hug from your grandma. If you're a fan of bread pudding, you must try theirs. It's made in house and is a hefty serving. I still have dreams about it. Came in for a quick breakfast because we were in the area. I liked that they had outside parking but also a parking lot in back since there is limited parking. When you walk it it is seat yourself so you can sit wherever. The waitress was nice and the place had a mom/pop feel. They were all very nice and pleasant. I love a great diner. Classic food. Classic service. A taste of yesteryear. When friends suggested that we head over to West Sacramento and go to Carol''s Restaurant, game on! I figured, a bit of nostalgia might await me. I had no idea that I was in for, an experience that definitely should not be repeated or experienced by anyone. For what it's worth, this place is busy. People waiting, people dining, and a wait staff that is definitely spread too thin. We entered through the backside door, but they're also as a front door entrance. Both sides seem to be taking names for the waitlist, but it's unclear as to if those two become one, or they just seat however they want to. The restaurant should smell like tasty food being prepared, and instead, it was very rank, and the atmosphere was very dismal. I secretly wanted the servers to look like the servers from the TV show Alice "Mel's Dinet". They didn't. If they had, that may have improved the experience aspect. it felt like it took forever for us to have menus and water brought to the table, and have time to peruse the menu. The cutlery was dirty, the water glasses were pretty much the same, and had we not been there with friends, we more than likely would've gotten up and left. I decided to order steak and eggs because when I chatted with the waitress about it, she said it was one of the most popular dishes, and it was really tasty. Talk about overselling really bad food. The steak was inedible, the eggs, I don't even know what to say about them, other than the fact that they smelled bad, and I just wasn't gonna touch them at that point. The side of potatoes, who messes up potatoes?! Well, apparently, Carol's does. I literally could not eat this food. Did the waitress come over and check on us? Of course not. We aren't usually diner people, but needed something relatively quick and hearty on a road trip down south. We chose Carol's because of the close location to the interstate, their early opening hours, and the menu that had something for everyone. And it worked out great! First of all, there was one woman working the entire floor alone. I watched her service 9 tables, several patrons at the counter, and manage at least 6 Door Dash orders solo and she was incredible. Positive attitude, hustled, and worked that place like a consumate pro. Hats off to this woman and her incredible stamina and work ethic. The food was good, filling, and very economical. Less than $10 a plate for a huge amount of food that was pretty tasty! I ordered the corned beef hash (fresh corned beef, not canned) and it was good. Hubby got breakfast quesadillas and was very pleased. Kid ordered the kids pancake meal which came in cute shapes and she was unable to finish it all. Free coffee refill were appreciated, especially so early in the morning! We noticed a huge table of rotating WSPD officers occupying a side of the room, so this must be a popular spot to start or finish a shift. We enjoyed seeing our men and women in blue conversing and enjoying a local spot. All in all satisfying meal, quick and friendly service, and a great bang for your buck. We've been coming to Carol's Restaurant for nearly 15 years now, and it's my husband's and my go-to spot every Sunday. What keeps us coming back is the nostalgic, classic American diner vibe--along with the generous portions, friendly service, and prices that still make sense compared to other big-name diners that charge more for less. We've had the pleasure of meeting the owners, Carol and Raymond, and we absolutely love that they're hands-on. They're never above jumping in to serve guests, bus tables, or show off their chef skills. Sorry, Ray--when Momma Carol makes my burger patty medium-well with the salt just right, it's perfection But don't worry, you're still my second-favorite cook! Every meal comes out hot and satisfying. On weekends, it can get busy, so expect a 15-25 minute wait depending on the time--but it's always worth it. If you have a party of five or more, calling ahead to see if you can reserve a table is a smart move. The staff is always a pleasure--shoutout to Rachel, Jamie, and Heidi. We miss you, Matt! My family and I lived very close to Carol's so we would walk there almost weekly to eat. The staff and food is ALWAYS wonderful!! After moving to Woodland in 2022 we still go there often.
