I came here yesterday with my best friends and this place is super cute!! From the interior design, to the plating, to the food, everything is presented beautifully. However, I think the prices are a little steeper than what I'd prefer to pay and the portions are pretty small...I know, I know, I'm not one of those folks that'll spend more for less but if you're going for the experience then it is absolutely worth the $25 (including 20% tip) you'll spend on a salad and coffee as I did. I'd say this place is worth the stop, but for me the next trip will probably be just to visit the connected coffee shop and not the restaurant. P. Went here for a birthday lunch on a very nice May afternoon! I love saving new spots to try around town, and had saved Carpenters Hall months ago--I decided a birthday lunch was a great opportunity to finally go! I really enjoyed our experience and will definitely be going back. The service was friendly and welcoming, and the food was delicious. I had an appetizer as my meal, my husband had the burger, and we shared a bowl of fries. The salt cod brandade serving is definitely a little small for a whole meal, but we had multiple stops to make and I just wanted a small lunch! All in all, really lovely. read more

I have tried their breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner menu items - loved all of them! They are consistently delicious with stellar service. In my opinion, the bar has the best seats in the house. The bartenders are always convivial and manage to focus both on getting drinks in mouths and making good conversation. Food is a bit overpriced. I feel like I'm at a test kitchen that's trying to figure out what they're really good at but just misses the mark by trying to be too trendy. The best item on the menu was the tuna tartare. I really wanted the burger that everyone talks about but it wasn't on the menus. Which is confusing to me because they have tuna, rabbit, steak, shrimp and other proteins... so why not ground beef??? Anyway, the experience was less than great, but better than mediocre. read more

Really cool hotel & restaurant.....overall, interesting and unique menu & bar, albeit a very limited wine list. Overall, our dinner & service was good....but what hurt the overall experience was the amount of salt in every item we ordered. Appetizer, salads and entrees. We ordered a side of their great fries (which we've enjoyed before) but they were practically inedible, there was so much salt on them. And unfortunately, it negatively affected our ability to actually taste the rest of the meal. This is usually a total 5 star spot, but someone had a heavy hand on the salt shaker last night :( read more

The location is very Instagram worthy and has a very retro vibe. The food was good but it didn't knock my socks off. It doesn't stand out to other brunch places in Austin but if you're in the area, this is a great choice. I ordered the 3 Migas and it was decent but like I said, nothing special. I gave this place 4 stars average based on 5 stars for venue+service but only 3 stars for the actual food. This really neat 50's/60's themed restaurant is the restaurant/bar/cafe for the adjacent and similarly themed Carpenter Hotel. Both are simply and beautifully designed with a functional courtyard connecting them. Pleasant hostess and server took care of my party. Hence the 5 stars for venue+service. We had a late breakfast here, so the 3 stars we'd give for the actual food is based on some of their popular breakfast items we tried: Omelet - the texture of the omelet itself is off and can best be described as a flavorless custard with some indistinguishable cheeses inside. The small salad and hearty buttery bread that came with were decent. Hash brown - the potatoes were okay but the sauce they put on it is a little heavy (basically tasted like a Tex-Mex queso sauce commonly found around Austin). Heart shaped pancakes - this was pretty good. Decent balance of faint sweetness contrasted with the fresh tartness of the berries. All said, since the venue is cool and the dinner menu items look appetizing, we'd consider coming back to see if the dinner food is better. read more

Had the grilled pimento cheese and the burger. The word "grilled" is a little off because the only thing that was grilled is the bun. This is fine, as I was pretty unclear on how they were planning to grill that pimento cheese anyway. This is a messy sandwich, definitely overfilled. It was tasty, but I confirmed once and for all that pimento cheese generally isn't worth it. Great fries. Good burger. The place is almost embarrassingly instagrammable. Also, the two top tables are TOO CLOSE TOGETHER. When you can't get into the booth side without fully wiping your ass across your neighbor's meal, ya too close. You can't help but listen to every thing other people are saying during lulls in conversation, and I don't really like to be close enough to a stranger to hear the sound of their chewing, but that's my own deal. My boyfriend and I went here for the first time for a celebratory dinner. We weren't fans, unfortunately. The First Rodeo cocktail was tasty, but that was the only thing we liked. The blistered peppers had a good aioli, but they were kind of mushy. The Cesar salad was a little bland...the croutons were the best part. Then we had the potatoes with black olive aioli, which weren't good. The black olives made the aioli kind of sour. The quail on rice with tomato balsamic was not edible. The rice was so sour and pungent from the balsamic we couldn't eat it. We had high hopes for this place, but even the decor and vibe wasn't for us... At some point our server was MIA for a while, and it took our main dish (the quail) a while to come out...she didn't come by and let us know what was going on. it seemed like she didn't even know what had happened. I really don't like giving bad reviews because I know people work hard to get the food out and everything, but constructive feedback may be helpful as this is a newer restaurant in Austin. If you do decide to go, might be a good place for cocktails. read more

I LOVED this space - it feels beautiful and contemporary but they've retained enough of the original features for it not to blend it to the endless identikit subway tiled masses of bars and restaurants that are slowly taking over cities everywhere. We had an 8 (and a toddler) top - and despite the restaurant being bustling had efficient, non invasive service throughout - drinks were topped up by magic, appetisers materialised without overly verbose introductions and we were given excellent advice about our food choices. The bean dip to start was delicious - I could have done with a LOT more of that excellent cracker bread. I split a Caesar salad (chicory, avocado and the crispiest croutons) - very good - and then shared kingfish (or king mackerel as I have usually seen it called) which was pretty perfect and the steak frites - which was a huge chunk of meat (they claim the house cooks it 'medium' but ours was definitely the rare side of medium rare - works for me but I'd recommend requesting it well done unless you like a lot of blood) and rather over salted fries. The couple of pasta dishes I sampled were definitely something I'd happily come back to try in full I loved a lot of things about this place - not quite 5, but nearly there for sure. Went for dinner last night and every dish was phenomenally delicious. Service was great too. My friend and I got the crunchy vegetables, Caesar salad (those croutons omg!), cavatelli (so simple and delicious - reminded me of dishes I had in Italy), steak frites, chicken spaetzle, chocolate mousse (so good with the pecans and a little salt, maybe even olive oil). Cute cafe area inside The Carpenter Hotel. My friend and I got brunch here, and loved the atmosphere of the place. I got a caesar salad which was good but a little pricey, and my friend got the migas which were really good. The heart shaped waffles were DELICIOUS and brought back a sense of nostalgia. The menu isn't too extensive and the food is a bit pricey, but the quality is good and you're paying for the atmosphere as well. I'm struggling to decide what I love more....brunch, dinner, or late night menu. It's almost unfair that I have to choose between the three because they are all absolutely perfect. You need to get the breakfast hash brown because it will ruin all other breakfast potatoes for you in the best way possible. The chopped salad is exactly what you need to compensate the delicious burger you're about to order next. When ordering the burger, you have to get the double. Just trust me. It is hands down THE BEST burger I have ever had. At dinner the caviar is an absolute steal and who doesnt love eating ruffles while being fancy? The Frito misto is so unique and delicious. If I talked about ever item on their menu and my love for it, we'd have a short story. But the absolute greatest thing they have is their chicken schnitzel. It is so big, so crispy, juicy, perfectly seasoned, and the black garlic on top of it ties the whole dish together. And don't worry, if you can't wake up in time for brunch, the hash brown is available on their late night menu with caviar. The world's greatest burger is also available on the late night menu. The worst thing about carpenter's hall is that I can't order the entire menu....or at least I shouldn't! read more

I had lunch at Carpenters Hall on Monday afternoon with a girlfriend and checked out the cafe and the grounds as well. I absolutely loved everything about this place. The grounds are simple and warm, it's truly a little quiet getaway right off S Lamar. The cafe was adorable and the food looked great. Carpenters Hall is the full service restaurant in the hotel and it's beautiful. The bar is pretty big and the restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. Service was great from the second we arrived and our waitress was so sweet. The lunch menu is perfect! I loved the simplicity of it yet there was more than enough to choose from. We ordered the citrus salad and the crunchy rice and quinoa bowl - both were fresh, delicious and plated beautifully. I wanted to spend the entire afternoon here! I will definitely be back and this is a spot I would take visitors to for lunch/dinner for sure! read more

The restaurant here is super rad. The ambiance is excellent and the staff was really friendly. But, by far, my favorite part is the fact that you can get a Burger, Fries, and a Beer for about $12. That's an awesome price for such a fancy looking place. The burger was flipping delicious as too! Inexpensive good food with a clean and friendly atmosphere. What else could you want? This was such a fun and unique experience! And the cutest date night ever! First of all, I had no idea this place existed but I guess it's been there for 2 years. I think that's what our server said. It was a week night and I was in the mood for some ambience. This place did not disappoint everything from the service, the friendliness of the staff and of course the yummy food. The only thing I wished we would of passed on was the cheesy fideos. Wasn't impressed at all. It was soupy and not very flavorful. But let me talk about what was amazing! Our appetizer was to die for! Salt cod brandade. Highly recommend that! The s'mores at the end was so much fun! We also tried the moment in the sun cocktail because we love mezcal that was tasty and delicious. Also, we got the charred cauliflower and that was definitely a highlight! My main course was the mahi. The presentation was beautiful and I found myself ready to lick my plate at the end. All in all a great experience. I want to go back for sure. A total miss on all accounts. We were the only people there on a sort-of holiday Monday at noon. Sat at the bar to avoid the 100% empty dining room. Sat for 10-12 mins without ever seeing a bartender and at least 5-6 staff walk right by us without acknowledgment. Were just ready to leave when the bartender appeared, he was friendly accommodating for the rest of the visit. Bloody Mary was good. Butter leaf salad was good. We order a bottle of red wine to start. Wines by the bottle were pricy but I am assuming good quality. Our bottle was one of the lesser expensive choices in the $40 range. Hubby and I got the vegetables with green goddess and the greens salad with horseradish vinaigrette to start. Green goddess was delicious but the green salad was kinda lame and tasteless. This is my happy place. I love it for brunch, lunch, dinner and late night. If you are early, please try the hash browns. The migas are my favorite although the waffles are also fabulous. My hubs had clams and shut-the-front-door...they were so good. Late night burger and fries can't be beat. The salads are also spectacular and non-calorie laden. And...can we talk about the bar? This review is for the restaurant. Woah if I could give them 6 stars I would! I usually give restaurants a 2-3 month period to get in the groove, but I could not wait to try Carpenter Hall. I am so happy I did not wait. First of all the ambiance is amazing. The restaurant has a mid-century, minimalist, clean look and the service is very attentive. The food most of all is DELICIOUS! We started with the radish and green goddess dressing. Simple concept but perfectly executed. We shared the Caesar and Green salad. Again simple, but very well done. Every detail is thought out, including the chilled plate. I ordered the crispy fluke and spaetzle. The fluke was browned to perfection and the accompanying fennel salad was a zesty contrast. I thoroughly enjoyed the spaetzle. Finally the cocktails and wine list were on point. Our table thoroughly enjoyed the Gamay by the glass. This is the restaurant Austin needs, simple but perfectly delicious food. read more

I'm gluten intolerant and this was well worth it (lol). Also, the Easter appetizers were incredible we got the eggs, and a side of fries. Food was great, but service was beyond awful. It took us over 45 minutes to receive our appetizers. An hour and a half to get our second round of drinks. When asking our waitress about timing, she said they were just "too crowded," yet we were 1 of 3 seated parties in the entire restaurant. She then disappeared for the remainder of the meal until it was time for us to pay. The manager did come and apologize, which we appreciated. I visited for the first time on a Friday afternoon, arriving very hungry, at about 3:30. I had checked the hours, which are listed from early AM to MN. Well, between 3:00 and 5:00, the dining room is in fact NOT OPEN. The bar is open, and the menu is limited to a short list of essentially bar snacks. I ended up sampling several, because, as I said...was HUNGRY. The food quality is truly excellent. Everything was very fresh, and quite tasty. The green salad was a simple, flavorful preparation of butter lettuce, with a few sprigs of light herbs, radish slices, and a light vinaigrette. It was delicious. The bean dip was very good. With very little else to choose from, I ordered the french fries. I would say standard good fare on the fries, and a tasty aioli to complement. My biggest complaint, in addition to having an "open" restaurant, which wasn't REALLY open for anything beyond bar snacks, was the TERRIBLE service I received sitting at the bar. The bartender was initially quite friendly, but after serving my drink, never returned to ask how everything was. I had to work to grab her attention, when I added the fries to my order. After finishing my food, I remained there for a time, doing some work on my computer. There were only a few other patrons, and as it got closer to 5:00, several other staff joined, in preparation for their dinner time. No one cleared the empty plates from in front of me, and no one offered another drink, which I would have ordered, given the chance. It took me approx. 10 minutes to get someone's attention, so that I could request my bill. In summary, I suspect all the food on the menu is probably really good. Just don't look for much of it in the late afternoon. Also...it's been a very long time since I have been served with such poor service. I left feeling entirely frustrated. read more
