I love this place. They have a different way that you have to actually order your food and such but it was such a great atmosphere. My client and I went here for lunch. I ordered the cat fish tacos and french fries. This was the best meal that I have had in Birmingham. The way that they fried catfish is unlike any other restaurant that I have ever been to and I travel a lot. The french fries were so fresh and so great. You can tell that they were freshly cut and freshly made there was nothing frozen about these potatoes. They have a chipotle or garlic a Oli that is out of this world!!! A group of friends came in around 5pm for happy hour. The atmosphere was very hipster-ish, so just my type. The details of the space particularly were impressive, i.e repurposed wood and hammers for door handles. There are a few pinball machines tucked away on the corner which is pretty awesome as well. I had a beer, local of course, and the selection was great overall. I ordered the oxtail chilli and jalapeño peanuts as a snack. I was surprised how big the portion was for the chilli. What a great place! I've only been once, but I know Carrigan's will become a regular haunt for me whenever I'm in town. Offering a cavernous warehouse appeal, the interior is arranged with a unique decor that is truly appealing to the likes of me. We decided on sitting outside to enjoy the beautiful weather the other evening, but inside is extremely inviting (as is mentioned by just about every yelper in their review. Believe!) I love cocktail bars that have non elusive, non pretentious bartenders (the 'tenders here are so damn nice and attentive!) I love cocktail bars that have bubbly because lately I've not been drinking cocktails as much as I used to (I still appreciate! I'm just more into wine). I love cocktail bars that have food available. Carrigan's has a good selection of food, from corn dogs to vegetarian options. It ain't just bar food, though. Corn dogs, salads, sliders, sounds pretty basic, right? It's on a whole other level. I had a falafel that rivals some of the best I've ever had in authentic Middle Eastern restaurants. Every falafel lovers know that it's so easy to make them inedible. That you get an option for it over salad or in a sandwich is really appreciated! Although the falafel comes with tzatziki, I asked them to leave it off. The salad comes with goat cheese sprinkled on top, but it's just as easy for them to leave it off, so if you're vegan, there are options and they are pretty cool about that. Tahini would be awesome (and goes better with falafel anyway), but that's a suggestion. The falafel is actually *that* good that a sauce isn't even necessary. If I lived in Birmingham, I'd imagine Carrigan's would definitely make my grub-down list. We went a little later, but I bet the porch is a great spot to enjoy a pint on a perfect day. Inside was pretty packed and great for people watching but I was quite the hangry hangry hippo, so I ordered nearly everything from the bar, and by everything I mean Loaded Fries, Kung Fu Wings, and the Smoked Duck Tacos. The Smoked Duck Tacos were uh-mazing. You know when you're chowin' and you look down and you're like, "who friggen stole my taco?" That's how I felt with these tacos 'cause they Houdini'd into my belly. Then I set my sights on the Kung Fu Wings like Bruce Lee "Enter The Dragon"-style. Those wings never saw it coming. They were a good size, not spicy but more tangy, with bits of peanuts to give some crunch to the juicy meat. But at this point...my belly was like, "you know where those tacos went right?" My eyes had begun to glaze over at this point as the hunger that I had stomped in with was raising its little white flag. I dabbled a little into the loaded fries. I say if you get these, intermittently dive in or they'll softly succumb to the loads of chili, gouda, and hipster ranch atop their little tater selves. I washed all of this down with a local Good People Pale Ale on draft. I would be interested to try a cocktail next time from what I hear in the other reviews. The service was a little tough to wrangle to close out as it seemed to be a busier night but I think that would be expected at a spot like this. I was staying at a hotel, but chose to doggy bag the rest of the wings. I ordered a margarita and they don't have the tequila that I asked for SO they make a recommendation....BUT didn't tell me that it would cost me $25 for a drink! Winner (period) This is one of the best restaurants in Birmingham. Dinner, late night snack, just a few drinks, happy hour drinks, a few beers, lunch and a beer, WHATEVER, this is a go to place. Very varied seating options including the awesome rooftop patio (sunset in the spring is gorgeous), uniquely delicious twists on typical bar food, meticulously made craft cocktails, and a great craft beer list (sometimes having some of the most limited release beers in Alabama), and servers that are on top of their game while being very friendly are the components that come together to make this one of the best in Birmingham. FOOD Well I have to say it, the corn dog is where its at. I dont know if it is the sauce or what but it is just so awesome. Do yourself a favor and get that oxtail chili on the fries and get some extra of the guajillo ketchup and hipster ranch. The last time I was in I switched it up a little and got the double burger. Wow was it awesome too! DRINKS I have always been impressed with the beer list here and I am really hard to please when it comes to beer. They almost always have something on the list that makes me think I am so glad to be here on this night to get this one off beer that is probably only being poured at a handful of restaurants in the state. So happy I got the chance last night to turn this place from a bookmark into an actual stop. Can't believe it took me this long to try it out but, thanks to the event we had last week, with Carrigan's being one of the vendors, I gave the real location a try. Location: Upon arriving I wasn't really sure that I was in the right place. It is a brick building nestled in the downtown Birmingham Area and the amount of parking space offered is awesome. Ambiance: The inside is sort of rustic yet classy and perfectly lit. Not too many places like this. It would be fitting for a get together with friends, casual date night spot, and I would also feel comfortable enough to bring my clients here. The grub: I can only comment on the food and even though it is considered to be a "bar" I came here and will continue to come here for the dining! I was blown away by how good they made a ceasar salad. I tried the Falafel salad and since they ran out of mixed greens they put it on the ceasar salad. It featured kale rather than just plain regular lettuce(very thoughtful). Their dressings and sauces are made in house and I would buy the Tzaziki Sauce if they sold it. I will definately try an old fashioned the next time I come and want a drink. I was watching them make it and the bar staff seem very experienced in mixing. Carrigan's can get pretty crowded but the ambiance, views from the lower patio, rooftop terrace, great food, and handcrafted cocktails are worth the visit. Carrigan's has become one of my favorite places to go after work on Friday evenings with friends. Recently, a friend from college visited the area from Washington, D.C. and he instantly fell in love with it. He asked me when did Birmingham become so nice overnight? I must honestly say that we are lucky to have this establishment in the city! I've been to Carrigan's at least a dozen times at this point and there's good reason for it! The venue itself is expanse and has great vibe, with large windows, brick, a patio and rooftop (great for summer weather). The beer list is fairly large and has a great variety, and even though they don't have the *largest* of liquors selections they still manage to make a great Old Fashion as well as other signature cocktails. The food, be it the appetizers or the entrees, are all great and I would recommend trying a few different apps and explore a little bit. If you're looking for a quiet dinner, however, you might want to rethink since the inside can get pretty loud on weekend nights (it didn't bother me, but definitely a preference thing). Most times I've gone, Carrigans has been pretty much packed, so do try to get early and find some seating for your crew. The bar service can take some time, especially during peaks hours, so a little patience might be needed. I made it to Carrigans Public House on Friday night with some young friends. I characterize the restaurant as "trendy" and "hipster", but I'm not exactly an authority on either. I found the place inviting and comfortable despite being from a different generation. My friends recommended the corn dog, and that got my interest. This is not your father's "state fair" corn dog. This is a gourmet, hand breaded concoction that is made from fresh ingredients. The corn dog arrived on a plate with a generous helping of fresh cut fries. The restaurant was dark, and at first glance it looked like a frozen banana on a stick. The menu describes the corn dog as "street style, hipster ranch, guajillo ketchup, cotiji, cilantro, fries" (I had to lookup guajillo and cotiji). The chef was very creative, and I think it worked. I didn't have high expectations, but I thought the dish was very good. Take a chance and give this one a try. One of our friends ordered the Kung Fu Wings, and everyone got to sample. I like wings, and these were unique and delicious. The sauce is described as "sweet chili sauce, crushed peanuts, ginger lime cream". The sauce was flavorful, and eating them was messy. Kudos to the chef for experimenting, and developing a nice combination. We also shared an order of the Jalapeño Boiled Peanuts. Nice flavor, and not too spicy. I've been to carrigans a few times now and my most recent outing was Saturday night with friends. Carrigans put on a show after grabbing a couple of drinks we headed to the roof to quip away whilst the storm was ominously brewing. I had the mill city white from Avondale which is one of my favourites at present. I'm pleased to report carrigans has a wide range of beers including local draughts. The beers is cold and delicious. My girlfriend got the deception cocktail which she loved. Carrigans has a large cocktail list and whilst they do take some time to prepare the are made with professionalism and attention to detail. After the rain did come in we moved inside for some eats. The decor of carrigans is classic and modern there is plenty of seating however the bar does get crowded due to its popularity so sometimes getting s table is tough. The meals are excellent we had the corndog which I believe is their signature dish. It was superb, great flavour and could eat it over and over again. Other members of our Party got a kale salad and steak. Both dishes were also great. The entire menu looks amazing and I can't wait to try more of their food. Carrigan's is a great place to visit for when you want to meet up friends/colleagues after work or on the weekend. I would liken it to a bar with food as a plus. I do not think this is a great dine in, sit down restaurant. Definitely not kid friendly. They have lots of seat yourself seating in the main area and outside, but if you come during a busy time it will obviously be more difficult to find seating. The atmosphere is laid back but nice, lots of young (and not so young) professionals having a good time. As for the food, because that is mainly what I care about, it is okay. They have a small menu filled with "bar food". The last time we came, husband had a burger and a ton of fries, and I had the street tacos with tilapia. Some fish tacos, if you will. I can't say how the burger tasted, and fries are always welcome in my tummy so those were delicious. As for the fish tacos, they were just okay. They could be better done...definitely not worth $10. I feel like Carrigan's tries to go for an upscale but casual feel, but there's something lacking. I don't think I'm a fan of the metal trays, but some would say I'm just nit picking. Probably one of my most favorite bars in Birmingham! My classmates and I have come a couple times and always enjoy our night. Tried the corn dog and it was better than anything you could ever wish for in a corn dog with a salty bite, crunchy texture, and slight creaminess from the sauce that's on it. The fries that come with it do a good job of utilizing all the extra sauce. Wouldn't recommend if you're tryna eat healthy, but it's a good item to indulge in occasionally. If you don't like spicy, then I'd recommend you ask them to leave off the spicy ketchup. It's got some heat, and while I like spicy I thought the dog might be better without it. They have a very nice big bar with plenty of room to eat comfortably (at least the Wednesday night I was there). The draft selection was nice. I drank two nitro Xocovezas by Stone. We were visiting from our of town and we typically like to chat with bartenders and servers to get an idea of where the next stop should be. The guys working at the bar wanted nothing to do with us. I had the lamb sandwich and it was good but needed some acidity. The fries were a huge disappointment- especially since many of their menu items were built around fries, so I expected them to be good. They were super over cooked and sooooo greasy. We also ordered the samosas which were fine. There was also no beer menu, and since the bartenders were mute, we had to guess on which beer to order. Difficult when you're from out of state. Stopped in for a quick, casual dinner with the husband. Decor was typical for a big city cocktail bar and surprisingly on trend for Birmingham. Acoustics were perfect - the place was a little over half full and the background noise was loud enough to create a buzz but I could easily hear my husband talking. Food was fine; hummus plate, pork cheek sliders for me, burger for the husband. The old-fashioned that I had was delicious - love the oversized ice cubes. It was confusing as first timers to figure out that we were supposed to order at the bar and squeeze in between people to do so. Management should set a couple designated areas for ordering. You Gotta Go.... This is a cool place. Unique atmosphere, open, with some interesting archetecture. The food was great. Not outstanding, but great. My only complaint is that we stood in line to order. It was a bit confusing for us first timers, and if you want a second drink say, you get back in line... They should think of a better way to handle your new orders once you are seated. They have some really good beers on their menu. It appears to be a place gaining appeal... Bottom line, it's the atmosphere that makes this place along with the drinks. I would go back. It was fun. read more

An astonishing surprise of a restaurant! We all loved it, my son had the Dali Lama melt, my husband had the double burger with delicious fries and I had the panko chicken with the Gouda grits and collards.....a definite must try for sure! read more

I wrote this reveiw once and was asked to delete it by one of my family members. Seems when I rave about a place, it is OK. When I don't rave but tell my honest evaluation it is some kind of sin against humanity. Carrigan's Public House: Location: GREAT. The Roof top deck is a wonderful place for a drink, talk with friends and if you have nice neighbors, a cigar (Always ask before you smoke, just the nice thing to do.) The location is why it is a three star vs. a two star. Service: What service?? You order at the bar including food. They give you a number to put on your table. When food or drink order is completed some one brings it to you. If something is wrong you have to go back to the bar. Let me add, I could live with this if the folks behind the bar looked like they enjoy some aspect of what they are doing. A smile occasionally would be nice. Food: I will just say this, I am not into the menu they are serving. I had a salad with a 1/2 of chicken breast on it and it was not to my liking. My wife had a corn dog that everyone raved about and the item was awful. Pretty bad when a person says, if you take the batter off the corn dog, the hot dog is OK. A Friend of mind had a steak over greens and said it was average at best and would not order it again. Advice: Go for a drink and view. Don't go for a meal or snack. If you want a beer or a drink and to hang out it is fine. The food is not good. Greasy fries and basic bar food. Nothing on the menu is really that appealing and there are far better places to hang out with way better food. I went to grab a drink or 2 and a sandwich. I tried the lamb sandwich and the lamb was ok (though too salty) but everything else was bad. I asked for the pesto mayo on the side, that didn't happen. The sandwich was on thin sandwich bread and they added thick onion rings so people look at it and go ahhh! But it was so salty I couldn't finish it. So if a lot of food is your thing and quality isn't maybe this is the place for you. Nobody needs a gigantic pile of greasy fries. There were enough of 2-3 people. I left almost all. Service at the bar was mixed and sometimes mixed up. No clear cut person in charge and all couldn't smile. Except for one woman who seemed pleasant. I really like it. Even they don't have full menu between 2pm -5pm what I got was excellent. At least the crew have enough time to explain and make good recommendations. I'm very impress with their ability for clarify questions and concerns. I would like to see it during peak time. read more
