I love Carrigans! I always recommend out of towners to stop by here. It's a neat spot in Birmingham. It's a full bar & has great food. One of the classy places in town. The food is so good! I recently came here and got the Panko chicken & pork sandwiches. Both were really yummy. The drinks are good as well but can be very strong. I've always had a good experience. Wow. The kale Caesar salad with ahi tuna is amazing. Surprisingly fulfilling and doesn't make you feel bloated or full. Awesome venue with craft cocktails of all kinds. No tv's though so don't expect to watch any college football lol. Definitely hipster, and trendy but very nice. Everything made other than the beer in the cans is like a production so expect to pay a little more for drinks as they measure everything like scientists. All in all a very nice gastropub. read more

Interesting bar with fairly unique bar food. I had the double burger, which was well-cooked and tasty. Best part is it came with some off the best fries available. Really good and crispy without being hard. I would be tempted to just get fries on my next visit. (The dipping sauces need help though.) Bar: good selection of drinks and craft beers, including some Cigar City choices. My wife had a Deception cocktail which she enjoyed, followed by a Steak Beets and Greens salad...not my choice but she raved about it. My daughter had the Mac and Cheese that had brisket in it and taste was excellent. I met a friend here recently. I'm not a resident of Birmingham and she is new to the area; we found Carrigan's simply by chance (thank you Yelp app!). We met for a drink and an appetizer about 6:30 and both enjoyed ourselves. Bar tenders were knowledgeable and there was a wide range of cocktails on their drink menu you may not typically find in a bar in Alabama. Good beer selection as well. Great selection of craft beers, many local selections as well which I appreciate. For food we split their amazing fries with chili and cheese and they were just delicious. The only thing I did not love was having to order at the bar (both for food and drinks). They don't have any servers at all. Totally subjective though and it was still a really cool place. read more

This is one of the first places I had ever been to when moving to Birmingham. My dad had happened to stumble upon it and I am so glad he did! It is a really cool looking warehouse refurnished with rooftop seating and if you're lucky you might get the prized table in the elevator shaft. They have the beers from all the major breweries in the area and their food is amazing. If you were ever going to pick a day to go. Monday. It's PB&J night=Random weekly oven made pizza, PBR, and a shot of Jameson. All for only $10. You might be hesitant with the random pizza each week, but whether it's artichokes, spinach or whatever other random ingredient the pizza is always on point. I have also heard great things about their corn dogs! It's one of the top places in Birmingham in my opinion and perfect if you are still deciding between a chill night or a starting point for a long night out. read more

We were in Birmingham this weekend for a wedding and this placed pulled up on our Yelp lunch search so we decided to give it try. As expected, great selection of craft beers both local and out of state. I had wine and my boyfriend tried a couple of different beers but what really blew us away here was the food. I had the hummus plate and was blown away by the quality for $7. This place really cares about the quality and preparation of their food. My boyfriend had the corn dog and fries and while it sounds like typical bar food, both were on such another level it made me wish we lived closer so we could visit and try everything. The service left much to be desired but I'm pretty sure that's the vibe they're going for. Carrigan's stands out in my mind as a bar with one of the best atmospheres in downtown Birmingham, and the great food and drinks definitely add to that! This isn't a place where you mosey up to the bar and watch the bartender quickly make you a watered down drink so he can get back to playing on his phone...the staff at Carrigan's really takes pride in their drinks. It may not be the fastest bar in Birmingham, but that's because they are doing things right. Side note: I LOVE that they make their Moscow Mules with Birmingham's own Buffalo Rock Ginger Ale (aka Nectar of the Gods). The food is also very good and consistent. I do wish they would bring back the house made pastrami that they had when they first opened. Great party spot. Ya, it is loud, but a great place with your significant other, or group of friends. The bar selections are endless. They mostly carry local beers, but a few others if that is your taste. If you prefer a whiskey sour or a gin tonic, they can do that too. They have a private upstairs bar area for all types of parties or special occasions such as new years' eve. The outside patios are awesome also. You can see a lot of downtown from the upstairs deck. The absolute best Old Fashioned I have ever had! Look folks, I'm a foodie and work in healthcare. So I value good food, great atmosphere, and above others customer service. My free time is precious. This place has an amazing atmosphere that's very modern with really cool railroad relics inside. It's always super clean! The food is exceptional! Always hot and ready by the time it leaves the kitchen and they find you at your table inside or on the rooftop (which by the way has great city views). I came to Carrigans several times for events. They have a private event space upstairs which is great for meetings or get togethers! Carrigans also have outdoor seating and a cool loft-like seating area. It can be pretty loud at times inside the building so sometimes I prefer sitting outside to hear everybody. I ordered the Dalai Lama burger with the side of fries and it is huge! I had to eat it in pieces! It was a very unique flavor but it can be heavy due to the amount of fried ingredients. I felt pretty groggy afterwards but I don't regret ordering it! I always like to share my meals with my boyfriend and we both ended up pretty full. Just a warning for those who do not like fried onion rings, there is a HUGE onion ring in this burger. But I love onion rings so it worked out for me. By far, one of the most unique, cool, and quality places in town. Whether you're just there for drinks, food, or both... you'll be totally taken care of. For the most part, I'm not a "cocktail bar" kind of guy. I like my bourbon by itself on top of some ice. While at Carrigan's this most recent time, I was talked into getting one of their specialty cocktails called "Fighting Words." I wish I could tell you what all was in it, but I have no idea. It was a Bulleit Bourbon based drink with multiple other ingredients. I'm not talking about non-alcoholic filler ingredients, but put you on your fanny with delicious spiked flavor ingredients. A fantastic way to wet your whistle. As for the food, it all looks insanely good. I can only speak personally about the corn dogs and the pork belly sliders. It would be an insult to call this "bar food." The sliders were perfectly spicy due to the fresh jalapeño toppings. As for the corndog, just look at any of the pictures Yelpers have posted. Old person's guide to Carrigan's: * It's at the Easternmost end of Morris Ave., and there's plenty of parking. * If it's too busy, you have to sit on a rock. If it's REALLY busy, all the rocks will be taken. * There are more hipsters in Birmingham than you realize. * Go order at the counter before you sit down. There is one counter for ordering food & beer, and another for liquor and cocktails. I ordered club soda with my food since they don't serve iced tea, and it was like I'd divided by zero. * The food is very affordable, especially for the quantity and the digs. * It's a bit loud during busy times, but not *El Barrio* loud. The restaurant and decor are gorgeous and expensive-looking. I had the falafel burger and fries, and was really pleased to find something non-gut-busting on a gastropub menu. The sandwich was bright and interesting with a yummy tzatziki sauce. The fries were fantastic. The Oatmeal Cream Pie would be better if it weren't hard-frozen. My friend thought his brat was just OK, but liked his macaroni & cheese with pastrami. If you drink beer, get hungry, have $20, and are under 30, you will absolutely love this place. read more

Love seeing our downtown alive and vibrant with happy Birminghamians!! Carrigan's is obviously a hit with the after-work drinkin crowd. It's a great space to accommodate a lot of guests. The menu is pub food for sure, but with a kick. We had been told it was the new place to try, so we decided to bring along the munchkins and be adventurous. While it worked out this time, we will make sure to leave them home from now on. It wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't raised the volume of the music so much after we had been there for 15 minutes. Its a pub though...so I understand! We had the wings appetizer, YUM! I had the burger...it was ok, but I'll probably hit up a burger joint next time I have a hankering. Our friends ordered the famous corndog, but were not impressed! I wish I had had a try so I could say whether I liked it or not. The table of men next to us had the right idea. The six of them ordered a handful of the appetizers and shared them. First time trying this beloved Birmingham restaurant and we were far from impressed sadly. We ordered at the bar and our food arrived at our table within 4 minutes. I'm always skeptical when a meal can arrive this quickly. We ordered the corn dog, the wings, and "roasted Brussel sprouts." The food had obviously been pre prepared as all of our food was barely warm. Not very ideal for fried food. Along with this the $5 "roasted" sprouts were steamed, mushy and had some pepper tossed on top. We were completely shocked from this meal as we anticipated to be blown away, which is why we chose here for our 6 year anniversary. I want to like Carrigan's more than I actually do. I've come here three or four times and have never had as great of a time as I have hoped for. The good: The building is awesome. Seriously, it's the coolest restaurant/bar building in Birmingham. I think it's most of why I keep going back. The rooftop bar is my favorite place to drink in town. The food! It's excellent. The legendary corn dog deserves its fame. When you've been drinking and it's late, this is the exact thing you crave. The bad: The bartenders. I don't know where Carrigan's gets these bartenders, but they all have that "too cool to be doing this" attitude. I wouldn't mind so much if they were legitimately great at their jobs (a la Collin's Bar), but they're not. They're very slow, easily confused, and seem most at home cracking open a bottle, not making any kind of mixed drink. Which leads to... The drinks. I'm sure Carrigan's has a lot of great beers, but if you're looking for mixed drinks, look elsewhere. They will flat out refuse to make common drinks (amaretto sours, Long Islands, vodka and Red Bull...). I've had to settle with a vodka Sprite every time I've gone to Carrigan's. I've never had a bartender refuse to make a common drink before and it really put a bad taste in my mouth towards the whole place. Overall, I think Carrigan's is worth visiting for beer and food. I have been to Carrigan's twice, once to meet colleagues and once for a political fundraiser. So, I've been downstairs and also upstairs in their special party area. Carrigan's is an older part of town with interesting urban buildings. There is enough parking and its at the end of what seems to be a nice street. I felt safe. The brick building is attractive. The seating outside is quite pleasant and the atmosphere inside is upscale. One sees a lot of young professionals there but people from all ages seem to be there. There is a good selection of drinks and a nice dinner menu. The first time I was there, the waiter didn't seem to give enough attention, but then and the second time I got plenty of quick service by going up to the bar and ordering. People seemed quite pleased by the mixed drinks and beers on tap. The second time, I had the so-called falafel burger. It seemed like a regular ol' black-bean burger to me. It was okay. The side-salad had spinach and beets. It was tasty but small and overly salty. The price seemed about normal for a nice place. The main point of both times was to visit with friends and to meet people. Carrigan's is a good and hip place to talk. I was able to converse with friends the first time. The second time, I was upstairs and really got good opportunities to meet people--a really good place for a private party. I do recommend this place for its atmosphere. read more

Let me start by saying I do not give many places 5 stars so this is kind of a big deal. I LOVE THIS PLACE. I found this thanks to yelp and decided to try it. Atmosphere: Extremely nice. They have many different types of places to sit and and it feels very laid back and trendy. Staff: Everyone here was awesome. Waiters that were not even waiting on me asked how everything was. My water glass did not ever get more than half empty and I drink a TON of water. Drinks: Wow they know their stuff here. Extensive beer selection and a stocked bar. What could be better? Food: The oxtail chili was pretty good. Almost had a marinara taste to it with a great spicy bite at the end. It was chunky yet not thick. The pastrami mac n cheese was very good! It came with a baby spinach salad and I really enjoyed it. Price: I thought it was very reasonable for the quality of food and drink Final Thoughts: If I lived in this area I would come back here. I would love to take a date here as well. However I do not live here so I will not be back for a while :( read more
