Great experience with Cars for Less! I would definitely recommend if you're trying to save some money. We rented a Jeep with a tent and camped during our stay. While the cars are used the jeep worked perfectly and the a/c worked which is exactly what you need. I also loved all the amenities that were provided in the car for us - towels, blanket, pillows, cooking gear, cooler, & toilet paper. Rudy was very communicative and provided us with info on where and how we could camp and provided and instructional video on how to set up the tent. Returning was very easy and they even dropped us off at the airport afterwards! We will be back to do this again. read more

I don't like being cheated, but I think Rudy, of Cars For Less Maui, took me for an easy target last week. Our car was in the shop for repairs and we needed a rental for a few days. Over the phone, he quoted me a price of $29 / day and $197 / week. The weekly rate seemed the same as the daily rate, but we went there anyway. Should have seen a red flag. Since I didn't know how long my car would be in the shop, I started with the full week, with the understanding that we might bring the rental back early when our car was fixed. Ok. He charged over $233 to my credit card. $36 over his "weekly" rate. I thought it might be for taxes and such, but I couldn't reconcile it with the rental agreement, since it wasn't filled out. I figured we would sort it out when the car was returned. That was on Monday, after 4 pm. Oh, and the car had less than a quarter tank of gas. Rudy told me to return it a fourth full. How do you fill up a car to a quarter tank?? I thought it best not to argue with Rudy, since he did not seem like a pleasant person. Our car was repaired and I returned the rental after using it for 3 days. It was Thursday, before 4 pm. Cars For Less Maui was closed and locked up. Finally, a mechanic arrived and opened the door. He said Rudy was at the airport and I needed to wait. Rudy finally showed up and started working his calculator, to figure my refund. He told me that he was waiving the $60 cancellation fee, like he was doing me a favor. It seemed odd, since there was no mention of a cancellation fee when I rented the car and nothing on the rental agreement about it. Great, he did me a favor by not charging me something that he had no right to charge me. But, the total still seemed high. He said he was charging me for 4 days. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Hold on there, Rudy. I picked up the car on Monday. If I returned it on Tuesday, it would be a one day rental. If I returned it on Wednesday, it would be a two day rental. Since I returned it on Thursday, it was a three day rental. So, three days times $29 should be $87. Rudy said that was wrong because I picked the car up Monday morning. No, it was after 4 pm. Rudy said he would charge me for 3 days, but with the $60 cancellation fee. He gave me that choice, or I could pay for 4 days. I paid for 4 days, because he was acting like a tough guy. By the way, I also returned the car with a half tank of gas. Gas is expensive on Maui. Did that do me any good. Nope. One other thing. I never received an itemized receipt or completed rental contract. It doesn't seem like Rudy charges taxes or county fees for renting cars. Not my problem, though. I'll let Maui county work that out with him. I wish I had checked the reviews before doing business with Rudy, but I hope you don't make my mistake. read more

I rented here from Rudy on my trip to Maui. The office is located 3 minute drive from OGG baggage area. I was picked up as soon as I got my bags. Rudy kept in touch with me by text. Car was cheap (for Maui). Its a no frills operation out of a temp trailer office. Cars are in decent shape and there were no hidden fees, taxes, and no pressure to buy extras or insurance. Staff was friendly. If anyone is planning on going to tourist spots or taking the road to Hana DO NOT rent a large car and certainly not an SUV. When I traded cars I left my make-up and prescriptions in the glove box and they threw all my stuff away (even though I was still renting from them). No apologies, no compensation. Negative stars!!! This place has a lot of used cars for sale, so after stopping in the other day, as a serious shopper, we landed on one of the vehicles. After checking out the car fax report on the dashboard, there were several discrepancies, including the mileage. The car fax showed the mileage at 80,000 miles, but the mileage on the odometer was only 50,000. Upon asking about this, the owner, some Russian tough guy wannabe, began hemming and hawing, saying it must be a typo. Sounds like this guy rolls back his odometers to jack up the cost. While on a test drive, asked the owner what the lowest he would go for this car, which was about 6 grand. He told me to make an offer. I offered 4 grand, at which time this dick tells me, "turn around, you're wasting my fucking time!" Wow! Talk about customer service! This sorry excuse for a man didn't even TRY to negotiate! All I could hear was him muttering profanities. I wanted to stop the car and show him some aloha, but I took the higher road. Long story short, don't patronize this dickhead. Apparently his shitty reputation is well known around the automotive industry on Maui. He doesn't deserve to have a successful business here. More deserving and respectful people out there. Don't waste your time. This place is a joke and I don't know how they are still in business. Just went to see a car today, and I couldn't wait to get home to write this review. The person there was rude and it felt as if he did not want to deal with us. I could barely understand what he was saying but his body language was just horrible. The car we saw was surging and idling very high. I told him that I thought it wasn't running very well and he said "nope it's running good". I could hear the AC compressor cycling every three seconds and I asked, does the AC work? He says "yes no problem AC works really well". I bet not. BEWARE!! Not recommended for car rental if one's in Maui for vacation. A 20 mins' wait at the airport after text msg was not big deal but the moment I saw the car, I was greatly disappointed. It's a pretty old car. Year 2001 we later found out. Because we had a car seat to install, to save the guy's time, my husband and I went ahead to their office first to finish the documents and left my parents and my daughter at the airport. He gave us a paper to mark down all the scratches, dents, worn parts and wrote down the condition from inside and out. This was an old car and there were scratches, dents and worn parts everywhere. And it's not clean. Very obvious paint stains on the seat cover. The wrapping of the steering wheel was completely worn out. We flew 6 hours for vacation! We never expected a car check like that for car rental. It's quite stressful as well as we had no idea how strict they would be when we returned the car. However, we were pretty exhaustedly that time so we just finished the paper hastily. When we drove back to the airport, we found the oil level was very low. yeah, they didn't give us any option. When we just picked up our parents and daughter and looked for a gas station, we suddenly noticed that the maintenance light was on. We specifically rented a SUV from a local company instead of a mini van at a cheaper price from big names as we planned to drive Road to Hana. However, this car made us feel more dangerous. I called Rudy and describe the condition to him. He said just ignored the maintenance light and asked us to call him back the next day as he was not in office and could not check the inventory. I called the next day and he said he could give us a mini van but required $70-$100 more per day. I could feel that to Rudy, a car that's still running was a good car. Yeah, I agreed with him as long as if it's my own car. How come you trust an unfamiliar car in such a poor cosmetic condition with maintenance light on? We only stayed in Maui for 4 days and we didn't wanna waste our time in switching the car so we kept the car and of course, we canceled our trip to Road to Hana. The return car process was okay and the guy who worked for Rudy was nice but not helpful. He asked us to complete some of the blanks and signature we didn't provide when taking the car however he couldn't answer any questions regarding what the terms mean (their paper is different from those big names and there were several terms that we could not get even from the internet) After 10 min's reading, searching and guessing, we signed the paper with uncertainty. While the owner is a nice guy and the cost is about $100-$300 cheaper than a more reputable car rental place, I don't recommend renting from cars for less. Our car was unsafe as the tire sensor never went off. There was zero tred on the tires which felt very unsafe. The car shook so bad all week at every stop sign and waiting in traffic, it was beyond frustrating. The power steering did not work and we didn't do a few things based on knowing the car would not be able to turn in or turn around. The antenna was broken so we couldn't listen to the radio. We had to wash and vacuum the car before returning it or risk a $190 cleaning fee. Our reservation was for a convertible VW bug or convertible BMW. We ended up with a 2012 mutishubishi convertible, just not even close to the same. When I told the owner of our experience, he was only defensive so I just let it go as the trip was over. Why didn't we return the car sooner? We were on vacation. The place was an hour away. I didn't know what else we would end up with. He did not apologize or offer any kind of refund. Prefer person to person private car sales. My mother in law just moved in with us here on Maui and was in need of her own car. Found a nice 2006 VW New Beetle on CL. Turned out to be for sale by Cars For Less Maui. I wasn't really thrilled to be going to a used car lot with her, but she loved that car. I already went in with my guard up and wary of the situation. Read the rest of this review to see how that changed during our visit. Rudy is a good guy, honest, and hard working. My Rules for buying a used car: 1. Caveat Emptor. Buyer Beware. ca·ve·at emp·tor kavēät em(p)tôr/noun the principle that the buyer alone is responsible for checking the quality and suitability of goods before a purchase is made. 2. Know that when buying a used car, you ARE buying someone else's problem. Don't forget, the last owner sold it for a reason. 3. Recognize 1. and 2. above because you choose not to or are not in a financial position to buy new or to lease. 4. Do not expect NEW CAR quality, smell, and reliability for the price of a used car. 5. When buying a used car, the buyer should know a lot about cars, or bring your own mechanic to check it out prior to negotiations and purchase. 6. Understand you are taking a risk. Just plain owning a used car is a roll of the dice. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. No one can guarantee reliability and predict the next 6 months to 1 year of performance of a used car, whether you've owned it since new and it's got 150,000 miles on it now, or you just bought it with 65,000 miles on it from a used car dealership. If you go into buying a used car with 1-6 above in your head, you "should" be fine. We did. I wanted to address all of this because of some of the other nasty reviews on this Yelp page for Cars For Less Maui. Again, I'm originally from Detroit. I've met many liars and thieves. Come to mention it, I've met a few on Maui in my 10 years here. I'm a good judge of character. I want you to know, Rudy is neither a liar, nor a thief. He is an honest small business owner, doing his best to provide hassle free cars, at a reasonable price. He was charming, and disarming when we met him. Another 5 star review on here mentions he was "like my friend, trying to help me find the right car" or something like that. I agree with this description. He was not pushy, he was not shady, he was not hiding anything. He disclosed EVERYTHING he knew was wrong about the car. He only has so much time to inspect these used cars. It's not like he's a mind reader, or has been driving these cars for a year. He can't know everything that IS wrong with a car, or WILL BE wrong with a car. Together, through our on site inspection process, we made a "punch list" of items that he agreed to have fixed at no extra cost to us. We bought with "NO WARRANTY, AS IS" for the price the car was advertised in the Craigslist ad. Yes, the windshield advertised price on the car was higher than we had seen in the Craigslist ad the day before. Yes, this was confusing to us when we showed up. After asking pointed questions about why the price was higher in person than in the ad, he very plainly explained that the price ON THE CAR is with the warranty, and the price on the Craigslist ad(which we printed and brought along) was the price without the warranty. I think this could be cleared up with better wording in Craigslist ads, but I don't think it was done in any attempt to rip anyone off. Within the first few days of driving we ran across some minor items and a small oil leak. We promptly called Rudy, and he is taking car of those items for us even though we bought it with no warranty, as is. All in all, buying a used car is like playing blackjack. You are taking a risk, but you can limit your risk by knowing and playing by some basic rules. After this experience, Cars For Less Maui will get our referral business for anyone looking to buy a used car. I never imagined buying from a dealership could be so simple and easy . Rudy is the most genuinely kind and honest person, I never felt like he was SELLING me a car . The whole process felt more like Rudy was a friend just helping me find the right car to buy. I was so worried about having enough money for the down payment, but Rudy took care of that too . He asked how much money I could bring the first day, when could I have more and how much more money it would be . I had never heard of a dealership allowing the down payment paid in chunks, instead of requiring one huge lump sum. When I came to buy the car, Rudy was able to get me an interest rate even lower than I had agreed to. And a monthly payment that was less too . He had Bobby (The best mechanic ever) change the oil, and rotate the tires (that were brand new and put on by them the month before). My husband and I reserved a conversion van from Rudy sometime in January. The day we arrive to his lot Rudy gives us the bad news that the van we reserved is overheating and cannot be rented out to us (In Rudy's defence he had just received the van back that morning from another customer so he couldn't have done anything about it sooner). I was pretty crushed since this van was our accommodation and its a busy time of the year. However Rudy handled the situation the best he could. I read Rudy's reviews before I went in, as he had the car that I wanted. It seems as though he has switched up some of his business practices since some of those older reviews. My experience was much different. Rudy was kind and when asked specific questions, he answered them thoroughly. I bought a 2013 Nissan Leaf. He referenced me to the Nissan dealer and I was able to cross check what Rudy was telling me with the dealership. Everything checked out. I would recommend sending family and friends to Rudy as his prices are fair and negotiable, and the vehicles I saw on his lot look like they are in good condition with low miles. Buying a used car is risky for all and you just have to hope that the previous owner took care of it. Rudy seems to be trying to get further away from risky older, high-mileage vehicles so he doesn't have to assume the risk of selling them. My suggestion is to be an informed buyer. Research the vehicle you are interested in before you show up, look at consumer reports and read reviews on that specific vehicle. Ask Rudy for all the information he has on it, including service receipts and VIN checks. Get the car checked out by another mechanic if need be, he is in a central location. The discrepancy may lie within customers relying on Rudy to much to tell them everything and fix everything before the sale. If you ask the questions, he answers them. If you need to take time making your decision, he respects that. If you ask him for things that you would like to see done to the car to match the price he has on it, he is willing to discuss it. I was fair and informed and he matched that. I gave 5 stars because I think Rudy deserves a better rating than what is currently showing. Ultimately, I am happy with purchase that I made about three weeks ago. read more

We have been renting used car from Cars for less. Searched this option online prior to our arrival. Our small SUV was parked and ready at airport and we drove and explored Maui the whole time with no problem even though this was used car ( Mazda CX5) This really worked well for us and I highly recommend this option for everyone if you don't have to absolutely drive newer rental car. We tried a car out and really liked it, however it was a bit over priced for a 15 year old car. We tried asking a smaller price. I didn't read the Yelp reviews until after my experience. I was shocked to read other Yelpers reviews! I had the completely opposite experience with Rudy, the owner. I saw some cars on their website and wanted to see them in person. They do rent cars out as well as sell them so the inventory is limited, but it seems they get used cars shipped in often. After discussing my budget with Rudy, he offered a few suggestions. He even added that he had a few cars arriving the next day. When I came into look at the arrivals, the mechanic came out and helped me with a car I was interested in. He unlocked the car, called Rudy, and was attentive until another customer came. When Rudy came to the lot, he told me I could test drive the car. I told him that I was waiting for my dad and when my dad arrived, he let us drive the car around. After test driving, I decided that it was the car for me. I asked Rudy what the lowest price he could do, I countered with another price. He took my offer, which he said would include the tax. He also said the mechanic will be changing the oil tomorrow. He does seem like a no nonsense type, but I appreciate that compared to other car salesman I've encountered. Best car rental on Maui, period. If it weren't for Rudy I would still be waiting in line at Advantage rental car. I had booked a rental at Advantage a month before arriving on Maui. But when we arrived, the line was over an hour long and barely moving. I quickly scanned the nearby rental places and called Cars/Rent for less. I got Rudy's cell and he immediately drove to the airport, picked us up, and got us on the road in less than 30 minutes. RUDY IS THE BEST. Drop-off was easy and he gave us a ride back to the airport as well. The prices were similar or less than Advantage. I still feel a huge amount of relief from my dealings with Kasey and Ian at Karmart Maui. Never in my life have I had such an enjoyable car buying experience. I will actually miss seeing and interacting with them both. For me, genuine care and respect is a must and that is what they offered me every step of the way. No pressure, no harassment, no my way or the highway we just care about ourselves attitude at all, the deal they gave me left me feeling completely at peace, relieved, and blessed, and that's how purchases should be. For the people of Maui ! I don't wish any hardship on anyone. I work hard. I waited over 6 months to purchase a vehicle because it needed to be the RIGHT car for the RIGHT price. I have no room for financial hardship or time for a rip off. I have a lot on my plate, like most people, and a RELIABLE vehicle is important. Here's my story about CARS FOR LESS MAUI LLC: Saw a Craigslist ad for a great "reliable" 04 Nissan Xterra with "standard FREE 3 month or 3000 mile warranty and checked by certified AAA mechanic". I brought my own mechanic - just in case. I felt blessed to meet Rudy the owner. I asked for a discount on the car because the tags expire in 2 months. Seemed only fair. He agreed. Painless, fast, and what seemed like a true dealer to stick by his word. I thought I found a honest dealership. And the sales process- a breeze. 10 days later... On a Thursday afternoon- it broke down. Stalled. Towed the truck and called Rudy. I told Rudy that I understood that I bought the car "used As is" but really thought he needed to know that the car broke down after a little over one week. One would think: that this seems kinda shady, you know? Rudy arranged to send his mechanic, Bobby, over to look at the car. Bobby diagnosed the timing belt as "pau". Im thinking "Dang, that sucks! Bobby informed me that Rudy would call me the next day. (*side note- Bobby is friendly. He lives on the property. He gave my neighbor some advice on her car when she asked him to look at her engine... "Light it on fire and file an insurance claim") Rudy called the next day. I didn't get to answer as I was at work. No voicemail from him either. Saturday I called and was forwarded to Bobby. Bobby said they were ordering parts and to talk with Rudy on Monday. 4 1/2 days later, it's Monday!!! I called Rudy and he said "he felt bad- this has never happened before and wanted to make it right" (Look at all the reviews - it has happened before). Rudy gave me a total of 3 quotes to fix the timing belt in a span of a few hours, each quote getting higher and higher- up to $1200 insisting that he wanted to help me out and he would cover half the cost of the repair and I would have to also cover the towing to his lot and he would charge me $20 a day to rent a car from him. Literally bringing me to tears at this point. After some phone calls I learned that Ohana Vehicle services in Kihei (so nice on the phone) kindly quoted ONLY $650 to fix and another private mechanic only $800. Let me ask you, Rudy....Is helping me out and making this right projected by doubling the standard mechanic cost, having me pay for towing and for your rental car services? Does that sound like your trying to make things right? Does that sound honest? Are you really helping me out? My trust in him is starting to wear thin. Obviously Rudy was informed and told the reasonable amount to charge for the repair and when asked if he was still going to stick by his word and pay for half - he refused, got argumentative and started lying about the whole sale process and the agreements to get out of a current verbal agreement to fix the vehicle. Apparently his "standard 3 month warranty" that he advertises with ALL his Craigslist ads don't apply when he discounts the vehicle for sale. Who knew- I obviously didn't, but what is obvious is that he is trying to make more money off a unforeseen circumstance and to offer "help" at a high cost. I didn't have Rudy and Bobby fix my car. I didn't trust them anymore. I had a reliable mechanic fix for still less than what half the cost quoted. Long story short- He did not pay for half of the mechanic bill!!!!!! Lying should not be tolerated - we don't tolerate it with our children and should not with adults especially when it comes to customer service. "CARS FOR LESS MAUI LLC" has already had a case filed with the DCCA for a RICO complaint in 2014. Their yelp reviews are not so good either. Check it out! And please share my story. Help me by helping others! Im sad to say that I will be adding to the bad reviews and urging all to clearly read his advertising when purchased. Look over the agreement and make him put the warranty in the ad on the agreement. All of this would benefit if something does happen with the car and you need proof of the agreement. He won't try to make it right and his word means nothing in the end. He is greedy and will argue to get out of any verbal agreement. He has no interest in Quality customer care. I hope people who purchase don't ever have to deal with the hardships I have encountered. ALERT they advertise one thing they say something else. I have grown up around dealerships ,family 4 generation mechanics and give everyone a far shake but when they don't stand by there word especially to a hard working local mother I have to say something. Please please if you can buy from someone else do it. And if you have had a problem with this company speak up and call ,write a review. Maybe another person won't be victim . This person could be you !!!!! There are many wonderful people who sell cars out there but this company isn't one of them. Here a example they sold a car said it was really dependable car and the car within days broke down. When told they say they will make it right ( we're so sorry) but there idea of making it right is charging you full mechanics fees plus, make money off rental car and make guest estimates what it will cost. So now you paid for the car,no car , tow bills ,mechanic bills, rental car bills and stress how your going to pay for it all. This really is heartless to be that greedy. read more

I had a difficult experience here looking for a car. I had requested information about several cars ahead of time and that information turned out to be inaccurate. When I asked for a car's history, Rudy said all the information was on his website; it was not. He refused to bargain at all, but the next day I saw one of the cars I liked listed on Craigslist for $1000 less than the day before. He spent most of our test drive talking to someone else on the phone. Perhaps he was having a bad day, but he did not seem customer-centric at all. It's too bad, because he had several cars I was very interested in and probably would have left with one of them, had he tried to work with me. We came to Maui thinking we could travel via bus and hitchhiking but quickly found out that the buses wont let anyone on with a backpacking pack. So after trying to hitch around for a day (with no success) we gave in and started looking for a car to rent. Being we didn't plan our budget for a rental car we had to find somewhere that was close to us and had good prices. After a couple hours of researching and calling around we found Cars for Less Maui. Not only the price was perfect but they also picked up and dropped us off at the airport free of charge. The only reason I didn't give them five stars was because something happened with their internet/phone service and it delayed my rental deposit return and made it difficult to contact them. read more

I needed an affordable car to rent for my 9 days in Maui, and decided to try Rent For Less. I had a positive experience and would rent from them again! Please be mindful that it is a smaller operation and the whole process isn't like your regular car rental. In all honesty, the process was a bit sketchy, but glad it worked out (It felt like I was taking a risk). When I called I was speaking to a lovely woman on the phone (Daniella) who made me feel much more comfortable about the whole thing. Normally I would rent from a well-known car rental company like Avis, or Budget etc... but they were all so expensive. I had paid for the rental online before my arrival and she had the car parked at the airport waiting for my arrival. She texted me where it was located and had the key in a lock box on the door with the paperwork inside, simple as that. I had a bit of trouble finding the car in the lot since it was dark, but she texted me the entire time and told me she would "stay with me until I found it and knew I was okay". I thought that was wonderful service, rather than just leaving me to fend for myself. When I returned the car, it was again at night, and it was an unmarked parking lot area and I had a hard time knowing where to go even though I had the address. It wasn't until a man came out to the road where I was and told me where to park. Thank goodness my boyfriend was with me otherwise I would have felt very uncomfortable. The gravel parking lot wasn't lit and quite dark, and all I could see was someone standing around a barrel in the back which was on fire (guessing they must have been BBQ'ing something??). Again, not your typical car rental location, but it was a very easy return. The man drove us to the airport and dropped us off and that was it! As sketchy as the whole thing was, it was affordable and the car was in good condition (great air conditioning!!!) and the process was very easy. Also it may have only been sketchy because I was picking up the car at night, and returning it at night....maybe the daytime would have been better. read more
